For most self-contained smart-home panels, choose the M5Stack CoreS3. It combines an ESP32-S3 controller, capacitive touchscreen, sensors, audio, storage, real-time clock, battery support and a DIN/wall-mount base in one enclosure-ready unit. Choose an Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi with its GIGA Display Shield when you need a substantially larger screen, camera or extensive wired I/O. Choose the Seeed XIAO 1.47-inch IPS Display with ESP32-S3 when the priority is a very small Wi-Fi touch node or sensor dashboard.

All three can serve as alternatives to a generic ESP32 touchscreen development board, but they solve different physical and software problems. The right choice depends less on processor speed alone than on mounting, power input, display readability, expansion, and whether your Home Assistant firmware stack supports the exact display and touch hardware.

What makes a good alternative to an ESP32 touchscreen board?

A touchscreen controller for a smart home is both a user interface and an embedded network appliance. A board that looks attractive on a workbench can be awkward on a wall if it needs a separate voltage regulator, loose display cable, custom enclosure and external audio hardware. Conversely, a board with abundant I/O may be unnecessary for a two-button scene controller.

M5Stack CoreS3: the best all-in-one smart-home panel

Hardware and built-in features

The CoreS3 uses an ESP32-S3 with a dual-core Xtensa LX7 processor running at 240 MHz, 16 MB of flash and 8 MB of PSRAM. Its integrated display is a 2.0-inch, 320×240 capacitive-touch IPS LCD. That resolution is sufficient for scene buttons, thermostat controls, status cards and compact dashboards, although it is not a substitute for a tablet-sized interface.

The board includes a 0.3-megapixel camera, proximity sensor, six-axis IMU, magnetometer, real-time clock, microSD slot, dual microphones and a 1 W speaker. Built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi handles network communication, while the audio hardware can support audible confirmations, intercom-style experiments or voice-related prototypes without adding separate modules.

Mounting and power

The included DinBase is the CoreS3’s strongest practical advantage for a permanent installation. It supports DIN-rail, wall or screw mounting and accepts 9–24 V external DC. The base also accommodates the internal 500 mAh battery. This lets you design around a low-voltage supply already present in a cabinet or install a compact wall panel without first designing a carrier board.

Confirm the available current, connector orientation and enclosure clearance in your installation. The 9–24 V input describes the accepted voltage range, not a guarantee that every third-party power supply or terminal arrangement is safe. Use an appropriately regulated supply and follow the board’s wiring documentation.

Home Assistant fit

M5Stack provides a Home Assistant tutorial for CoreS3, which reduces the amount of board-specific discovery compared with starting from an unsupported display module. The tutorial does not eliminate the need to verify the current ESPHome component and display/touch configuration, but it gives this board the clearest documented route among the three choices.

Where CoreS3 is the right choice

  • A wall or DIN-mounted scene, alarm or climate controller that should look like one appliance.
  • A local interface that needs a speaker, microphones, proximity sensing or an RTC.
  • A prototype where microSD, camera and motion sensing should be available without a custom expansion board.
  • An installation powered from a 9–24 V low-voltage rail rather than only USB.

Important limitations

  • The 2-inch 320×240 screen limits the amount of information you can show at once. Use large controls and short labels rather than a dense tablet-style dashboard.
  • CoreS3 remains an ESP32-class microcontroller. It cannot replace a Linux computer for a full browser dashboard, video wall, database or multitasking desktop environment.
  • Actual battery life depends on display brightness, Wi-Fi duty cycle, audio use and sleep behavior; no universal battery-life figure is established for this hardware.

Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi plus GIGA Display Shield: best for a large interface and extensive I/O

Controller board capabilities

The GIGA R1 WiFi is built around an STM32H747 dual-core microcontroller: a Cortex-M7 at 480 MHz and a Cortex-M4 at 240 MHz. It provides 76 digital I/O pins, 12 analog inputs, four UARTs, three I2C buses and two SPI buses. A Murata 1DX radio supplies Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The board also exposes USB-A host, USB-C, a camera connector and a 6–24 V input.

What the GIGA Display Shield adds

The compatible shield adds a 3.97-inch 480×800 RGB touchscreen, digital microphone, six-axis IMU and an Arducam connector. Its screen is both larger and substantially higher in pixel count than the CoreS3 display, making it more suitable for room-by-room status, floor-plan views, charts or controls that need readable labels from a short distance.

The shield is a separate purchase and creates a larger board-and-shield assembly. Plan the stack height, mounting holes, cable exits and enclosure before committing to a wall installation.

Power and electrical planning

The GIGA accepts 6–24 V input, but its I/O is 3.3 V. Any 5 V sensor, relay board or industrial signal must be checked for voltage compatibility, logic thresholds and current requirements. Use level shifting or a properly rated interface where necessary; do not assume that a pin can safely drive an external load simply because the connector fits.

Where GIGA is the right choice

  • A richer wall interface where a 3.97-inch portrait or landscape screen is worth the extra physical size.
  • A multi-sensor controller with many simultaneous GPIO, analog, I2C, SPI or UART connections.
  • A project involving a camera, digital microphone, USB host accessories or more advanced local processing.
  • A prototype that may evolve into a custom control panel rather than a small embedded appliance.

Trade-offs compared with ESP32-based boards

The GIGA’s STM32H747 is not an ESP32, so ESP32-specific Arduino examples, pin mappings and ESPHome components cannot be assumed to work unchanged. Select firmware libraries that explicitly support the GIGA and its display shield. If your primary requirement is a quick ESPHome dashboard, the board’s raw I/O advantage may not compensate for additional display-driver and integration work.

Power observations

Seeed reports factory-dashboard measurements for the display models under its stated test setup: 130.53 mA at 3.7 V for the 1.47-inch ESP32-S3 model, 160.05 mA for the 1.14-inch model and 159.76 mA for the 0.96-inch model. These are 60-second averages, not universal battery-life figures. Wi-Fi traffic, brightness, touch activity, peripherals and sleep settings can change consumption substantially.

Where XIAO is the right choice

  • A compact room controller that must fit inside a small custom enclosure.
  • A low-information sensor dashboard showing a few values or alarm states.
  • An embedded interface in an appliance, instrument or badge-sized project.
  • A design where ESP32-S3 Wi-Fi, BLE 5.0, PSRAM and flash are more important than abundant GPIO.

Limitations to plan around

The tiny display is not suitable for a dense dashboard or controls that must be readable across a room. GPIO and physical expansion are limited compared with the GIGA, and enclosure design is typically your responsibility. Verify the board’s exact pinout and the library support for its LCD and touch controller before laying out a carrier board.

Home Assistant and ESPHome: choosing a firmware path

How the native ESPHome connection works

Home Assistant’s ESPHome integration maintains a persistent connection to each ESPHome device through the native API. That connection allows sensor updates and button presses to arrive immediately and lets Home Assistant invoke device actions. ESPHome devices can also provide Bluetooth, infrared, radio-frequency and serial proxy capabilities when the hardware and component configuration support them.

A board’s Wi-Fi radio alone does not guarantee ESPHome compatibility. You need a supported board definition or a workable generic configuration, a display component for the LCD controller, a touch component for the touch controller, and correct GPIO assignments. A shield or module can be electrically functional yet still require custom firmware work.

CoreS3 path

Start with the board-specific Home Assistant tutorial supplied for CoreS3, then confirm the current ESPHome versions and component names. Map the touch gestures to Home Assistant entities such as lights, scenes, covers or climate controls. Keep the first configuration simple: one screen, a few buttons and a status sensor. Add camera, audio, SD-card or motion features only after the network connection and display are stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GIGA path

Treat the GIGA as an Arduino/STM32 development project unless the exact display shield and firmware stack you intend to use document ESPHome support. Select libraries that name the GIGA Display Shield and its touchscreen controller, then expose Home Assistant entities through a compatible integration or custom API. The board’s many buses are useful only after you have confirmed voltage levels, pin multiplexing and library support.

XIAO path

Use Seeed’s ESP32-S3 examples as a starting point for the display and touch hardware, then adapt the configuration to your Home Assistant transport. Check whether the selected ESPHome release supports the LCD and touch components directly. If not, a custom Arduino or PlatformIO firmware layer may be needed before Home Assistant can receive events.

Mounting, enclosure and power decisions

DIN or wall installation

CoreS3 is the only option here supplied with a stated DIN/wall/screw mounting base. That makes it the shortest route from a development board to a fixed control point. The GIGA assembly and XIAO module can still be mounted, but you should expect to design or source a carrier, faceplate or enclosure.

USB versus low-voltage DC

USB is convenient for a bench prototype and for firmware flashing. For a permanent installation, compare the board’s accepted input range with the power already available at the location: CoreS3’s DinBase accepts 9–24 V, while the GIGA lists 6–24 V input. XIAO projects commonly require a suitable USB or battery/power arrangement, so budget a regulator and protection circuit when integrating with building wiring or a larger DC bus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery operation

The CoreS3 includes a 500 mAh battery in its base arrangement, and the XIAO display family provides a LiPo connector. Neither fact predicts runtime by itself. Measure your chosen brightness, Wi-Fi interval, sensor load and sleep mode on a finished prototype. The GIGA is generally better treated as a powered panel than as a small battery node because its larger board-and-shield assembly and richer peripherals increase system complexity.

How to choose step by step

  1. Define the viewing distance. If users read the panel from across a room, start with the GIGA Display Shield’s 3.97-inch screen. If it is a hand-near appliance control, CoreS3 or XIAO may be sufficient.
  2. Count controls and data fields. A few scene buttons and temperatures fit CoreS3 or XIAO. Multiple rooms, charts or long labels favor the larger GIGA display.
  3. List every peripheral. Mark camera, microphone, speaker, IMU, SD card, relay, meter, UART, I2C and SPI requirements. Choose the board that provides them natively instead of relying on unverified adapters.
  4. Choose the installation method. Select CoreS3 when DIN or screw mounting should be included. For GIGA or XIAO, draw the enclosure, connector and cable-clearance dimensions before buying.
  5. Confirm the power source. Match the stated 6–24 V or 9–24 V input ranges where applicable, and design regulation, fusing and level shifting for all external devices.
  6. Verify firmware before mechanical work. Test the exact display driver, touch controller, Wi-Fi connection and Home Assistant event path on a loose board.
  7. Prototype the user interface. Use large touch targets, a clear offline state and a physical fallback such as a button or automation when the network is unavailable.
  8. Test the finished enclosure. Check Wi-Fi signal, heat, touch accuracy, display reflections, reboot behavior and recovery after power loss.

Common failure modes and fixes

The display works but touch events do not

This usually indicates a missing or incorrect touch-controller component, wrong I2C/SPI pins, an interrupt pin mismatch or a firmware configuration for a different board revision. Recheck the manufacturer’s pinout and run a minimal touch test before adding Home Assistant actions.

Home Assistant sees Wi-Fi but no device

Confirm that the firmware actually exposes the native ESPHome API, that the device and Home Assistant are on reachable networks, and that the API credentials and encryption settings match. A successful Wi-Fi association does not prove that the display firmware is running an ESPHome API server.

Random resets when peripherals start

Display backlights, speakers, radios, cameras and motors can create current spikes or electrical noise. Use a supply with adequate headroom, short and appropriate wiring, decoupling recommended by the board documentation, and a separate driver or regulator for loads that exceed a GPIO’s rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unreadable or cramped interface

Reduce the number of simultaneous values, increase font size and use one screen per function. The XIAO’s 1.47-inch panel is best for a compact status view; the CoreS3’s 2-inch panel favors a few large controls; the GIGA’s 3.97-inch display gives you room for richer layouts.

External sensors report damaged or invalid readings

Check 3.3 V logic compatibility before connecting a 5 V module. On the GIGA in particular, its 3.3 V I/O requires deliberate level and current planning. Use a level shifter, transistor, isolated interface or correctly rated expansion board as appropriate.

Do you need a Linux computer instead?

Not for a local control surface made of buttons, sensor values and simple automations. A microcontroller board is faster to boot, simpler to power and well suited to an ESPHome native API connection. It can continue presenting a local interface even though Home Assistant performs the central automation work.

Choose a Linux computer when the interface requires a full web browser, multiple dashboards, video playback, camera streaming, intensive image processing, a database, or several desktop applications at once. The CoreS3, GIGA and XIAO are embedded controllers, not general-purpose desktop replacements. A practical architecture can use a Linux host for Home Assistant and one or more microcontroller panels for room-level interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final selection guide

  • Choose M5Stack CoreS3 when you want the most complete, mountable appliance with the least custom hardware. Its compromises are the small 2-inch display and microcontroller-level computing.
  • Choose Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi plus GIGA Display Shield when screen area, camera/audio work and a large number of wired peripherals matter more than compactness or a turnkey enclosure.
  • Choose Seeed XIAO 1.47-inch ESP32-S3 when the interface must be physically small and still provide Wi-Fi, BLE 5.0, touch and MicroSD. Accept that the screen and expansion space are limited.
  • Choose a XIAO nRF52840 display variant only when BLE and battery operation are the priority and the device does not need Wi-Fi networking to Home Assistant.

For a first smart-home touchscreen installation, CoreS3 is the safest default because its mounting, power and accessory integration remove the most mechanical work. Move to the GIGA when the interface itself needs to be larger or the controller must coordinate many external devices. Move to XIAO when every millimeter matters and the dashboard can remain deliberately simple.
