For a balanced TDM Neo starting point, use +3 dB at 60 Hz, +2 dB at 120 Hz, −2 dB at 250 Hz, −1 dB at 500 Hz, +2 dB at 1 kHz, +2 dB at 2 kHz, +1 dB at 4 kHz, 0 dB at 8 kHz and +1 dB at 16 kHz. If the TDM app offers a preamp, set it near −3 dB. This combination adds sub-bass weight, removes the low-mid cloud that masks speech, and gives vocals modest presence without making consonants painfully sharp.
These are practical starting settings, not a manufacturer-measured correction curve. Neo has a headphone mode and a twist-to-speaker mode, and the same EQ can sound different in each. Apply the profile in the official TDM companion app, listen at a moderate level, and change one band at a time in 1 dB steps.
The recommended TDM Neo EQ profile
Enter the following values in the TDM companion app’s custom EQ. Keep every band that is not listed at 0 dB. The profile is intentionally restrained: large boosts often create clipping, boom or harshness before they produce useful detail.
| Band | Gain | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 60 Hz | +3 dB | Sub-bass weight, kick-drum impact and a deeper sense of extension |
| 120 Hz | +2 dB | Bass body and warmth |
| 250 Hz | −2 dB | Low-mid muddiness that can cover words and bass definition |
| 500 Hz | −1 dB | Boxiness and congested-sounding instruments |
| 1 kHz | +2 dB | Vocal fundamentals and the center of speech intelligibility |
| 2 kHz | +2 dB | Consonant definition and vocal presence |
| 4 kHz | +1 dB | Additional presence; lower this if voices become sharp |
| 8 kHz | 0 dB | Leaves sibilance controlled while you evaluate the profile |
| 16 kHz | +1 dB | A small amount of air and openness |
With a preamp control, start at −3 dB. The positive gains add energy at several frequencies, so reducing the overall level preserves headroom for peaks. If Neo’s app has no preamp, lower the largest boosts by 1 dB whenever you hear crackling, roughness or obvious clipping.

What TDM Neo is and why the listening mode matters
TDM describes Neo as headphones that transform into a portable speaker with a single physical twist. In headphone mode, the drivers sit close to your ears and the ear-cup seal has a major effect on bass. In speaker mode, sound radiates into the room, reflections become part of what you hear, and bass can seem less concentrated. The twist mechanism means you should check the physical mode before judging an EQ change.
The official product page displays a price of $249 and advertises more than 200 hours of battery life. Those figures are the displayed and advertised values for the page accessed in 2026; they are not a promise that every region, retailer or operating condition will show the same price or runtime. They are useful context, but they do not determine the correct equalizer curve.
How to apply the EQ in the TDM app
- Charge and connect Neo. Turn on the headphones, enable Bluetooth on your phone or tablet, and connect to Neo before opening the companion app. A nearly empty battery or an incomplete pairing can prevent settings from being written to the device.
- Open the device controls. Select Neo in the app, then open the sound, EQ or listening-settings screen. TDM’s app supports custom EQ settings and sound presets; the exact menu wording can vary by app version.
- Choose Custom EQ. Do not start by stacking a preset with a custom curve unless the app explicitly shows that both are independent. A preset may already boost bass or treble, making the resulting sound and headroom difficult to predict.
- Enter each band. Set 60 Hz to +3 dB, 120 Hz to +2 dB, 250 Hz to −2 dB, 500 Hz to −1 dB, 1 kHz to +2 dB, 2 kHz to +2 dB, 4 kHz to +1 dB, 8 kHz to 0 dB and 16 kHz to +1 dB.
- Set the preamp if available. Use approximately −3 dB. If there is no preamp, begin playback and watch for clipping; reduce the 60 Hz, 120 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz boosts by 1 dB if necessary.
- Save or apply the profile. Give it a clear name such as Vocal-plus-bass starting point. The app also provides device controls and firmware management, so allow the save or synchronization process to finish before closing it.
- Confirm the physical mode. Twist Neo into the mode you intend to use and verify that the app still shows the intended device and settings. Keep separate notes for headphone and speaker listening if the app does not store mode-specific curves.
Why these frequencies improve both speech and bass
60 and 120 Hz: add weight without turning the whole low end up
The 60 Hz boost supplies the lowest part of kick drums, bass guitar fundamentals and electronic sub-bass. The smaller 120 Hz boost adds audible body, which prevents a modest sub-bass lift from sounding thin. Raising both bands only a few decibels gives more impact while limiting the one-note boom that can result from a large 100 Hz-wide shelf.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
General equalization guidance places bass emphasis roughly in the 60–200 Hz region. Neo’s exact response is not published, so these values should be treated as a controlled experiment rather than a claim that every unit needs the same correction.
250 and 500 Hz: make room for words
Too much energy around 250 Hz can make male voices, guitars and kick drums overlap. The −2 dB cut there removes some of that thickness without gutting the bass you just added below it. The −1 dB cut at 500 Hz is deliberately smaller; it targets a boxy or closed-in character while retaining enough midrange body for natural voices.
1 and 2 kHz: bring the vocal forward
Speech fundamentals and much of a singer’s recognizable tone sit in the broad 800 Hz–2 kHz area. A +2 dB lift at 1 kHz gives the voice a stable center, while +2 dB at 2 kHz improves the edges of consonants such as t, k and s. These boosts are modest because a large upper-mid rise can make a vocal seem louder but less comfortable.
4 kHz: add presence carefully
A small +1 dB at 4 kHz can help a podcast voice cut through music. This is also where excessive presence becomes tiring or nasal, especially at high playback levels. If a singer sounds shouty, reduce 4 kHz to 0 dB before changing the lower vocal bands.

8 and 16 kHz: control brightness, then add air
Leaving 8 kHz flat avoids adding hiss and sibilance while you evaluate the main changes. The +1 dB at 16 kHz is optional in practice: keep it if recordings sound open, or return it to 0 dB if cymbals and esses become piercing. A missing 16 kHz boost will not make speech unintelligible.
Fine-tune the profile by symptom
Use a familiar recording containing both spoken words and a steady bass line. Listen for at least 30 seconds after every change, then bypass the EQ briefly at the same volume. Loudness alone can make an altered setting seem better, so match levels as closely as possible.
Vocals are still recessed
- Add 1 dB at 1 kHz.
- Replay the same sentence or chorus.
- If the voice is still behind the instruments, add 1 dB at 2 kHz instead of continuing to raise every presence band.
Stop when words become easy to follow. More upper-mid gain is not automatically more clarity.
Vocals sound sharp, nasal or sibilant
- Reduce 4 kHz by 1 dB, returning it to 0 dB.
- If the problem is an aggressive s or t sound, reduce 8 kHz by 1–2 dB.
- If the whole voice is shouty, reduce 2 kHz by 1 dB.
Change the band that matches the symptom rather than cutting all treble. Upper-mid frequencies are useful for consonant clarity, but excessive boosts can sound harsh.
Recommended Free Tools
Bass is boomy or masks the singer
- Reduce 120 Hz by 1 dB.
- If the muddiness remains, reduce 250 Hz by another 1 dB, to −3 dB.
- Only then consider reducing 60 Hz. Cutting 60 Hz first can remove impact while leaving the audible boom higher up.
Check the ear-cup seal as well. Glasses, hair or a loose fit can change bass more than a 1 dB EQ move.
Bass is still too light
- Add 1 dB at 60 Hz, to +4 dB, and listen for deeper impact.
- If the recording needs body rather than sub-bass, add 1 dB at 120 Hz instead.
- Do not raise both bands repeatedly. If the sound becomes thick, undo the 120 Hz change and keep the 60 Hz lift.
When the app has no preamp, large cumulative boosts reduce headroom. Lower the overall playback level or trim the largest boosts if distortion appears.
Headroom, clipping and volume matching
Digital EQ boosts can push a peak above the available level even when the source file itself is clean. Clipping may sound like a hard crack on kick drums, a raspy vocal or distortion that appears only in loud sections. It is not fixed by adding more treble or bass.

- Use a negative preamp near −3 dB when the app provides one.
- If no preamp exists, reduce the 60 Hz, 120 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz boosts by 1 dB before lowering every band.
- Reduce the phone or computer output slightly if distortion occurs only at maximum volume.
- Compare with EQ bypassed at matched loudness; a louder setting often seems clearer even when it is not.
Avoid judging clipping from one poorly mastered track. Confirm it with two or three clean recordings, including spoken audio and music with consistent kick hits.
Headphone mode versus speaker mode
Neo’s physical twist changes how sound reaches you, so one curve is unlikely to be optimal everywhere. In headphone mode, start with the recommended values and check bass after the ear cups are seated. In speaker mode, move a few steps around the room before making a large EQ change; reflections and placement can create peaks that an equalizer cannot remove consistently.
For headphone listening
- Keep the 60 Hz boost if you want deeper impact and the seal is good.
- Use the −2 dB cut at 250 Hz to prevent close, sealed listening from becoming congested.
- Keep 4 kHz at +1 dB only if voices remain comfortable at your normal volume.
For speaker listening
- Test at the position where you normally listen, not with your ear next to the driver.
- If the sound is boomy against a wall or corner, reduce 120 Hz first.
- If speech loses focus at a distance, try +1 dB at 1 kHz before adding more 2–4 kHz energy.
The app’s manual describes Neo’s twist modes and points to app access for custom EQs, power settings and device controls. Always confirm which mode is active before deciding that a setting failed.

Podcasts, meetings and audiobooks
Start with the full profile, then set 60 Hz and 120 Hz to 0 dB if low-frequency rumble distracts you. Keep the 250 Hz cut and the 1–2 kHz boosts; they do most of the work for intelligibility. If voices become tiring after long sessions, return 4 kHz to 0 dB and leave 8 kHz flat.
Pop, rock and live recordings
Use the profile as written. If guitars and vocals compete, keep 250 Hz at −2 dB and try reducing 500 Hz another 1 dB rather than adding more 4 kHz. This preserves a natural vocal body while opening space around the instruments.
Electronic, hip-hop and bass-heavy music
Retain +3 dB at 60 Hz and +2 dB at 120 Hz first. Add no more than 1 dB to either band during the initial test. If the kick becomes soft or smeared, reduce 120 Hz instead of increasing 60 Hz again. The goal is distinct low-end impact, not maximum quantity.
Classical and acoustic recordings
Try 60 Hz at +1 dB and 120 Hz at 0 dB if the default profile sounds too warm. Keep the 250 Hz and 500 Hz cuts small; removing too much lower midrange can make cellos, piano and voices unnaturally lean. Return 16 kHz to 0 dB if room noise or bow texture becomes distracting.

Troubleshooting the most common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| The custom curve disappears | The profile was not saved or Neo was disconnected during synchronization | Reconnect, reopen Custom EQ, re-enter the values and wait for the save confirmation before closing the app |
| EQ sounds unchanged | A preset is active, the wrong device is selected, or the change was made in a different mode | Confirm Neo is selected, choose Custom EQ, toggle bypass once and verify the physical twist mode |
| Distortion after boosting bass | Insufficient digital headroom | Use a −3 dB preamp or reduce the largest boosts by 1 dB |
| Bass varies when you move | Speaker-mode room reflections or an inconsistent headphone seal | Test in the normal listening position and check the ear-cup fit before changing EQ |
| Speech is clearer but tiring | Too much 2–4 kHz or 8 kHz energy | Cut 4 kHz by 1 dB, then 8 kHz by 1 dB if sibilance remains |
| Bass is loud but indistinct | Too much 120–250 Hz energy | Reduce 120 Hz first, then deepen the 250 Hz cut by 1 dB |
What is and is not known about Neo’s frequency response
TDM’s reviewed official materials describe the product, app functions and controls but do not publish a numeric Neo frequency-response measurement or a manufacturer-approved EQ curve. That means no single set of gains can be presented as a laboratory correction for every unit. Fit, firmware, source volume, music mastering and the headphone-to-speaker twist mode all affect what you hear.
The profile in this guide uses commonly understood frequency regions: bass is broadly around 60–200 Hz, vocal intelligibility is strongest around 800 Hz–2 kHz, and the 2–4 kHz area contributes speech-consonant clarity. Those ranges explain the direction of each adjustment; they do not replace listening tests on your own Neo.

- Choose two reference tracks: one with a clearly recorded speaking voice and one with a bass line that has both kick and sustained notes.
- Set the recommended profile and the −3 dB preamp, if available.
- Listen at the volume you normally use, not at maximum volume.
- Change only one band by 1 dB.
- Replay the same passage and compare with the previous setting at matched loudness.
- Keep a note of every change and stop when the specific problem is solved.
- Save separate profiles for headphone and speaker use if Neo’s app permits it; otherwise record the two curves in a note so you can switch them manually.
Small changes are easier to evaluate than a dramatic smile-shaped curve. If you cannot identify what a band improved, undo that change.
Listening safety and practical limits
EQ cannot repair a damaged recording, remove all room resonance in speaker mode or compensate for a poor seal. It can also make a comfortable track too loud if boosts are used as a substitute for volume control. Keep sessions at a level that allows conversation, take breaks during long listening and lower the volume if your ears feel strained.
Because Neo advertises more than 200 hours of battery life, you may use it for long periods between charges, but the advertised figure is not a guarantee for every mode, volume level or firmware version. Check the app’s battery display before a long session and keep the device firmware current through the app when updates are offered.
Bottom line for TDM Neo owners
Start with +3 dB at 60 Hz, +2 dB at 120 Hz, cuts at 250 and 500 Hz, and modest +2 dB boosts at 1 and 2 kHz. Keep 4 kHz to +1 dB, 8 kHz flat and 16 kHz at +1 dB. Use a −3 dB preamp when possible, verify the headphone or speaker mode, and tune in 1 dB steps. This approach gives vocals more intelligibility and bass more weight without assuming a frequency-response measurement that TDM has not published.
