The quickest official fix for a slow Epic Games download is to remove the launcher’s built-in cap: open Settings → Download Settings, clear Limit Download Speeds, restart the launcher, and retry. Then open Download Manager to make the game your priority, stop competing installs or updates, and check the Epic Games Public Status page before changing your network. For consistently better transfer stability, Epic recommends wired Ethernet, cache and DNS troubleshooting, checking required-domain access, and disabling proxy servers.
Use this order when Epic downloads are slow
Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell what helped. Work through the following sequence, testing the download after each meaningful change:
- Check service health. Open the Epic Games Public Status page and look at the Epic Games Store components, especially login and download/installation. A live incident can limit speed regardless of your computer or router.
- Remove the launcher limit. In Epic Games Launcher, select the Settings icon, choose Settings, scroll to Download Settings, and clear Limit Download Speeds. Restart the launcher, then retry the download.
- Give the game first place in the queue. Open Download Manager from the lower-left corner, use Priority Downloads, and drag the title above other downloads. Pause or cancel competing installs and updates if the game needs the available bandwidth now.
- Improve the connection path. Use wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when practical, or try another internet connection to determine whether your local network is the bottleneck.
- Repair network conditions. Follow Epic’s troubleshooting sequence for clearing the device cache, allowing required Epic domains through security software, flushing DNS or trying a public DNS service, and disabling proxy servers.
Do not expect any setting to exceed your internet plan, your local network’s capacity, or the server capacity available to your region. These steps remove avoidable restrictions and isolate the part of the connection that is actually limiting the transfer.
Remove Epic’s built-in download cap
Legacy launcher interface
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select the Settings icon.
- Choose Settings in the menu.
- Scroll to Download Settings.
- Clear the checkbox labeled Limit Download Speeds.
- Close and restart the launcher.
- Retry the game download and watch the transfer rate in Download Manager.
Epic’s support guidance specifically recommends a restart after changing this control. If you leave the launcher running, an old limit can remain active until its download service is reinitialized.

Early Preview interface
In the Early Preview interface, Epic describes separate Download speed limit and Active download speed limit fields. Both should be empty before you restart the launcher. An empty field is different from entering a very large number: the former removes the configured cap, while the latter still leaves a limit in place.
When clearing the limit does not help
A removed cap cannot create bandwidth that is unavailable elsewhere. If the rate remains low, note whether it changes when you stop another household download, move from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, or test a different connection. Those observations identify a competing device, wireless interference, or an upstream service issue without relying on speculative registry edits or third-party “optimizer” utilities.
Control the queue in Download Manager
Epic’s Download Manager is more useful than a progress window. Open it from the lower-left corner of the launcher and use its controls to decide what receives bandwidth and when.
Make one title finish first
Select Priority Downloads for the game you need. If several items are queued, drag the target title above the others. A priority choice is most effective when you also pause optional installs, patches, or updates; otherwise the launcher still has multiple jobs competing for the same connection.
Prevent background work from taking bandwidth
Review pending updates before starting a large game install. Download Manager exposes controls for automatic-update scheduling, so you can move nonessential updates to a time when the connection is idle. It also lets you choose whether installs may run while you are playing. Blocking installation during gameplay avoids disk and network contention, while allowing it can be convenient when you want an unattended queue to continue.

Set limits deliberately
The manager includes speed-limit controls in addition to the global Download Settings option. If a per-download or active-download limit is present, it can hold the transfer below the rate your connection can deliver. Remove or adjust those limits when speed is the priority; restore a lower value later if downloads interfere with video calls, streaming, or other household traffic.
Choose the install directory before starting
Download Manager exposes the default install directory. Selecting a drive with sufficient free space avoids a download that appears slow because installation is waiting for storage or repeatedly failing. Keep the launcher and the game on a drive that is healthy and connected directly to the computer; a nearly full or intermittently disconnected drive can turn a network problem into an installation problem.
Check whether Epic is having an outage
Open the Epic Games Public Status page before changing your PC. Its component list includes Epic Games Store login, download/installation, purchasing and refunding, wallet, browsing, and related services. If download/installation is degraded or under incident response, local changes may not improve the rate until Epic restores service.
At the time represented by the current launcher guidance, the Epic Games Store download/installation component was listed as operational. Status is live and can change after you read this article, so treat the page’s current state—not an earlier screenshot—as the deciding evidence.
Choose Ethernet or Wi-Fi based on the bottleneck

Epic recommends wired Ethernet for slower-than-expected downloads. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a straightforward choice for a PC or console close enough to a router or switch. It can reduce wireless variability, but it cannot deliver more than the ISP plan, the rest of your home network, or Epic’s available server capacity supports.

If a wired test is no faster than Wi-Fi, look beyond the radio link: check the status page, stop other transfers, verify the launcher limit, and compare with another connection. If Ethernet is clearly faster, the useful fix is improving the wireless path or keeping the cable connected rather than changing unrelated launcher files.

Clear cache and repair DNS or proxy problems
Clear the device cache
Epic includes cache clearing in its support sequence for slow or abnormal launcher behavior. Use the cache-clearing procedure appropriate to your operating system or device, then relaunch Epic Games Launcher and test again. Cache removal is a repair step, not a permanent speed setting: it can eliminate stale local data that interferes with the launcher, but it does not raise the physical bandwidth of your connection.
Allow Epic domains through security controls
Security software, a firewall, or network filtering can block the domains the launcher needs for authentication and content delivery. Epic recommends whitelisting the required Epic domains. Apply the exception in the security product that is actually filtering traffic, and avoid broadly disabling protection for every website. If the launcher works on another connection but not your usual network, filtering is a stronger suspect.
Flush DNS or test a public DNS service
DNS translates a service name into the network address the launcher contacts. Epic lists flushing DNS and switching to a public DNS service as troubleshooting options. Treat both as experiments: they may correct stale or failing lookups, but Epic does not promise a particular provider or a percentage speed increase. Record the original DNS settings so you can restore them if the test has no effect.
Disable proxy servers during the test
A proxy can add a slow or unreliable intermediary to the download path. Epic recommends disabling proxy servers while troubleshooting. If your school, workplace, or managed network requires a proxy, ask its administrator before removing the setting; on a personal connection, compare a direct connection with the proxy disabled and keep the configuration that is both permitted and stable.

Diagnose the symptom instead of guessing
The speed is almost exactly the same low value every time
- Recheck Limit Download Speeds and any active-download limit in Download Manager.
- Restart the launcher after clearing the limit.
- Pause other Epic installs, updates, and large transfers on the network.
- Compare the result with a wired connection or another internet connection.
The rate repeatedly jumps between fast and slow
- Test Ethernet to remove Wi-Fi distance and interference from the equation.
- Check whether another device starts streaming or downloading at the same time.
- Watch the status page for an incident affecting download/installation.
- Clear the device cache and review proxy or security filtering if the swings occur only on one device.
The launcher starts, but a download will not begin
- Confirm that Epic Games Store login and download/installation are operational on the status page.
- Check that required Epic domains are allowed by the firewall, security suite, or network filter.
- Flush DNS or test a public DNS service, then restart the launcher.
- Disable a personal proxy temporarily and retry.
The download is fast but installation stalls
- Check free space on the selected default install directory.
- Use Download Manager to confirm the correct drive and queue order.
- Consider whether another game is installing or updating at the same time.
- Do not interpret a disk-bound installation pause as proof that the internet connection is slow.
Settings that affect startup time
Download controls do not directly determine how quickly the launcher opens. Startup depends on the launcher build, the device, storage, and the work required to initialize its interface and account services. Epic’s new Launcher Preview reports the following cold-start comparison:

Epic labels the result “1.8x faster.” It is a published comparison, not a guarantee for your computer: individual results vary, and the three lowest-end machines were excluded. A cold start also differs from resuming a launcher that is already running, so use your own stopwatch if startup time is the deciding factor.
What the Preview changes
Epic describes the Preview as rebuilt for speed, with faster opening, nearly instant tab switching, and recent games one click away. The Preview is not feature-identical to the established launcher. Epic says some legacy social and account-management features are not yet available, while purchases, installed games, cloud saves, and progress carry over.
Decide whether to install the Preview
- Choose it when faster startup and tab responsiveness matter more than access to every legacy social or account-management feature.
- Stay with the established launcher when you rely on a missing legacy feature or need the least change to your daily workflow.
- Before switching, verify the Preview’s current limitation list; Preview capabilities can change as development continues.
What not to change for a “faster” Epic download
Epic’s documented troubleshooting does not establish a universal benefit from editing Engine.ini, changing the Windows registry, installing a driver utility, using a VPN, or running a third-party PC optimizer. Such changes can introduce new variables, weaken security, or make support harder without addressing a service outage, a configured speed cap, wireless interference, or DNS failure. Start with the launcher controls and network checks Epic actually documents.

Likewise, a different DNS provider is not automatically faster. DNS affects name resolution; after the launcher has connected, the sustained transfer is governed by the network path and available content-delivery capacity. Keep a DNS change only if it resolves a reproducible lookup or connection problem.
A practical checklist before a large install
- Epic Games Public Status shows no active problem affecting login or download/installation.
- Limit Download Speeds is cleared, and the launcher has been restarted afterward.
- The game is first in Download Manager’s queue and competing installs or updates are paused.
- Automatic updates are scheduled away from the download window when bandwidth is limited.
- The default install directory has adequate free space and is on a reliable drive.
- Ethernet is connected when practical; otherwise the device is close enough to the access point for a stable Wi-Fi signal.
- Required Epic domains are allowed by the firewall or security product.
- Cache, DNS, and proxy checks have been performed only when the symptom points to a local network or launcher problem.
After each change, retry the same title and note the observed rate. A consistent improvement after one change is more useful than a collection of unverified tweaks applied simultaneously.
