Playnite is the best all-purpose alternative to the Epic Games Launcher if you want one Windows library for Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, Xbox, emulators, and locally installed games. It is free, open source, highly customizable, and stores library information on your PC. Choose GOG GALAXY for a more polished interface with artwork, tags, friends, achievements, and statistics. Choose the Xbox app for Windows if you mainly use Game Pass or Windows handhelds and want supported installed games surfaced in a native Microsoft hub.

Quick verdict

Option Best for What it does Main limitation
Playnite One library spanning stores, emulators, and local games Aggregates libraries, organizes metadata, and launches games through their original platforms Windows-focused and more hands-on to configure
GOG GALAXY A polished collection and social view Connects platforms, imports games and friends, and adds filters, tags, artwork, achievements, and statistics Connections are separate integrations whose completeness can vary
Xbox app for Windows Game Pass users and Windows gaming handhelds Shows supported installed storefront games in My Library and Most Recent Focused on supported Windows installations rather than emulators or deep customization

None of these applications combines ownership into a new store. They present titles from accounts and locations you already use. A game may still need its original store client, account sign-in, licensing check, or update service when you launch it.

What a library alternative can—and cannot—do

Aggregation is not ownership transfer

A library manager reads your connected accounts or local folders and creates a catalog. Your Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, Xbox, and emulator libraries remain separate. Buying, refunding, updating, or reinstalling a game still happens through the service that owns or distributes it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you select an entry, the manager normally hands off to the original platform. This keeps licensing intact but means an account client may open in the background. An aggregator therefore reduces hunting through menus; it does not remove every launcher or account requirement.

Three kinds of “one launcher”

  • Library manager: Playnite catalogs games from stores, emulators, and local sources and gives you desktop and fullscreen interfaces.
  • Cross-platform collection client: GOG GALAXY combines connected libraries with social, achievement, and statistics features.
  • Native Windows hub: The Xbox app surfaces supported installed PC games in one Microsoft interface, particularly useful with Game Pass and handheld PCs.

That distinction matters. If you want emulator entries, scripts, themes, and complete control over metadata, a manager is the appropriate category. If you mainly want a visually organized collection and friends list, a cross-platform client may be simpler. If your games are already installed on Windows and you want a controller-friendly home screen, the native hub may be enough.

Playnite: the strongest all-purpose Epic Games Launcher alternative

What Playnite supports

Playnite is described as a free, open-source video game library manager for Windows. It can connect gaming accounts, import libraries automatically, organize games from multiple stores and emulators, and launch each title on its original platform. Its documented third-party library support includes Steam, GOG, EA, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox, and emulated games.

The same installation can be used in desktop mode or fullscreen mode. Playtime tracking, custom add-ons, and themes let you build anything from a simple list to a console-style front end. Playnite’s documentation says library information is stored exclusively on the user’s PC, which is a useful local-data property for people who do not want their catalog hosted by another service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it is the best fit for fragmented collections

  • Broad source coverage: It handles major PC stores alongside emulators and games that do not come from a store.
  • Customization: Add-ons and themes can change metadata, views, artwork, filters, and launch behavior.
  • Two interfaces: Desktop mode is convenient for keyboard and mouse; fullscreen mode is designed for couch or controller use.
  • Local control: Catalog information remains on the PC according to Playnite’s documentation.
  • No paid tiers: The official product description says there are no paid upgrades, subscriptions, feature restrictions, or paywalls.

Trade-offs to understand

Playnite is not a single-store replacement. Initial setup is more involved because each integration must be enabled and authenticated, and emulator entries may need their own paths or import rules. Plugins are maintained separately, so an integration can change when a connected service changes its authentication or library behavior. Windows is the primary platform; the product’s documented handheld context is Windows devices such as Steam Deck running Windows or ROG Ally.

How to set up a unified Playnite library

  1. Install Playnite on Windows. Decide whether you want the standard desktop interface, fullscreen interface, or both. Fullscreen is the practical starting point for a television or handheld.
  2. Open the library and add integrations. Enable the connectors for the stores you use, such as Steam, GOG, EA, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, or Xbox.
  3. Authenticate each account separately. Sign in through the integration’s account flow. Your credentials and permissions remain governed by the connected service; Playnite does not turn separate accounts into one account.
  4. Import the libraries. Run the integration’s import or refresh operation. Let the first scan finish before changing metadata, otherwise artwork and playtime information may appear incomplete.
  5. Add emulators and local games. Point Playnite to the emulator or game locations, then review the detected entries. Correct paths or duplicate records before building filters.
  6. Choose metadata and artwork. Review titles, editions, covers, and backgrounds. Keep a consistent naming scheme if you have regional versions, remasters, or multiple emulator dumps.
  7. Create useful filters. Start with platform, installed status, genre, completion state, or controller support. Add tags for “short session,” “co-op,” or “handheld” rather than relying on a single giant favorites list.
  8. Configure fullscreen controls. Select a theme, map controller navigation, and test launching a game from the couch or handheld before moving your whole workflow.
  9. Refresh after major changes. Re-run imports after installing a new title, changing an account, or moving an emulator folder. Keep the original store clients available for updates and troubleshooting.

Who should choose Playnite

Choose it when your collection spans several stores, emulators, local installers, or older games; when you want a controller-first fullscreen interface; or when local catalog storage and deep customization matter more than a social network. It is also the clearest choice for a Windows gaming handheld that needs one front end for games installed from different places.

GOG GALAXY: the polished cross-platform collection

What GALAXY adds

GOG’s official GALAXY description says you can connect multiple platforms and unite games and friends in one app. It can import games from PC and consoles into a master collection, then provide filtering, sorting, tags, custom game backgrounds, and custom covers. Developer documentation for GALAXY 2.0 describes one application for connected libraries, friends, achievements, and statistics.

This emphasis makes GALAXY feel more like a finished catalog than a configurable front end. A person who wants attractive artwork, a searchable collection, and a single view of social activity may prefer it over a setup that requires selecting themes and add-ons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where GALAXY is strongest

  • Metadata organization: Filters, sorting, tags, covers, and backgrounds make a large collection easier to browse.
  • Social features: Connected friends, achievements, and statistics are visible alongside the game catalog.
  • Mixed-platform view: The master collection can include connected PC and console libraries, subject to each integration.
  • Lower setup friction: The principal workflow is connecting services and allowing the client to gather their data.

Limitations and account expectations

Each platform is connected separately, and an integration’s coverage or reliability can change. A title may be missing, duplicated, or represented with incomplete metadata if the source service does not expose all of its information. GALAXY remains closely associated with the GOG ecosystem even when it displays other platforms, so readers who want extensive emulator management, custom launch scripts, or a highly themed fullscreen shell may find Playnite more flexible.

The Xbox app for Windows: a native hub for supported installed games

What Microsoft’s aggregated library does

In an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 15, 2025, Microsoft described an aggregated gaming library for Windows PCs and handhelds. Supported PC storefront installations can automatically appear in My Library and the Most Recent list, allowing users to find and launch games from multiple locations in the Xbox app.

“When you install a game from a supported PC storefront, it automatically appears in ‘My Library’ within the Xbox PC app, as well as the ‘Most Recent’ list of titles in the sidebar.” — Jason Beaumont, VP of Experiences at Xbox

The practical benefit is minimal configuration for Windows users. Install a supported game, open the Xbox app, and look in My Library or Most Recent rather than remembering which storefront supplied it.

Best use cases

  • PC Game Pass subscribers: Game Pass titles and other supported installations can be found in the same Windows-oriented hub.
  • Windows handheld owners: The interface provides a native starting point when you want games from more than one supported storefront in a controller-friendly environment.
  • Users who dislike maintenance: Automatic appearance of supported installations avoids manually importing every title into a separate manager.

Where it falls short

The feature is centered on supported Windows storefronts and installed games. It is not the best match for emulator-heavy collections, portable games stored in unusual folders, extensive custom tags, or a themed front end. Coverage depends on which storefront integrations Microsoft supports at a given time. The Xbox app also does not eliminate the account or client requirements of the service that supplied a game.

How to combine Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, and Ubisoft games

For the broadest collection: use Playnite

  1. Install the stores and games normally, keeping each service’s account signed in as required.
  2. Enable one Playnite integration at a time and import its library.
  3. Check duplicates caused by editions, demos, or the same game appearing in more than one source.
  4. Add emulator and local-game locations only after the store imports are stable.
  5. Use tags and filters to separate installed games, uninstalled games, emulators, and games that need a particular controller.
  6. Test a sample from each store. If a title opens the wrong client, use the integration’s launch or edit controls rather than deleting the entry.

For a cleaner catalog and social view: use GOG GALAXY

  1. Connect each platform account from the integrations area.
  2. Wait for the master collection to populate before editing covers or tags.
  3. Use sorting and filters to identify duplicates and games that are no longer installed.
  4. Check friends, achievements, and statistics for the platforms where those features matter to you.
  5. Keep the original store clients installed; GALAXY is the view across services, not a replacement for their licensing systems.

For supported installed Windows games: use the Xbox app

  1. Install the Xbox app and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Windows gaming services.
  2. Install a game from a supported PC storefront.
  3. Open My Library and confirm that the title appears. Recently installed or launched games may also appear under Most Recent.
  4. Launch from the Xbox app, allowing the supplying storefront or account service to open if required.
  5. If a title does not appear, verify that it is installed, that the storefront is supported, and that the correct Windows account is signed in.

Choosing for a Windows gaming handheld

When Playnite is the better handheld shell

Playnite’s fullscreen interface is the most adaptable option when a handheld contains games from several stores, emulators, and local folders. You can build a single controller-driven menu and add tags for battery-friendly games, short sessions, or games that work offline. Playnite’s official material specifically describes the same setup being usable on handheld devices such as Steam Deck or ROG Ally.

When the Xbox app is enough

Use the Xbox app when the handheld runs Windows and your priority is quickly opening supported installed games, particularly Game Pass titles. It requires less catalog maintenance, but it will not organize every emulator or unusual local installation as deeply as Playnite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a handheld does not change

Hardware does not merge storefront accounts. You still need the relevant store clients, credentials, licenses, updates, and network checks. A fullscreen front end changes navigation; it does not change who owns a game or how that game is authenticated.

Privacy, maintenance, and reliability

Account connections

Connecting a service means granting an application access to the library information that service exposes. Use the least access necessary, review connected applications in the service’s account settings, and disconnect integrations you no longer use. Never treat a library manager as a vault for store passwords.

Keeping metadata accurate

Automatic imports are convenient but can create duplicate entries for deluxe editions, demos, regional releases, or the same installation detected by two integrations. Pick one canonical entry, hide or merge duplicates where the application allows it, and use tags for versions that you intentionally keep.

Handling integration changes

Store APIs, authentication flows, and privacy policies can change. If an import stops working, first refresh the integration and reauthenticate it. Then check whether the game still appears in the original client. If the store client sees the title but the aggregator does not, the problem is likely the integration rather than ownership or installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local data and backups

Playnite’s documentation states that library information is stored exclusively on the PC. Back up its library and configuration data if your tags, artwork, themes, or custom launch settings would be difficult to recreate. For GOG GALAXY and the Xbox app, assume that account connections and service availability remain part of the workflow because no equivalent local-only guarantee is established.

Troubleshooting common problems

A game appears twice

  • Check whether two store integrations detected the same installation.
  • Look for separate entries for a demo, deluxe edition, remaster, or emulator version.
  • Keep the entry with the correct launch target and hide or consolidate the other one.

A game is listed but will not launch

  • Open the original store client and launch the game there once.
  • Confirm that the correct account is signed in and that the game is installed.
  • Refresh the aggregator’s integration and test again.
  • If only one title fails, inspect its launch target or installation path instead of rebuilding the entire library.

Artwork or metadata is missing

  • Run another metadata or library refresh after the import completes.
  • Check for a title mismatch caused by regional naming or multiple editions.
  • Use manual artwork or tags for games that the source service does not describe completely.

An integration no longer imports games

  • Reauthenticate the account through the integration.
  • Verify the game is still visible in the original service.
  • Check the integration’s current support and any required add-on update.
  • Keep a backup or export of your local organization before making major changes.

A handheld interface feels awkward

  • Use a fullscreen layout designed for controller navigation rather than a desktop grid.
  • Reduce the number of visible fields and prioritize installed or favorite games.
  • Test suspend, resume, and launching from a cold boot; some store clients may still need to open behind the front end.

Which alternative should you choose?

Choose Playnite if…

You need the broadest combination of stores, emulators, local games, plugins, themes, fullscreen control, and local catalog storage. Accept a more hands-on setup in exchange for control over how the library behaves.

Choose GOG GALAXY if…

You care most about a polished collection with artwork, tags, sorting, friends, achievements, and statistics across linked platforms. Verify the integrations you depend on because their data coverage can differ.

Choose the Xbox app if…

You use Windows and Game Pass, mostly play supported installed PC titles, or want a native hub on a Windows gaming handheld. It is the lowest-maintenance option when its supported storefront coverage matches your collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use more than one when their roles differ

There is no requirement to make one application do everything. You can keep Playnite as a complete catalog, use GOG GALAXY for social and achievement views, and open the Xbox app for Game Pass discovery. The important boundary is that each game’s original store remains responsible for ownership, updates, and account authentication.

Bottom line

For a genuinely mixed PC collection, start with Playnite. Its documented store and emulator integrations, fullscreen mode, add-on system, and local library storage make it the most capable replacement for a single-store launcher. GOG GALAXY is the better presentation-first choice, while the Xbox app is the simplest native Windows hub for supported installed games and Game Pass users. Integration coverage changes over time, so test the accounts and titles you rely on before rebuilding your entire routine around any one front end.
