There is no independently verified “best” Enshrouded host for every group. The right choice depends on your active player count, total cost and billing term, server location, disclosed hardware, backup and restore controls, configuration access, and support. For most groups that want an always-on world without maintaining a PC, managed hosting is the simplest route. Self-hosting can cost less, but only if you already have suitable hardware, a reliable connection, and time to handle networking, updates, and backups.
Keen Games lists GPORTAL as a rental partner, while Nitrado and GTX Gaming also publish Enshrouded plans. Their advertised prices and features are useful starting points, not proof of a performance winner: no independent, cross-provider benchmark establishes which service has the lowest latency, fewest outages, or best value in every region.

What “best” means for an Enshrouded server
Enshrouded hosting is a choice between paying a provider to keep a dedicated world online and running the dedicated-server software yourself. A rental plan normally bundles the machine, data-center connection, control panel, and some level of support. Self-hosting removes the recurring rental bill, but you become responsible for hardware, port forwarding, availability, updates, security, and recovery.
Judge a plan against the way your group actually plays rather than against its slot number alone. A useful comparison uses the following questions:
#1 Best Overall
- Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000 - Craftworlds Spiritseer
- Plastic multipart miniatures - assembly required - tools, paints and glue not included
- Games Workshop
- How many people are active at the same time? Buy enough slots for the real party, with modest headroom for guests.
- What will the complete term cost? Compare the same number of slots, billing period, currency, taxes, introductory price, and renewal price.
- Where is the machine? A nearby region generally matters more to responsiveness than a small difference in advertised memory.
- What resources are disclosed? Look for CPU information, assigned memory, storage type, and whether resources are shared or guaranteed.
- Can you recover your world? Check backup frequency, retention, download access, and whether a restore can be started from the panel.
- Can you configure and migrate it? File access, JSON settings, save-file access, and a usable control panel reduce lock-in.
- What support is actually included? Confirm the support channel, hours, response expectations, and whether the advertised promise applies to your plan and region.
Slot count is capacity, not a performance benchmark. Provider claims about uptime, low latency, or hardware are marketing claims unless independently measured.
Current Enshrouded hosting options compared
| Option | Published offer or evidence | Questions to answer before buying |
|---|---|---|
| GPORTAL | Keen Games’ official FAQ names GPORTAL as a rental partner. A provider listing displays 4–16 slots, with plans from $9.40 per 30 days and example US Dallas configurations. | Is the price competitive for your exact slot count and term? Is a suitable region available? What backup, restore, file, and management features are included in the selected plan? |
| Nitrado | A published PC offer lists 6 slots for $9.79 per 30 days, 8 slots for $12.99 per 30 days, and 16 slots for $20.99 per 30 days. The offer describes automated backups, and its setup guide covers installation and configuration. | Does the available region suit the group? Are billing type, slot count, backup policy, and controls right for you? What is the renewal price? |
| GTX Gaming | A UK listing advertises a 4-slot plan from £4.32 per month, up to 5 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe storage, daily backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support. | Confirm local availability, exact resource allocation, renewal price, backup retention, and support terms. These are provider-published claims, not independent tests. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | Keen Games publishes dedicated-server hardware guidance and a Steam installation procedure. You supply the computer, network, storage, maintenance, and backups. | Can the machine meet the published CPU, memory, SSD, and upload guidance while staying online? Can you forward the required ports and recover both world and player data? |
The prices above are time-sensitive listings in different currencies. They should not be treated as a like-for-like ranking until you match region, taxes, slot count, billing duration, renewal terms, and included resources.
Which option fits your group?
Four to six players who want minimal administration
A small group can start with the lowest slot tier that covers its simultaneous players. Managed hosting is attractive when nobody wants to leave a home PC running or troubleshoot router settings. Compare the monthly total and the location first, then verify that backups and save downloads are available before uploading a valuable world.
Keen Games’ 2024 guidance uses a 4–6-player example that still calls for 16 GB of RAM, SSD storage, at least 30 GB free space, and 2 Mbit/s of upload capacity per player. Do not assume that a low slot count permits a weak, overloaded machine.
Eight to sixteen players or a growing community
For a larger group, prioritize a nearby region, a clearly stated CPU allocation, and predictable resources over a headline slot count. Nitrado’s published examples provide 8- and 16-slot price points; GPORTAL’s listing spans 4–16 slots. Ask how CPU time is shared and whether a plan can be upgraded without rebuilding the world.
Keen Games’ 16-player example calls for a stronger CPU than its 4–6-player example while retaining the 16 GB RAM recommendation. That makes processor capacity and contention especially important as the active population rises.
A technically confident owner with an always-on PC
Self-hosting can be economical when you already own a suitable computer, have a connection with enough upstream capacity, and can keep the machine powered on. It is not “free” in practice: electricity, hardware wear, operating-system maintenance, backups, and troubleshooting become your responsibility. A home connection behind carrier-grade NAT or a restrictive router may prevent incoming connections even when the server software is configured correctly.
What Enshrouded’s published requirements imply
Keen Games’ official figures come from two documents and have different dates. The 2024 dedicated-server guidance gives example hardware and network recommendations; the 2025 FAQ gives resource and storage observations. They are published guidance, not independent contemporary measurements.
| Item | Officially published figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Memory for 4–6 players | 16 GB RAM recommended (Keen Games, 2024) | Use this as the baseline for a dedicated machine, not as proof that every provider allocates 16 GB to a small plan. |
| Memory for 16 players | 16 GB RAM recommended (Keen Games, 2024) | The larger example also calls for a stronger CPU, so memory alone does not determine capacity. |
| Idle physical memory | Approximately 4.4 GB (Keen Games, 2025 FAQ) | This is an official published figure; leave headroom for the operating system and other services. |
| Additional memory per player | Up to 100 MB per player (Keen Games, 2025 FAQ) | Peak use can rise with active players; do not size a machine to idle usage only. |
| Server files | Approximately 13 GB uncompressed (Keen Games, 2025 FAQ) | Reserve substantially more than the file size for updates, logs, saves, and backups. |
| Free disk space | 30 GB recommended (Keen Games, 2025 FAQ) | An SSD is recommended in the dedicated-server examples. Keep backup copies outside the live-server directory. |
| Upload capacity | 2 Mbit/s per player recommended (Keen Games, 2024) | At 16 simultaneous players, that guidance implies 32 Mbit/s of upstream capacity before other household traffic and overhead. |
The 32 Mbit/s calculation is a direct multiplication of Keen Games’ per-player recommendation; it is a planning target, not a measured minimum. Leave additional margin for voice chat, updates, other users, and connection bursts.
How to compare provider plans without being misled
Normalize the price
- Write down the number of simultaneous players you need, such as four, six, eight, or sixteen.
- Convert every offer to the same duration, such as 30 days or 12 months.
- Record whether the displayed amount is introductory, recurring, tax-inclusive, or quoted in a different currency.
- Add paid extras for backups, additional storage, a reserved address, or a region change.
- Check the renewal amount and cancellation policy before committing.
For example, the published Nitrado figures are $9.79 for six slots, $12.99 for eight, and $20.99 for sixteen for 30 days. The GPORTAL listing begins at $9.40 per 30 days but spans multiple slot tiers, so the entry price cannot be compared directly with a sixteen-slot plan. GTX Gaming’s £4.32 figure is for a UK four-slot listing and is in pounds, making it unsuitable for a direct dollar comparison without the same term and currency basis.

Check location and connection quality
Choose a data-center region close to most players, then confirm that the exact plan is hosted there. “Worldwide” availability does not mean every tier exists in every city. If your group is split across continents, pick the location that minimizes the worst players’ latency rather than optimizing for one person.
Verify resources and controls
Ask whether listed memory is dedicated or shared, what CPU model or allocation applies, and whether storage is SSD or NVMe. Confirm that the panel exposes the Enshrouded JSON configuration, save files, logs, restart controls, and update controls. If a provider will not let you download your world, migration and disaster recovery are harder.
Read the backup terms
“Automated” or “daily” backups describe a schedule, not a recovery guarantee. Confirm retention length, the number of restore points, whether backups are stored separately from the server, and whether you can download a copy. Test a restore with a disposable world before relying on the feature.
Managed hosting: what each published option tells you
GPORTAL
Keen Games’ official FAQ identifies GPORTAL as a rental partner whose servers can be rented from inside the game. That relationship makes it a convenient starting point, but it does not establish superior performance or price. The published offer displays 4–16 slots, plans from $9.40 per 30 days, and example configurations in US Dallas.

Use the in-game availability and checkout to confirm the region, exact slot tier, recurring amount, backups, and management tools. Treat the partner status as an official distribution relationship, not as a universal recommendation.
Nitrado
Nitrado’s published PC examples list 6, 8, and 16 slots on 30-day terms at $9.79, $12.99, and $20.99 respectively. Its offer describes automated backups, and its setup documentation covers installation and configuration. Those details can suit a group that wants an established panel and a clear path from purchase to configuration.
Before paying, check whether the listed price is the recurring rate, which data centers are offered for the exact plan, and how backups can be downloaded or restored. Confirm the query and game-port settings in the panel rather than copying a port number from an unrelated server.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →GTX Gaming
GTX Gaming’s UK listing advertises a four-slot plan from £4.32 per month, up to 5 GB of RAM, 100 GB of NVMe storage, daily backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support. These are claims made by the provider. The listing does not provide an independent test of uptime, latency, CPU contention, or support response.
It is a candidate for a UK-based small group, but verify the actual node, resource limits, renewal price, backup retention, and support scope. A large storage allowance does not by itself make a server faster; Enshrouded’s CPU and network behavior still matter.
Self-hosting from Steam
Keen Games’ installation article says the title includes a dedicated-server executable. Follow the current official instructions at Dedicated Server Installation on Steam. The article’s February 2024 platform statement said Windows was supported and Linux support was planned at that time; do not treat that old statement as proof of current Linux support. Check the current documentation and server package before choosing an operating system.
- Install the tool. In the Steam client, open Library, change the library filter to Tools, and install the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool.
- Generate the configuration. Start the dedicated-server executable once. It creates
enshrouded_server.jsonin the server directory. - Edit the JSON. Stop the process, open the generated file in a text editor, and set the server name, password, slots, and other available settings using the current official schema. Preserve valid JSON syntax and make a backup before changing it.
- Prepare storage. Place the server on an SSD with at least 30 GB free, while keeping additional space for copies of world saves, logs, and updates.
- Configure the network. Give the host a stable local address and forward the ports required by the current server documentation and your router. Nitrado’s setup guide describes query testing and forwarding UDP ports 15636–15637; port requirements can vary with the host network, so confirm the current official and provider instructions.
- Allow the process through the firewall. Permit the server executable and required UDP traffic on the host operating system. Test from a different network, not only from the same home LAN.
- Start and test. Join with one client, verify the world loads, check the query response, and then invite the rest of the group. Record the working configuration.
- Automate maintenance. Schedule controlled restarts, apply updates during an agreed window, monitor disk space, and copy saves to a separate device or account.
Port forwarding cannot overcome carrier-grade NAT, a blocked inbound connection, or a changing public address. If outside players cannot connect after firewall and router checks, ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are available or use a managed host.

Keen Games’ FAQ states that character progression is stored on client machines, while the dedicated server stores a save file for each world. This distinction is critical when moving hosts or recovering from a failure:
- World backup: Copy the server’s world save files regularly and keep at least one copy away from the live machine.
- Character continuity: A world restore does not necessarily replace the character-progression data held on each player’s computer.
- Migration: Download the world save and configuration, stop the old server cleanly, install the new server, and validate the world with one player before everyone reconnects.
- Recovery test: Periodically restore a copy to a temporary instance. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Managed hosts differ in how they expose these files. Confirm the exact save-data location and download method before you build a long-running world around a plan.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server appears online but players cannot join
- Check that the server process is running and listening on the configured ports.
- Verify UDP forwarding and the host firewall, including the correct local IP address.
- Test from a mobile hotspot or another outside network to rule out a LAN-only success.
- Ask whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic.
- Confirm that the provider’s panel shows the same query and game ports you are testing.
Players report lag or rubber-banding
- Compare player locations with the selected data-center region.
- Check CPU load, memory pressure, disk latency, and upstream saturation while several players are active.
- Stop unrelated processes, downloads, and scheduled backups during play.
- Ask the provider whether the node is shared and whether a higher resource tier is available.
- Do not infer a performance problem from slot count alone; capture the timing, player count, and server load first.
The world disappeared after an update or migration
- Stop the server before copying or replacing save files.
- Check the provider’s documented save-data directory and timestamps.
- Restore the newest known-good world backup to a separate test instance.
- Keep the original files untouched until the restored world has been verified.
- Remember that client-side character progression may reside on each player’s machine rather than in the world file.
The server runs out of disk space
The official FAQ cites roughly 13 GB of uncompressed server files and recommends 30 GB free. Logs, updates, temporary files, and backup copies can consume the remainder. Monitor free space and store historical backups on separate storage instead of filling the live server volume.
A purchase checklist
Before ordering a managed plan, save the checkout page and confirm every item below:
- Slot count matches simultaneous players, not an optimistic future maximum.
- Region is available on the exact plan and is near most players.
- Price is recurring, tax treatment and currency are understood, and renewal is affordable.
- CPU and RAM allocation are stated clearly enough to compare.
- Storage is SSD or NVMe and includes enough free capacity for saves and updates.
- Backups have a stated schedule, retention, restore process, and download option.
- Configuration, save-file, log, and restart controls are accessible.
- Support hours and contact methods match when your group normally plays.
- Cancellation and migration procedures do not trap your world in the provider’s panel.
For self-hosting, add these checks:
- The computer meets Keen Games’ published CPU, 16 GB RAM, SSD, free-space, and upload guidance.
- The machine can stay online and restart automatically after a power or software failure.
- Your router and internet service permit the required inbound UDP traffic.
- You have a separate backup destination and a tested restore procedure.
- You can keep the operating system, Steam tool, and server files updated.
Bottom line: choose by evidence, not by a universal ranking
For a group that values convenience, compare GPORTAL, Nitrado, and GTX Gaming on the same slot count, region, term, resource allocation, and backup policy. GPORTAL has the official rental-partner relationship; Nitrado publishes several clear slot-and-price examples with automated backups; GTX Gaming publishes a low-cost UK four-slot offer with specified storage, backups, DDoS protection, and support. None of those facts proves a provider-wide performance win.
Self-host when you already have the hardware, network access, and maintenance discipline. Otherwise, select the managed plan whose location, total recurring cost, controls, and recovery terms fit your group. Recheck the provider’s current checkout and Keen Games’ current server documentation immediately before deployment, because prices, regions, and compatibility can change.
