There is no single electric mower that is best for every lawn. The Gadgeteer’s May 2026 comparison lists five cordless models—EGO, Ryobi, Greenworks, Milwaukee and DeWalt—while Popular Mechanics’ September 2026 recommendations divide winners by use case. Taken together, they offer a useful shortlist, not a shared head-to-head test or a universal ranking. The right choice depends on mowable grass area, terrain, battery kit, drive type and the tools you already own.
Five electric mower picks at a glance
The specifications and prices below are from The Gadgeteer’s May 2026 comparison, which traced them to manufacturer pages or retailer listings. Prices are historical snapshots, not current quotes; check the live listing, region and included kit before buying. Runtime figures are published estimates, not results from a common independent test.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| EGO LM2156SP | 21-inch deck; 56V, 10.0Ah battery | Self-propelled; up to 75 minutes | $1,399 | All-around option for a larger residential lawn |
| Ryobi RY40HPLM07K | 20-inch deck; 40V HP, 6.0Ah battery | Self-propelled; runtime varies by load | From $449 at Home Depot | Value pick, especially for an owner already invested in the compatible platform |

Which mower suits your yard?
For a larger residential lawn: EGO LM2156SP
The Gadgeteer’s listed configuration pairs a 21-inch deck and 10.0Ah battery with self-propelled drive and up to 75 minutes of runtime. Those figures make it a plausible all-around choice for a larger lawn, but actual runtime changes with grass and mowing conditions. It is not automatically the best choice if the yard is small, storage is tight or the upfront price is the deciding factor.
#1 Best Overall
- [16" LAWN MOWER] - This 40V lawn mower cuts up to 1/3 acre with fully charged 4.0Ah battery (varies based on grass condition and operator technique)
- [ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT] - 35% lighter than steel deck mowers
- [SINGLE LEVER HEIGHT ADJUST] - 5 position height adjustment
- [2-IN-1 SYSTEM] - Mulch and rear bagging
- 3-Year Warranty – Backed by Greenworks 3-year limited tool and battery warranty for dependable long-term ownership. Works with 75+ Greenworks 40V tools(trimmers, blowers, chainsaws...)—expand your cordless toolkit.
For value or an existing compatible tool battery platform: Ryobi RY40HPLM07K
The 20-inch, 40V HP model is self-propelled and uses a 6.0Ah battery in the listed configuration. The Gadgeteer reports runtime varies by load, so it does not support a fixed runtime promise. Its May 2026 listed starting price was $449 at Home Depot; verify today’s price and bundle. If you already own compatible equipment, platform compatibility may make the kit more attractive, but confirm battery and charger compatibility for this exact mower.
For a push mower in the Greenworks 80V line: Greenworks Pro 80V LM2138
This 21-inch mower is a push model, with a listed 4.0Ah battery and up to 60 minutes of runtime. It may suit shoppers who prefer the 80V platform and do not need self-propelled drive. The Gadgeteer’s comparison placed its listing below the $629.99 Greenworks Gen 2 self-propelled model at Costco; that is a comparison to a different mower, not a stated price for the LM2138. Check the live listing for the actual LM2138 price and kit.
For a Milwaukee-tool-platform household: Milwaukee 2823-22HD
The listed kit includes two M18 12.0Ah batteries, a 21-inch deck and self-propelled drive, with up to 60 minutes of stated runtime. Its $2,398 May 2026 listed price is high relative to the other entries, so weigh the complete kit and platform fit rather than voltage or battery capacity alone.

The Gadgeteer’s May 2026 price of about $259 is unusually low for the described configuration. Treat it as an unverified historical listing, and confirm price, stock and exactly what is included before relying on it.
How 2026 editorial picks differ by use case
Popular Mechanics’ list, updated September 18, 2026, assigns awards across several categories rather than naming five interchangeable winners. Its picks are the EGO Power+ 56V 21-inch Select Cut XP (best overall), Ryobi 40V HP 21-inch (best value), Greenworks 80V 22-inch self-propelled (best gas-mower replacement), Greenworks 40V 16-inch (best for yards under 0.15 acres), and Echo 56V 21-inch push (best push mower for thick grass). These are that publication’s category recommendations; they do not validate every configuration in The Gadgeteer’s five-model comparison or establish one combined test ranking. See Popular Mechanics’ electric mower recommendations.
How to choose for your lawn
1. Estimate the grass you actually mow
Use the area of lawn, not the total property lot: houses, paths, patios, beds and other non-grass areas reduce the space the mower must cover. Slopes, dense or wet grass, and frequent stops can also change runtime. Honda’s guidance for specified residential models estimates about 30 minutes and roughly ¼ acre with an 8Ah battery, and about 45 minutes and 0.37 acres with a 12Ah battery on specified HRX-BE/HRC-BE configurations. These are manufacturer estimates for those configurations, not universal guarantees for other mowers. Honda lawn-mower guidance.
Rank #3
- EXCEEDS THE POWER OF GAS: EGO's cordless electric mower delivers up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque for performance that exceeds gas-powered mowers.
- UP TO 60 MINUTES OF RUNTIME: The EGO electric lawn mower operates for up to 60 minutes on a single charge with the included 56V 7.5Ah battery.
- TOUCH DRIVE SELF-PROPELLED TECHNOLOGY: The EGO 800 Series lawn mower is a self propelled electric lawn mower. Use the pressure of your palm to engage the self-propel system, and control the variable speed with a dial positioned at your fingertips.
- SELECT CUT MULTI-BLADE CUTTING SYSTEM: Customize your cut with interchangeable lower blades; the battery powered mower includes mulching, high-lift bagging, and extended runtime lower blades, plus an upper blade.
- MOW AT YOUR PACE: The EGO self propelled lawn mower lets you adjust your speed between 0.9 and 3.1 miles per hour.
2. Compare the whole battery kit and platform
Check battery count, amp-hour capacity, whether the charger is included, whether the mower has a second battery bay, and whether your existing compatible tools share its platform. Voltage alone does not tell you how long a mower will run or how well it will cut. A kit with two batteries may have a different value proposition from a bare tool, so compare like with like and verify exact compatibility in the model documentation.
3. Balance deck width against maneuverability
A wider deck can cover more ground per pass, while a smaller mower can be easier to steer around beds and store in a cramped shed. Popular Mechanics says many electric walk-behind mowers are in the 20–22-inch range and describes models from 14 to 30 inches wide. Choose based on the shape of your lawn as well as its area; a wide deck is not useful if it makes narrow passages awkward.
4. Decide whether self-propelled drive and cutting options matter
Self-propelled drive reduces the effort of pushing, particularly on slopes or larger lawns, but the Greenworks Pro 80V in this shortlist is a push mower. Check each exact model for mulching, bagging and side discharge, along with bag capacity and cutting-height adjustment. Do not infer these features from another mower in the same brand’s line; specifications differ by model.
Rank #4
- WIDER MORE EVEN CUTTING: The 17-inch cutting deck and 6 height settings from 1 to 3 inches (25–75 mm) help this cordless lawn mower deliver a cleaner, more even finish across small and medium lawns.
- DUAL BATTERY EXTENDED RUNTIME: Powered by two 20V 4.0Ah batteries, this walk behind lawn mower runs for up to 40 minutes and covers up to 5,380 sq. ft. (500 m²) per charge under test conditions.
- LARGE CAPACITY GRASS COLLECTION: The 50L collection bag holds more clippings between emptying cycles, while regular cleaning around the inlet and blade area helps this lawn mower maintain reliable grass collection.
- HIGH OUTPUT BRUSHLESS POWER: The 3000 RPM brushless motor delivers up to 1200W max output, helping this electric battery powered lawn mower maintain steady blade speed through routine residential grass.
- SIMPLE START PORTABLE DESIGN: One-button activation and a pull-bar start make operation straightforward, while the 14 kg lightweight body makes this cordless lawn mower easier to carry, position, and store.
5. Check storage, warranty and service
Confirm whether the particular mower supports vertical or folded storage, and review the warranty for both mower and battery. Also check whether local service is practical. These details vary across models and markets; the US-oriented configurations and listings in the May 2026 comparison may not match what is sold elsewhere. Popular Mechanics and Honda provide additional model-specific context, while Pro Tool Reviews is another publication covering tools and outdoor equipment.

The five-model list is a buyer-facing shortlist assembled from named editorial recommendations, not a standardized rating or one shared laboratory comparison. The Gadgeteer’s May 2026 table supplies the five configurations and historical listing prices; Popular Mechanics’ September 2026 article supplies separate use-case awards. Their recommendations can help narrow choices, but they should not be read as proof that all listed models were tested against one another under the same conditions. Current prices, availability and bundled batteries can also differ by retailer and region.
