Start with the task, not the old extension’s name. For ad and content blocking, Microsoft lists uBlock Origin Lite as an MV3-based Edge extension and it is the clearest researched alternative to legacy uBlock Origin. For password management, Bitwarden Password Manager is listed in Edge Add-ons, while Dark Reader is listed for page appearance. Microsoft’s catalog evidence does not establish that Bitwarden or Dark Reader use Manifest V3, nor that any option is a one-for-one replacement.
Edge’s consumer move away from Manifest V2 (MV2) begins in August 2026 and is targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Enterprise deprecation is expected in early 2027. Because Manifest V3 (MV3) changes extension APIs, permissions and background processing, choose and test a replacement by the job it performs.
Microsoft Edge’s Manifest V2 transition: dates that matter
Microsoft announced on August 7, 2026 that the consumer transition away from MV2 starts in August 2026, with a goal of completing it by the end of 2026. Enterprise deprecation is expected to follow in early 2027. Microsoft also said that 95% of the top MV2 extensions on the Edge Add-ons website had already moved to MV3 at the time of that announcement. That is Microsoft’s figure for the top extensions on its catalog, not a measurement of every extension or proof that every popular add-on has a verified successor.

The practical consequence is that an extension can remain visible today while its update path is already closing. An extension that has merely the same name, category or publisher as an MV2 add-on is not automatically equivalent.

Why an MV3 replacement can feel different
MV3 is a platform change, not just a new label in an extension manifest. Microsoft’s migration documentation identifies four changes that directly affect everyday behavior.
Remote code is no longer permitted
MV3 extensions cannot load remotely hosted executable code. A developer must package the executable logic with the extension and distribute changes through the store’s review and update process. This can alter how an extension delivers rules, scripts or feature updates.
Website access can be requested at runtime
Extensions can request or restrict website access at runtime. A replacement may therefore ask for access only when you use a feature, or it may expose a different permission workflow from the old add-on. Read the permission dialog and the extension’s listing instead of assuming that a familiar name means familiar access.

Network modification uses declarativeNetRequest
MV3 moves network-request modification to the declarativeNetRequest API. The extension declares rules that the browser evaluates rather than freely running the same blocking logic used by many MV2 add-ons. Microsoft says Edge retains observational Web Request capabilities and identifies an enterprise-managed exception for blocking behavior. Those platform details explain why two blockers can show different controls, rule formats or site results.
Background pages become service workers
Persistent background pages are replaced by event-driven service workers. A service worker starts when an event requires it and can stop when idle. Extensions built around continuous background activity, long-running connections or extensive state may therefore expose a different workflow even when the user-facing task is unchanged.

Replacing uBlock Origin: what uBlock Origin Lite actually establishes
If your old add-on’s job is blocking advertising, trackers or unwanted page elements, uBlock Origin Lite is the strongest specifically documented candidate in this guide. Microsoft’s Edge Add-ons listing describes it as an MV3-based content blocker. That establishes its platform direction and broad task, but not parity with full uBlock Origin.
Install it from Edge Add-ons
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to
edge://extensions. - Select Get extensions from Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
- Search for uBlock Origin Lite and open the result whose publisher and listing match the Microsoft catalog entry.
- Select Get, read the requested permissions, and confirm with Add extension.
- Pin the extension from Edge’s Extensions menu so its site controls are easy to reach.
Test the replacement before removing the old blocker
- Open several ad-heavy pages and pages where your old blocker had custom rules.
- Check whether the Lite extension exposes the per-site controls and filtering choices you actually use.
- Test a site that previously required an allow-list exception; verify that the exception can be created and persists after restarting Edge.
- Compare page rendering, login flows and embedded media. A page that worked with full uBlock Origin may behave differently under MV3 rules.
Do not describe uBlock Origin Lite as “the same as uBlock Origin.” The available evidence supports “MV3-based alternative for the same broad blocking task,” while filter-capability and control equivalence remain unestablished.

Bitwarden Password Manager appears in Microsoft’s Edge Add-ons catalog and is a reasonable candidate when your MV2 add-on stored credentials, generated passwords or filled login forms. The catalog evidence provided for this article does not verify Bitwarden’s manifest version or a migration path from a particular legacy extension.
Check the listing before installing
- Search the Edge Add-ons catalog for Bitwarden Password Manager.
- Confirm the publisher shown on the current listing and read the permissions requested by your installed Edge version.
- Review the listing’s compatibility information and update history. Do not rely on a search-result snippet or an identically named item from an unrelated publisher.
- Install it and pin it to the toolbar only after you are satisfied that the listing is authentic.
Validate the complete password workflow
- Unlock the vault and confirm that the extension can communicate with its desktop or web account workflow, if you use one.
- Test filling an existing login, saving a new login and generating a password.
- Check multi-step sign-in pages, passkey or two-factor prompts and domains with unusual subdomains.
- Keep the old extension available until you have confirmed that your stored data and everyday fills work. Export data only through the old extension’s documented export function and protect the exported file because it may contain readable credentials.
Because the manifest version and one-for-one compatibility are not established here, treat Bitwarden as a catalog-listed option to evaluate, not as a guaranteed MV3 replacement.
Replacing a dark-mode or appearance add-on
Dark Reader is listed in the Edge Add-ons catalog and may suit readers whose old MV2 extension changed page colors or enabled dark mode. The evidence available for this guide does not verify Dark Reader’s manifest version or replacement compatibility for a named legacy add-on.

Evaluate appearance rather than the name
- Open the current Edge Add-ons listing for Dark Reader and verify the publisher and permissions.
- Install it in a test profile or while keeping your current appearance extension available.
- Check ordinary articles, image-heavy pages, code blocks, shopping forms and browser-based editors.
- Test whether site-specific exclusions, brightness or contrast controls and automatic mode changes are available in the installed version.
Appearance extensions often need broad website access to modify page styles. Read the permission prompt and decide whether that access matches your privacy expectations. A catalog listing alone does not prove that every control from an MV2 predecessor exists.

Microsoft Support says Edge users can install extensions from a Chromium-compatible store such as the Chrome Web Store when the desired item is missing from Edge Add-ons. This route expands the catalog, but it does not remove the need to check compatibility or safety.
Use a Chromium-store listing carefully
- Search the external Chromium-compatible store for the exact extension name and publisher.
- Compare the publisher, icon, description and support links with the developer’s known identity. Avoid similarly named copies.
- Read the permissions and note whether the extension can read or change data on all websites, selected sites or only when activated.
- Check the listing’s update date and version. An old listing may be technically installable but functionally abandoned.
- In Edge, open
edge://extensionsand enable the control that allows extensions from other stores if Edge presents it. - Install, then test the extension in a separate profile or with non-critical sites before making it part of your daily workflow.
Do not assume that a Chromium-compatible package has been tested for Edge, that its MV3 behavior matches Chrome’s, or that it will remain available. If the listing does not identify a current publisher, clear permissions and active support, skip it.
A repeatable MV2-to-MV3 migration process
1. Inventory the task, not just the extension
Write down what each old add-on does: blocking network requests, changing page colors, filling credentials, managing tabs, clipping notes or running scripts. Record the sites where it is essential and any custom rules, allow-lists, exports or keyboard shortcuts. This prevents a broad category match from hiding a critical feature.
2. Check the current Edge listing
Search Edge Add-ons using the exact name and publisher. Look for an updated listing, an explicit MV3 statement and a current permissions description. If the listing does not state its manifest version, mark it as unverified rather than inferring it from the update date.

3. Compare permissions and controls
Place the old extension’s permissions beside the candidate’s. A replacement that asks for access to every website may perform the same visible job but create a different privacy trade-off. Also compare the controls you rely on: per-site exceptions, custom rules, import and export, scheduling, keyboard shortcuts and background behavior.
4. Preserve settings safely
Use the old extension’s built-in export function when available. Store exports securely, remove them after a successful import and never paste credential databases or private tokens into support forums. If no export exists, capture only the settings you can recreate without exposing secrets.
5. Install and test in parallel
Install the candidate, then test your documented sites and workflows. Watch for changed page rendering, missing buttons, unexpected permission prompts, sign-in failures or settings that reset after an Edge restart. Keep the old extension until the candidate passes the tests, but do not leave two extensions performing conflicting actions permanently.
6. Remove the old add-on after validation
When the replacement works, return to edge://extensions, select the old extension’s Remove option and confirm that your new extension remains enabled. If Edge disables the old MV2 extension first, use your inventory and saved settings to prioritize the most important replacement rather than installing several unverified copies.

Edge warns that an extension is deprecated or disables it
Open edge://extensions and read the warning. Search Edge Add-ons for the publisher’s current listing, then compare permissions and features before installing it. If no maintained listing exists, use the Chromium-store route only after checking publisher identity, compatibility and permissions.

The replacement installs but a site behaves differently
First determine whether the difference is intentional MV3 behavior. Network blocking now uses declarative rules, website access can be granted at runtime, and background work runs through service workers. Check the replacement’s options and per-site controls, then test whether an exception solves the problem. If the required control does not exist, the candidate is not a functional replacement for that task.
A password extension fills the wrong account or does not fill
Confirm that the vault is unlocked, the saved login matches the site’s exact domain and the extension has permission to operate on that page. Test a normal login and a multi-step login separately. Do not weaken security by granting broad access permanently unless the extension’s documented workflow requires it.
Dark mode breaks images, editors or code
Check the appearance extension’s site exclusions and rendering controls. Test the affected page after disabling only that site’s transformation. If the installed version lacks the exclusion or rendering mode you need, keep looking rather than assuming every dark-mode extension offers the same controls.

The extension is absent from Edge Add-ons
Use a compatible Chromium store only when the listing is current and the publisher is identifiable. If the extension is a high-privilege tool such as a password manager, script runner or privacy controller and the listing is stale or unclear, waiting for a maintained Edge listing is safer than installing an unverified copy.
What this guide does not establish
The researched examples do not provide verified replacements for every popular MV2 category. In particular, there is not enough evidence here to name dependable substitutes for legacy session managers, download tools, note clippers, script managers or other privacy add-ons. Those choices require an extension-by-extension check of the current listing, manifest version, permissions and feature set.
Use the 95% figure from Microsoft’s August 7, 2026 announcement as a sign that the ecosystem is moving, not as a guarantee that your favorite add-on has a compatible successor. The safest decision is the one that matches your exact task, confirms the current listing and survives a real test of the sites and controls you depend on.
