The best alternative depends on how the buyer will receive the item. For local pickup, start with Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp. For a shipped general-purpose sale, Mercari is the clearest fit. Use Etsy only for qualifying vintage or other goods that meet its creative-goods standards. Before listing, compare the total fee, shipping work, payment release rules, protection limits, and the practical safety of the handoff—not just the headline commission.
Choose the selling method first
A used sofa, power tool, phone, or set of dishes can be a good local listing but a poor parcel shipment. Conversely, a small collectible may attract a better buyer pool when you are willing to pack and ship it. Decide between these two paths before choosing an app:
- Local pickup: You avoid boxes, labels, postage, and carrier claims. You must answer location questions, arrange a meeting, and manage payment and personal safety yourself.
- Shipping: You can reach buyers outside your area, but you add packing, postage, tracking, deadline, return, and platform-protection requirements. The item also has to fit the service’s package and category rules.
Facebook’s delivery features depend on the seller’s location and account. OfferUp’s current support guidance says its service is local pickup only. Mercari supports shipped sales, while Etsy is limited to items that fit its creative-goods rules. Those differences are more important than a small difference in commission.

Quick comparison of the main alternatives
| Platform | Best fit | Sale method | Published cost or rule | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace | Ordinary household goods and nearby buyers | Local pickup; shipping may appear for some sellers and locations | Check the options shown in your account and location | Delivery and checkout availability is not universal |
| Craigslist | Local classified listings, bulky goods, and category-specific sales | Primarily local, arranged directly with the buyer | US owner-sale posts range from $0 to $5; vehicle categories listed by Craigslist are $5 | Fees vary by category and geographic area |
| OfferUp | Local pickup when you want an app built around nearby transactions | Local pickup only under the September 22, 2026 support guidance | No shipping workflow for current listings | Older articles may incorrectly describe shipping |
| Mercari | Small or medium general goods that can be packed and mailed | Shipping with your own postage or a prepaid platform label | For new or updated US listings from January 6, 2025: 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping; listing is free | Package, category, deadline, and protection rules apply |
| Etsy | Eligible vintage, handmade, designed, handpicked, or sourced goods | Usually shipped, with seller-managed policies | Separate listing, transaction, payment-processing, and possible advertising charges | Not a general outlet for any used possession |
Best local alternatives
Facebook Marketplace: the broadest first stop for everyday items
Facebook says an individual can sell through Marketplace, buy-and-sell groups, or a Page. That makes it practical for furniture, appliances, clothing bundles, tools, toys, and other items whose shipping cost would consume the sale price. You can target a radius, state a pickup area, and communicate in the platform’s messaging system.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
- Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
- Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
- Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz
Do not assume every account has the same delivery tools. Facebook says shipping may be available depending on where the seller lives, so open the listing flow and verify whether shipping, checkout, and any required payment setup are offered to you. If those controls are absent, treat the listing as a local transaction rather than promising delivery.
How to make a safer Facebook local listing
- Photograph the complete item, including serial numbers, model labels, damage, and accessories.
- Use a precise title and disclose defects in the description instead of relying on photographs alone.
- State the pickup area rather than your home address. Give the exact address only after you have agreed on a meeting time.
- Keep messages and agreed price in the platform conversation. Be cautious if a buyer immediately asks for a code, requests an overpayment, or insists on moving to an unrelated payment link.
- For a high-value handoff, meet in a busy public place or a designated safe-exchange area, and do not allow a stranger to enter your home alone.
Craigslist: simple classifieds with category-dependent fees
Craigslist remains useful when the item is too large to ship or when you want a straightforward classified ad rather than a managed checkout. Buyers contact you directly, so you control the questions, appointment, and payment method.
It is not universally free. Craigslist’s US fee table lists for-sale-by-owner postings at $0–$5, while cars, trucks, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles/campers are listed at $5. The site says fees vary by geographic location, and the posting flow determines the amount for your category. A posting fee is a one-time charge, not a subscription or recurring seller plan.
Rank #2
- Digital tabletop postal scale for quickly and precisely weighing items
- Includes a shipping postal scale and AC adapter; made of durable black ABS, aluminum, and iron
- 65 pound (30kg) capacity reads to 0.1 ounce (1g) in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 0.2 ounces (5g)
- Extra large LCD display for easy viewing; measuring units in ounces, pounds, g, and kg
- Tare function for resetting the scale to zero after setting a container on the platform; great for net weights
When Craigslist is the better local choice
- The item is bulky, fragile, or inexpensive to ship, such as a desk, appliance, exercise machine, or patio set.
- You want to describe several related items in one classified post and negotiate directly.
- Your local market is active on classified sites but your social profile is not suited to public selling.
Because payment and pickup are arranged directly, never treat a screenshot of a payment notification as proof that money arrived. Confirm the funds in your own bank or payment account before releasing the item, and avoid unusual requests involving gift cards, refunds, or third-party couriers.
OfferUp: local pickup only under the current policy
OfferUp’s support article updated September 22, 2026 says the service supports local, in-person transactions only. Its transition history says newly posted items lost shipping on September 23, 2025, and shipping was removed from most existing listings by October 21, 2025. If you find an older guide calling OfferUp a shipping marketplace, treat that information as outdated.
OfferUp can therefore be considered alongside Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist when you are willing to meet a nearby buyer. It is not the choice for a seller who needs a prepaid label, carrier tracking, or a nationwide parcel audience.

Preparing an OfferUp pickup
- Set a firm pickup window and a public meeting point before sharing your exact location.
- Confirm the item is still available immediately before leaving; local buyers sometimes change plans.
- Bring the item only when you are comfortable with the buyer’s identity and the agreed payment method.
- Mark the listing sold as soon as the handoff is complete so you do not continue receiving messages for unavailable inventory.
Best shipped alternative for ordinary used goods: Mercari
Mercari is the most direct fit in this group when the item is small enough to pack and you want a nationwide shipped sale. Its US fee page says listings are free and that new or updated listings from January 6, 2025 carry a seller fee of 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. The 10% calculation is not simply a percentage of your final bank deposit: account for the item price, the buyer’s shipping charge, your packing materials, and any optional payout cost when estimating proceeds.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use your own shipping or a Mercari prepaid label. With a prepaid label, Mercari’s seller-protection page states that shipping protection is available up to $200, subject to the platform’s terms. After a sale, the same guidance gives you three days to pack the item and drop it with the carrier. Missing that window can affect the transaction, so do not list an item that you cannot prepare promptly.
Mercari’s payment and payout sequence
- Create an accurate listing with condition, dimensions, included parts, and any flaw that could affect a buyer’s rating.
- Choose your shipping method and use packaging that protects the item while staying within the package limits shown in the current shipping options.
- After the sale, pack and hand the parcel to the carrier within the stated three-day period. Keep the drop-off receipt and tracking evidence.
- Wait for the buyer’s rating; Mercari says payment is released after the buyer rates the transaction.
- If you use Instant Pay to transfer available funds, the current fee page lists $3 per completed transfer. That is a payout convenience charge, not an additional selling commission.
Items that need another route
Mercari’s fee documentation says national shipping is unsupported for motorized items, furniture, bicycles, and major appliances. Those categories are usually better candidates for local pickup on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp. Check the current package-size and prohibited-item rules before listing anything unusually heavy, long, fragile, or powered; a buyer’s willingness to pay does not override a carrier or platform restriction.
Rank #4
- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
Shipping protection is conditional rather than a guarantee against every loss or dispute. Photograph the item’s condition before packing, photograph the packed box, use the prescribed label correctly, and retain the carrier acceptance record. Those steps give you evidence if the tracking, damage, or delivery record is later questioned.
Etsy is a specialist option, not a general used-goods marketplace
Etsy accepts goods that meet its Creativity Standards: items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced as Etsy describes. Eligible vintage pieces can qualify, but an ordinary used household item does not become suitable merely because it is old or secondhand. A vintage lamp with the required provenance or a curated collectible may fit; a random used microwave generally does not.

US Etsy charges to include in your calculation
| Charge | Published US example | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 per listing, active for four months or until sale | Applies even before a sale; confirm the current term when creating the listing |
| Transaction | 6.5%, including seller-set shipping | Calculate it on the transaction amount covered by Etsy’s definition |
| Payment processing | 3% plus $0.25 US example | Processing varies by the bank country |
| Offsite Ads | 15% below $10,000 in Etsy sales over the prior 365 days; 12% at or above that threshold, subject to Help Center rules and cap | Applies only when the order is attributed to an offsite advertisement |
Etsy also says a one-time shop setup fee may apply. Country-specific terms and other regional charges can change the total, so treat the figures above as the stated US examples rather than a universal worldwide price.

Returns and Purchase Protection
The seller is responsible for the shop’s return policy and must set one for each new or edited physical-item listing, even when the policy is no returns. Etsy’s current help documentation says eligible Purchase Protection may cover up to $250 in specified cases; remaining refund amounts can be charged to the seller. Eligibility conditions matter, and the documentation distinguishes cases opened before May 7, 2026. Read the live policy for the order date and destination instead of assuming every dispute receives coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare your expected payout
Use a simple worksheet for each platform. Start with the realistic selling price, then subtract every cost that applies to that channel:
- Listing or posting charge.
- Transaction or seller commission and the amount on which it is calculated.
- Payment-processing or payout-transfer charge.
- Buyer-paid shipping that still affects a fee calculation.
- Your packaging, postage, insurance, and transportation to a drop-off point.
- Optional advertising charges and any refund you may have to fund.
For a $100 shipped item on a new or updated Mercari US listing, the published seller fee alone is $10 because it is 10% of the item price; your net is lower after packing and any other applicable costs. Do not compare that number with Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee without also adding Etsy’s listing, payment-processing, and possible advertising charges. A platform with a higher headline rate can still produce more money if it avoids a large shipping or advertising expense, while a lower rate can be worse when its fixed charges dominate a low-priced sale.
Local pickup versus shipping: a decision framework
Choose local pickup when
- The item is heavy, oversized, fragile, or restricted from national shipping.
- The likely selling price is too low to justify packing materials and a carrier trip.
- You can serve a reasonable radius and are comfortable arranging a safe handoff.
- The buyer needs the item immediately and can inspect it before paying.
Choose shipping when
- The item is compact, durable, and easy to weigh and measure accurately.
- Local demand is narrow but buyers elsewhere are likely to search for the model or niche.
- You can meet the packing deadline and preserve tracking and drop-off evidence.
- The expected price leaves room for postage, platform fees, and a possible return or protection claim.
Listing practices that work on any platform
- Identify the exact item. Include brand, model, size, color, generation, compatibility, and serial or style information where safe.
- Show condition honestly. Use daylight photographs from several angles and close-ups of scratches, wear, repairs, missing parts, and included accessories.
- Set a price from the net backward. Decide the amount you need after fees and costs, then set the public price with room for a reasonable negotiation if the channel is local.
- State logistics clearly. Say pickup area, shipping availability, handling time, package dimensions, or whether the buyer must bring help for a heavy item.
- Remove sold inventory quickly. If you cross-post, keep a single note with the listing URLs, price, and status. Delete or pause the other copies immediately after a sale.
- Keep records. Save the original photographs, description, receipt, tracking number, and agreed price until the transaction is fully closed.
Safety and dispute prevention
For an in-person sale
- Use a public, well-lit location for small items; for a large item, arrange another adult to be present and keep the buyer in the pickup area.
- Do not hand over the item because of an email, text, or screenshot that claims payment. Verify the money in your own account or count cash before releasing it.
- Decline requests for one-time verification codes, overpayment refunds, gift-card payments, or unfamiliar courier arrangements.
- Write down what is included and the final price in the message thread so both sides have the same record.
For a shipped sale
- Measure and weigh the packed parcel, not just the bare item.
- Use a label tied to the correct order and photograph the sealed package before drop-off.
- Keep the carrier receipt and monitor tracking until delivery and the platform’s rating or release step are complete.
- Read the current return and protection terms before accepting a category with a high damage or counterfeit risk.
Which alternative should you use?
Start with Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp for a normal used item that will be collected nearby. Choose between them based on where local buyers actually respond, the privacy and meeting process you prefer, and whether a Craigslist category fee applies. Treat OfferUp as pickup-only under its current September 2026 policy.
Use Mercari for a packable general good when shipping expands the buyer pool enough to justify the 10% seller fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, the three-day handling deadline, and the platform’s package restrictions. Reserve Etsy for qualifying vintage or creative goods, and calculate its listing, transaction, processing, and possible advertising charges before committing to a price.
If you list on more than one service, do it only when you can synchronize inventory and remove duplicate listings immediately after the first completed sale. The best alternative is the one that leaves the highest reliable net proceeds while matching the item’s size, category, buyer location, and the amount of transaction risk you are prepared to manage.
