For typing as well as handwriting, the reMarkable Paper Pro with its Type Folio is the clearest choice supported here. Its keyboard is made for the tablet, and typed and handwritten content can share a page. If Android apps and a color display matter more than a consistently responsive physical keyboard, consider the BOOX Note Air5 C—but TechRadar’s hands-on review reported lag with keyboard input. These are focused recommendations, not a complete ranking of every E Ink tablet: comparable, current keyboard and pricing information is not established for the wider market.

Choose by the work you need the tablet to do

“Typing and note-taking” can mean very different things: writing long passages at a keyboard, jotting handwritten notes during a meeting, marking up PDFs, or switching between all three. The right device depends on which activity is central. A dedicated keyboard and a predictable writing workflow matter more for sustained typing; app choice and color may matter more for work that involves Android tools or color documents.

A stylus-equipped E Ink tablet is also a different purchase from a reading-only e-reader. It adds handwriting and document-markup capabilities, but that added functionality can mean a higher cost and shorter battery life than a basic reading device. Decide whether those capabilities will be part of your regular work rather than assuming an E Ink screen alone makes a tablet a better note-taking tool.

  • Typing is central: Start with the Paper Pro and Type Folio, then check that its keyboard language and focused software environment suit you.
  • You alternate between typing and handwriting: Look closely at how each device moves between input methods and whether both belong in the same document or page.
  • Android apps and color take priority: The Note Air5 C is a candidate, but try its keyboard workflow before relying on it for extended typing.
  • You mainly read: A simpler reading device may be a better fit than paying for tablet-style writing tools you rarely use.

What “typing” should mean in your decision

Short text entry and long-form composition place different demands on an E Ink tablet. Searching a document, naming a file, or adding a sentence to a handwritten page may be perfectly acceptable even when a keyboard feels less immediate than a conventional laptop. Drafting several pages, editing repeatedly, and moving a cursor through dense text expose delays, key-layout issues and software limitations much more quickly.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

Write down the longest session you realistically expect. If it is a few minutes at a time, an occasional Bluetooth keyboard or on-screen keyboard may be sufficient. If the tablet is meant to replace a notebook computer for reports, essays or meeting minutes, keyboard response and the writing application become primary buying criteria. The presence of a keyboard port or accessory does not, by itself, demonstrate that the complete workflow is comfortable for sustained work.

At a glance: the two supported choices

Device and keyboard approach Best fit What the available evidence establishes Main caution
reMarkable Paper Pro with Type Folio Typing and handwriting in a purpose-built workflow The Type Folio connects magnetically, needs no pairing or charging, and supports typed and handwritten content on the same page. Type Folio is exclusive to Paper Pro; keyboard language options and system language differ in the manufacturer’s specifications.
BOOX Note Air5 C Readers who value color, note-taking and Android apps Android Central recommends it in its E Ink tablet guide; TechRadar reports a good pen-writing feel. TechRadar’s reviewer observed lag with the on-screen and optional physical keyboard. No standardized latency comparison is established.

These options are not a universal winner-versus-runner-up ranking. The available comparisons do not establish current keyboard compatibility, performance and prices for every major E Ink tablet. Treat recommendations as workflow guidance, and verify the exact configuration available in your region.

reMarkable Paper Pro with Type Folio: the typing-first pick

The Paper Pro’s strongest case is that its keyboard is designed as part of the tablet rather than treated as an unrelated add-on. The Type Folio attaches through the magnetic accessory port, so it does not need Bluetooth pairing or its own charging routine. It has full-size backlit keys and 1.3 mm of key travel. The manufacturer lists the accessory’s weight at approximately 485 g, a useful consideration if you expect to carry the tablet and keyboard together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The workflow is also suited to people who move between keyboard and pen. reMarkable describes handwritten notes as anchoring to typed text as ideas move and evolve. The layout can be repositioned for typing or handwriting, making the central question less about whether the two input methods are available and more about whether this integrated approach fits the way you organize notes. You can, for example, type a meeting outline, add pen-written arrows or annotations, then return to the keyboard without moving to a separate application or sheet.

That integration is different from simply placing a tablet beside a wireless keyboard. A separate keyboard can be useful, but it leaves you to manage a stand, a Bluetooth connection and the way handwriting is arranged on the screen. The Type Folio’s magnetic attachment and reconfigurable layout are intended to make those transitions part of one document. Whether that is valuable depends on how often you actually switch modes; a user who only types may care more about key feel and software editing tools than about mixed-input layout.

The Paper Pro runs reMarkable OS. Its stated document support includes PDF and EPUB import and PDF, PNG and SVG export; companion apps are available for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. That is a defined set of document and companion-app capabilities, not evidence of the broad third-party app selection available on an Android tablet. If your workflow depends on a particular service or writing app, confirm it supports the documents and handoffs you need. A good test is to import a representative PDF, add both typed and handwritten notes, export it, and open the result on the computer or phone you use every day.

Paper Pro display and hardware specifications

Specification Paper Pro
Display 11.8-inch, 4:3 Canvas Color display based on E Ink Gallery 3
Resolution and density 2160 × 1620 at 229 ppi
Storage and memory 64 GB storage; 2 GB RAM
Other listed hardware Adjustable reading light; USB-C charging
Operating system and documents reMarkable OS; PDF and EPUB import; PDF, PNG and SVG export

The 11.8-inch, 4:3 canvas is the largest current reMarkable option described on the manufacturer’s comparison page. That page lists the Paper Pro Move at 7.3 inches and the Paper Pure at 10.3 inches. Size affects how much of a PDF page or typed outline you can see at once, but a larger panel can also take more room in a bag. Consider the page size of the documents you annotate and whether you usually work at a desk or carry the tablet between meetings.

Check fit and language before buying

The Type Folio is designed exclusively for Paper Pro and does not fit previous-generation reMarkable devices. Its listed keyboard languages are English US and UK, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Nordic SE/DK/NO/FI. The manufacturer lists the Paper Pro system language as English. Check both details against your needs: the keyboard layout and the tablet’s system language are separate considerations.

Do not assume the accessory will work with another reMarkable model just because the devices share a brand or a similar writing workflow. Compatibility is tied to the Paper Pro. If buying a bundle or accessory separately, confirm that the product listing identifies the exact tablet and keyboard configuration you intend to use. Check punctuation, quotation-mark placement, currency symbols and any accented characters you type regularly; a nominally familiar language layout can still feel wrong if the physical arrangement is not the one you use.

BOOX Note Air5 C: favor apps and color, test the keyboard

The Note Air5 C suits a different set of priorities. Android Central recommends it as its best overall E Ink tablet, citing color, note-taking and Android-app flexibility. That is the publication’s buying-guide judgment, not an objective universal ranking. Its appeal is strongest when you want the range of Android apps alongside handwriting and a color-capable E Ink display. Readers who annotate illustrated PDFs or need an Android service that is not part of a focused note-taking operating system have a clear reason to investigate it.

Keyboard responsiveness is the significant qualification for typing-focused buyers. In a hands-on review, TechRadar’s Sharmishta Sarkar reported lag with both the on-screen keyboard and an optional physical keyboard. She found a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard somewhat less laggy than BOOX’s own folio. This is qualitative review experience, not a standardized latency or typing-speed test, so it does not establish how every user, app or setup will perform. It does make trying your intended configuration especially important if you plan to type for extended periods.

The same review reported a good feel when writing with the pen. That can make the device attractive to people whose main work is handwritten and who use typing only occasionally. If typing is your primary task, assess keyboard response in the apps you expect to use rather than inferring performance from Android support or from the presence of a physical keyboard. Try cursor movement, backspacing, selecting text and switching between fields, not just entering a short title.

A Bluetooth keyboard may also change the practical setup. You may need to carry it separately, position the tablet at a comfortable angle and manage its own connection or power routine. Those are not necessarily deal-breakers, especially for a desk-based workflow, but they reduce the simplicity that makes a purpose-built folio attractive. Confirm the exact keyboard model and its return policy rather than assuming every Bluetooth accessory behaves identically.

Typed notes, handwritten notes and PDFs

Mixed-input work is where the distinction between these devices matters most. On Paper Pro, the Type Folio is explicitly designed for typed and handwritten content on the same page, with handwriting anchored to typed text and a layout that can be repositioned for either mode. That is useful for an outline in which a typed paragraph is followed by a handwritten diagram, or for a PDF review where typed comments and pen marks need to stay together.

Before committing, define what “together” means for you. Do you need handwriting to remain beside a specific sentence when the text moves? Do you need to export a clean PDF for someone else? Do you expect to continue editing the typed portion on a desktop? The Paper Pro’s listed import and export formats and companion apps provide a stated path, but you should still test a real document. A feature that looks ideal for free-form notes may not match a workflow built around tracked edits, cloud services or specialized Android applications.

Color can be practical for charts, highlighted passages and illustrated documents, but it does not guarantee better document handling. Conversely, a focused monochrome-oriented writing environment may be preferable when distractions and app switching are the main problem. Judge color and software as separate criteria from keyboard response.

How to assess a keyboard workflow before choosing

A keyboard that connects is not necessarily a keyboard that suits sustained work. Use these checks to distinguish a convenient occasional input method from a reliable writing setup.

  1. Identify your typing load. Decide whether you will type a few search terms and short notes or draft extended documents. A lag that is tolerable for occasional input may interrupt longer writing.
  2. Try the exact keyboard and tablet combination. For a detachable or Bluetooth keyboard, test the model you intend to use, not merely an on-screen keyboard or a different accessory. Pay attention to response in the app you plan to write in. On the Note Air5 C, compare the BOOX folio with the Logitech Bluetooth option if both are available to you.
  3. Check layout and language. Confirm the physical key layout matches your preferred language and punctuation habits. For the Type Folio, check the manufacturer’s listed language layouts and remember that the Paper Pro system language is listed separately as English.
  4. Test pen-to-keyboard transitions. Write a passage, add handwriting, reposition the page or content if supported, and return to typing. Check whether the result remains organized in the way you need.
  5. Verify your app and document path. Confirm that your writing app, file formats, import/export needs and companion devices fit the tablet’s software. A device’s ability to type does not guarantee the handoff or editing workflow you expect.
  6. Assess the screen for your documents. If you read or mark up color material, color may be a useful factor; if you mainly type monochrome text, keyboard response and layout may matter more. Do not use color support as a proxy for typing quality.
  7. Check practical ownership details. Before ordering, confirm current local price, bundle contents, availability, return terms and exact accessory compatibility. These details vary over time and by region.

Scenario guide: which trade-off fits?

Long-form drafting

Choose the Paper Pro and Type Folio as the starting point when the tablet is intended for regular keyboard sessions. The dedicated connection, full-size backlit keys and same-page mixed-input design address the main friction points of a notebook-style workflow. Still confirm that reMarkable OS and its document formats are sufficient for your final editing and sharing needs.

Meeting notes and lectures

If you alternate between typing a speaker’s words and drawing diagrams, the Paper Pro’s anchored handwriting workflow is directly relevant. If you mostly write by hand and only occasionally enter a title or a few action items, the Note Air5 C’s reported pen feel and Android flexibility may be more important than keyboard speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color PDFs and Android services

The Note Air5 C is the more natural candidate when color and access to Android apps drive the purchase. Android Central’s recommendation reflects that combination. Treat TechRadar’s keyboard-lag observation as a reason to test before buying, particularly if your color-document workflow also includes substantial typing.

Reading with occasional annotation

Both tablet-style options may exceed what you need if reading is the primary activity. A reading-only e-reader can avoid the extra cost and potentially shorter battery life associated with stylus and tablet functions. If you do choose a writing tablet, verify that its PDF and EPUB handling supports the books and papers you actually read.

Ergonomics, portability and daily setup

The Type Folio’s approximately 485 g listed weight belongs to the accessory, not a combined tablet-and-keyboard figure. Include the tablet, stylus and charging cable when judging the bag you carry. A larger 11.8-inch screen can make a full page easier to view, while a smaller device may be less intrusive in a meeting. Neither size nor accessory weight predicts typing quality, so treat portability as a separate decision axis.

Backlit keys can help in dim rooms, and the Paper Pro has an adjustable reading light listed among its hardware features. Those details may matter for evening work, but they do not replace checking glare, viewing comfort and the physical angle created by the folio. For a Bluetooth setup, plan where the keyboard and tablet will sit together; a connection that works on a desk may be awkward on a lap or in a crowded meeting room.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

The available evidence supports a clear distinction: Paper Pro with Type Folio has the more purpose-built typing-and-handwriting integration, while the Note Air5 C is an app-rich, color-capable option with a reported keyboard-responsiveness concern. It does not support a complete market ranking, a reliable cross-device latency comparison, or a current universal price comparison. No standardized typing benchmark is established for either option here.

Other devices may suit a particular buyer, but a fair recommendation would require current, comparable details about their keyboard compatibility, language layouts, typing behavior and software workflow. Search phrasing that mentions other tablets is not enough to establish those details. Rather than treating this short list as exhaustive, compare any alternative using the same checks: keyboard fit, response, typed-and-handwritten integration, app needs, screen characteristics and regional cost.

Prices, bundles and availability

No current, comparable price is established for these devices and accessories. Prices and bundles can vary by region and change over time, so check the manufacturer or retailer serving your location shortly before purchase. Compare the tablet-only price with the configuration that actually includes the keyboard you need, and verify whether a stylus or other accessory is included rather than assuming it comes in the box.

For a keyboard you intend to use daily, return terms matter: they give you a way to assess the real typing experience if a store demonstration is unavailable. For a Bluetooth setup, confirm that the specific keyboard you choose is compatible with your tablet and that the connection behavior works in your intended writing app. Keep screenshots or order details showing the exact model, language layout and included accessories in case a listing changes.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by screen color alone: Color helps with some documents, but it says nothing about keyboard latency or the quality of a typed workflow.
  • Assuming all reMarkable folios fit: Type Folio is Paper Pro-only and does not fit previous-generation reMarkable tablets.
  • Confusing system language with keyboard layout: The listed Type Folio languages and the Paper Pro’s listed English system language are separate specifications.
  • Using a short demo as a typing test: Entering a title may hide lag that appears during cursor movement, editing and longer passages.
  • Ignoring export requirements: Confirm that your PDFs, EPUB files and exported PDF, PNG or SVG documents can move through the devices and companion apps you use.
  • Treating a publication’s recommendation as a benchmark: Android Central’s pick and TechRadar’s hands-on observations are useful judgments, not standardized head-to-head measurements.
  • Comparing tablet-only prices: Include the keyboard, stylus and any required accessories in the configuration you will actually use.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Paper Pro with Type Folio if typing and handwriting both belong in a focused note-taking workflow and you want a keyboard designed specifically for the tablet. Its 11.8-inch color display, 64 GB storage, adjustable reading light, magnetic no-pairing connection and same-page input design make it the clearest typing-first option in this comparison.
  • Consider the Note Air5 C if Android apps, color and pen-based notes outweigh the risk of a less responsive keyboard workflow. Android Central’s guide favors it for that combination, while TechRadar’s reviewer found the pen pleasant but keyboard input laggy. Try physical keyboard input before making it your main writing device.
  • Keep looking beyond these two if neither matches your language, app, budget or device requirements. This comparison does not establish a complete set of current E Ink tablet options, so apply the keyboard and workflow checks to any alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the reMarkable Type Folio included with Paper Pro?

Check the exact retailer or manufacturer configuration. Compare the tablet-only listing with a bundle that explicitly names Type Folio, and verify whether a stylus is included. Do not assume an accessory is in the box because the tablet supports it.

Can Type Folio fit an older reMarkable tablet?

No. The accessory is designed exclusively for reMarkable Paper Pro and is not compatible with previous-generation reMarkable devices.

Which keyboard languages does Type Folio support?

The listed layouts are English US and UK, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Nordic SE, DK, NO and FI. The Paper Pro system language is listed separately as English, so check both specifications.

Is Paper Pro better than BOOX Note Air5 C for long typing sessions?

Paper Pro with Type Folio is the clearer purpose-built typing choice in this comparison because the keyboard connects magnetically without pairing or charging and typed and handwritten content can share a page. TechRadar reported keyboard lag on the Note Air5 C, so test it carefully if sustained typing is your priority.

Why choose the BOOX Note Air5 C instead?

Choose it when Android apps, a color-capable E Ink display and handwriting flexibility matter more than a consistently responsive keyboard. Android Central recommends it in its buying guide, while TechRadar reported good pen feel but lag with the on-screen and optional physical keyboard.

Can I use a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard with Note Air5 C?

TechRadar’s reviewer found a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard somewhat less laggy than BOOX’s own folio in her testing. That is qualitative experience rather than a standardized result. Confirm compatibility and test the exact keyboard and writing app you plan to use.

Are these tablets suitable for PDF note-taking?

Both are aimed at writing and document work, but evaluate the complete path: import a representative PDF, add typed and handwritten notes, export it and open the result on your computer or phone. Paper Pro lists PDF and EPUB import and PDF, PNG and SVG export with companion apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.

Do I need an E Ink tablet if I mostly read?

Not necessarily. A reading-only e-reader may cost less and offer longer battery life than a stylus-equipped tablet. Choose a writing tablet when handwriting, markup or app flexibility will be regular parts of your use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Pick the reMarkable Paper Pro with Type Folio for the most coherent typing-and-handwriting workflow. Pick the BOOX Note Air5 C when Android apps and color are more important, but treat keyboard responsiveness as a hands-on test rather than an assumption. In either case, verify language layout, app and document support, bundle contents, returns and your local price before ordering.
