DJI’s Mini 5 Pro is the strongest specification-led pick under the 250-gram category boundary, provided your exact battery and accessories keep the aircraft within the limit. DJI lists a 249 g aircraft with a 1-inch, 50 MP camera, up to 4K/60 HDR video, 4K/120 slow motion, nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing, 42 GB of internal storage and up to 36 minutes with its standard battery. The DJI Mini 4 Pro remains the sensible alternative if its lower-generation camera specification and available bundle meet your needs.
Those are manufacturer specifications, not results from independent flight, image-quality or wind testing. Current US prices, street availability and a defensible multi-brand ranking were not established, so check the exact retailer bundle and local rules before ordering.
What is the best drone under 250 grams?
For a compact camera drone whose advertised configuration is aimed at the sub-250 g category, the DJI Mini 5 Pro is the leading choice in this guide. DJI lists it at 249 g and equips it with a 1-inch 50 MP camera, a fast f/1.8 aperture, high-frame-rate video modes and nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing. That combination gives it the most capable specification sheet among the two models that can be compared with the available evidence.

Why the DJI Mini 5 Pro leads on specifications
One-inch, 50 MP camera
DJI lists a 1-inch sensor, f/1.8 aperture and a maximum resolution of 50 MP. Sensor size and aperture are useful buying signals for people who shoot in changing light or want more flexibility when cropping, but the specification alone does not prove a particular image-quality advantage in every scene. No independent image comparison was established for this guide.
HDR and slow motion
The Mini 5 Pro is listed for up to 4K/60 fps HDR and up to 4K/120 fps slow motion. The higher frame-rate mode can be useful when you intentionally want to slow footage during editing. It is not the same as a guarantee that every mode records with identical exposure, dynamic range, bitrate or field of view.
Nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing
DJI describes nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing that combines a forward-facing LiDAR unit with vision sensors. The phrase describes the aircraft’s sensing system, not an assurance that it can detect every wire, branch, glass surface or moving object. Keep a safe visual operating environment and do not treat automated sensing as a substitute for the pilot’s attention.

Storage and transmission
DJI lists 42 GB of internal storage and a maximum video-transmission distance of 20 km under its stated conditions. A maximum transmission figure is a laboratory or ideal-condition ceiling from the manufacturer’s specification, not a distance you should expect in a populated area or use as a reason to fly beyond legal visual-line-of-sight requirements.
Battery choices
DJI advertises up to 36 minutes with the standard Intelligent Flight Battery. Its Intelligent Flight Battery Plus is advertised for up to 52 minutes. Both numbers are stated maxima, not typical flight times. Wind, temperature, maneuvering, reserve settings, payload and the need to land with a safe battery margin all affect the time available for a flight.
What the DJI Mini 4 Pro still does well on paper
Sub-249-gram positioning
DJI describes the Mini 4 Pro as under 249 g. That makes it a natural comparison for buyers who are specifically trying to remain in a sub-250 g category, but the same configuration warning applies: check the aircraft with the exact battery and every accessory you intend to use.
Camera and video modes
DJI’s comparison information lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 48 MP maximum pixels, up to 4K/60 HDR and up to 4K/100 slow motion. Those numbers remain suitable for many compact-drone uses, while the Mini 5 Pro’s listed 1-inch sensor and 50 MP maximum are the more ambitious specification.
Omnidirectional sensing and storage
The Mini 4 Pro is described as having omnidirectional obstacle sensing and 2 GB of internal storage. The storage difference is substantial on the specification sheet: the Mini 5 Pro lists 42 GB. You should still plan a compatible memory-card workflow for longer shoots rather than assuming internal capacity removes the need for removable storage.

DJI Mini 5 Pro vs Mini 4 Pro: which should I buy?
Buy the Mini 5 Pro for the camera and storage specification
The Mini 5 Pro is the better fit when your priorities are the largest listed sensor, 50 MP stills, 4K/120 slow motion, more built-in storage or DJI’s nightscape sensing description. It is also the model for which DJI publishes the clearest standard and Plus battery claims in the available specifications.
Buy the Mini 4 Pro when the older camera specification is enough
The Mini 4 Pro can make more sense when its available package meets your requirements and the price difference is meaningful. Its listed 1/1.3-inch sensor, 48 MP stills, 4K/60 HDR, 4K/100 slow motion and omnidirectional sensing cover the core feature set many compact-drone buyers seek. Because current US pricing was not established, compare the actual checkout price and included accessories rather than assuming a fixed generational discount.
Do not decide on weight from the name alone
Neither model name guarantees that every package remains below 250 g. The relevant figure is the aircraft’s takeoff weight in the configuration you will fly. A different battery or fitted accessory can change that figure. Weigh or verify the complete configuration when the category boundary matters to your registration decision.
How long can a drone under 250 grams fly?
For the Mini 5 Pro, DJI states up to 36 minutes with the standard Intelligent Flight Battery and up to 52 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. These are maximum manufacturer claims. They should not be converted into a promise that a real flight will last that long, because the aircraft must land with a reserve and conditions vary.

What changes usable flight time
- Wind and the amount of power required to hold position or travel against it.
- Cold or hot conditions that affect battery behavior.
- Repeated acceleration, high-speed flight and frequent climbs.
- Payload and accessories attached to the aircraft.
- Battery age, charge state and the reserve level you set before launch.
- The need to return and land safely rather than use the final percentage of charge.
Why the Plus battery needs a weight check
The Plus battery’s 52-minute claim is useful only if the resulting configuration is legal and suitable for your operation. DJI’s 249 g listing for the Mini 5 Pro must not be treated as proof that the Plus battery, guards or other accessories preserve the sub-250 g category. Confirm the complete takeoff weight and the rules in the country where you fly.
Do I need to register a drone under 250 grams?
In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration says a drone weighing 0.55 pounds or less, which is less than 250 grams, is exempt from registration only when it is flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. That is a narrow recreational exception, not a general exemption for every pilot or purpose.
The exception does not remove airspace restrictions, safe-operation duties, or other FAA requirements. A sub-250 g aircraft used for business, public safety or another operation may fall under different registration rules. Check the current FAA registration guidance for your operation, aircraft and location before flying; the cited guidance page was last updated March 18, 2024 and regulations can change.
Weight is measured for the operation, not just the bare airframe
Use the actual takeoff configuration when assessing the threshold. Battery choice and fitted accessories matter. If the aircraft exceeds the applicable limit, do not rely on a product-page headline that describes a lighter configuration.
Does a drone under 250 grams need Remote ID?
Registration and Remote ID are related but separate questions. FAA guidance says drones that are required to be registered or are registered—including drones flown for recreation, business or public safety—must comply with Remote ID. Therefore, under-250 g status does not automatically answer the Remote ID question; first determine whether the aircraft must be registered or has been registered for your operation.

The FAA’s declaration database includes the DJI Mini 4 Pro among Remote ID declarations. That database entry supports a capability and listing context, not a blanket conclusion that every Mini 4 Pro pilot must register or that every flight is covered by the same rule. Follow the FAA registration and Remote ID guidance that applies to your specific use.
Accessories worth considering for the Mini 5 Pro
Standard Intelligent Flight Battery
DJI rates the standard battery for up to 36 minutes. It is the straightforward choice when maintaining the lightest listed configuration is important, but verify the complete takeoff weight with any other fitted equipment.
Intelligent Flight Battery Plus
DJI rates the Plus battery for up to 52 minutes. Treat the longer claim as a maximum and check whether the resulting aircraft weight changes its regulatory category or operating requirements where you fly.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Mini 5 Pro Two-Way Charging Hub
DJI describes the Two-Way Charging Hub as able to charge batteries and transfer remaining power to one battery. Confirm that the hub is the Mini 5 Pro version and that the package you select includes the cable and power equipment you need. The hub is a charging accessory, not additional flight time by itself; the number of charged batteries determines how many flights you can prepare.
What to check before ordering
- Select the exact aircraft package. Confirm whether the listing is for the Mini 5 Pro or Mini 4 Pro and identify the controller, battery count, charger and other included items.
- Check the regional storefront. Prices, bundles and availability vary by region. A price shown on a non-US page is not a US price.
- Decide which battery you will actually fly. Record the standard or Plus battery and any guards, lights or other accessories that will be attached.
- Verify takeoff weight. Use the complete configuration, not the bare aircraft or the lightest advertised package.
- Check the rules for your operation. In the US, determine whether the recreational exception applies; otherwise review registration and Remote ID requirements.
- Plan storage. The Mini 5 Pro lists 42 GB internal storage and the Mini 4 Pro lists 2 GB, but longer or higher-frame-rate recording still requires a practical file-management plan.
- Set realistic flight-time expectations. Use DJI’s up-to figures as ceilings and reserve battery for returning and landing safely.
Pre-flight checks for a lightweight camera drone
- Confirm the aircraft, battery and accessories match the configuration whose weight and rules you checked.
- Inspect propellers, motors, battery seating and the camera cover before powering up.
- Check the controller and aircraft battery levels, storage space and recording settings.
- Review the intended area for people, structures, trees, wires and other hazards that sensors may not detect reliably.
- Confirm that your planned flight stays within the legal operating area and any required visual-line-of-sight or altitude limits.
- Allow a conservative battery reserve for the return and landing instead of targeting the published maximum.
Limits of this comparison
This is a specification-led buying guide, not a hands-on ranking. The available evidence does not establish independent flight tests, image-quality measurements, wind-performance tests, reliability results, current US street-price comparisons or a robust shortlist of non-DJI competitors. Manufacturer specifications are useful for narrowing a purchase, but they cannot settle questions such as how a drone feels in gusts, how its footage looks in difficult light or how a particular retailer’s bundle performs in practice.
Recheck the Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro product pages, exact battery weights, package contents, current US prices and FAA guidance immediately before purchase. The right choice is the model and configuration that meets your camera needs while remaining legal for the way and place you intend to fly.
