GOG is the clearest choice if you want a store-wide DRM-free policy and standalone installers you can keep for later. itch.io is an excellent second source for indie and creator-distributed games, but DRM-free status is decided by each creator rather than guaranteed across the store. Whichever store you use, download the files, patches and extras you are entitled to keep; a library entry alone is not the same as a local archive.
What “DRM-free” means for a PC game
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical restriction that can require a launcher, account check, activation server or other authorization before a game starts. A DRM-free release removes that copy-protection layer from the game files. In practical terms, you can normally install the files you downloaded and launch the supported offline portions without a recurring check with the store.
DRM-free does not mean that every feature works without a network. A game can be DRM-free while its multiplayer servers, cloud saves, leaderboards, matchmaking, anti-cheat service or other external features remain online-only. It also does not remove ordinary requirements such as a compatible operating system, graphics drivers, runtime libraries or a publisher account used by an online mode.

A purchase normally gives you a license or library entitlement under the store’s terms. Saving the installer or game archive gives you practical control over reinstalling that licensed copy if a client, server or storefront changes later. The key distinction is between a platform-wide promise and a title-by-title check. GOG’s policy gives you a default expectation across its catalog. itch.io gives creators more control, so the download page for each game is the authority.
GOG: the strongest store-wide option
Published DRM-free requirement
GOG’s developer policy says games released on the platform cannot contain DRM or copy protection. The same policy separates offline-capable single-player features from services that inherently need a connection. If a function depends on a server—such as online multiplayer—it cannot become offline merely because the executable is DRM-free.
GOG described the preservation rationale in its company statement “GOG 2022 update #2: our commitment to DRM-free gaming”: “Making sure you can play games purchased on GOG offline, make backup copies, and install them as many times as you need is even more relevant now, as things like game preservation become an important topic for the whole industry.” This is a statement of GOG’s policy and intent, not a promise that every external service will remain available forever.
Offline backup installers
GOG support provides offline backup installers from your account. These are the files to save when your goal is a future reinstall without the Galaxy client or a live connection. Galaxy is optional for supported games; it can manage updates and convenience features, but the standalone installer is the durable part of the purchase.

How to make a GOG purchase reinstallable
- Open the exact game’s store listing and read the supported operating systems and edition details.
- Check whether the content you need—language packs, patches, DLC, manuals or other extras—is included in the listed downloads.
- After purchase, open your account’s game library and choose the offline backup installer option rather than relying only on a Galaxy-managed installation.
- Download every installer and optional component you are entitled to keep. Store the files in a folder named with the game, edition and version.
- Copy the folder to a second location, such as an external hard drive or another computer, before deleting the original download.
- Test the installer on the operating system you intend to use. Launch the single-player game with the computer disconnected from the internet so you know which functions are genuinely offline.
Limits to the guarantee
“DRM-free” does not guarantee a modern operating system will run an older title, that a discontinued multiplayer server will return, or that a third-party service used by an online mode will accept new accounts. It also does not tell you which languages, patches or bonus files are in a particular installer. Those details belong to the individual listing and its downloadable components.
itch.io: flexible, creator-controlled downloads
What itch.io promises
itch.io says it does not alter files uploaded by creators and does not apply DRM to those files. Purchases provide a download page for the project’s files. This direct-delivery model is useful when you want an archive outside a large client ecosystem.
The qualification matters: itch.io’s creator guidance encourages DRM-free builds but does not require them. A creator can upload a build that uses a launcher, an account check or another restriction. Treat the store-level statement as a description of itch.io’s delivery system, not as proof that every individual game is independently launchable.

Files can change after purchase
Your purchase page can reflect updated or changed project files. Creators control a project’s visibility and access, so future availability is not the same as a permanent public archive. Download the version you are entitled to use and retain it locally if long-term reinstallability matters.

How to archive an itch.io game
- On the project page, identify the exact downloads for your operating system. Note whether the file is an installer, a compressed archive or a launcher package.
- Read the creator’s instructions for starting the game, required runtimes, account sign-in and online features.
- Buy the game and open the purchase download page. Save the main game files, patches, manuals, soundtracks and other included extras that you want to preserve.
- Record the download date and version in a text file beside the game. Keep the creator’s readme because it may contain launch parameters or compatibility notes.
- Copy the archive to a second storage location. Do not assume that the itch.io app’s remembered account state is equivalent to possessing a standalone, DRM-free build.
- Run the game once with the network disabled. If it fails, follow the creator’s documented startup procedure and note the dependency in your archive.
Using the itch.io app offline
The itch.io app can operate with a remembered account while offline, which may help launch games already installed through the app. That behavior does not prove that every game build is DRM-free or that it will launch independently of the app. For preservation, keep the actual project files and instructions rather than relying only on the client.
How to evaluate a game before buying
Use this checklist on the exact edition you plan to purchase. Store policies establish expectations; the listing determines what you will actually reinstall.
- Operating system: Confirm the listed Windows, macOS or Linux version and whether 32-bit or 64-bit support is specified. An offline installer cannot overcome an incompatible operating system.
- File format: Identify whether you receive a standalone installer, a compressed archive, a launcher package or several split downloads.
- Offline behavior: Look for explicit notes about launching without the store client, account authentication or an internet connection.
- Online dependencies: Separate single-player from multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud saves, matchmaking, anti-cheat and other server features.
- Edition and patch: Check the version number, last update information and whether the download includes the patch level you need.
- DLC and language: Verify that expansions, language files, subtitles, manuals and bonus content are included in the downloads you can access.
- Third-party services: Note any publisher account, external launcher or activation step, especially if it is required before the first run.
- Creator or publisher access: For creator-controlled stores, determine whether files are likely to be replaced, hidden or removed and plan to keep your own copy.
Build a durable local game archive
Use a clear folder structure
Create one top-level folder per game and include the edition, platform and version in the name. Keep installers, patches, DLC and extras in separate subfolders. Add a plain-text note with the purchase account, download date, required operating system, install order and any launch instructions. Do not store passwords or recovery codes in that note.
Keep more than one copy
An external hard drive is a practical option for large installer collections, but it is not mandatory and no single capacity fits every library. A portable SSD is another compact storage category; the available material does not establish that its speed is necessary for archival use. Writable optical discs can suit a narrow archival workflow, but they are not a general requirement. Whatever medium you choose, maintain at least two copies in different physical locations if losing the library would be costly.

Preserve the surrounding files
Save patches, language packs, manuals, configuration examples and bonus content alongside the main installer. A base game that launches is not necessarily the edition you bought if an expansion or required patch is missing. Keep the creator’s readme and the store’s edition information as a record of what each file contains.
Verify your archive
After downloading, compare the file sizes shown by the store with the files on disk and open each archive to confirm it is not corrupt. For important collections, generate a SHA-256 checksum and store it in your notes; a later checksum comparison can reveal accidental changes or storage damage. This verifies file integrity, not the legal status of the license.
Test before you need the backup
Install one archived copy on a spare or freshly prepared system. Disconnect the network and try the single-player launch. Record any runtime, graphics-driver or compatibility adjustment that was necessary. A tested archive is more useful than an untested folder discovered years later.
Reinstalling from your saved files
GOG workflow
- Locate the offline installer and any required patch or DLC files in your archive.
- Install the base game while connected or disconnected according to the game’s documented requirements; the installer itself should not require Galaxy authentication for supported offline use.
- Apply patches and expansions in the order documented by the release notes.
- Start the single-player game offline and confirm that saves, languages and controller settings behave as expected.
- Reconnect only if you need an online mode, a cloud feature or an update that is not present in your archive.
itch.io workflow
- Read the saved project instructions before running the executable. They may specify an extraction folder, runtime or launch command.
- Extract the archive or run the installer into a dedicated game folder; avoid mixing files from different versions.
- Apply the archived patch only when its version matches the base files.
- Test the game offline. If it asks for an account or launcher, treat that dependency as part of the preserved setup rather than assuming the files are standalone.
- Keep a copy of the working configuration beside the game so the next reinstall follows the same steps.
Common problems and practical fixes
The store client is unavailable
If you saved a standalone installer, install from that file instead of trying to recreate the library through a client. If you saved only a client-managed installation, look for the store’s official offline-download feature while account access still works and add those files to your archive.

The download page shows a newer or different build
Keep the version that you tested and record its date. Download the newer build separately rather than overwriting the known-good archive. This is especially important for creator-controlled projects whose files can change over time.
The game launches but a feature is missing
Check whether the missing function is an online service, DLC, language pack or optional extra. DRM-free status concerns copy protection; it does not bundle content that was not included in your edition or restore a server that has been retired.
The installer runs but the game will not start
Compare the archive’s operating-system requirement with the computer you are using, then read the saved instructions for runtimes, graphics settings and launch parameters. Test the original version before applying unofficial modifications, so you know whether the problem is compatibility or a changed file.
You can no longer access an itch.io project
Use the local files you saved with the purchase. If you did not keep them, account recovery or creator support may be the only routes available, and neither guarantees that a previous build will still be downloadable.
GOG is the better starting point when your priority is a store-wide DRM-free rule, optional client use and official offline backup installers. It reduces the number of title-by-title DRM checks, while still requiring you to inspect online features, system support and included content. itch.io is attractive for indie, experimental and direct-from-creator releases. Its purchase pages make the project files available, but the creator decides what is uploaded and how it runs. Buy with a per-game checklist and archive the files immediately. If a game is available elsewhere, do not infer a store-wide DRM policy from one DRM-free release. Confirm the exact edition’s offline launch instructions, installer access, account requirements and backup rights before paying. For most buyers, GOG offers the clearest path from purchase to a reusable offline installer. itch.io complements it with a broad creator-upload model, provided you verify each game and keep your own copy. The durable habit is the same in both cases: treat the store library as access to downloads, then build and test a local archive before you need it.
