Thief is the best default vocation for solo-minded play with a compact Pawn party. Its rapid dagger attacks, mobility, opening exploitation, and heavy damage let the Arisen remain the party’s active problem-solver. It is not an objectively superior choice in every encounter or build: choose Fighter if you value shield defense, Mage if you want to keep the party healthy and enhanced, Archer for reliable distance, or Sorcerer for powerful magick when you can secure casting space.

The short answer: choose Thief first

Dragon’s Dogma 2 lets you travel with the Arisen and up to three Pawn companions. For a player who wants a small party but still expects the main character to handle much of the fighting, Thief is the most practical starting point. PlayStation describes the vocation as fast and mobile, with rapid dagger attacks, movement away after striking, the ability to exploit openings, and heavy damage.

That combination matters for a compact party because it gives the Arisen an active role instead of making the party’s success depend on several specialized companions. You can move toward an opening, deal damage, and reposition while Pawns provide the additional roles your current encounter requires. This is a role-fit recommendation, not a measured tier ranking: the official descriptions do not establish one vocation as the highest-damage or safest option in every fight, difficulty, build, or patch.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 does not lock you into this decision. Capcom’s manual says vocations can be changed at a Vocation Guild. You can therefore treat Thief as a starting hypothesis, play enough encounters to identify what feels missing, and switch to a defensive, support, ranged, or magick role without restarting your character.

Why Thief fits a solo-oriented Arisen

It keeps the Arisen responsible for direct damage

A “solo” setup in this game still permits Pawns; it usually means the player wants the Arisen to remain the primary decision-maker and damage contributor rather than standing back while companions do everything. Thief’s described rapid strikes and heavy damage support that preference. You are close enough to act on openings yourself, and the vocation’s mobility supports moving away after an attack instead of remaining committed to one position.

Mobility reduces dependence on a full defensive formation

With only a few companions, there is less redundancy if one Pawn is occupied, separated, or unable to answer a threat. Thief’s movement gives the Arisen another way to manage danger: approach, exploit an opening, and relocate. This does not make the vocation invulnerable, and the official description does not provide a damage or survival guarantee. It simply makes mobility part of your own defensive plan rather than relying entirely on a shield user to absorb pressure.

It leaves Pawn slots available for coverage

Because Thief supplies close-range offense, the Pawns can be selected for functions the Arisen does not provide. A Mage can cover healing and weapon enchantments; a Fighter can offer shield-based frontline defense; an Archer or Sorcerer can add distance or magick damage. The result is a compact party with deliberately different jobs rather than several characters competing for the same role.

How the main alternatives compare

The right comparison is not “which vocation wins a universal ranking?” It is “what should the Arisen personally contribute, and what should the Pawns cover?” The official descriptions support three useful decision axes: personal defense versus mobility, direct close-range damage versus ranged or magick offense, and self-focused damage versus party support.

Vocation Officially described role Best fit for a small Pawn party Practical trade-off
Thief Rapid dagger strikes, high mobility, opening exploitation, and heavy damage. The strongest default for an Arisen who wants to move actively and supply direct damage. Requires you to manage close-range positioning rather than relying on a shield-first approach.
Fighter Sword-and-shield close combat, guarding, timed blocks, and protection of companions. A strong alternative when personal defense and frontline control matter more than maximum mobility. Your contribution is built around defense and guarded engagement instead of the Thief’s hit-and-move style.
Mage Magick attacks, weapon enchantments, and healing; stronger spells take longer to cast. Useful when you want the Arisen to enable the Pawns and stabilize the party. Longer casting times for stronger spells make a safe casting position important.
Archer Bow-based long-range attacks and targeting elevated enemies. A choice for players who want the Arisen to contribute from distance or reach elevated targets. It shifts your personal role away from the Thief’s close-range pressure.
Sorcerer Powerful magick attacks that require time and a safe casting position. A ranged magick-damage option when the party can protect the caster. Cast time and positioning are central constraints, particularly when enemies can interrupt your setup.

“Trade-off” here describes how each official role changes your responsibilities; it is not a claim that one vocation has a fixed numerical advantage. Balance can change with updates, and the cited official material does not provide a current damage chart or universal tier list.

When Fighter is better than Thief

Choose Fighter when you want the Arisen to be the party’s dependable close-combat anchor. Capcom describes Fighters as guarding, deflecting attacks with timed blocks, and balancing offense with defending companions. That makes Fighter the clearest alternative for a player whose first question is, “How do I protect the group?” rather than, “How quickly can I exploit an opening?”

A Fighter-led party can make sense when you prefer to remain near companions and draw your value from controlled, shield-based engagements. A Mage can then provide healing and weapon enchantments, while an Archer or Sorcerer supplies damage that does not depend on the same immediate space. This is a complementary arrangement inferred from the roles, not an official formation or tested best composition.

Fighter is also a good answer if you find Thief’s mobile, close-range approach too demanding. The choice is about the kind of risk you personally want to manage. Thief asks you to use movement and openings; Fighter asks you to manage guarding, timing, and the safety of companions.

When Mage is the right Arisen vocation

Mage is the support-centered option. PlayStation describes magick attacks, weapon enchantments, and healing, with stronger spells taking longer to cast. Select it when your preferred solo experience is not “I do all the damage,” but “I make the whole small party function.”

Playing Mage changes party-building priorities. You may not need to hire another support-focused Pawn for the same purpose, so the remaining slots can emphasize frontline defense and damage. A Fighter can provide the shield presence you lack, while an Archer or another damage vocation gives the party a way to pressure enemies while you heal, enchant weapons, or prepare magick attacks.

The cost is tempo and safety during casting. Because advanced spells take longer, you need to recognize when a safe casting position exists and when immediate movement is more valuable. The official description does not specify cast durations, interruption rules, or a guaranteed healing amount, so avoid treating Mage as an automatic solution to every party problem.

When Archer or Sorcerer makes more sense

Archer: physical range and elevated targets

Archer is the straightforward choice if you want to contribute without standing in the middle of every melee. PlayStation describes bow-based long-range attacks and targeting elevated enemies. That role can complement a Fighter or Thief Pawn that occupies close-range space, or it can let the Arisen remain at a distance while Pawns engage.

Archer is especially attractive when reaching an elevated enemy is a recurring concern for your play style. The source establishes the targeting role, not a universal advantage against every enemy, so judge it by whether you enjoy maintaining distance and choosing targets from outside the scrum.

Sorcerer: powerful magick with a setup requirement

Sorcerer suits a player who wants the Arisen’s identity to be high-impact magick damage. The trade-off is explicit: powerful attacks require time and a safe casting position. In a small party, that requirement makes Pawn behavior and frontline coverage more important. If your companions cannot keep pressure away from you, the theoretical power of a spell does not remove the practical problem of finding time to cast it.

Sorcerer is therefore a deliberate choice rather than the safest default for an unknown player. It rewards someone who enjoys reading the battlefield, waiting for a casting window, and letting companions create that window.

A compact Pawn party that covers the essentials

For a Thief Arisen, a balanced three-Pawn setup can cover three needs: support, frontline defense, and a distant damage source. The suggested pattern is a Mage, a Fighter, and either an Archer or a Sorcerer. It is an editorial combination of the official role descriptions; neither PlayStation nor Capcom declares it the best party.

Dragons Dogma 2 - PS5
  • The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.
  • Mage: supplies healing, weapon enchantments, and magick attacks. This reduces the chance that every party member must solve problems through close-range weapon damage.
  • Fighter: adds a shield-based frontline presence and a companion whose described role includes protecting others.
  • Archer: contributes bow-based long-range attacks and can target elevated enemies.
  • Alternative to Archer — Sorcerer: adds powerful magick attacks if you are willing to build the party around protecting a caster and creating safe casting time.

You do not have to fill all three slots if you prefer a smaller group. The game supports up to three additional Pawns, and PlayStation describes two additional Pawns as hireable. A two-Pawn party can be easier to keep together, but it also leaves fewer separate functions covered. Decide whether you value simplicity or redundancy before hiring.

Use Pawn commands to make the formation work

Vocation alone does not determine how a Pawn contributes. Capcom’s manual describes three relevant commands, and each changes the way a compact party behaves.

Command What Capcom says it prioritizes When to use it
Help Support, healing, and recovery. Use when the party needs a Pawn to emphasize assistance rather than simply pursue independent combat.
To me Directs Pawns to fight by the Arisen’s side. Use when staying together matters, especially while you are moving through a dangerous area or want companions close to a Thief-led engagement.
Go Tells Pawns to act independently and spread out in combat. Use when independent action or wider battlefield coverage is useful and separation is not creating a new risk.

Capcom also notes that Pawn inclinations affect behavior. Two Pawns with the same vocation can therefore feel different in practice because they may tend toward different actions. When evaluating a hire, consider the vocation and the behavior you observe or the inclination information available to you. If a party repeatedly scatters when you need protection, “To me” is the direct corrective command; if it clumps when you need wider coverage, “Go” provides the opposite instruction.

Build your party around the Arisen’s missing function

Thief Arisen

Start with Mage and Fighter coverage, then choose Archer for physical range or Sorcerer for magick damage. This gives the Arisen direct, mobile close-range damage while Pawns cover healing, defense, and distance.

Fighter Arisen

Because Fighter already supplies shield-based defense, prioritize support and damage. Mage is the natural support choice; Archer or Sorcerer supplies a different damage angle. A second close-range role can still work, but it is less complementary than adding a function you do not personally provide.

Mage Arisen

Use a Fighter to protect the group while you provide healing, enchantments, and magick attacks. The remaining slot can be Archer for long-range pressure or another damage-oriented choice. Keep “Help” in mind when you want your support contribution emphasized.

Archer or Sorcerer Arisen

Add a frontline Fighter and a Mage if you need a complete support-and-defense foundation. Your own role already supplies distance or magick, so the compact party benefits from companions that can hold nearby space and recover from damage.

A step-by-step way to choose without overcommitting

  1. Define your personal contribution. Decide whether you want to be mobile close-range damage, a shielded protector, a healer and enchanter, a long-range attacker, or a powerful magick caster. This is more reliable than choosing by a supposed universal tier list.
  2. Pick the vocation that matches that contribution. Choose Thief for active mobility and direct damage; Fighter for guarding and companion protection; Mage for support; Archer for bow-based distance; or Sorcerer for powerful magick that needs casting time.
  3. Hire Pawns for functions you lack. With a Thief, start by looking for Mage and Fighter coverage, then choose a ranged or magick damage role. With Mage, prioritize a frontline Fighter and a damage source.
  4. Set a behavior objective. Use “Help” when support, healing, and recovery are the priority; “To me” when the party must stay beside you; and “Go” when independent action and spreading out are beneficial.
  5. Observe the party in real encounters. Ask what is actually failing: survival, healing, damage from distance, or cohesion. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a vocation, Pawn, or command solved the problem.
  6. Change vocation at a Vocation Guild if your preference changes. The decision is reversible, so test Thief against Fighter or Mage instead of treating the first selection as permanent.

Common mistakes with a small Pawn party

Choosing four overlapping damage roles

A compact party has limited slots. If every character is expected to do the same kind of close-range damage, you may leave healing, defense, or distance uncovered. Thief is easiest to complement when Pawns deliberately supply those missing functions.

Assuming the official role description is a ranking

Words such as “heavy damage” or “powerful magick attacks” describe a vocation’s intended function; they do not establish a complete ranking across every encounter. The available official material does not provide universal damage tests, a current balance tier list, or a best formation for every patch.

Ignoring casting and positioning requirements

Mage’s stronger spells take longer to cast, and Sorcerer’s powerful magick attacks require time and a safe casting position. If you choose either vocation, party composition and commands should help create that time rather than assuming the spellcaster can act freely in every fight.

Letting commands work against your objective

“Go” can spread Pawns out when your priority is coverage, but separation is counterproductive if you need them protecting you or a caster. “To me” is the cohesion command; “Help” is the support-oriented command. Treat them as tactical controls, not permanent settings.

Refusing to change after the role feels wrong

Capcom’s manual makes vocation changes available at a Vocation Guild. If you consistently want a shield, more support, or a different attack distance, switch rather than forcing Thief to solve a problem that belongs to another vocation.

What “best” means for this recommendation

Thief is “best” here in the narrower, useful sense of being the strongest default fit for a player who wants the Arisen to do substantial fighting while traveling with a small Pawn party. Its official description aligns with an active, mobile, direct-damage play style, and its role leaves clear complementary jobs for Pawns.

That wording does not claim that Thief has the highest damage in every situation, that it is safest for every player, or that the Mage–Fighter–Archer/Sorcerer arrangement is officially prescribed. Fighter may be better for a defense-first player; Mage may be better for someone who wants to support companions; Archer or Sorcerer may be better when distance is the priority. Because vocation changes are available, the most useful approach is to start with the role that matches your preferred decisions and revise it when actual play shows a different need.

Evidence and limits of the advice

This guide is based on official role and party descriptions from PlayStation and Capcom. PlayStation identifies Dragon’s Dogma 2 as released on March 22, 2024, describes leading up to three Pawn companions, and outlines the vocation functions used above. Capcom’s manual provides the vocation-change and Pawn-command details, including the effects of Help, Go, and To me, as well as the influence of Pawn inclinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those materials are descriptive rather than a controlled comparison. They do not establish a universal best vocation, exact damage rankings, a community-wide consensus, or a balance result that will remain unchanged across future updates. Use the recommendation as a role-based starting point, then adjust your vocation, Pawn selection, and commands to the encounters and behavior you actually experience.
