There is no evidence-based single “best” Don’t Starve Together (DST) host in 2026. The right choice depends on whether you value zero maintenance, control over a dedicated machine, or the simplest possible way to play with friends. In-game hosting costs nothing beyond the game, self-hosting gives you control but makes your computer responsible for the server, and a managed rental removes most maintenance in exchange for a recurring fee.
Among the paid services documented here, GPORTAL, BisectHosting, and Shockbyte all advertise DST hosting. Their product pages establish available features and example prices, but they do not provide a complete, independent comparison of renewal costs, cave support, backup retention, regions, or measured performance. Treat the figures below as offers to verify at checkout—not as a tested ranking.

When in-game hosting is enough
Use the in-game route when one person normally plays at the same time as everyone else and the group does not need a world available around the clock. Klei’s official help describes creating a world through the Host Game flow and includes a caves option: Klei’s cave and hosting help. This is the shortest path to a casual session, but it ties availability and performance to the host’s game session and computer.

When a dedicated server is worth the work
A dedicated server is appropriate when the group wants a persistent world, scheduled access, or deeper control over configuration. You remain responsible for the machine, the server software, updates, access control, logs, and recovery. It can be economical if you already have suitable hardware, but “free” hardware is not free of electricity, maintenance, or troubleshooting.
When managed hosting is the practical choice
Rent a managed instance when nobody wants to administer a server. The provider normally supplies a control panel and handles the underlying machine, while you configure the game. Confirm exactly what the plan includes: player slots, region, mod and file access, cave support, backups, restore behavior, and renewal pricing.

Caves are not merely another world setting. Klei states that hosting a forest and caves world requires multiple servers at the same time, is CPU-intensive, and needs a more capable computer setup. The official wording is: “Please note that hosting a forest and caves world requires running multiple servers at the same time which is CPU-intensive and requires a beefier computer setup.” See the Klei support explanation, updated July 15, 2026.
For in-game or self-hosted play, that warning applies directly to the computer running the session or dedicated processes. For a rental, ask whether the selected plan supports both Forest and Caves instances, how those instances are enabled, and whether the advertised slot count refers to the whole cluster or one process. A host that only promises a player count without describing cave configuration is not yet a confirmed fit.

What the published providers actually establish
The following services have dedicated DST product pages or listings in the cited material. These are vendor claims, not independent tests. No source here establishes which provider is fastest, most reliable, or cheapest after renewal.

Because the published pages do not expose the same fields in the same format, this is a candidate list rather than a winner’s table. A provider’s marketing feature is not proof of a particular performance level or retention policy.
How much does a DST server cost?
Two displayed figures provide a useful starting point, but neither is a guaranteed market rate. GPORTAL’s page showed 6 slots for $10.49 per 30 days and 10 slots for $15.99 per 30 days when viewed October 13, 2026. BisectHosting’s general listing showed DST starting at $11.99; the listing did not establish a comparable term, currency, resource allocation, or renewal price. Prices can vary by location, billing period, taxes, promotions, and checkout choices.
Calculate the real first-year cost before choosing:
- Record the displayed price, billing interval, currency, taxes, and any one-time setup charge.
- Check the renewal price after an introductory period or first billing cycle.
- Confirm whether the quoted slot count covers the world configuration you need, including Forest and Caves.
- Read cancellation and refund terms before payment.
- Compare like-for-like regions and resources rather than comparing a headline monthly number with a differently configured plan.
A low displayed price is not necessarily cheaper if it excludes the region your players need, has fewer resources for caves, or renews at a higher rate.

Use a hosting checklist before you buy
1. Match the region to the player group
Ask where the instance will run and whether that location is available on the exact plan. A geographically nearer region will generally reduce network distance, but that is an inference—not a measured latency result for any provider. Test from the players’ actual networks when the host offers a trial or cancellation window, and do not assume a provider’s total location count means every location is offered for DST.

2. Confirm Forest and Caves support
Ask whether one purchase can run both instances, how caves are enabled, and whether the slot limit applies to the combined world. Klei’s CPU warning makes this a resource question, not just a checkbox in a panel.
3. Check mod installation and file access
Mod support should be explicit. Determine whether you can install the mods your group uses, edit configuration files, upload files, and restart safely. BisectHosting and Shockbyte advertise DST mod support; the cited pages do not establish the exact workflow or limits. Ask for those details before ordering.
4. Define the backup promise
“Backups included” is incomplete without retention and restore details. Ask whether backups are automatic, how many are retained, how long they remain available, whether they consume your storage allowance, and whether restoring replaces the current world. GPORTAL’s page advertises backup space, but the cited listing does not establish retention length or restore procedure.
5. Read the support terms
Identify the contact channels, response expectations, and hours. BisectHosting advertises 24/7/365 help. That claim describes availability, not a guaranteed resolution time. For every provider, determine whether support can assist with game configuration or only the underlying service.

6. Understand the resource allocation
Slot count alone does not tell you the CPU or memory available to a cave-enabled world. Ask what hardware resources the plan exposes, whether resources are shared, and what happens if the instance reaches its limit. Do not treat an NVMe or “rapid setup” claim as a performance benchmark.
Self-hosting: a safe planning sequence
Klei publishes dedicated-server minimum figures, but labels them should be treated as legacy minimums rather than a modern buying recommendation. Its requirements page, updated July 25, 2025, lists 1.7+ GHz processor, 1+ GB RAM, and 1+ GB disk space for the dedicated server: Klei’s system requirements. The page contains older operating-system entries, so verify operating-system compatibility separately before deployment.
Klei also warns that insufficient host hardware can impair both host and client performance in its network and performance troubleshooting guide. Use the following planning order rather than treating the published minimum as a target:
- Choose the machine. Decide whether the server will run on a spare computer or another rented machine. Leave CPU headroom for caves and for the operating system.
- Install the current dedicated-server software. Follow Klei’s current distribution and installation instructions for your operating system; do not rely on old operating-system assumptions from the requirements page.
- Create and protect the server identity. Use the current account and authentication steps required by Klei, and keep credentials out of public chat or shared configuration files.
- Configure the world. Set the Forest world first, then enable the caves configuration your group wants. Because caves require multiple servers, verify that both processes start and remain online.
- Test with the real group. Have players join from their normal networks, watch CPU and memory use, and check for lag during loading and busy scenes.
- Back up before changes. Copy the world data before installing mods or changing world settings, and document how to restore it.
- Maintain it. Schedule updates, monitor disk growth, review logs after crashes, and retest after changing mods or cave settings.
The exact commands, token paths, and configuration filenames vary by current server distribution and operating system. Use Klei’s current instructions for those implementation details rather than copying an unverified command from an older guide.
Mods, caves, and recovery: common failure points
The server starts but caves are unavailable
Check that the plan or machine supports multiple server processes and that the provider’s control panel exposes the caves configuration. If the listing only mentions slots, ask support how Forest and Caves are provisioned.

Players experience lag after adding caves
Measure CPU load on the host and check whether the plan has a resource ceiling. Klei identifies caves hosting as CPU-intensive; moving to a plan with more headroom or reducing concurrent workload may be necessary. Do not infer that storage speed alone will solve CPU saturation.
A mod breaks the world
Stop changing multiple variables at once. Restore the last known-good backup, remove or disable the newest mod, and restart with one change at a time. Confirm how the provider performs restores before you need one.
The world disappears after a restart
Check whether the server was started with a new world configuration, whether the data directory changed, and whether the provider’s restore process replaced the active files. Keep an offline copy of important world data when the service permits it.
Players cannot connect
Verify that the server is running, the displayed address and access settings are current, and the host machine is not overloaded. Test from more than one player network to distinguish a server problem from a local connection issue. Klei’s troubleshooting guide is the appropriate starting point for network and performance symptoms.
A practical decision framework
Choose in-game hosting if
- Your group plays only when the host is present.
- You do not need a persistent world between sessions.
- You want to avoid a recurring service bill and server administration.
Choose self-hosting if
- You already have a machine you can keep online.
- You are comfortable with updates, backups, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- You need control that a managed panel may not expose.
Choose a managed provider if
- The world should remain available when no player’s home computer is running the game.
- Your group values a control panel and provider support over operating-system control.
- You have verified the exact plan’s caves capability, region, resource allocation, mods, backups, renewal price, and cancellation terms.
Bottom line for 2026
Do not select a DST host from a “fastest” or “best” label that the available evidence cannot support. For an occasional small group, start with Host Game. For persistent access and technical control, plan a dedicated server with more capacity than Klei’s published legacy minimums—especially when using caves.
