For most 2026 Don’t Starve Together servers, start with Combined Status, Global Positions, Minimap HUD, Geometric Placement, and ActionQueue Reborn. Add Extra Equipment Slots for convenience or Uncompromising Mode when everyone wants a harder world. Install the files on the dedicated server, enable them separately in every shard, and have players subscribe to the same Workshop items. Treat Wormhole Marks as a test-only option until its current Workshop comments and update date show that it is stable.
Which Don’t Starve Together mods are worth installing?
There is no official ranking of the “best” server mods. The practical choice depends on whether your group wants better information, faster building, less inventory friction, or a tougher survival loop. A 2026 Switchblade Gaming roundup calls the following a popular set, and Game Rant separately includes several of them among standout mods. Use that as a starting shortlist, then test the combination with the people who actually play on your server.
| Mod | What it changes | Best fit | Important requirement or caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combined Status | Adds detailed survival information to the HUD. | Nearly any cooperative world, especially groups that want clearer status information after the early game. | Named as a “past day one” must-have in a 2026 list. Confirm its current Workshop version before deployment. |
| Global Positions | Keeps teammate positions visible on the map. | Groups that split up to explore, gather, or fight. | Every player needs to run it. Without the client mod, the feature does nothing for players who lack it. |
| Minimap HUD | Provides an in-game minimap. | Players who find opening the full map disruptive during travel or combat. | Listed by Game Rant as a standout mod. Check client and server requirements on its Workshop page. |
| Geometric Placement | Helps place structures in consistent geometric layouts. | Organized bases, farms, roads, and defensive walls. | Listed by Switchblade Gaming. Test placement behavior alongside any other building-related mod. |
| ActionQueue Reborn | Queues compatible actions so repetitive jobs require fewer individual commands. | Experienced groups that want smoother harvesting, crafting, or base work. | Listed as an automation-oriented choice. Verify that its current release supports your game build. |
| Uncompromising Mode | Creates a more demanding ruleset for survival. | Veteran groups looking for a deliberately harsher challenge. | Do not add it to an established world casually; agree on the difficulty change first and test it on a copy. |
| Extra Equipment Slots | Expands the space available for equipment. | Groups that spend more time travelling or changing tools than surviving threats. | Listed by Switchblade Gaming as an inventory-focused option. Check whether all players need the client component. |
How to choose a starting combination
- Information-first server: Combined Status, Global Positions, and Minimap HUD.
- Base-building server: Combined Status and Geometric Placement, with the rest added one at a time.
- Convenience server: ActionQueue Reborn and Extra Equipment Slots, after agreeing how much automation your group considers acceptable.
- Challenge server: Uncompromising Mode by itself first, so a difficulty problem cannot be confused with a compatibility problem.
Adding every mod at once makes failures difficult to diagnose. A staged rollout—one or two items, a restart, then a short test world—takes longer initially but gives you a clear rollback point.
How server mods work in Don’t Starve Together
A dedicated server uses two different Lua files for two different jobs. Mixing those jobs is the most common reason a mod appears downloaded but does not work.

dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua: download instructions
This file lives in the server installation’s mods folder. The server reads it during boot and downloads the listed Steam Workshop items. A Workshop ID is written as a quoted string:
ServerModSetup("350811795")
Replace the example number with the actual ID shown in the mod’s Workshop URL. Downloading is not the same as enabling: this file only tells the server what to obtain.
If you maintain a Workshop collection, you can pull the collection instead of entering each item individually:
ServerModCollectionSetup("COLLECTION_ID")
Use the collection ID, not a mod ID. Keep a written list of the individual items as well; it makes it easier to identify a broken update or remove one mod without abandoning the entire collection.
modoverrides.lua: enablement and options
Each shard has its own configuration file. In a normal cluster, place one file in Master/ and another in Caves/. A downloaded mod remains inactive until it is enabled here. The entry must use the workshop- prefix:
return {
["workshop-350811795"] = {
enabled = true
}
}
For a cluster with both Master and Caves, copy the relevant entries into both shard folders. A server-wide mod that is enabled only in Master can appear to work on the surface while behaving differently—or not at all—in the caves.
Why the two files must agree
The setup file answers “what should the server download?” The override file answers “what should this shard load, and with which settings?” You normally need both. A line in dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua without a matching enabled entry downloads the files but leaves the feature off. An enabled entry without a successful download gives the server no usable mod files.

Step-by-step installation on a dedicated server
1. Back up the cluster
Stop the server cleanly and copy the entire cluster directory, including the Master and Caves folders and their existing configuration files. Keep the backup outside the live server directory. A mod can change world behavior or make a shard fail during startup, and a backup is the simplest recovery.
2. Collect the exact Workshop IDs
Open each mod’s Steam Workshop page and copy its numeric item ID. Do not copy a display name, an author’s profile ID, or a collection ID into a ServerModSetup line. Keep a small change log with the mod name, ID, date added, and whether it is required by clients.
3. Add downloads to the server setup file
Open the server installation’s mods/dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua. Add one line per item:
ServerModSetup("MOD_ID_ONE")
ServerModSetup("MOD_ID_TWO")
ServerModSetup("MOD_ID_THREE")
Save the file as plain text with the exact filename. If you use a collection, use ServerModCollectionSetup("COLLECTION_ID") instead of, or in addition to, individual entries according to the way you manage the server.

4. Start once and watch the download
Boot the server and inspect its console or log output. Confirm that each requested Workshop item downloads without an authentication, network, or invalid-ID error. Stop the server after the download phase if you want to configure everything before anyone joins.
5. Create or edit the Master override
Open the cluster’s Master/modoverrides.lua, or create it if it does not exist. Add an enabled block for each mod you want active on the surface:
return {
["workshop-MOD_ID_ONE"] = {
enabled = true
},
["workshop-MOD_ID_TWO"] = {
enabled = true
}
}
Each table entry needs a comma between it and the next entry. The final entry does not need a trailing comma. A missing comma or stray trailing comma can prevent the whole table from loading.

6. Repeat the configuration for Caves
If the cluster runs caves, place a corresponding modoverrides.lua in Caves/. Server-wide mods should be enabled in both folders. If a mod is intentionally surface-only, document that choice so a later administrator does not mistake the missing Caves entry for an error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches7. Add options using the mod’s own keys
Options belong inside the mod’s block. The names are mod-specific; do not invent names based on the wording of a menu label. A misspelled key is ignored and the mod falls back to its default. The safest shortcut is to enable the mod in a local game client, set its options through the client interface, and copy the generated block into the server file. Then repeat the copy for the other shard.
8. Restart after every configuration change
Fully stop and restart the dedicated server after changing either file. Have one player join, test the feature, travel between shards if applicable, and check the log for Lua or mod-load errors before opening the server to the whole group.
9. Have every player subscribe
The server does not automatically push Workshop files to players. Each player must subscribe to the same required Workshop mods through their own Steam account. Give the group the exact Workshop links or IDs and ask them to restart the game if Steam has not finished downloading an update.
Do all players need the same mods?
Not always, but you should assume a shared requirement unless the mod clearly documents a server-only design. Every player needs to subscribe to the Workshop items that the mod requires on the client; the dedicated server’s download does not install them for players.
Global Positions is a concrete example
Global Positions requires every client to run it. If one player does not have the client mod, the position feature does nothing for that player. Use a join checklist or a pinned server message so a missing subscription is caught before a session starts.
Use the Workshop description as the authority
Client/server behavior varies by mod and can change with updates. Read the current Workshop description and comments for each item, rather than assuming that a mod with a server configuration block is server-only. Record the requirement in your server notes and revisit it whenever the mod updates.

Fixing a modoverrides.lua file that does not work
The server downloaded the mod but nothing changed
- Confirm the entry is in
modoverrides.lua, not only indedicated_server_mods_setup.lua. - Check that the key begins with
workshop-and is followed by the exact numeric ID. - Verify
enabled = trueis inside the mod’s braces. - Make sure the file is inside the active shard folder, such as
Master/, rather than merely in the cluster’s parent directory. - Restart the server after saving.
One typo disables several entries
Lua tables are sensitive to punctuation. Check for a missing comma between blocks, an extra comma that your server’s Lua parser rejects, unmatched braces, and quotation marks that were replaced by typographic “smart quotes.” Reduce the file to one known-good entry, start the server, and add the remaining blocks one at a time.
An option is ignored
Compare the option name character for character with the mod’s documented key. Capitalization, underscores, and spelling matter. An unrecognized key is ignored and the default value is used, so a successful server start does not prove that every setting was accepted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →It works in Master but not in Caves
Copy the enabled entry into Caves/modoverrides.lua and restart. A cluster does not automatically share the Master override with the Caves shard.
Players cannot see a client feature
Check each player’s Workshop subscriptions and confirm that Steam finished updating the item. For Global Positions, every client must have the mod. A server-side download alone cannot supply the missing client component.
The server crashes or disconnects after adding a mod
- Stop the server and restore the last working backup if the world is needed immediately.
- Remove the newest mod from both shard override files, leaving its download line in place if you want to test it again.
- Start the server and verify stability.
- Check the Workshop item’s current comments and update date, then test the mod in a disposable world before returning it to the main cluster.
Do not diagnose several new mods at once. Reintroduce them individually so the failing item is identifiable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Wormhole Marks: popular, but verify before installing
Wormhole Marks appears in many recommendation lists and was ranked number 10 in one 2026 roundup. A Switchblade Gaming headline described it as having about 3.5 million subscribers; another 2026 excerpt reported 3,516,918 subscribers, although that publisher was not confirmed in the excerpt available for review. Those counts show attention, not reliability.
Recommended Free Tools
The more important warning is maintenance: Switchblade reported that Wormhole Marks had not been updated since February 2016, while comments reportedly mentioned crashes and disconnects. Before adding it, open the current Workshop page and check the displayed update date, recent comments, and compatibility reports. Test it on a copied world. If the item is stale or unstable, leave it out even if an old list calls it essential.

Keeping a modded server maintainable
Use a small, documented mod set
Write down each mod’s name, Workshop ID, purpose, whether clients need it, and the date you last tested it. This turns a future crash into a solvable change comparison instead of guesswork.
Separate convenience from difficulty changes
Quality-of-life mods such as status, map, placement, action-queue, and equipment changes can be evaluated independently. Uncompromising Mode changes the character of the world; introduce it in a fresh or backed-up world after everyone agrees.
Stage updates
Do not update every Workshop item immediately before a scheduled group session. Update one item, start a test copy, check both shards, and invite one player. Keep the previous configuration and backup until the new version has survived a complete test.

What to install first
- Install Combined Status and test the HUD.
- Add Global Positions only after every player has subscribed.
- Add Minimap HUD if the group wants constant map context.
- Choose Geometric Placement for a base-focused world.
- Add ActionQueue Reborn or Extra Equipment Slots for convenience, one at a time.
- Reserve Uncompromising Mode for a clearly agreed veteran challenge.
- Evaluate Wormhole Marks separately and only after its current Workshop maintenance looks credible.
This order prioritizes information and coordination, then changes to building and workflow, while isolating the mod most clearly associated with stale maintenance reports.
How current are these recommendations?
The primary popular-mod list used here was published in 2026. Game Rant also identified Combined Status, Global Positions, and Minimap HUD among notable choices. A Basically Average list was last updated on November 3, 2025, so treat it as older context when a newer Workshop update or a 2026 list disagrees. None of those roundup excerpts independently verifies every mod’s current release date. The Workshop page, server log, and a test world remain the decisive checks before production use.
