For a Samsung TV and Dolby Atmos soundbar, use an HDMI ARC/eARC connection, set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto when available, choose Auto or Pass-Through for Digital Output Audio Format, and enable Dolby Atmos or Dolby Atmos Compatibility. The exact labels vary by model, software version and country.

Those settings only work when the film, episode, game or disc contains an Atmos track and the source device sends it as bitstream or unprocessed audio. When the soundbar detects Atmos, its display should show DOLBY ATMOS; no separate “Atmos sound mode” is required.

What you need before changing settings

Dolby Atmos is an audio format, not a universal equalizer curve. The result depends on the TV, soundbar, source device, HDMI path, room and the particular Atmos mix. Samsung’s support instructions do not establish one universal bass, treble, speaker-level or distance setting for every soundbar, so begin with signal routing and format detection rather than copying a model-specific EQ preset.

Compatible equipment

  • Check the exact TV model and soundbar model for Dolby Atmos support. The Samsung brand alone does not guarantee that two products support the same formats.
  • Use the television socket marked HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, and the soundbar socket marked HDMI ARC/eARC. Samsung’s US instructions specify eARC for Atmos delivered from a TV.
  • Use a High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet HDMI cable. Samsung recommends this cable class for HDMI soundbar setup; a cable cannot add Atmos capability to equipment that lacks it.
  • Have Atmos-encoded content available. A title or game that carries only stereo or ordinary surround cannot trigger the Atmos indicator.

Samsung’s US Dolby Atmos support guide and UK soundbar setup guide describe the connection and format requirements. Consult the manuals for your exact models when a port or menu has a different name.

Why HDMI is essential

Samsung’s UK format table lists uncompressed Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Atmos, over HDMI-eARC. It lists compressed Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Atmos, over HDMI and eARC. Optical and Bluetooth are not listed as carrying those Atmos formats in that table, so use HDMI ARC/eARC rather than an optical cable when Atmos is the goal.

Recommended Samsung TV and soundbar settings

Open the television’s sound menus while the soundbar is connected. Current Samsung menu structures generally place these controls under Settings > Sound, with output selection under Sound Output and format controls under Expert Settings. Menu wording and availability change with model year, software, enabled features and geography.

Setting Recommended starting value What it does
Sound Output Your Samsung soundbar (HDMI) Routes TV audio to the bar instead of the television speakers.
HDMI eARC Mode Auto, when available Allows the TV and soundbar to negotiate the eARC connection and supported formats.
Digital Output Audio Format Auto or Pass-Through Sends a compatible encoded signal instead of forcing a lower-format conversion.
Dolby Atmos / Dolby Atmos Compatibility On, when the option is present Permits Atmos signaling on supported Samsung TV models.
External player audio Bitstream, Unprocessed or “No Encoding” Lets a player or console send the original Atmos bitstream to the TV or soundbar.
External-player secondary audio Off, if the player provides this option Prevents a secondary-audio mix from replacing the primary Atmos track.

Samsung’s US page documents Dolby Digital or Auto for its Digital Output Audio Format control, while its Philippines instructions recommend Auto or Pass-Through. Choose the options that your model actually presents and verify the result on the soundbar rather than assuming one regional menu applies everywhere. The Samsung Canada sound-settings guide also cautions that labels and choices depend on the television.

Step-by-step Dolby Atmos setup

1. Confirm Atmos support on both devices

Read the specifications or manual for the specific TV and soundbar. Look for Dolby Atmos and for an ARC or eARC HDMI port. If either device lacks Atmos support, changing a menu cannot create an Atmos signal; use the highest surround format both devices support instead.

2. Make the HDMI ARC/eARC connection

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
  2. Plug one end of a High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet HDMI cable into the television’s port labeled ARC or eARC.
  3. Plug the other end into the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. A regular HDMI input on the bar is not the return-audio port.
  4. Power on the TV and soundbar, then allow a few seconds for HDMI-CEC device detection.

Samsung’s connection diagrams and cable guidance are in its official UK setup instructions. If your TV and bar expose different capabilities, the manuals take precedence over a generic menu path.

3. Select the soundbar as the TV output

On the TV, open Settings > Sound > Sound Output and select the connected Samsung soundbar. If the television remains on TV Speaker, it may never send the program audio through ARC/eARC. The exact path can differ, so use the on-screen search function or model manual if those labels are absent.

4. Set eARC and digital output

Go to Settings > Sound > Expert Settings. Set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto if that control is available. Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through; some Samsung US menus instead offer Dolby Digital or Auto. Do not force a choice that your model does not provide.

5. Enable the Atmos compatibility option

Turn on Dolby Atmos or Dolby Atmos Compatibility when the TV shows that option. This is an enabling control, not a guarantee that every program is Atmos. A stereo broadcast, ordinary Dolby Digital movie or non-Atmos game will remain in its native format.

6. Configure an external source

For a Blu-ray player, console or streaming box connected to the TV or soundbar, open that device’s audio settings and choose Bitstream, Unprocessed or No Encoding. Disable Secondary Audio if the device offers it and it interferes with the primary track. Select a title that explicitly includes Dolby Atmos. Samsung’s Philippines Atmos instructions cover these source-output choices.

7. Verify detection

Start the Atmos program and watch the soundbar display. Samsung says it displays DOLBY ATMOS when it detects Atmos media. If the indicator does not appear, stop changing sound-effect presets and work through the troubleshooting checks below; the missing indicator usually means the source, path or format is wrong.

Choosing settings for different source types

Built-in TV apps

When the app runs on the Samsung TV, the television is the source and ARC/eARC carries its audio to the bar. Select the HDMI soundbar under Sound Output, keep HDMI eARC Mode on Auto where offered, and use Auto or Pass-Through for digital output. Then play a title identified by the service as Dolby Atmos and check the bar’s display. A title without an Atmos track will not produce the indicator even when every setting is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blu-ray player, console or streaming box

The external device must send the original signal rather than converting it to stereo or PCM. Select Bitstream, Unprocessed or No Encoding, and turn off Secondary Audio when that option is available and causes a mixdown. Confirm that the disc, game or stream itself includes Atmos. If the device offers several HDMI outputs, follow its manual and keep the TV-to-soundbar return path on the ARC/eARC sockets.

Compressed versus uncompressed Atmos

Samsung’s format table distinguishes compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos from uncompressed Dolby TrueHD Atmos. Streaming services commonly use the compressed format, while a compatible disc can use the uncompressed format. This distinction explains why eARC is important for the highest-bitrate path, while an ARC connection may still carry compressed Atmos when the TV, soundbar and source all support it. The weakest device or connection determines what reaches the bar.

Understanding the important trade-offs

Auto versus Pass-Through

Auto lets the television select a compatible output format. Pass-Through asks it to forward the encoded signal without unnecessary conversion. Samsung’s regional support pages recommend either option depending on the model. There is no universal winner: select the option available on your TV that allows the soundbar to show DOLBY ATMOS with known Atmos content. If one choice produces silence or PCM-only output, return to the other and test again.

eARC versus ARC

eARC provides the bandwidth and format support required for uncompressed Dolby TrueHD Atmos according to Samsung’s UK table. ARC can carry compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos where the TV, source and soundbar all support it. The practical choice is therefore determined by the weakest link: use eARC when all three devices provide it and use ARC when that is the available compatible path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Atmos detection versus sound-effect presets

Do not add Adaptive, Surround, Game or another effect mode to “activate” Atmos. The soundbar detects an Atmos bitstream automatically. Samsung Support states: “When Dolby Atmos is active, the Soundbar’s sound effect modes will not be available.” That behavior is expected, not a fault. Effect-mode controls become relevant again when the incoming program is not Atmos.

SpaceFit Sound

SpaceFit Sound is an optional room-calibration feature on supported Samsung systems. It is not required for Atmos decoding. If your model and region support it, use the soundbar remote’s Sound Control button until SpaceFit Sound appears, then press Up to enable it. Samsung notes that compatibility varies and that environmental characteristics, including the ceiling, can affect sound effects and performance. Check the Australia-specific compatibility information before relying on the feature: Samsung SpaceFit Sound support.

Q-Symphony

Q-Symphony is a separate Samsung TV-and-soundbar feature with its own model and connection requirements. The available support information does not establish it as a universal Atmos optimization, so treat it as optional and model-specific rather than a prerequisite for Atmos.

Settings that should not be treated as universal

There is no evidence-based single bass, treble, center-level, distance or volume recipe that is best for every Samsung bar. Drivers, room dimensions, seating position, ceiling height and the mix itself all change the result. Start with the neutral defaults supplied by the model, confirm that Atmos is detected, and make personal tonal changes only afterward. A tonal change cannot repair a missing Atmos bitstream.

Likewise, do not assume that a more expensive HDMI cable, a longer cable or a different sound mode creates Atmos. The cable recommendation is a High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet HDMI cable of suitable length for the equipment. Verify the labels on both ports and the cable’s condition; replace a suspect cable when the devices fail to negotiate, but do not expect any cable to add a codec that the TV or bar does not support.

Signal paths and supported Atmos formats

Connection or format path Atmos capability identified by Samsung Practical implication
HDMI-eARC Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Atmos Use when TV, soundbar and source all support eARC and the source supplies that format.
HDMI or HDMI-ARC Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Atmos Suitable for compressed Atmos when every device in the path supports it.
Optical Atmos formats are not listed in Samsung’s table Use HDMI ARC/eARC for an Atmos setup.
Bluetooth Atmos formats are not listed in Samsung’s table Use a wired HDMI path instead of Bluetooth.

The format distinction explains why two systems can both report “Atmos support” yet deliver different bitstreams. A compressed streaming soundtrack and an uncompressed disc soundtrack may require different links, while the on-screen menu still uses similar words.

Troubleshooting when Atmos does not appear

No “DOLBY ATMOS” indicator

  • Confirm the title or game actually includes an Atmos track; test with another known Atmos item.
  • Check that the soundbar model supports Atmos and that the TV output is the HDMI soundbar, not TV Speaker.
  • Verify that the cable is connected to the ARC/eARC sockets at both ends.
  • Recheck HDMI eARC Mode, Digital Output Audio Format and the Dolby Atmos compatibility option.
  • On an external player, replace PCM or transcoding with Bitstream, Unprocessed or “No Encoding,” and turn off Secondary Audio if available.
  • Power-cycle the TV, source and soundbar after changing HDMI settings so they renegotiate the connection.

The TV and soundbar do not connect

On a Samsung TV, make sure Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is enabled, then confirm that both plugs are in the ports marked ARC/eARC. Try another known-good High Speed HDMI cable if the devices still do not detect each other. A cable in an ordinary HDMI input will not provide the audio-return channel.

The menu labels do not match

Samsung states that setting availability and wording vary with TV model, year, software version, activated features and geography. A setting may be called Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Compatibility, Digital Output Audio Format or something similar, and some models may omit it entirely. Search the exact model manual rather than forcing a setting from a different region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optical is the only available cable

Optical is not the recommended Atmos path in Samsung’s format table and cannot carry some higher-bitrate formats such as Dolby Digital Plus. Replace it with HDMI ARC/eARC if both products provide those ports. If neither device has ARC/eARC, Atmos cannot be assumed from an optical connection.

There is sound, but it is only PCM or stereo

PCM output often indicates that the TV or source converted the signal before it reached the bar. Revisit the source’s bitstream setting, the TV’s Digital Output Audio Format, and the eARC connection. Test with a title known to include Atmos and read the soundbar’s front-panel message; listening alone cannot reliably identify the encoded format.

Atmos appears briefly, then disappears

Check whether playback switched to a different title, episode, menu or audio-language track. Atmos is content-dependent, so the indicator can change when the incoming program changes. Also verify that the external player has not re-enabled Secondary Audio or changed from bitstream to PCM after an update.

A quick verification checklist

  • TV and soundbar model manuals confirm Dolby Atmos support.
  • HDMI cable runs from TV ARC/eARC to soundbar ARC/eARC.
  • TV Sound Output is set to the HDMI soundbar.
  • HDMI eARC Mode is Auto where offered.
  • Digital Output Audio Format is Auto or Pass-Through, or the model’s documented Dolby Digital/Auto choice.
  • Dolby Atmos or Dolby Atmos Compatibility is enabled when present.
  • External source output is Bitstream, Unprocessed or “No Encoding.”
  • Secondary Audio is disabled when it prevents the primary Atmos track.
  • The program itself carries Dolby Atmos.
  • The soundbar display shows DOLBY ATMOS during playback.

Once those checks pass, leave the soundbar’s effect-mode controls alone during Atmos playback and use SpaceFit Sound only if your particular system supports it and you want room calibration. The settings are correct when the compatible Atmos signal reaches the bar and the bar confirms detection, not when a particular regional menu happens to look identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Dolby Atmos settings for a Samsung soundbar?

Connect the TV ARC/eARC port to the soundbar ARC/eARC port, select the bar under Sound Output, set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto when available, choose Auto or Pass-Through for Digital Output Audio Format, and enable Dolby Atmos or Dolby Atmos Compatibility. Then verify the bar displays DOLBY ATMOS with known Atmos content.

Do I need eARC for Dolby Atmos?

Samsung identifies eARC for TV-delivered Atmos and lists uncompressed Dolby TrueHD Atmos on HDMI-eARC. Compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos may work over HDMI ARC when the TV, source and soundbar all support it. Check each model’s specifications.

Can optical or Bluetooth carry Atmos to a Samsung soundbar?

Samsung’s UK format table does not list Atmos over optical or Bluetooth. Use a wired HDMI ARC/eARC connection for an Atmos setup, with a High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet HDMI cable.

Why does my Samsung soundbar not show DOLBY ATMOS?

Confirm that the title includes Atmos, the TV output is the HDMI soundbar, both cables use ARC/eARC ports, and the TV uses Auto or Pass-Through digital output. External players should use Bitstream, Unprocessed or No Encoding, with Secondary Audio off when it causes a mixdown.

Should I turn on Adaptive or Surround mode for Atmos?

No. Atmos is detected automatically from the incoming bitstream. Samsung states that sound-effect modes are unavailable while Dolby Atmos is active, so the missing effect-mode controls are normal.

Is SpaceFit Sound required for Atmos?

No. SpaceFit Sound is optional room calibration on supported Samsung systems. If your model and region support it, enable it with the remote’s Sound Control button; environmental factors such as the ceiling can affect results.

What if my Samsung TV menus use different names?

Samsung says labels and available settings vary by model, year, software version, enabled features and geography. Look for equivalent Sound Output, Expert Settings, eARC, digital-output and Atmos-compatibility controls in the exact model manual.

Can a new HDMI cable add Atmos to an incompatible system?

No. A High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet HDMI cable is the recommended class for setup, but it cannot add Atmos support to a TV, soundbar or source that lacks the required capability.

The Bottom Line

The dependable Samsung Atmos setup is an HDMI ARC/eARC path, TV output set to the soundbar, eARC on Auto where available, digital output on Auto or Pass-Through, and Atmos compatibility enabled. Send external sources as bitstream or unprocessed audio, play content that actually includes Atmos, and confirm the bar displays DOLBY ATMOS. Treat SpaceFit Sound and Q-Symphony as optional, model-specific features.
