For a workflow that needs both direct editing of existing PDF content and signature requests, compare Foxit PDF Editor with Foxit eSign, Adobe Acrobat with Acrobat Sign, and Dropbox’s PDF editor and signature workflow. These are product families or workflows, not guarantees that every capability is included in every plan. If your priority is creating proposals rather than editing arbitrary PDFs, PandaDoc may also be worth considering—but verify its current PDF-editing capabilities first.
The key distinction is that editing a PDF and sending it for signature are separate jobs. A tool may let you add a signature or form field without letting you rewrite existing text or replace an image. Choose based on the document you need to change, how signatures must be collected, and the plan’s current limits—not just the fact that a product advertises “PDF” and “signing.”
What to check before replacing DocuSign
Start with the work you actually need to do. “Edit and sign a PDF” can mean correcting existing text, adding a note, filling in a form, placing your own signature, or preparing a document for other people to sign. These are not interchangeable capabilities.
- Editing existing content: Can you change text or images already in the PDF, or can you only add annotations and overlays?
- Preparing a request: Can you place signature and other form fields where signers need them?
- Routing and tracking: Can you set up the signing process, see its progress, and manage completed agreements?
- Signer access: Can recipients sign in a browser or on a mobile device, and must they create an account or buy software?
- Fit with your work: Does the workflow connect to the storage, office tools, or business systems you already use, and does it work on your devices?
- Total cost and limits: Check the current plan’s editing and sending entitlements, user or seat requirements, and any limits that matter to your expected volume.
A signature tool can be suitable for collecting signatures yet still fall short as a PDF editor. Conversely, a capable PDF editor may not provide the sending, routing, and completion management your process requires.

Questions that reveal the real requirement
Before comparing brands, answer a few operational questions. Are you correcting a finished PDF, or are you generating a document from a template? Do you need to preserve the original layout while changing a sentence, price, date, or image? Will one person sign, or will several people sign in sequence? Do you need reminders, a refusal or decline path, or visibility into which signer is holding up the request? Must a completed agreement be stored with an audit record, or is a manually downloaded copy sufficient?
Also identify who owns the process. A solo user may need one editor and occasional sends. A team may need several seats, shared templates, administrative controls, and a predictable sending allowance. Those are different buying decisions even when the PDF looks the same.
How the main alternatives differ
| Option | PDF editing and preparation | Signature workflow | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foxit PDF Editor with Foxit eSign | Foxit describes PDF Editor as supporting PDF creation, editing, annotation, signing, and sharing. Foxit eSign is a distinct offering for preparing PDFs and placing signature fields. | Foxit eSign describes guiding signers, collecting signatures, tracking progress, and managing completed agreements. | People who want a dedicated PDF editor and a separate e-signature workflow from the same vendor; verify the license or subscription needed for both. |
| Adobe Acrobat with Acrobat Sign | Adobe describes Acrobat Pro as providing tools to edit and sign PDFs. | Adobe documents sending signature requests through Acrobat or Reader with Acrobat Sign cloud services. Recipients can sign in a browser or on a mobile device without buying an Adobe product. | People who need PDF editing and a cloud-based signature request process, subject to confirming which plan supplies the needed authoring, sending, tracking, and administration functions. |
| Dropbox PDF editor and signature workflow | Dropbox describes adding, deleting, and editing PDF text, then adding form fields. | Dropbox says users can send a signature request without leaving Dropbox. | People who already work in Dropbox and want to handle PDF changes and signature requests within that environment; check availability for your account, plan, and location. |
| PandaDoc | A PandaDoc comparison article discusses its editor for uploaded Word documents, but does not establish full direct editing of existing PDF content. | The article positions PandaDoc around document creation and e-signatures. | People whose main job is creating proposals or sales documents, after confirming the current product documentation for their PDF-editing needs. |
The table describes vendor-stated product positioning, not results from hands-on testing. Product names can span multiple plans or services, so the combination in a row does not mean all listed capabilities are included together by default.
Foxit: a PDF editor plus a separate e-signature service
Foxit’s two offerings address different parts of the job. Foxit PDF Editor is described as handling creation, editing, annotation, signing, and sharing. Foxit eSign is described as a service for preparing PDFs, guiding signers, collecting signatures, tracking progress, and managing completed agreements. Its pricing page says signature fields can be placed directly on PDF documents.
This separation matters when budgeting and checking feature access: do not assume a PDF Editor license automatically includes the eSign sending workflow, or that an eSign plan includes the PDF content-editing tools you need. Ask which specific license or subscription provides each requirement. Foxit’s PDF Editor page advertises a perpetual-license option for Windows and macOS as well as subscription products. The availability and terms of those offers can change, so check the current vendor pages before deciding.
Choose Foxit when
- You need a PDF editor and want to evaluate a separate, purpose-built signature service from the same vendor.
- You need to alter existing PDF content as well as prepare documents for other people to sign.
- A perpetual license for a Windows or macOS editor is relevant to your purchasing decision; confirm its current scope and whether it covers the sending workflow.
Check before committing
- Which Foxit product and plan includes each editing, sending, tracking, and agreement-management capability you need.
- Whether the current eSign plan’s limits suit your signing volume and signer process.
- Whether the editor supports your operating system and any required integrations.
- Whether a perpetual license receives the updates or connected services your process depends on, rather than assuming it behaves like a subscription.
Adobe: Acrobat editing with Acrobat Sign requests
Adobe describes Acrobat Pro as offering tools to edit and sign PDFs, while its documentation explains that signature requests can be sent through Acrobat or Reader using Acrobat Sign cloud services. A useful point for recipients is that Adobe says signers can complete a request through a browser or mobile device without purchasing an Adobe product.

That recipient convenience does not answer what the sender’s plan includes. Confirm the exact Acrobat or Acrobat Sign plan for the work you expect to do: authoring or preparing a request, sending it, tracking its status, and administering completed agreements may have plan-specific entitlements. Adobe’s product-family names should not be treated as proof that every capability is bundled into every subscription.

- You want to investigate PDF editing and signature requests within Adobe’s Acrobat ecosystem.
- Your recipients need a browser or mobile signing path without purchasing Adobe software.
- You can confirm that the specific plan covers the request setup and management functions your organization requires.
Questions for an Acrobat evaluation
- Is the user who edits the PDF also licensed to send requests, or do those functions require different products?
- Which users can see status, resend a request, download a completed agreement, or administer settings?
- Are your required integrations and mobile or desktop workflows included in the plan you are pricing?
Dropbox: edit and request signatures within its workflow
Dropbox describes a workflow for adding, deleting, and editing PDF text, adding form fields, and sending signature requests without leaving Dropbox. That may reduce context switching if your files and day-to-day work already live there.
Do not infer universal access from the product description. Dropbox says availability should be checked by plan, geography, and account type. Also verify whether its editing and signing workflow has the integrations, supported devices, routing options, and records your process requires. The product page establishes the described workflow, but it does not settle whether a particular account has access to every needed feature.
Choose Dropbox when
- Your documents are already managed in Dropbox and keeping the editing and request steps there is useful.
- The described text-editing, form-field, and signature-request functions match the changes you need to make.
- You have verified access and plan eligibility for your account and location.
Dropbox-specific pitfalls
Convenience inside a storage platform can hide workflow gaps. Check whether the person preparing the PDF can also send it, whether multiple signers can be routed in the order you need, and how completed files and evidence are retained. Confirm what happens when a request is declined, expires, or needs correction. If your organization relies on a CRM or office suite, verify the integration rather than assuming that keeping files in Dropbox supplies it automatically.
When PandaDoc is a different kind of fit
PandaDoc is a conditional alternative rather than a clear substitute for a full PDF editor. Its comparison article emphasizes document creation and e-signatures and discusses an editor for uploaded Word files; that does not establish that you can directly change arbitrary existing PDF text or images. Because this distinction is based on a vendor-authored comparison rather than a definitive current feature specification, check PandaDoc’s current product documentation before relying on it for PDF-native editing.
Recommended Free Tools
If your main task is producing proposals or sales documents and collecting signatures, that product focus may be relevant. If your task is correcting an existing PDF, first confirm direct editing of its content—not simply adding fields, comments, or a signature on top.

Editing capability: avoid the annotation trap
“PDF editor” can describe several levels of control. Direct editing changes the text or image objects already in the file. Annotation adds a comment, highlight, drawing, or text box over the page. Form preparation adds fields for someone else to complete. Signing places a signature or initials. A product may be excellent at the last three while leaving the original text untouched.
Use a representative document during evaluation. Try correcting a misspelled word in a paragraph, replacing a logo, changing a date, and deleting an obsolete line. Then inspect the saved file on another device. If the change is merely an overlay, the old content may still exist underneath, affect accessibility, or appear when the file is printed or processed elsewhere. For sensitive documents, also confirm whether editing a file invalidates an existing signature or changes the completion record; a signed document often needs to remain immutable, so make edits before routing it for signature.
Signature workflow: the details that affect delivery
Preparing a signature request is more than dragging a signature box onto a page. Identify every signer and field owner, decide whether signing is sequential or parallel, and specify which fields are required. Check whether the service supports reminders, status views, reassignment, decline or cancellation, and a way to correct a request before it is completed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSigner experience can determine completion rates. Confirm whether recipients can use a browser or mobile device, whether an account is required, and whether identity checks or authentication steps are available for your transaction. Adobe’s documentation specifically says recipients can sign through a browser or mobile device without buying an Adobe product; obtain equivalent details from Foxit and Dropbox for your intended workflow rather than generalizing from Adobe.
Finally, inspect what you receive after completion. Determine whether the downloaded agreement includes the final PDF, a completion certificate or audit information, timestamps, and signer actions. Verify who can retrieve those records and how long they remain available. Do not assume that a signature image alone is the complete evidence package your organization needs.
A practical way to choose and verify a workflow
- Identify the change. Use a sample document to list what must change: existing text, images, annotations, or fillable fields. Separate content edits from signature placement.
- Map the signing process. Write down who signs, whether people must sign in a particular order, and what you need to do if a request is delayed. Check for field placement, progress tracking, and completed-agreement management.
- Check the recipient journey. Verify how recipients open and sign a request, which devices they can use, and whether they must create an account or purchase software. Adobe explicitly says recipients can use a browser or mobile device without buying an Adobe product; confirm comparable details directly with other vendors.
- Match features to the actual plan. Ask the vendor or consult its current plan details for editing, sending, tracking, and administration. For Foxit, assess PDF Editor and eSign separately; for Adobe, distinguish Acrobat from the Acrobat Sign functions available to the sender; for Dropbox, confirm account and location eligibility.
- Test the full process with a non-sensitive sample. Edit a copy of a representative PDF, prepare the fields, send a request to an internal test recipient if permitted, and inspect the completion record. This is a suggested evaluation method, not a claim that any product was tested here.
- Compare total cost and operational fit. Compare current terms for the plans you would actually use, including the number of users, sending or envelope limits, contract terms, integrations, and platform support. A headline price alone is not a like-for-like comparison.
- Document the decision. Record the plan name, included seats, send allowance, supported platforms, retention terms, and renewal conditions. Save links or screenshots of the terms you relied on so a later plan change does not surprise your team.
Vendor prices and plan entitlements change, and the available information does not establish a normalized current-price comparison across these different products. Check the vendor’s current pricing and plan pages directly before purchasing rather than comparing mismatched subscriptions.

Cost and licensing questions to ask
Price comparisons fail when one quote covers a PDF editor and another covers only signature sending. For each candidate, price the complete workflow: the people who edit, the people who prepare or send requests, and any administrators who need reporting or access controls. Ask whether those roles require separate seats.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Then estimate actual volume. List the number of documents sent per month, the number of signers per document, and seasonal peaks. Check for envelope, transaction, or send limits, overage rules, and minimum commitments. A low monthly price may not remain low if your team exceeds a usage allowance or needs a higher tier for routing and records. Conversely, a perpetual desktop license may not include the cloud service required to send requests, so compare its one-time cost with the continuing service cost rather than treating it as an all-in-one replacement.
Include the less visible costs: migration of templates, training, storage or retention requirements, integrations, and the time required to maintain two products. Obtain current terms from Foxit, Adobe, or Dropbox for the exact region and account type you will use. Commercial offers and feature entitlements can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Electronic signatures: confirm legal and recordkeeping needs
Whether an electronic signature is suitable depends on the transaction and governing jurisdiction; the product label alone does not establish that every document or signing process is legally valid. Adobe’s overview of U.S. electronic-signature laws describes the ESIGN Act and UETA as part of the U.S. framework, while also identifying exclusions and requirements and cautioning that the guide is not legal advice. See Adobe’s U.S. electronic-signature laws overview.
Before moving a business process to a new tool, determine which rules apply to the document and parties involved. Check requirements for consent, identity verification, retention, and recordkeeping, as well as whether the transaction is subject to an exclusion or a jurisdiction-specific rule. When the consequences matter, consult qualified legal advice rather than relying on a software vendor’s general overview.
Build those requirements into your evaluation. Ask how the service records consent, identifies the signer, preserves the final document, and lets you export evidence. Consider where records are stored, who can alter or delete them, and how your organization will respond to a dispute or audit. A technically successful signature request is not automatically a legally sufficient record in every jurisdiction or transaction.

Common mistakes when switching
- Buying an editor and assuming sending is included. Foxit explicitly presents PDF Editor and eSign as separate offerings; Adobe and Dropbox also have plan-specific distinctions.
- Confusing a signature mark with a signature request. Placing your own signature on a PDF does not create routing, reminders, signer fields, or completion tracking.
- Testing only an easy document. Evaluate a real layout with tables, images, and existing fields. Direct editing may behave differently on scanned or protected files, and the listed vendor pages do not establish identical support for every PDF type.
- Ignoring the recipient journey. A process that requires an unexpected account, unsupported device, or difficult authentication can delay completion.
- Comparing headline prices. Seat counts, send limits, contract terms, and separate services make many advertised prices non-comparable.
- Editing after signing. Change the source document first, then route it. Altering a completed agreement can undermine the integrity of the record.
- Skipping a records plan. Decide where completed PDFs and evidence will live, who can access them, and how retention obligations will be met.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which DocuSign alternative can edit existing PDF text and send signature requests?
Foxit’s combination of PDF Editor and Foxit eSign, Adobe Acrobat with Acrobat Sign, and Dropbox’s described PDF workflow are the main candidates to investigate. Confirm the exact plan because editing and sending may be separate entitlements.
Is Foxit PDF Editor the same product as Foxit eSign?
No. Foxit describes PDF Editor as the content-editing application and eSign as the service for preparing documents, routing them, collecting signatures, tracking progress, and managing completed agreements. Verify which license or subscription supplies both.
Can people sign an Adobe request without buying Adobe software?
Adobe’s help documentation says recipients can sign through a browser or mobile device without purchasing an Adobe product. Confirm the sender’s plan and required Acrobat Sign functions separately.

Dropbox describes adding, deleting, and editing PDF text, adding form fields, and sending a signature request within Dropbox. Availability depends on plan, geography, and account type, so verify access before relying on it.
Is PandaDoc a full PDF editor replacement?
Do not assume so. A PandaDoc comparison article emphasizes document creation, e-signatures, and an editor for uploaded Word documents; confirm current primary documentation before using it to edit arbitrary existing PDF text or images.
What should I test in a trial or evaluation?
Use a non-sensitive copy of a representative PDF. Correct existing text, replace an image, add required fields, route the request to test signers, check reminders and status, complete the signing, and inspect the final PDF and completion records.
How should I compare pricing?
Price the complete workflow, including editor and sender seats, send or envelope allowances, administrator access, integrations, platform support, and contract terms. Vendor prices and entitlements change, so compare current plans rather than headline prices.

The Bottom Line
For the closest DocuSign replacement that also addresses PDF content changes, start by comparing Foxit PDF Editor plus Foxit eSign, Adobe Acrobat plus Acrobat Sign, and Dropbox’s in-platform workflow. Choose Foxit if a dedicated editor and separate eSign service fit your purchasing model, Adobe if its Acrobat and recipient experience match your plan needs, or Dropbox if keeping the process in your existing file environment is the priority. Treat PandaDoc as a proposal-focused option until its current PDF-editing documentation confirms your use case. In every case, verify direct editing, routing, signer access, completion evidence, platform support, limits, total cost, and legal requirements before switching.
