A tall glass cabinet with adjustable shelves is the best starting point for most 7-inch action-figure collections. It keeps dust away, shows figures from several angles, and lets you create taller shelf bays for weapons, wings, vehicles, and display bases. The IKEA DETOLF is a useful reference because its narrow tower format, four-sided glass, and adjustable shelves suit many collections, but its interior is not automatically large enough for every posed figure or accessory. Measure each item at its widest and tallest point before you buy.
What is the best display case for 7-inch action figures?
For a collection of several 7-inch figures, choose a glass display cabinet with adjustable shelves, a stable frame, a door that seals reasonably well against dust, and enough depth for bases and accessories. A narrow glass tower is space-efficient and gives excellent visibility; a deeper modular cabinet is better when your collection includes vehicles, large wings, oversized dioramas, or many figures that must remain in dynamic poses.

Those internal figures—not the outside dimensions—determine whether your display works. A 7-inch figure can fit comfortably while a wide base, sword held diagonally, backpack, wing, or vehicle may not.

How to measure figures, stands, weapons, and vehicles
Measure the complete pose you intend to display, not the figure’s advertised height. Articulated figures can occupy much more space than their nominal scale suggests.
Record the true height
- Put the figure on its actual stand or base.
- Attach the tallest accessory you expect to leave installed, such as a helmet plume, raised weapon, antenna, wings, or effect part.
- Measure from the bottom of the base to the highest point of the pose.
- Add a small handling margin so you can remove the figure without scraping the shelf above it. Keep this margin separate from the cabinet’s nominal shelf spacing; a pose that technically fits may still be impractical to load.
Record the true width and depth
Measure the widest projection, not the torso. A broad stance, outstretched arm, horizontal rifle, cape, wing, shield, or vehicle can determine fit. For vehicles and dioramas, measure the complete footprint, including mirrors, weapons, rotating turrets, exhausts, and any removable display supports.
- Write down width, front-to-back depth, and height for every item.
- Measure unusual accessories in the orientation in which they will be displayed.
- Check whether the door frame or seal reduces the opening compared with the glass area.
- Leave enough hand room to place and remove the item without twisting it against adjacent pieces.
Make a simple inventory before shopping. Group pieces by height and footprint, then compare the largest group with the cabinet’s internal bay dimensions. This prevents a common mistake: buying a cabinet that holds the figures but not the bases and accessories that make the display worthwhile.

The load figure matters because a shelf carrying several light plastic figures is a different situation from one carrying a dense resin statue, metal vehicle, or stone-like diorama. Spread weight over the shelf instead of concentrating it at one point, and never assume that a shelf’s glass thickness alone proves its safe capacity.

How shelf layout controls whether accessories fit
Use taller bays for vertical accessories
Evenly spaced shelves create a predictable grid, but a grid is not always the best display. Remove or reposition one shelf when a figure’s raised weapon, wing, staff, or effect part approaches the glass above it. A taller bay is preferable to forcing the figure into a compressed pose that hides the accessory or risks contact with the glass.
Use shorter bays for standard figures
Keep closely spaced shelves where the figures are compact and accessories stay near the body. This increases total capacity, but only if every item can be removed without catching on the shelf above. Plan the cabinet as a set of different-height zones rather than trying to give every shelf identical spacing.
Reserve a bay for vehicles and dioramas
A vehicle often needs more depth and clearance than a standing figure. Give it a dedicated bay so its footprint, doors, turrets, or weapon systems do not force neighboring figures into awkward positions. If one vehicle consumes most of a tower’s usable depth, a deeper modular cabinet or bookcase-style system may be a better long-term choice.

Step-by-step: plan and load a cabinet safely
- Inventory the collection. List each figure, base, weapon, wing, vehicle, and diorama component. Record the complete displayed dimensions.
- Identify the largest pieces. Sort by height, width, and depth. The largest accessory or vehicle—not the average figure—should determine the minimum bay size.
- Map the shelves on paper. Sketch each bay and assign tall pieces first. Use shorter bays for compact figures only after the tall items have a home.
- Check the opening and room. Confirm that the door frame does not block your widest base and that the cabinet has the recommended clear space in front for full door movement.
- Assemble on a level surface. A level cabinet keeps glass shelves seated evenly and prevents doors from drifting or rubbing. Recheck level after moving the unit.
- Anchor where appropriate. Tall cabinets can tip if pulled or loaded unevenly. Follow the manufacturer’s anchoring guidance and use a suitable wall connection for your wall type.
- Install shelves before the figures. Fit supports securely, verify that each shelf is fully seated, and avoid forcing glass against a support.
- Load heavy items low and centered. Place dense pieces toward the center of a shelf and lower in the cabinet. Distribute the load instead of creating a heavy corner.
- Add figures from the back forward. Put rear-row pieces in place before front-row risers or figures, then test that every item can still be removed.
- Close the door and inspect clearances. Look for contact with glass, seals, shelf edges, and neighboring accessories. Reposition anything that touches or flexes.

Flat shelves waste vertical space because front figures can hide those behind them. Verify the exact dimensions, acrylic thickness, support points, and load rating before ordering. Compatibility depends on the cabinet’s internal ledges and the riser’s footprint; a product described as “Detolf compatible” may still fit differently across revisions or regional versions.
- Use a low riser for standard figures and reserve the remaining height for weapons or effect parts.
- Use a deeper riser only when it does not reduce the front-to-back clearance needed by the rear row.
- Keep heavy statues on the cabinet’s supported shelf rather than on a lightweight acrylic step unless the riser’s load rating explicitly permits it.
- Place risers so the door can close without touching the upper edge or the displayed figure.
Lighting: useful upgrade, not a fit requirement
Lighting improves visibility in a glass cabinet, especially when shelves shade the figures below. IKEA’s DETOLF description says, “You can easily brighten up your display objects as the glass-door cabinet is designed to include lighting.” Treat that as design compatibility, not proof that a particular light kit is included or that every strip will install cleanly.
The cited accessory guide lists flexible, dimmable COB LED strips for Detolf-style cabinets. The guide does not provide independent performance testing, so confirm brightness, power requirements, heat behavior, adhesive compatibility, and cable routing for the exact strip you choose.
Install lighting after the shelf plan
- Decide where the power cable will enter and exit without pinching against the door or glass.
- Test the strip temporarily before applying adhesive to ensure its bends match the frame and shelf arrangement.
- Keep LEDs and power supplies away from points where they can rub against moving glass or become trapped under a shelf.
- Check heat after the lights have run for an extended period. Stop using a strip if the frame, adhesive, or nearby plastic becomes unusually hot.
- Route cables so they do not interfere with leveling, anchoring, or shelf removal.
Dust sealing, stability, and long-term care
Dust control
A closed glass cabinet reduces dust compared with open shelving, but it is not hermetically sealed. Wipe the glass and frame before loading the figures, clean shelves during a planned rearrangement, and avoid placing the cabinet where airborne debris is constantly generated. A soft brush or air blower is safer for delicate joints than aggressive wiping across painted surfaces.

Sunlight and temperature
Direct sunlight can fade paint and soften some plastics over time. Position the cabinet away from strong sun where possible, and avoid placing hot lighting equipment against figure packaging or accessory parts. Keep the room environment reasonably stable rather than exposing the cabinet to abrupt heat and humidity changes.
Glass and hardware checks
- Inspect shelf supports whenever you move or reconfigure the cabinet.
- Replace chipped or cracked glass instead of continuing to load it.
- Tighten frame hardware according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not overtighten against glass.
- Lift the cabinet with enough people and support to keep the frame square.
- After relocation, recheck level, anchors, door alignment, and shelf seating before restoring the collection.
Common fit problems and practical fixes
The figure fits, but the weapon hits the shelf above
Measure the complete pose again, then create a taller bay by moving or removing one shelf. Do not bend the weapon or force the figure into a lower pose merely to preserve equal shelf spacing.
The base fits the width but not the depth
Check whether the cabinet door frame or rear support reduces the usable opening. If the base still exceeds the internal depth, rotate the display only if the pose remains intentional; otherwise assign the item to a deeper cabinet.
Two figures fit individually but not together
Account for their combined arm, cape, and weapon projections. Use a riser to separate sightlines only when it preserves removal clearance, or move one figure to another bay.
A vehicle consumes an entire shelf
That is a planning signal, not necessarily a failure. Give the vehicle a dedicated bay and place figures on the remaining shelves, or move to a deeper modular system if vehicles are a continuing part of the collection.

The shelf feels overloaded
Unload it, inspect the supports and glass, and redistribute dense pieces. Keep heavy objects centered and spread across the shelf. For resin or metal collections, obtain the current manufacturer’s load guidance instead of relying only on a third-party estimate.
The door will not open fully after placement
Measure the room in front of the hinges and remove nearby furniture or obstacles. A cabinet that cannot open fully is difficult to load safely and encourages users to twist figures through a narrow gap.
Which option fits different collection plans?
Mostly standard 7-inch figures
Start with a narrow glass tower with adjustable shelves. Use the normal shelf pattern for compact poses and reserve one taller bay for the occasional raised weapon or wing. Add small risers if rear figures disappear behind the front row.

Prioritize usable depth and shelf height over external appearance. A cabinet that is slightly wider or deeper may hold fewer nominal rows but display more of each figure without crowding.
Collections that include vehicles
Measure the largest vehicle first. If it needs most of a tower’s depth, choose a deeper modular or bookcase-style enclosure and use the remaining shelves for figures. Do not buy a tower based only on the height of the figures.
A growing collection
Consider stackable or expandable modular systems when you expect to add cabinets. Compare how modules connect, whether lighting can be extended, how doors align between units, and whether the finished stack can be anchored safely.
Frequent handling and posing
Prioritize door clearance, removable shelves, and easy access over maximum dust sealing. Leave hand room around each pose and avoid a layout that requires removing several figures to reach one in the back.

Bottom line for 7-inch action-figure displays
A tall glass cabinet with adjustable shelves remains the most balanced choice for ordinary 7-inch figures: it combines visibility, dust reduction, and flexible shelf planning in a compact footprint. Use the DETOLF measurements as a reference, not a promise that every pose will fit. When vehicles, oversized bases, or a rapidly expanding collection become the dominant constraint, choose a deeper modular system instead. The best case is the one whose measured interior, shelf supports, door clearance, and expansion path match your largest accessory—not merely the nominal height of your figures.
