The documented way to add disc playback to a compatible disc-free PS5 is Sony’s console-mounted CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive. It is not a generic USB optical drive. First check your console’s model number: the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not compatible with this add-on, while supported newer Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro are identified in Sony’s product and support information. Sony also requires an internet connection to pair the drive during setup.
Which disc drive works with a disc-free PS5?
Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive is the documented add-on for compatible PS5 consoles. It attaches to the console; Sony does not describe it as a standalone USB peripheral. The official setup and product information identify compatible model groups, but the lists are not identical across pages: support instructions name CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups, while the product listing specifies compatible CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. Check the exact model number against the current PlayStation compatibility information for your region before purchasing.
Check the console model number first
Do not rely only on whether the console is marketed as a “Digital Edition.” The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is identified by PlayStation as not supporting disc-based games or media. A separately sold drive does not make that model compatible. Newer compatible model groups are listed above; revisions and regional listings can differ, so verify the specific model rather than assuming all digital PS5 consoles accept the same accessory.

What can the CFI-ZDD1 play?
PlayStation describes the accessory as supporting PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray discs, as well as movie playback from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. Its support information also lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, and DVD formats. These are physical-disc capabilities; they do not turn the drive into extra game storage.
#1 Best Overall
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Does a USB disc drive work on PS5?
The official compatibility information identifies the CFI-ZDD1 as the attachable disc-drive option; it does not document a generic USB optical drive as a substitute. USB extended storage is a separate feature for storing game and app data. PlayStation says PS5 games stored on USB extended storage cannot be played directly from that storage, and a USB storage drive does not provide optical-disc playback.
What to expect during setup
An internet connection is required to pair the CFI-ZDD1 with the console during setup. PlayStation states this requirement in its product information. Make sure the console can connect to the internet when you install and pair the accessory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose without mistaking a USB drive for the right product
- Read the PS5 model number. Confirm it against the current official compatibility listing for your region. Do not buy the add-on for the CFI-1000 Digital Edition.
- Look for the exact accessory model. The documented product is Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1, designed to attach to compatible consoles.
- Confirm your intended discs are supported. The listed uses include PS5 games, supported PS4 game discs, and specified Blu-ray and DVD movie formats.
- Plan for online setup. An internet connection is required for initial pairing.
Official guidance documents one supported add-on path, not a set of interchangeable external drives. A ranked list of generic USB optical drives would imply compatibility that the cited PlayStation information does not establish. Check local product documentation for current compatibility, availability, and price before buying.
