How ARK: Survival Ascended mods work in 2026
ASA mods are distributed through CurseForge, not Steam Workshop. Current 2026 server guides describe a model in which the server administrator selects the mods and a connecting client automatically downloads the server’s required files. Players therefore generally do not subscribe manually through Steam. Verify the workflow against the current in-game and hosting interfaces before a public launch.
The practical rule is simple: treat the server’s mod list as the source of truth. Every player must receive the same mod identifiers and versions, and the server must restart successfully with that list. A client that has an old copy, a server that updated only half its stack, or a mod that no longer supports the current ASA build can all produce connection failures or missing creatures.

Creature-focused picks in detail
Shiny! Dinos Ascended: the best first download for variety
Shiny! Dinos Ascended is the strongest starting point when you like the existing ASA ecosystem but want exploration to feel less predictable. It adds Shiny variants to wild creatures rather than replacing the whole roster. The listed system contains more than 40 colour sets and ability themes such as Frozen, Burning, Spectral, Fathomless and Pygmy. Those names imply distinct encounters: a rare spawn may be visually obvious, mechanically dangerous, or both.
The pack is also relevant after taming. Current descriptions say tamed Shinies receive boosted stats, which can make a lucky find materially better than an ordinary specimen. That is attractive for single-player and cooperative PvE, but it can undermine a carefully tuned PvP economy. Decide whether boosted Shinies should be rare prizes, disabled for competitive play, or accepted as part of the server’s progression before advertising the server.

Paleo ARK: Evolution Pack 1, Apex Predators
Pack 1 concentrates on two creatures that define late-game combat: the Rex and Giganotosaurus. It reworks their designs and behavior rather than merely adding a colour mutation. One current list identifies it as the most popular Paleo pack, while another notes that existing saddles convert automatically. That conversion can reduce the pain of moving an established tribe to the pack, but you should still test a copy of your save because saddle conversion is a high-impact change for breeding lines, blueprints and stored equipment.
This is the sensible Paleo choice for a server whose players already have a base, breeding program and established maps. It improves the creatures people already understand without committing you to a full overhaul. Check whether the new abilities, damage values and saddle behavior fit your intended boss progression before installing it on a long-running cluster.
Paleo ARK: Evolution Pack 3, Hard Hitting Herbivores
Pack 3 adds EVO versions of the Therizinosaurus and Brontosaurus. That pairing targets two different roles: the Therizinosaurus is a versatile combat and harvesting mount, while the Brontosaurus is a giant transport and area-control herbivore. A server using this pack should review any existing taming, breeding and boss strategies that depend on vanilla stats.

There is an important timing issue. A 2026 guide listed 30 September 2026 as the scheduled date for Wildcard’s own Therizinosaurus update. The scheduled date has passed, but no official confirmation that the release arrived on time was available. Compare your installed ASA build and patch notes with the EVO pack’s current CurseForge compatibility information; do not assume the mod is still the only source of an enhanced Therizinosaurus.
Moro’s Indomitable Duo
Moro’s Indomitable Duo adds the Moro Rex and Moro Raptor, each with its own model and animations. The appeal is immediacy: you receive two clearly distinct predators instead of a broad but shallow reskin system. A 2026 guide reports that both spawn on every map, which makes the pack easier to deploy on a multi-map cluster than a map-locked creature mod.
“Every map” should still be treated as a setting to verify. Spawn containers, rates, biome rules and map updates can change how often a creature appears. On a private server, test a fresh area or use your approved creature-finding method before concluding that a missing Moro creature is a mod failure.
ARK Additions
ARK Additions is aimed at players who want creatures that look and behave as though they could have shipped as official DLC. Current lists specifically mention Deinosuchus and Acrocanthosaurus. That positioning makes it a good middle ground between a small creature pack and a fantasy overhaul: the roster expands, but the world can still feel recognisably ARK.
No complete current roster is published in the available listing, so treat the named creatures as examples rather than an exhaustive catalogue. Review the live mod description, spawn rules and ASA version number before planning a progression path around any particular species.
Pyria: Mythos Evolved
Pyria: Mythos Evolved is the outlier for players who want mythology rather than ecological realism. It follows the original ARK’s Pyria idea and is described as adding phoenixes, krakens and chimeras. These creatures can provide memorable boss hunts and collection goals, but they also change the visual and mechanical identity of a standard map more dramatically than Shiny, Paleo or Moro.

Choose Pyria for a deliberately fantastical server. If your goal is “vanilla ARK, but with better dinosaurs,” start with one of the smaller packs instead.
Choose one overhaul, not several
Overhauls alter enough systems that stacking two or three usually creates conflicting creature classes, progression tables, spawn entries or balance assumptions. A 2026 CurseForge-oriented server guide specifically recommends selecting a single overhaul. Add creature-specific or quality-of-life mods only after confirming that the overhaul supports them.

When Primal Chaos makes sense
Pick Primal Chaos for a high-energy PvE or role-playing cluster where unusual abilities and boss variants are the point. Do not present it as a carefully balanced competitive ruleset. If tribes need predictable damage, tame values and boss timers, Ark Supreme is the safer starting comparison.
When Ark Supreme makes sense
Ark Supreme is the middle option. Each vanilla dinosaur receives a distinct ability set, but the available description characterises it as the more balanced overhaul. That makes it suitable for a server that wants meaningful creature identity without abandoning familiar maps and progression entirely.
When Astraeos Ascended makes sense
Astraeos Ascended is the choice when a new map is an advantage, not an inconvenience. Its creatures are tuned for that map, so evaluate it as a complete setting. Moving only selected creatures into an unrelated map may remove the environmental and progression context the overhaul expects.
Quality-of-life mods that support a creature stack
Dino Storage V2
Dino Storage V2 is recommended in current lists as both a convenience and a server-performance measure. Stored dinosaurs are not actively simulated, reducing the number of living entities the server must process while they are safely put away. It is especially useful for breeders, traders and large tribes that otherwise keep rows of creatures loaded around a base.

Before deployment, confirm how the mod handles inventories, cryopod-like transfers and backups on your host. Storage systems are infrastructure: a corrupted save or an interrupted conversion can affect more than one tame.
Dino Depot (CurseForge 942024)
Dino Depot is a modern cryopod alternative. It stores creatures in Dinoballs and provides full stat tooltips, making it useful when you are comparing breeders or checking a newly captured Shiny. The detailed tooltips are the main differentiator from a simple storage container: players can inspect a stored creature without repeatedly deploying it.
Awesome SpyGlass
Awesome SpyGlass is close to essential on a serious taming or breeding server because it lets you inspect creature statistics before committing resources. Pair it with a creature pack when the mod adds unfamiliar abilities or unusual stat distributions. Decide in advance whether the information should be available in PvP; revealing every wild creature’s exact values can remove scouting and taming uncertainty.

Kraken’s Better Dinos makes vanilla creatures smarter and more useful while aiming to change balance less than a full overhaul. It is a natural companion for a mostly vanilla server, but it can overlap with Paleo packs or an overhaul that already rewrites the same species. Test one representative creature from each overlapping mod before enabling the complete stack.

These are starting configurations, not guaranteed compatibility matrices. A mod that looks independent can still edit the same spawn containers, creature classes or progression entries as another mod.
How to add dino mods to an ASA server
- Back up the world and configuration. Save the map, player data, tribe data and current configuration before changing the mod list. Keep a copy outside the host’s automatic rotation.
- Record the exact mod identifiers. Use the CurseForge entries for the desired packs: Shiny! Dinos Ascended 928548, Paleo Pack 1 970540, Paleo Pack 3 1382641, Moro’s Indomitable Duo 928824 and Dino Depot 942024. Record the current version shown by CurseForge as well as the numeric ID.
- Choose one overhaul, if any. Select Primal Chaos, Ark Supreme or Astraeos Ascended. Do not put multiple overhaul packages into the same initial test.
- Add the mods in the server’s CurseForge mod configuration. Hosting panels use different labels, but the operation is the same: enter the IDs or select the matching CurseForge records, save the list and apply the change.
- Restart and watch the complete startup log. Wait for the server to finish loading every mod. A clean process exit is not enough; look for failed dependency, version, spawn-registration or asset messages.
- Join with a test account. Let the client obtain the server’s required files, then check the main menu, map load, creature spawns, inventories and existing tames. Use a disposable save or a copy of the production save for conversion tests.
- Promote only after a rollback test. Confirm that the backup restores, that a player can connect with the final list and that the server remains stable through a second restart.
Compatibility, load order and update discipline
- Check the ASA game version and each CurseForge version together. “Works on ASA” is not a permanent claim; a game update can invalidate a previously stable asset or class.
- Keep the server and clients synchronized. The connecting client must obtain exactly the files the server requests. Remove stale local copies if the client reports a mismatched version.
- Install the overhaul first in a staging environment. Add creature packs and quality-of-life tools one at a time. Restart and test after each addition so a failure has a known cause.
- Expect edits to collide. Paleo, Better Dinos and an overhaul can all touch vanilla creature classes. If two mods change the same dinosaur, determine which behavior the server actually loads instead of assuming the features merge.
- Protect long-running saves. Creature replacement and saddle conversion can alter existing inventories, breeders and spawns. Never update a production cluster without a tested rollback point.
- Review map scope. A creature reported to spawn on every map may still depend on map-specific spawn containers or administrator configuration. Astraeos Ascended’s creatures are specifically tuned for its own map.
Troubleshooting common failures
The client cannot join after the server updated
Compare the server’s active IDs and versions with the client’s downloaded files. Restart the game so the automatic download can complete, then remove an outdated local mod copy if the launcher or in-game browser offers that option. If the server changed several mods at once, roll back to the last known-good list and reintroduce updates individually.

A new creature does not appear
First confirm that the mod loaded without asset or spawn-registration errors. Then check the map’s spawn container and any administrator-adjusted rates. Travel to an area that has not been loaded recently or perform the server’s normal wild-creature refresh procedure. A missing Moro creature, for example, is not proof that the pack failed; the reported “every map” behavior still needs to be validated against the current map and configuration.
Existing Rexes or saddles behave differently
Paleo Pack 1 is reported to convert existing saddles automatically, but conversion is exactly the kind of change that should be tested on a copy. Compare armor values, blueprints, inventories and breeding records before updating the live cluster. If the conversion is unacceptable, restore the backup rather than trying to repair dozens of items manually.
The server becomes unstable after adding an overhaul
Remove all optional creature and behavior mods, leaving only the overhaul, and test a clean restart. If the issue remains, compare the overhaul version with the current ASA build and contact the mod’s support channel with the startup log. If stability returns, re-add supporting mods one at a time; the conflicting edit is then identifiable. Never solve an overhaul conflict by adding a second overhaul.
Players report excessive lag around bases
Move idle tames into Dino Storage V2 or Dino Depot and compare entity counts before and after. Storage can reduce active simulation, but it cannot fix a damaged save, an overloaded host or a script loop. Check the server log and host metrics before changing creature stats.
What to check before you commit
- Does the mod’s current CurseForge version explicitly support your ASA build?
- Are you adding a variant pack, a creature pack, a quality-of-life tool or an overhaul? Mixing categories is possible; confusing their scope is not.
- Have you selected only one overhaul?
- Will boosted Shiny stats or new abilities change your PvP or boss rules?
- Have you tested saddle conversion, existing tames and breeding saves?
- Can every player download the same files and connect after a clean restart?
- Do you have a verified backup and a rollback procedure?

Start with Shiny! Dinos Ascended if you want the largest improvement to everyday exploration. Choose Paleo Pack 1 for redesigned Rexes and Giganotosaurus, Pack 3 for EVO Therizinosaurus and Brontosaurus, or Moro’s Indomitable Duo for two signature predators. Add ARK Additions or Pyria only when their creature style matches your server.
