DEWALT FLEXVOLT is the clearest battery-system choice for a collection that includes compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. FLEXVOLT packs automatically switch voltage when moved between supported tools, so one battery family can serve both platforms. The right capacity depends on the tool, runtime requirement, size and handling—not on a universal “best” rating. DEWALT’s current U.S. system pages list 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah FLEXVOLT options.
What to buy for a mixed 20V MAX and 60V MAX collection
Choose a DEWALT FLEXVOLT battery rather than a conventional 20V MAX-only pack when you need one battery family for both voltage platforms. DEWALT describes FLEXVOLT as using patented technology that automatically switches voltage when the pack is moved between compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools.
That recommendation has an important limit: compatibility is not a blanket promise for every DEWALT product ever made. Check the manual and compatibility chart for the exact tool, battery and charger, particularly with older tools. A standard 20V MAX battery should not be treated as a power source for a 60V MAX tool; the cross-platform direction established here is a compatible FLEXVOLT pack used in compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools.
There is no evidence that one capacity is best for every collection. A 6Ah pack may be easier to handle on a compact tool, while a 12Ah or 15Ah pack may reduce battery changes on a demanding 60V MAX tool. How FLEXVOLT voltage switching works
One pack, two supported tool platforms
FLEXVOLT batteries are designed to recognize the requirements of supported tools and switch voltage configuration accordingly. In a compatible 20V MAX tool, the pack operates as a 20V MAX battery; in a compatible 60V MAX tool, it supplies the higher platform voltage. This is why a FLEXVOLT pack can be moved between the two platforms without a manual voltage selector.
The feature applies to the battery family and the specific tools that DEWALT identifies as compatible. It does not make every 20V MAX tool a 60V tool, and it does not make every FLEXVOLT pack suitable for every product regardless of the manual.
MAX labels are maximum initial voltage
DEWALT’s MAX labels describe maximum initial battery voltage. The nominal operating voltage is lower, as DEWALT notes on its system pages. Therefore, “20V MAX” and “60V MAX” should be read as platform names, not as a claim that a battery continuously operates at those exact numbers under every condition.

120V MAX listings do not change the buying decision
The product pages for the DCB606, DCB609, DCB612 and DCB615 also list compatibility with 120V MAX tools. That additional listing indicates the packs belong to DEWALT’s broader FLEXVOLT family; it does not mean a mixed 20V/60V collection needs a separate 120V battery or that every tool in the family accepts every pack. Use the individual product documentation for any 120V MAX application.
FLEXVOLT capacity options compared
DEWALT’s current U.S. 60V system page lists four capacities. Capacity is expressed in amp-hours, but the practical result depends on the tool’s power draw, operating mode and work conditions. The table identifies what DEWALT states for the named examples; it is not an independent runtime ranking.

Which FLEXVOLT size fits your work?
6Ah DCB606: the compact end of the FLEXVOLT range
The DCB606 is the lower-capacity option among the four named packs. It is a logical starting point when your 60V MAX tools are used for shorter sessions, when several spare packs are acceptable, or when tool balance matters more than maximum time between changes. It also lets a 20V MAX collection share the same FLEXVOLT family.

9Ah DCB609: an intermediate capacity with a stated energy figure
DEWALT lists the DCB609 at 180 watt-hours per pack. That figure is useful for comparing stored energy within the manufacturer’s specifications, but it is not a promise of a fixed number of minutes. Actual runtime changes with the tool, material, load, temperature and operating pattern.
This capacity can make sense when 6Ah packs require too many changes but the largest packs would add more size than your work justifies. Confirm the tool’s approved battery list and assess whether the pack’s physical form is comfortable for the job.
12Ah DCB612: a strong all-round choice for heavy mixed use
The DCB612 is often the most practical middle ground for a collection containing regularly used 60V MAX tools and high-demand 20V MAX equipment. DEWALT states that, when used with 20V MAX tools, it provides “up to 6x the runtime” compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah pack. That is a manufacturer claim with a specific comparator, not an independent test and not a guarantee that every tool or task will achieve six times the runtime.
DEWALT also states that the DCB612 works with all 20V MAX chargers. Even with that statement, verify the charger model and the current compatibility chart before relying on a particular charging setup.

15Ah DCB615: maximum listed capacity
The DCB615 offers the largest listed capacity in this lineup. It is most defensible when minimizing battery changes is a priority on compatible high-demand tools and when the added physical size is acceptable. The available specifications do not establish how much longer it runs than a 12Ah pack in a given tool, nor do they provide a comparative weight figure.
For compact 20V MAX tools, a 15Ah pack can be more battery than the task requires. Compare the tool’s balance, clearance and carrying position—not only the amp-hour number—before standardizing on this size.
Runtime: what the published numbers do and do not tell you
The six-times claim has a defined baseline
DEWALT’s “up to 6x the runtime” statement for the DCB612 is specifically a comparison with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery in DEWALT 20V MAX tools. “Up to” describes a maximum stated by the manufacturer, not a result every user should expect. The claim does not establish six times the runtime in 60V MAX tools, nor does it compare the DCB612 with the 6Ah, 9Ah or 15Ah FLEXVOLT models.
Watt-hours are not a stopwatch
The DCB609’s 180 watt-hours describe stored energy under the manufacturer’s specification. Runtime requires the tool’s power demand over time. A saw cutting continuously, a drill used intermittently and a blower operated at different settings can consume energy at very different rates. Use watt-hours to understand relative capacity, then use your own work pattern and the tool manual to plan spares and charging.
Why no universal capacity ranking is justified
No controlled test covering all four capacities and a representative set of 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools is established here. Consequently, it would be inaccurate to claim that the 15Ah pack always lasts a particular number of hours, that the 12Ah pack is always the best value, or that one model is always lighter. Treat manufacturer figures as model-specific specifications and claims.
Charger compatibility and the check you should perform
What DEWALT states
DEWALT’s DCB612 product information states compatibility with all 20V MAX chargers. DEWALT’s DCB615 page makes the same charger-compatibility statement for that model. The DCB118 charger manual covers 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs and directs the owner to its compatibility chart.

Verify the exact combination
- Identify the complete battery model printed on the pack, such as DCB606, DCB609, DCB612 or DCB615.
- Identify the charger model from its label, not merely from its appearance or the voltage printed on the battery.
- Open the charger manual and compatibility chart and confirm that the exact pack is listed.
- Check the tool manual for the battery models approved for that tool, especially if the tool is an older 20V MAX or 60V MAX product.
- If the documentation conflicts with a retailer description or an informal compatibility list, follow the current DEWALT manual and chart.
This process prevents a broad statement such as “all FLEXVOLT batteries charge everywhere” from being applied beyond the models and chargers DEWALT actually specifies.

How to choose a capacity for a mixed collection
