The best device depends on whether you want to mirror your whole iPhone screen or cast video from a compatible app. For both AirPlay streaming and full-screen mirroring, Apple TV 4K is a dedicated receiver option. But first check whether your TV already supports AirPlay 2; if it does, you may not need another device. For compatible-app casting, Google Cast hardware is another option, while an iPhone HDMI adapter provides a wired connection.
Choose by what you want to put on the TV
“Casting” can mean sending a video from an app or showing the entire iPhone display. Those are different tasks, and the distinction matters when choosing a receiver.
- Full-screen mirroring and AirPlay video: AirPlay can stream video and photos or mirror the iPhone screen to Apple TV 4K and supported AirPlay 2 TVs. See Apple’s AirPlay instructions for iPhone.
- Media from compatible apps: Google Cast lets supported iPhone apps send media to compatible receivers. App support is required; Google’s guidance describes app casting, not mirroring the entire iPhone screen. See Google’s instructions for casting from a Chromecast-enabled app.
- A cable connection: A compatible Apple Digital AV/HDMI adapter connects the iPhone to a TV. The adapter must match the phone’s connector, and some protected video requires an HDCP-compatible connection. See Apple’s adapter guidance.

Check whether your TV already supports AirPlay
An AirPlay 2-enabled TV can receive iPhone video, photos, and screen mirroring without a separate streaming box. Apple’s AirPlay-to-TV guidance says the iPhone and receiver should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for video and photo streaming. Since support varies by model, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact TV before buying a receiver.
When Apple TV 4K is the right pick
Choose Apple TV 4K if your TV lacks AirPlay and you want a dedicated receiver for both AirPlay streaming and full-screen mirroring. Connect the Apple TV to an HDMI input, put it and the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network, then use AirPlay from a video app or Screen Mirroring in Control Center. App support is not universal: Apple notes that some video apps may not support AirPlay. If a particular service will not send video, check whether it offers a native app on the TV or streaming device instead.
When Google Cast hardware makes sense
Google Cast hardware suits viewers whose iPhone apps include a Cast control and who want to send media from those apps to the TV. It is not the choice to make on the assumption that it will mirror the entire iPhone screen: the cited Google instructions cover casting from compatible apps.

For discovery, connect the iPhone and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network, open a Cast-enabled app, tap its Cast button, and select the destination. On iOS 14 or later, allow Local Network access so the app can discover Cast devices. Google also lists iOS 17.0 or later for setting up Google streaming devices with Google Home, and HDCP 2.2 as a requirement for 4K. These are setup and display requirements, not a promise that every app or title will stream in 4K. Details are on Google’s streaming-device requirements page.
Use an HDMI adapter for a wired connection
A wired connection avoids choosing a wireless receiver, but the adapter must fit the iPhone’s port. Apple says to select an adapter for USB-C or Lightning as appropriate and notes that some protected content requires an HDCP-compatible digital connection. Check the phone connector, adapter compatibility, TV HDMI input, and any content-protection requirement before relying on it. See Apple’s guidance on connecting an iPhone to a display.

Set up iPhone screen mirroring with AirPlay
- Connect the iPhone and Apple TV or AirPlay 2 TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- For video in an app, use the app’s AirPlay control and select the TV or Apple TV.
- To show the whole screen, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose the receiver.
- If the TV displays a passcode, enter it on the iPhone.
- To end mirroring, open Control Center and stop Screen Mirroring.
Apple’s AirPlay instructions cover streaming and mirroring. If an app does not offer AirPlay, that does not establish a fault with the receiver; the app may not support the feature.

- Want whole-screen mirroring and AirPlay? Use an AirPlay 2 TV you already own, or choose Apple TV 4K if your TV lacks AirPlay.
- Only need to send media from certain apps? Google Cast hardware can work if those iPhone apps support Cast.
- Prefer a cable? Choose an Apple Digital AV/HDMI adapter that matches the iPhone connector and verify HDCP needs for protected video.
Apple and Google’s cited support pages explain compatibility and setup, but do not establish comparative latency or reliability rankings. Treat the options as different ways to connect, not as a tested performance ranking.
