There is no single Bungie-approved graphics preset that makes Destiny 2 smooth on every PC. The dependable approach is to verify that the computer meets the published requirements, make sure the game uses the intended GPU, choose a sensible frame-rate ceiling, leave NVIDIA Reflex at its supported default unless you have a reason to change it, and adjust only one in-game option at a time while watching Destiny 2’s built-in FPS counter. Bungie’s documentation describes these controls and troubleshooting steps, but it does not provide a current low-, mid-, and high-end preset or a benchmark proving that one setting combination is universally best.

Start with the checks that matter most

Settings cannot compensate for hardware that is below the game’s baseline or for a laptop running Destiny 2 on an unsuitable adapter. Before changing image-quality options, establish what the PC is actually doing.

Compare your PC with Bungie’s requirements

Use Bungie’s live Destiny 2 on PC System Requirements table to compare your processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage and operating-system details with the minimum and recommended configurations. The page lists 6 GB of RAM as minimum and 8 GB as recommended. Those figures are requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate, frame-time consistency or resolution.

Bungie says laptop configurations are not officially supported. A laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum may still be able to run the game, but its result depends on cooling, power mode, the graphics adapter actually selected and the limits of its mobile hardware. Treat the requirements page as a baseline check rather than a target for high-refresh play.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Make a quick pre-tuning checklist

  • Record the exact CPU, GPU, RAM amount and Windows version. Use the model numbers, not just a family name such as “Core i5” or “RTX.”
  • Check that the game is installed on a drive with adequate free space and that Windows is not reporting storage or update errors.
  • Connect a laptop to AC power and select its normal performance power mode before comparing results. Battery-saving behavior can change the adapter and clock limits while you are testing.
  • Close downloads, browser tabs with video playback and other workloads so they do not change the baseline between tests.
  • Write down the display resolution, display mode, current cap and Reflex state. A result is meaningful only when those conditions are repeatable.

These checks do not create extra performance by themselves. They prevent you from mistaking a power or hardware-selection problem for a graphics-setting problem.

Confirm which GPU Destiny 2 is using

A PC with integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card can launch the game on the lower-power adapter. That can produce poor performance even when a capable GPU is installed. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or select Destiny 2, choose Options, select High performance, and save the choice if that option is available on your installation. You can then verify the active adapter with Windows’ graphics information or your GPU control software.

Bungie’s current known-issues guidance calls out crashes in demanding environments on affected Intel 12th-generation Iris laptop systems and recommends selecting the discrete GPU and High Performance for Destiny 2 in Windows Graphics Settings. That is a documented mitigation for that situation, not a guarantee that forcing a discrete adapter fixes every hybrid-graphics problem. See the complete guidance in Destiny 2 Known Issues and Vital Information.

Use a repeatable observation point

Choose one repeatable activity before tuning: the same patrol area, a familiar strike encounter or another scene that regularly causes a dip. Stand in the same location, perform the same movement and note the FPS counter and whether camera motion feels even. A single maximum-FPS reading is less useful than observing the lowest-feeling moments and the consistency of frame delivery.

  • Change one setting or one group of closely related settings at a time.
  • Play the same scene long enough for the result to settle instead of judging the loading screen.
  • Record the setting, resolution, frame-cap value and observed behavior so you can undo a change.
  • Prefer stable delivery over a higher counter that fluctuates sharply.
  • Repeat a test after a game update; a patch can alter performance even when your settings are unchanged.

Choose a frame-rate cap deliberately

Bungie documents frame-cap behavior through the game’s CVARS file. The guide says a frame-cap value of 0 restores the default cap of 200 frames per second. A value above the expected frame-rate range, such as 10000, fully uncaps the frame rate. The 200-FPS figure is a configuration default, not a benchmark or a recommendation that every PC should pursue.

What each cap strategy means

Choice What Bungie documents When to consider it Important limitation
Value 0 Restores the default 200-FPS cap. You want the documented default after experimenting. It does not ensure that the computer can sustain 200 FPS.
A custom ceiling A lower or otherwise chosen limit can be entered in CVARS. You want a ceiling your system can hold more consistently. Bungie does not publish one universally optimal number.
A value above expected output, such as 10000 Fully uncaps the frame rate. You are diagnosing whether the cap itself is limiting output. Uncapping is not documented as a stability or smoothness improvement for all systems.

How to test a cap without chasing numbers

  1. Use the in-game FPS counter and your repeatable test scene.
  2. Start with the current cap and note the usual and lowest-feeling readings.
  3. If the game is consistently below the ceiling, lowering the cap may reduce swings between high and low output; choose a value based on what your PC actually sustains rather than on the panel’s maximum refresh rate.
  4. Change only the cap, relaunch if the game requires it, and repeat the same scene.
  5. Keep the result that feels more consistent. If the change makes behavior worse, restore the prior value.

A cap is a control for consistency, not a guarantee of a particular frame time. If your system alternates between a very high reading in quiet areas and deep dips in combat, a realistic ceiling can make those changes less distracting. If the game already holds a stable result, lowering the ceiling may only reduce unused headroom. Conversely, uncapping can be useful as a diagnostic comparison, but it can also increase power use, heat or fan noise without improving the moments that matter.

Bungie’s CVARS guide explicitly says modifying CVARS is generally not suggested and is done at the player’s discretion. Make a backup before editing, change only the entry you understand, and avoid copying a large block of undocumented values from an internet post.

Set NVIDIA Reflex according to your hardware and priority

On supported NVIDIA graphics cards with game-ready drivers, NVIDIA Reflex is enabled by default. Bungie documents the low_latency_mode CVAR values below:

Value Mode Documented behavior and trade-off
0 Off May slightly increase frame rate in some cases, but gives up Reflex’s latency behavior.
1 Default The normal supported Reflex mode and the documented default on compatible hardware.
2 Reflex with Boost Overrides GPU power-saving features and may provide a small additional latency reduction, with higher power use as the trade-off.

A practical decision rule

Leave Reflex at its default on a compatible NVIDIA system unless you are troubleshooting a specific issue or have measured a reason to prefer another mode. Choose Boost when minimizing input latency is more important than power saving and the extra power draw is acceptable. Test Off only when you are comparing frame rate or diagnosing a problem; a small FPS increase can come at the cost of responsiveness.

Boost is not a universal “more FPS” switch. Because it overrides GPU power-saving features, it can raise energy use and heat. On a laptop, that may interact with the machine’s thermal limits, so compare a sustained scene rather than a short burst immediately after launch. Do not force these values on unsupported hardware. Bungie’s explanations and the default behavior apply to supported NVIDIA GPUs and drivers. The full reference is NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency Guide for Destiny 2 PC.

Tune image quality with a controlled method

The official Bungie pages do not identify a current ranking of Destiny 2’s individual graphics-menu options, nor do they publish frame-rate gains for low-, medium- or high-end systems. Current option names and their performance cost can also change with game updates. For that reason, use the options shown in your own build rather than applying a supposedly universal preset.

Work from the result you need

  • If the counter is high but motion still feels uneven, test a frame cap before reducing image quality.
  • If the counter is below your desired ceiling in heavy scenes, reduce one visible quality option at a time and compare the same scene.
  • If the game is already at a stable ceiling, keep image quality and avoid lowering settings merely to produce a larger unused number.
  • If a setting changes clarity, visibility or the appearance of distant objects, decide whether the performance benefit is worth that gameplay cost.
  • Do not assume that the lowest preset is automatically the smoothest choice; a change can shift load between the CPU and GPU, and only your repeatable test can show the result.

Use an A/B procedure

  1. Write down the current resolution, display mode, frame cap, Reflex mode and graphics values.
  2. Change one option, then revisit the same activity and camera path.
  3. Watch for both the normal reading and the dips that occur during effects, combat or dense areas.
  4. Keep the change only if it improves consistency without an unacceptable image-quality loss.
  5. After several changes, retest the complete combination because interactions can make the final result differ from an isolated change.

This method produces a profile for your hardware and current game build, not a claim that the same values are best for every player. It also avoids presenting an unverified toggle as a Bungie recommendation.

Keep overlays and capture tools from interfering

Bungie’s compatibility guidance warns that some overlays, including framerate and statistics overlays, may not be compatible with Destiny 2. The built-in FPS counter is therefore the safer first measurement tool. If performance falls only when a third-party application is running, disable features that inject an overlay or hook into the game; if the problem remains, close the application and test again.

Capture options by display mode

Display mode Capture methods Bungie documents
Exclusive fullscreen Hardware capture, NVIDIA ShadowPlay or AMD ReLive.
Windowed modes OBS or XSplit screen capture and window capture.

Capture compatibility is separate from performance tuning. Turn recording off while establishing a baseline, then add the capture method appropriate to your display mode and retest. If the frame rate changes, you have isolated an application or capture interaction rather than a graphics-menu setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some utilities offer several features under one switch. Disable the overlay, statistics display, recording hook or other injecting feature individually when possible, so you know which function causes the conflict. Bungie’s guidance does not promise that every third-party combination will work, so treat a clean test with no extra hooks as the reference point.

Bungie maintains the detailed matrix in Destiny 2 PC and Third-Party Application Feature Compatibility.

Reset CVARS when a custom change causes trouble

If key bindings, graphics or another setting starts causing errors after customization, Bungie says deleting CVARS.xml should be the first troubleshooting step. This removes custom player settings and lets the game regenerate defaults.

  1. Close Destiny 2 completely.
  2. Open \Users\USER_NAME\Appdata\Roaming\Bungie\DestinyPC\prefs\, replacing USER_NAME with your Windows account folder.
  3. Make a backup copy of CVARS.xml if you want to preserve it for diagnosis, then delete the active file.
  4. Launch Destiny 2. The game regenerates a fresh file with default settings.
  5. Reapply changes one at a time, testing after each change rather than restoring an entire unverified configuration.

Resetting CVARS also resets custom key bindings and other player settings, so note anything you need to recreate. Bungie additionally recommends keeping the operating system and graphics drivers updated while troubleshooting. If Windows hides the AppData folder, enable hidden items in File Explorer rather than creating a second preferences folder; the location must be the one used by your Windows account.

Use a symptom-based troubleshooting path

Destiny 2 appears to use integrated graphics

  • Check Windows Graphics settings and assign Destiny 2 to High performance when a discrete adapter is present.
  • Confirm the laptop is connected to AC power and not restricted by a battery-saving mode.
  • Test again with overlays and capture applications disabled.
  • For Intel 12th-generation Iris laptop problems in high-demand environments, follow Bungie’s specific discrete-GPU mitigation in the known-issues article; do not assume it applies identically to every laptop generation.

Frame rate is high but motion is inconsistent

  • Compare a custom cap with the documented default behavior instead of immediately uncapping.
  • Observe the same demanding scene for frame-time consistency.
  • Remove third-party overlays and recording hooks before changing more graphics options.
  • Check whether the behavior begins only after the PC warms up; sustained testing is more useful than a one-minute launch result.

A CVARS edit created crashes or strange settings

  • Close the game and delete CVARS.xml from the Bungie preferences folder to regenerate defaults.
  • Update the operating system and graphics driver.
  • Reintroduce only the specific change you can identify, and keep a backup of the working file.

Performance drops only when an app is open

  • Disable the app’s overlay, statistics display or other feature that injects into the game.
  • If the drop continues, close the app and repeat the same test.
  • Use Bungie’s capture-by-display-mode guidance if recording is required.

The game looks blurry after experimenting

Do not compensate by importing a large settings file. First write down the current resolution and image-quality values, then compare one option at a time in a familiar scene. If you can no longer identify which change affected clarity, reset CVARS, relaunch, and rebuild a clean profile from the game’s current menu.

When settings are not enough

If the PC cannot hold a reasonable, consistent result after GPU selection, cap testing, overlay removal and measured graphics adjustments, compare the exact processor and graphics hardware with Bungie’s requirements before buying anything. The evidence available here supports only a conditional hardware path: a discrete graphics card may be necessary when integrated graphics are below the game’s needs. No particular GPU model or upgrade will guarantee a given frame rate, and the requirements page does not function as a modern high-FPS buying guide.

Complete the no-cost checks first. An upgrade decision should account for the system’s power supply, cooling, laptop upgrade limits and the resolution you intend to use, then be checked against the current Bungie table rather than an old forum recommendation. The official material does not establish a current price, model recommendation or expected FPS gain, so treat any purchase as a system-specific decision instead of a guaranteed fix.

What “best settings” means for your PC

For one player, the best profile is the one that preserves image quality while holding a stable ceiling. For another, it is a lower ceiling with fewer dips, or Reflex Boost for the lowest practical latency. Bungie documents the available CVARS behaviors, Reflex modes, hardware baselines and compatibility limits, but not a universal preset or controlled multi-PC performance comparison. Build your profile from the game’s current menu, measure it in the same scene, and keep only changes that improve the way your own system feels.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Destiny 2 FPS cap on PC?

There is no universal number in Bungie’s guidance. CVARS value 0 restores the documented default cap of 200 FPS, while a value such as 10000 fully uncaps the game. A custom ceiling can be preferable if your PC sustains it more consistently, but choose it from observation rather than from a generic recommendation.

Should I uncap Destiny 2?

Uncapping is useful for diagnosing whether the cap limits output, not proof that performance will become smoother. It can increase power use and fluctuation. Compare capped and uncapped behavior in the same scene and keep whichever delivers steadier motion.

Why is Destiny 2 using my integrated graphics?

Hybrid laptops can select the integrated adapter even when a discrete GPU is installed. In Windows Graphics settings, assign Destiny 2 to High performance, then verify the active adapter. Bungie specifically documents this mitigation for affected Intel 12th-generation Iris laptop issues; it is not a guarantee for every hybrid system.

Should NVIDIA Reflex be on, off or Boost?

On supported NVIDIA GPUs and game-ready drivers, the default mode is enabled. Reflex Off may slightly improve frame rate while sacrificing its latency behavior. Boost overrides power-saving features and may reduce latency slightly at higher power use. Leave the default in place unless your own test gives you a clear reason to change it.

Are laptop PCs supported?

Bungie says laptop configurations are not officially supported, although laptops meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements may be able to play. Cooling, power mode and GPU selection have a large effect on the result, so test on AC power and verify the intended adapter.

Which Destiny 2 graphics preset gives the most FPS?

Bungie’s current pages do not provide a tested low-, medium- and high-end preset or a comparative table of individual options. Use the settings visible in your build, change one option at a time, and judge the same demanding scene with the built-in counter.

What should I do if a CVARS edit breaks my settings?

Close the game and delete CVARS.xml from \Users\USER_NAME\Appdata\Roaming\Bungie\DestinyPC\prefs\. Relaunching regenerates defaults, but custom key bindings and other player settings are reset. Bungie says this should be the first troubleshooting step for problems caused by settings changes.

Can overlays reduce performance or cause problems?

Yes. Bungie warns that some framerate and statistics overlays may be incompatible. Disable injecting features and retest; if the issue remains, close the application. Use the built-in FPS counter for a clean baseline, and choose capture methods that match your display mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a new GPU?

Only consider an upgrade after confirming the current adapter, meeting the no-cost troubleshooting steps and comparing your exact hardware with Bungie’s live requirements. The documented guidance supports a discrete GPU when integrated graphics are inadequate, but it names no universal model, price or guaranteed frame-rate improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest first change for smoother performance?

Verify the requirements, assign Destiny 2 to the intended high-performance GPU, disable interfering overlays and establish a repeatable test scene before changing image-quality settings.

Will deleting CVARS.xml erase my key bindings?

Yes. The file reset regenerates defaults and removes custom key bindings and other player settings, so back up the file and record settings first.

Does a 200 FPS cap mean my PC should run at 200 FPS?

No. Bungie documents 200 FPS as the default cap value, not as a performance target or benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Reflex Boost a performance preset?

No. It is a latency-focused mode that overrides GPU power-saving features and may use more power; it is not guaranteed to increase FPS.

The Bottom Line

For smoother Destiny 2 performance, start with Bungie’s requirements and GPU-selection checks, then test a realistic frame cap, keep Reflex at its supported default unless latency or power needs justify a change, and tune graphics one option at a time with the built-in FPS counter. Remove overlay conflicts and reset CVARS if an edit causes trouble. Because Bungie publishes no universal preset or current multi-PC benchmark, the best settings are the profile that remains consistent on your hardware without sacrificing more image quality or power than you accept.
