The best defense when technology stocks are falling is usually a deliberate mix, not a wholesale switch into one “safe” asset. Match each dollar to its job: cash equivalents and Treasury bills for near-term spending and principal stability, diversified high-quality bonds for less equity concentration, and carefully sized consumer-goods or health-care stocks for sector diversification. Every choice has trade-offs, and none is guaranteed to rise when technology shares decline.
Investor.gov describes diversification as spreading money across investments and sectors, while the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warns that diversification cannot guarantee protection in a market drop. Your time horizon, liquidity needs, taxes, required income and tolerance for losses should determine the mix.
Define what “defensive” means for your portfolio
“Defensive” is a risk-management description, not a promise of outperformance. A defensive holding may lose less than a concentrated technology position, fluctuate less, or provide cash for spending while riskier assets recover. It can still decline in a recession, lose purchasing power to inflation or fail to keep pace with a long-term growth target.

The SEC’s investor education material says stocks, bonds, cash equivalents, certificates of deposit, money-market funds and U.S. Treasury securities are among the available building blocks. Investor.gov specifically uses consumer goods and health care as examples of sectors that can diversify technology exposure. The right choice depends on what the money must do and when it will be needed.

Money needed soon
Emergency reserves, a planned property purchase, tuition or withdrawals expected within the next few years generally belong in liquid, stable holdings. A temporary reduction in return potential can be preferable to selling shares after a technology-led decline to meet a bill.
Money with a medium-term horizon
For goals several years away, a diversified government or investment-grade bond allocation can reduce reliance on stock-market returns. Bonds are not risk-free: prices can fall when interest rates rise, issuers can default, and inflation can erode the value of payments.
Long-term retirement money
Long horizons can justify retaining some equity exposure even during a technology sell-off. Moving everything to cash after prices fall may lock in losses and create a reinvestment problem if markets recover before you buy back in. An allocation that you can hold through several market cycles is usually more useful than a theoretically safer mix that causes you to abandon your plan.

| Option | Capital stability | Expected return | Volatility | Inflation sensitivity | Interest-rate sensitivity | Liquidity | Credit risk | Tax treatment | Portfolio role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cash equivalents and Treasury bills | Highest relative stability among the choices, but not an absolute guarantee in every circumstance | Lowest return potential of the major categories described by the SEC | Very low price volatility when held as cash or to maturity | High: returns may lag rising prices | Low for an individual bill held to maturity; reinvestment risk remains | Generally high, subject to the account or security’s terms | Issuer and intermediary details matter; U.S. Treasury obligations have federal backing but are still subject to maturity and reinvestment considerations | Depends on account, jurisdiction and instrument; verify with a qualified tax professional | Emergency reserves, near-term spending and the capital-preservation portion of a plan |
| Diversified government or investment-grade bond funds | Usually steadier than stocks, but fund values can decline | Higher potential income than cash, with no fixed outcome | Low to moderate relative to equities, depending on duration and holdings | Moderate to high; fixed payments can lose real value | Meaningful, especially for longer-duration funds | Fund shares can generally be sold on market days, but the sale price is not guaranteed | Lower than high-yield debt when holdings are high quality, but defaults and downgrades remain possible | Varies by account, fund distribution and local rules | Diversify concentrated equity exposure and moderate overall volatility |
| Consumer-goods or health-care equities | Lower stability than cash or high-quality bonds because they remain stocks | Equity-like long-term potential; no defensive-sector premium is assured | Moderate to high and subject to broad market declines | Businesses may have some pricing power, but valuations and costs still matter | Indirect but real through valuation and financing costs | Usually high for listed shares, subject to market conditions | Company balance sheets, regulation, competition and operating risks | Depends on account, dividends, realized gains and jurisdiction | Reduce dependence on technology earnings drivers while preserving some equity exposure |
| Utilities and other income-oriented equities | Still equity-level risk; essential demand does not prevent losses | Equity return potential plus possible dividends; no universal advantage is established | Can be volatile when rates or financing costs change | Depends on regulation, allowed prices and operating costs | Often material because these companies can be capital-intensive and income-oriented | Usually high for listed shares | Company leverage, regulation and project financing | Depends on account and jurisdiction | An optional diversifier to analyze case by case, not a guaranteed shelter |
Cash equivalents and Treasury bills: the stability bucket
The SEC identifies savings deposits, certificates of deposit, Treasury bills, money-market deposit accounts and money-market funds as cash equivalents and describes this category as the safest major asset class, with the lowest return and inflation risk. That description is relative, not a guarantee that every product or provider is lossless.
When they fit
- Emergency reserves that must be available without relying on stock prices.
- Expenses due within the maturity period of the bill or certificate.
- The portion of a portfolio that must preserve nominal value rather than maximize growth.
- A temporary parking place while you complete a written rebalancing plan, rather than an open-ended market-timing decision.
What Treasury bills do and do not solve
A Treasury bill has a stated maturity, so an investor who holds it to maturity can plan around its scheduled repayment. A bill bought before maturity can still have a changing market price, and a maturing bill must be reinvested at whatever rates are then available. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance therefore treats Treasury securities as subject to maturity, reinvestment and interest-rate considerations rather than as risk-free in every real-world sense.
Cash also has an opportunity cost. If inflation runs above the yield, purchasing power falls. Keeping a large balance for years can therefore create a different kind of risk from the price swings you were trying to avoid.
Liquidity checks
Before choosing a deposit, certificate, money-market fund or bill, check withdrawal rules, maturity dates, settlement timing, fees and the protection that applies to the specific account. “Cash equivalent” describes an investment characteristic; it does not make every account interchangeable.

Diversified government and investment-grade bonds
Bonds can reduce equity concentration and, according to Vanguard’s educational material, may provide more stability during stock-market downturns. A diversified fund can spread exposure across issuers and maturities instead of leaving you dependent on one company or one bond.
The risks to price explicitly
- Interest-rate risk: Existing bonds generally become less attractive when market rates rise, so their prices can fall. Longer-duration holdings are usually more sensitive.
- Credit risk: An issuer can weaken, default or be downgraded. A government-heavy fund and a corporate-heavy fund do not carry the same exposure.
- Inflation risk: Fixed coupons and principal payments may buy less in the future.
- Fund-price risk: A bond fund has no maturity date that guarantees your purchase price back. You receive the fund’s market value when you sell.
Why high-yield bonds are a poor fit for pure defense
The SEC distinguishes ordinary bonds from higher-risk “junk” bonds. High-yield debt can behave more like equities during an economic shock because investors demand compensation for greater credit risk. If your objective is to counter a technology concentration, adding a high-yield fund may replace one source of risk with another rather than create a true stabilizer.
How to select a bond allocation
- Set a target credit quality and avoid judging a fund by yield alone.
- Review duration or average maturity so the interest-rate exposure matches your horizon.
- Check whether the fund is concentrated in one issuer, industry or country.
- Decide whether you need predictable cash flows from individual bonds or the liquidity and diversification of a fund.
- Keep the role clear: volatility control, income, or a specific future liability. A single bond fund rarely does all three perfectly.
Consumer-goods and health-care stocks
Investor.gov names consumer goods and health care when explaining sector diversification. These businesses can have revenue drivers that differ from software, semiconductors, online advertising or other technology exposures. That difference can reduce the effect of one sector’s earnings disappointments on the whole portfolio.
Consumer goods and staples
Companies selling everyday products may benefit from recurring demand, but demand is not guaranteed and companies can face input-cost inflation, weak brands, retailer pressure, labor expenses and expensive valuations. A sector fund can also be narrowly concentrated in a handful of large companies, so inspect its holdings rather than assuming the label means broad diversification.

Health care
Health-care companies span insurers, providers, drug developers, device manufacturers and service businesses. Their risks differ substantially: clinical failures, reimbursement changes, regulation, patent expiry and litigation can affect individual holdings. Diversifying within the sector matters as much as moving out of technology.
Why defensive equities can still fall
Consumer-goods and health-care shares remain equities. A broad recession, forced selling, a valuation reset or company-specific problem can push them down alongside technology. The evidence does not establish a universal future outperformance rule, so use these sectors to diversify business drivers, not to promise protection.
Utilities and income-oriented shares: optional, not automatic
Market commentators often call utilities defensive because essential services can have steadier demand. The official sources cited for this guide do not establish a universal utilities advantage. If you consider them, examine leverage, regulatory decisions, dividend coverage, capital-spending requirements and sensitivity to interest rates. A high dividend does not remove the possibility of a falling share price or a reduced payout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild a response to an AI-heavy or technology-heavy portfolio
Start with exposure, not headlines. A portfolio can be technology-heavy even when no single technology stock is large because several funds may own the same companies. Investor.gov cautions that a narrowly focused fund may not provide meaningful diversification.

- List every holding and fund overlap. Group positions by sector, company, geography and asset class. Identify indirect technology exposure inside broad market funds.
- Separate goals by date. Put emergency needs and near-term withdrawals in the stability bucket before deciding how much equity risk you can retain.
- Choose a target mix. Write the intended percentages for cash equivalents, bonds and equities. Set a tolerance band that triggers review rather than reacting to each daily move.
- Reduce concentration gradually when appropriate. New contributions, dividends and scheduled rebalancing can shift the mix without requiring one all-at-once sale.
- Rebalance to the plan. Sell or redirect only enough to return to the target range. Document the reason, date and tax consequences.
- Review on a schedule. Reassess after a major life change, not merely because a news alert says technology stocks are down.
A dated allocation example, not a personal prescription
Vanguard Canada’s 2026 outlook describes a 40% stock/60% bond tactical mix as more conservative than a traditional 60/40 allocation and calls fixed income a modest defensive posture. That is one manager’s time-specific view, not a universal model or a recommendation for every investor. A person with high liquidity needs may hold more cash; someone with decades before withdrawals may require more growth assets.
Rebalancing without turning a sell-off into a tax mistake
Taxes and transaction costs can change the best implementation. Selling an appreciated position in a taxable account may realize a capital gain; selling at a loss can have local rules and timing consequences. Retirement and other sheltered accounts may operate differently. Because the treatment depends on account type and jurisdiction, obtain current advice before acting.
Use a written order of operations: fund emergency reserves, direct new money toward underweight assets, use tax-advantaged accounts when suitable, and sell only what is needed to restore the target. Do not assume that a cash move is reversible at the same price; markets can recover while you wait.

Common mistakes when technology stocks fall
- Replacing one concentration with another: Moving from a technology fund into a single consumer-staples or health-care fund leaves sector risk intact.
- Confusing low volatility with no loss: Bond funds and defensive stocks can decline, especially when rates rise or the market sells everything.
- Chasing the highest yield: Yield can signal credit, duration or business risk rather than safety.
- Ignoring inflation: A stable account balance can still lose purchasing power.
- Using a narrow “defensive” label: Read holdings, duration, credit quality, fees and geographic exposure.
- Making an unplanned all-cash exit: This can lock in losses, create reinvestment risk and derail a long-term allocation.
- Forgetting liquidity: A product that cannot be accessed when a bill arrives is not a suitable emergency reserve.
A practical decision checklist
- How much money must remain available within one year?
- What percentage of the portfolio is exposed to the same technology companies through multiple funds?
- What maximum temporary loss can you tolerate without abandoning the plan?
- Do your bonds have the credit quality and duration you intended?
- Are you accepting inflation risk in exchange for nominal stability?
- Will a sale create taxable gains, penalties or transaction costs?
- What specific event will cause you to rebalance, and how often will you review the plan?
What the evidence says about market declines
The SEC’s “Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing” (2009) notes that large-company stocks as a group have lost money on average about one out of every three years. That historical observation is a reminder that equity losses are normal, not evidence that a particular defensive sector will win next. The same SEC guidance says, “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.”
Investor.gov summarizes the investor trade-off this way: “An investor with a low risk tolerance favors investments that seek to maintain their original investment.” Vanguard likewise states that diversification can reduce the impact a single investment, sector or market decline may have on an overall portfolio. Those statements support a process—spread risk, match assets to goals and rebalance—rather than a forecast about the next technology move.
