There is no single best dedicated-server host for every buyer. The right choice depends on your workload, users’ location, CPU and memory needs, storage design, network capacity, management responsibility, support response and the fully normalized price. This guide compares OVHcloud, Hetzner, IONOS, Liquid Web and Leaseweb by those decision points rather than declaring a winner from unlike entry-level machines.
The five-provider slate is useful for an initial shortlist, but it is not a universal ranking. Inventory, prices, tax treatment, contract terms and available data-center regions change, and the exact Hetzner configuration still needs live-catalog verification. Treat provider workload labels and published specifications as starting points; confirm the SKU and contract for your country before ordering.
What dedicated server hosting actually gives you
A dedicated server is a physical machine reserved for one customer. You do not share its CPU cores, memory or local disks with neighboring virtual machines. IONOS describes installed resources as exclusive to one user, and Leaseweb describes its servers as physical and single-tenant.
Exclusive hardware does not make every service identical. Hosts differ in processor generation, core count, RAM ceiling, disk type, RAID choices, public and private network capacity, data-center location, DDoS mitigation, hardware replacement, operating-system management and support escalation. A low monthly quote can therefore represent a very different service from a higher quote.

- Expanding your network setup? These 10/32 rack mount screws work with any standard networking rack, cabinet, or enclosure.
- These screws are built from high-grade steel and coated with black zinc to prevent stripping. Because nothing will ruin your day faster than stripped screws.
- Rack rash? No thanks. Pre-attached nylon washers save time and keep your rack looking nice. Just bring a Philips screwdriver and let's get to it.
- Sometimes it's hard to get the screw in the hole. That's why we added self-guiding pilot points to speed up installation and prevent curse words.
- Big project? We've got groups of 25, 50, and 100 screws to choose from. Run into an issue with your rack? We've got ECHOGEAR pros available 7 days a week to help out.
Dedicated hosting is normally rented in a provider’s data center. Power distribution, cooling, rack space and upstream connectivity are included in the service rather than purchased separately. You remain responsible for deciding how the server is configured and operated unless your plan includes managed administration.
Start with the workload, not the provider name
Workload categories are useful for narrowing choices, but they are provider descriptions, not independent performance tests. Match the technical requirement behind the label to an exact server configuration.
| Workload | What to prioritize | Questions to ask before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Game servers and real-time applications | Consistent per-core performance, low latency to players, DDoS mitigation, fast recovery and predictable network routing | Where are your players? Is game-specific mitigation included? Are CPU resources dedicated at the advertised clock and can the host replace failed hardware quickly? |
| GPU rendering, AI or scientific workloads | Exact GPU model and memory, PCIe configuration, power envelope, driver support, storage throughput and remote-console access | Is the GPU in stock in your required region? Are drivers and virtualization supported? What happens if the card fails? |
| High-bandwidth services | Port speed, traffic policy, private-network capacity, DDoS scope and upstream redundancy | Is traffic genuinely unmetered on this SKU, or subject to a fair-use or port-speed limit? What is public versus private bandwidth? |
| Storage-heavy applications | NVMe or HDD type, usable capacity, RAID or other redundancy, sequential and random I/O requirements and disk replacement terms | Are disks hot-swappable? Is RAID hardware- or software-managed? Does the quoted capacity include parity and filesystem overhead? |
| Business databases and virtualization | Large memory capacity, CPU features, storage latency, redundant power, private networking and a clear maintenance policy | Does the processor support your hypervisor? Are licensing restrictions involved? Does the SLA cover network availability only or the complete service? |
| Managed web, commerce or compliance workloads | Operating-system patching, backups, monitoring, security assistance, escalation and documented maintenance windows | Who responds to an application incident? Are backups tested? Which tasks are included in managed service and which are billable? |
Five providers at a glance
The table separates published positioning from what still requires configuration-level verification. It is not a performance ranking.
| Provider | Published strengths or categories | Published details relevant to selection | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| OVHcloud | Advance, Game, Scale and High Grade bare-metal ranges | Range-specific memory ceilings, bandwidth and SLA figures; Game includes Anti-DDoS Game; Scale lists dual power supplies; High Grade lists hot-swap disks | Country inventory, exact SKU, traffic and port terms, certifications, support scope and total price |
| Hetzner | Dedicated root servers and current GPU-server announcements | The retrieved official page did not expose enough current plan detail for a like-for-like comparison | Live catalog, country, setup fee, RAM, storage, traffic, support and GPU availability |
| IONOS | Exclusive dedicated resources for web, mail, game, streaming, community and commerce use cases | Linux over encrypted SSH, Windows over RDP, KVM VNC recovery console; virtualization on specified Intel Scalable and AMD EPYC plans | Exact processor restrictions, hypervisor licensing, DDoS scope, backups, management and regional pricing |
| Liquid Web | Single-tenant hardware, customization, Linux or Windows and managed or self-managed tiers | Provider guide positions plans for demanding, high-traffic and compliance-sensitive workloads | Whether management covers your OS and applications, contract SLA definitions, support response and current quote |
| Leaseweb | General-purpose, high-performance, bandwidth, gaming, storage and GPU ranges | RAM, disks and bandwidth customization; monthly contracts; portal/API actions; described 24/7 technical support | Regional inventory, support boundaries, monitoring availability, traffic terms and replacement policy |
OVHcloud: broad bare-metal tiers with explicit range differences
OVHcloud divides its dedicated servers into ranges aimed at different operating profiles. On the US product page crawled in October 2026, the provider listed starting prices of $98 per month for Advance, $79 for Game, $689 for Scale and $1,263 for High Grade. These are volatile starting prices, may reflect limited inventory and do not establish the final cost for another country, configuration or contract.
| OVHcloud range | Provider-described fit | Published memory and network details | Published SLA label | Starting price shown on US page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advance | Small and medium businesses | Up to 1 TB memory; public bandwidth from 1 to 5 Gbps; private bandwidth from 1 to 6 Gbps | 99.95% | $98/month |
| Game | Video games and streaming platforms | Up to 256 GB memory; 1 Gbps public bandwidth; Anti-DDoS Game | 99.5% | $79/month |
| Scale | Complex, high-resilience infrastructure | Up to 1.5 TB memory; public bandwidth from 1 to 10 Gbps; dual power supplies | 99.99% | $689/month |
| High Grade | Critical loads | Up to 2 TB memory; public bandwidth from 1 to 10 Gbps; hot-swap disks | 99.99% | $1,263/month |
Those percentages and specifications are OVHcloud’s own range labels. Read the contractual definition, exclusions, maintenance provisions and measurement period before treating a percentage as a remedy-backed service guarantee. A network SLA is not automatically an application-availability guarantee.
OVHcloud’s product page uses the sentence “Unlimited traffic on all our servers.” Interpret that as provider marketing language, not proof that every configuration can transfer unlimited data at unlimited speed. Check the exact port speed, any use conditions, private-network allowance and regional terms.
Region selection is essential. OVHcloud’s worldwide availability table shows that range availability differs by region, and certifications are options subject to local availability. Select the country and exact server before comparing price or compliance suitability. The Game range is the logical starting point for a gaming shortlist, while Scale or High Grade deserve attention when redundant power, very large memory or hot-swappable storage matters; neither label replaces a configuration check.

Hetzner: a candidate that requires live-plan verification
Hetzner’s official homepage confirms dedicated root servers and current GPU-server announcements, but the retrieved page did not provide enough current detail to compare processor models, locations, setup fees, support scope, storage, traffic and workload specifications on equal terms.
A dated third-party comparison reported “Hetzner about $117/month — Server Room, September 2026” and approximately 64 GB of RAM, with setup fees varying substantially. Server Room is itself a hosting provider, and its comparison warns that entry machines differ in size and that prices change. Use the figure only as a lead for checking Hetzner’s live catalog, not as a confirmed current offer or evidence of superior value.
For a Hetzner quote, record the exact data center, CPU, memory, disks, traffic policy, one-time setup, operating-system options and support channel. Then compare that complete configuration against the other providers. Do not carry a third-party entry price into a recommendation when the underlying machine is different.
IONOS: recovery-console access and broad operating-system options
IONOS says its dedicated servers provide exclusive use of installed resources. It supports Linux through encrypted SSH and Windows through RDP, and provides a KVM VNC console for situations in which a network or firewall change blocks normal access. That out-of-band console can be valuable during recovery, but it does not replace a tested backup and restoration process.
The provider lists web servers, email-marketing platforms, game servers, video streaming, forums and communities, and online-store development among potential uses. Virtualization is described as possible on plans with Intel Scalable and AMD EPYC processors. IONOS also states that Hyper-V cannot currently be used with those dedicated plans under Microsoft licensing terms. Confirm the processor model, current licensing rule and supported hypervisor for the specific plan before designing a virtualized deployment.
IONOS states that 100% DDoS protection is not currently possible. Treat DDoS protection as mitigation with a defined scope, not an absolute security promise. Ask which attacks are filtered, where filtering occurs, what capacity is available and what happens when an attack exceeds the service’s design.
Liquid Web: choose between managed and self-managed responsibility
Liquid Web’s 2026 provider guide describes single-tenant hardware, hardware customization, Linux or Windows choices and managed or self-managed tiers. Its positioning is aimed at demanding, high-traffic or compliance-sensitive workloads.

The important buying question is the boundary of management. In a managed tier, establish whether the host handles operating-system updates, basic security hardening, monitoring, backups, incident triage and application-specific assistance. In a self-managed tier, assume your team owns those tasks unless the contract says otherwise. Ask for response targets, escalation paths, maintenance notice and the list of billable work.
The guide includes provider-reported management and uptime representations, including a “100% network” claim for Liquid Web. That is a vendor-published statement, not independent proof of application uptime or a controlled comparison with the other four providers. Read the service-level agreement to learn what is measured, what exclusions apply and what remedy is offered.
Leaseweb: configurable ranges and operational controls
Leaseweb describes its dedicated servers as physical and single-tenant and offers general-purpose, high-performance, bandwidth, gaming, storage and GPU categories. It says customers can customize RAM, disks and bandwidth, which can help avoid paying for an oversized CPU or memory configuration when storage or network capacity is the real constraint.
Leaseweb offers monthly contracts and a Customer Portal/API with automated actions such as reboots, operating-system reloads, rescue mode, IP management and private networking. These controls reduce manual intervention during routine operations, but they should be protected with strong authentication and tested in a recovery runbook.
Leaseweb describes 24/7 technical support. Confirm what that means for your selected plan: infrastructure-only assistance, operating-system help, response targets, escalation to hardware teams and coverage for application incidents are different services. The provider’s monitoring add-on is enabled for dedicated-server customers in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States; verify availability and pricing in the region you intend to use.

Why published entry prices cannot be ranked directly
Entry machines differ in CPU, RAM, storage, traffic, support, location and setup charges. A low headline price can therefore be a smaller server, a promotional term or a quote before VAT.

Server Room’s September 2026 comparison reports approximate figures as follows:
| Provider and figure | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Hetzner about $117/month | Server Room, September 2026; approximate entry price, with machine size and setup fees differing |
| Leaseweb about €51/month promotional | Server Room, September 2026; promotional one-year figure before VAT |
| OVHcloud about $70/month for Rise-1 | Server Room, September 2026; approximate third-party-reported entry figure |
Server Room sells dedicated servers, so its comparison has a commercial interest. It also does not constitute a normalized five-provider total-cost study. Use these numbers only to identify quotes to verify.

Network, region and resilience checks
Choose the region from user latency and data rules
Place the server near the users, dependent services and data boundary that matter most. A provider may offer a product family in one country but not another. OVHcloud explicitly shows range availability varying by region; the same check is necessary for every provider before you promise a location to customers.
Separate public bandwidth from private connectivity
Public bandwidth serves the internet-facing application. Private bandwidth may connect servers, storage or backup systems inside the provider network. Record both values, the port speed and whether traffic is metered, capped or subject to fair-use conditions. “Unlimited traffic” does not mean an unlimited physical port.
Read the SLA definition
Compare what the uptime percentage measures: network reachability, power, hardware replacement or the complete service. Check maintenance exclusions, force-majeure language, measurement intervals and service credits. OVHcloud publishes 99.5% for Game, 99.95% for Advance and 99.99% for Scale and High Grade; those numbers are not interchangeable because the ranges and contractual definitions differ.
Recommended Free Tools
Design backups separately
Disk redundancy can keep a server running after a drive failure, but RAID is not a backup. Keep an independent copy, test restoration and define recovery-point and recovery-time objectives. Ask whether backup traffic uses private bandwidth and whether the provider charges for storage or restores.

Support and management: assign every operational task
Before ordering, write down who owns each task:
- Initial operating-system installation and hardening
- Kernel, package and control-panel updates
- Firewall rules, credentials and intrusion response
- Application deployment and troubleshooting
- Monitoring, alert acknowledgement and incident communications
- Backups, restore tests and retention
- Hardware replacement and data recovery
Liquid Web explicitly presents managed and self-managed tiers. Leaseweb describes 24/7 technical support and portal/API operations, but exact assistance remains plan-dependent. IONOS provides a KVM VNC console for network-access failures. These are different capabilities; do not treat a console or a support mailbox as full managed administration.
A practical buying procedure
- Define the workload. Record peak and sustained CPU use, memory working set, storage capacity and I/O pattern, expected traffic, latency targets and any GPU requirement.
- Choose two or three candidate regions. Measure user geography, legal or contractual data-location requirements and proximity to databases, object storage or payment systems.
- Create a minimum specification. Name the CPU generation, core count, RAM, disk type, usable capacity, RAID level, public port, private network and DDoS requirement.
- Filter the five providers. Use OVHcloud’s Game, Scale or High Grade labels, Leaseweb’s gaming, GPU, storage or bandwidth categories and the other providers’ exact catalog entries only as shortlist signals.
- Request or configure an exact quote. Include term length, setup, VAT, licenses, backups, monitoring, managed service and renewal price.
- Confirm support boundaries in writing. Ask who handles OS patches, hardware incidents, emergency reboots, security events and application failures, and request response targets.
- Check recovery features. Verify rescue mode, remote console, OS reload, private networking, snapshot or backup options and the hardware-replacement process.
- Test before migration. During an evaluation or initial low-risk deployment, measure latency from your real user regions, disk behavior under your workload and restore time. Do not generalize those results to other providers or configurations.
- Document exit conditions. Record cancellation notice, data-export method, IP portability, final invoices and how securely disks are wiped or returned.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the cheapest headline plan
Correct the comparison by pricing identical resources and adding setup, tax, licenses, backups, support and renewal. Promotional pricing should be labeled as promotional and separated from the recurring rate.
Assuming a workload label is a benchmark
“Gaming,” “GPU” or “high-performance” describes a target use, not measured superiority. Inspect the exact CPU, GPU, disk and network configuration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Confusing network SLA with application uptime
Ask what the SLA measures and what remedy applies. A network guarantee cannot ensure that your code, database or firewall is healthy.
Treating DDoS mitigation as absolute protection
IONOS explicitly says 100% DDoS protection is not possible. Determine the mitigation scope, escalation process and your own upstream or application-layer defenses.
Virtualizing without checking licensing
IONOS notes a current Hyper-V restriction under Microsoft licensing terms on the described dedicated plans. Confirm current processor and hypervisor rules before purchasing hardware for a virtual-machine cluster.
Skipping a restore drill
Redundant disks and rescue consoles help recovery, but only a timed restore test proves that backups meet your objective.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which provider fits which initial shortlist?
- Start with OVHcloud when you need clearly separated bare-metal ranges, very large memory, gaming-oriented mitigation, redundant power or hot-swappable disks, and you can verify regional inventory and terms.
- Start with Hetzner when its live catalog has the required root-server or GPU configuration and the resulting quote, setup fee and support scope meet your worksheet; the retrieved public information is not sufficient for a preverified ranking.
- Start with IONOS when Linux or Windows access, RDP, encrypted SSH and an out-of-band KVM VNC console are important, while confirming virtualization and DDoS limitations.
- Start with Liquid Web when you want a documented choice between managed and self-managed operations and need to clarify responsibility for a demanding or compliance-sensitive service.
- Start with Leaseweb when configurable RAM, disks and bandwidth, monthly terms, portal/API automation or a GPU, storage, gaming or bandwidth category matches the workload; verify country-specific support and monitoring.
No neutral controlled benchmark establishes that one of these five is objectively fastest or most reliable across all workloads. Make the final decision from the normalized quote, region, measured requirements and written service terms rather than a universal “best” badge.
