Cyberpunk 2077 is the best starting point if you want first-person cyberpunk combat with meaningful choice: guns, ranged attacks, hacking, body-enhancing implants, stealth, weapon upgrades and role-playing progression all support different approaches. Choose Ghostrunner instead when your priority is rapid first-person melee in a cyberpunk setting rather than an open-world RPG.
These games do not pursue the same kind of action. Cyberpunk 2077 places combat inside a large story-driven world, while Ghostrunner is built around the immediacy and precision of a first-person slasher. The right choice depends on whether you want build variety and exploration or speed and swordplay.

Its official game description emphasizes an open world in which you can invest in skills and perks, improve weapons, use hacking and body-enhancing implants, and decide whether to attack directly, fight from range or stay stealthy. That combination makes it the strongest recommendation when “first-person combat” means more than shooting alone.

You can think of its combat options as a set of overlapping decisions:
- Direct gun combat: Choose an aggressive approach and rely on firearms in encounters that reward a guns-blazing attitude.
- Ranged engagement: Keep distance and use ranged attacks when closing with opponents is not your preferred solution.
- Hacking: Use cybernetic and technical abilities to affect encounters instead of treating every fight as a conventional firefight.
- Implants: Invest in body-enhancing cyberware to shape what your character can do.
- Stealth: Avoid a loud confrontation when a quieter route better suits your build or the situation.

Cyberpunk 2077 is also an open-world action-adventure. Combat sits alongside jobs, exploration, relationships and decisions that shape the story and world. The PlayStation description identifies V as a mercenary outlaw and says relationships and choices influence what happens around you. Consequently, the game suits players who want to leave a fight, make a consequential decision, explore another part of Night City and return with a different build or upgraded equipment.

You are not selecting a sequence of disconnected arenas; you are developing a character while moving through a story. The trade-off is equally clear: if you want every minute to be a rapid melee test with little downtime, the open-world format may feel less concentrated than a dedicated slasher.

What the Ultimate Edition includes
The publisher describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as containing every gameplay update and all previously released content, including the Phantom Liberty expansion. The listed platform choices are PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with physical and digital options shown by the publisher.

That list does not guarantee that every edition is sold in every territory or that the same package is available from every retailer. Before checkout, open the store page for your platform and confirm:
- Whether the listing is the Ultimate Edition or the base game.
- Whether Phantom Liberty is included or sold separately.
- Whether the copy is physical or digital and whether it works on your exact hardware.
- Which updates and previously released content the local listing says are included.
The PS4 support cutoff matters
If you are buying for PlayStation, treat the PS4 and PS5 versions as materially different choices. The official PlayStation page says the PS4 version received its last patch on November 8, 2022 and is no longer supported. It also says PS5 is required for patches released after that date and for Phantom Liberty on PlayStation.
That means a PS4 purchase should not be treated as an equivalent way to receive the ongoing updated version. If access to later patches or the expansion is important, choose the PS5 version and verify the edition shown in your regional store.

Optional 3D audio equipment
PlayStation describes 3D audio as working through either a compatible headset or TV speakers. A headset can be an appealing way to hear a busy combat environment, but it is not a requirement for the feature. The same page lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers for the PS5 experience. Check your television, controller and console setup before spending money on an accessory; the game does not require a headset simply to play or to use 3D audio.
Phantom Liberty: what it adds
Phantom Liberty is a spy-thriller expansion that sends V to Dogtown. In its September 25, 2023 launch announcement, CD PROJEKT RED described a new story and district alongside a skill tree, gigs, side quests, weapons, items, boss fights and additional open-world activities.
The announcement said the expansion was available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and GeForce Now at that time. That is a dated availability statement, not a promise that every current storefront offers the same package. For a present-day purchase, check the live listing for your platform and territory.
Game Director Gabe Amatangelo described the release this way: “Phantom Liberty is the culmination of years of hard work on the part of all of our teams.” The quotation comes from CD PROJEKT RED’s September 25, 2023 launch announcement.
For a new player choosing between editions, the practical implication is simple: if you want the expanded story, Dogtown, its additional activities and the extra progression content, look for a listing that explicitly includes Phantom Liberty. Do not assume that a base-game listing silently contains it.

Ghostrunner: the focused first-person melee alternative
What its combat identity is
PlayStation describes Ghostrunner as a “hardcore first-person slasher” set in a grim cyberpunk megastructure, with fast-paced and violent combat. That description makes it the natural alternative for readers who put speed, melee action and immediate execution above firearms, hacking or open-world role-playing.
The first-person viewpoint is not merely a camera choice here; it supports a close-range combat proposition. You are choosing a game centered on rapid slashing in a hostile cyberpunk environment. The cited description establishes that combat is fast and melee-oriented, but it does not establish the same kind of skill trees, weapon-upgrade breadth, open-world structure or story-choice systems associated with Cyberpunk 2077.
Who should choose it?
Ghostrunner is the better choice if your priorities look like these:
- You want a cyberpunk setting without committing to a large open-world RPG.
- You prefer a first-person slasher to a game built around firearms.
- You value rapid, violent encounters and the pressure of immediate melee decisions.

If you want melee to be the main event
Choose Ghostrunner. Its official description is explicitly centered on first-person slashing and fast-paced combat. That is a closer match than an open-world RPG if you want the shortest path from loading the game to a high-pressure melee encounter.
If you want combat plus story and exploration
Choose Cyberpunk 2077. Its open-world structure combines fights with jobs, relationships, exploration and choices that shape the story and world. Ghostrunner is the more focused action proposition.
If you want a cyberpunk game but not an RPG commitment
Start with Ghostrunner. The available description supports a cyberpunk action/slasher identity without asking you to evaluate a large set of role-playing systems. If you later decide you want character builds, hacking and branching narrative decisions, Cyberpunk 2077 is the broader follow-up.
If you own a PS4
Be cautious with Cyberpunk 2077. The PlayStation page says PS4 support stopped after the November 8, 2022 patch and that later patches and Phantom Liberty require PS5. Check the exact version you are considering rather than assuming a PS4 disc or digital listing provides the current PS5 feature set.
How to avoid an edition or platform mistake
- Start with your hardware. Write down whether you will play on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 or Nintendo Switch 2 for Cyberpunk 2077. For Ghostrunner, use the platform selector on the current store page.
