For a dependable starting point, use Cyberpunk 2077’s Low or Steam Deck preset, keep ray tracing and path tracing disabled, and enable FSR upscaling when native 1080p is too demanding. Test that setup separately in 35 W Turbo while plugged in and 17 W Performance on battery, then choose a 40 or 60 FPS cap according to whether consistency or battery life matters more. These are evidence-based starting settings, not a guarantee of one universal result.

The ROG Xbox Ally X uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, a 1080p 120 Hz touchscreen and an 80 Wh battery. Its performance changes substantially with power mode, upscaler, preset, and software features, so a single “Cyberpunk FPS” number is not meaningful without those conditions.

What performance should you expect?

Published results span the high 30s to the 90s because reviewers used different presets, wattage limits, upscalers and driver features. The following figures are useful reference points, not interchangeable benchmarks.

Source and configuration Reported result What the number means
ASUS product benchmark; 1080p, default graphics, RSR/FSR off, Turbo at 35 W, plugged in 40 FPS average ASUS’s comparison condition for the Ally X at its 35 W Turbo limit
ASUS product benchmark; 1080p, default graphics, RSR/FSR off, Performance at 17 W, on battery 31 FPS average A lower-power battery result, not a prediction for every battery charge or temperature
Windows Central review (2025); 1080p, Low preset, FSR 2.1 Auto, 35 W plugged in, HYPR-RX defaults enabled, 8 GB VRAM, frame generation off Approximately 93.25 FPS A tuned software configuration with aggressive performance headroom
Windows Central review (2025); same stated conditions, Steam Deck preset Approximately 83.61 FPS Shows that the preset and software configuration matter as much as the hardware
Tom’s Guide review (2025); medium-to-high details, 1080p, FSR resolution scaling after its tweaks About 50 FPS average A visual-quality-oriented setup; it is not directly comparable with the Windows Central result

Windows Central also observed its Steam Deck-preset average increase from about 45 FPS to 83 FPS after enabling HYPR-RX defaults. That is reviewer-observed behavior, not a universal gain. The test used frame generation off, so do not treat FSR upscaling and frame generation as the same feature.

ASUS’s figures compare the newer ROG Xbox Ally X with the older ROG Ally X at different wattage limits. Use them to understand the difference between plugged-in Turbo and battery Performance, not as a controlled product-to-product laboratory comparison.

Use separate plugged-in and battery profiles

Profile A: plugged-in play

When connected to power, select Turbo at 35 W. Start with the Steam Deck preset at 1080p, use FSR 2.1 Auto if that option is available in your installed game version, and leave ray tracing and path tracing off. A 60 FPS cap is sensible when you want a stable target; a 40 FPS cap can reduce swings and power use when the scene is too heavy for 60.

  • Power mode: Turbo, 35 W, plugged in.
  • Resolution: 1920×1080 output.
  • Preset: Steam Deck first; Low if you need more headroom.
  • Upscaling: FSR enabled, starting with Auto.
  • Ray tracing and path tracing: disabled.
  • Frame generation: leave off while establishing a baseline.
  • Frame cap: 60 FPS for responsiveness, or 40 FPS for steadier delivery.

This profile is the best place to assess image quality because the 35 W limit gives the GPU more room. If the frame rate remains well above your cap, you can raise selected quality options one at a time rather than switching every setting together.

Profile B: battery play

On battery, select Performance at 17 W. Keep the Steam Deck or Low preset, retain FSR scaling, and use a 40 FPS cap unless you have verified that 60 FPS is sustainable in the areas you play. Lowering the cap limits rapid swings and can reduce energy demand, but the sources do not establish one ideal cap for every player.

  • Power mode: Performance, 17 W, on battery.
  • Resolution: keep 1080p output and let FSR reduce internal rendering load.
  • Preset: Low or Steam Deck.
  • Ray tracing and path tracing: disabled.
  • Frame cap: begin at 40 FPS; test 60 only if consistency is acceptable.

ASUS’s heavy-AAA battery test used Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p, Low graphics and a 60 FPS cap in 17 W Performance mode. ASUS does not publish a Cyberpunk-specific runtime for that test, so no fixed number of hours can be promised.

How to configure Cyberpunk 2077

1. Set the handheld power mode first

  1. Connect the Ally X to its charger if you are creating the plugged-in profile, then select Turbo at 35 W. For a battery profile, unplug it and select Performance at 17 W.
  2. Close other demanding applications and let the game finish any shader-compilation or streaming activity before judging performance.
  3. Keep the same power mode while changing settings; otherwise you will not know whether a frame-rate change came from the game or the TDP limit.

2. Choose a sensible baseline preset

  1. Open Cyberpunk 2077’s Graphics settings.
  2. Select the Steam Deck preset as the first baseline. If that preset is unavailable in your build, select Low.
  3. Turn ray tracing off, including path-tracing options. These effects consume substantial GPU headroom on a handheld and are not part of the recommended baseline.
  4. Apply the changes and restart the game if it requests a restart.

3. Set output resolution and upscaling

  1. Use the Ally X’s 1920×1080 output when you want the sharpest interface and text at the panel’s native resolution.
  2. Enable FSR resolution scaling when native rendering produces uneven frame times. Windows Central measured FSR 2.1 Auto in its 35 W test, while Tom’s Guide also used FSR scaling in its tuned result.
  3. Compare movement, fine text and distant signage while standing in the same location. A faster mode can look softer; a slower mode can look cleaner but reduce performance.
  4. Do not assume the best FSR mode is identical across game updates. Record the mode you selected so you can restore it after a settings reset.

4. Establish a frame-rate target

  1. Start with a 60 FPS cap in Turbo if you want a responsive feel and the game can approach that target.
  2. Use a 40 FPS cap when the frame rate repeatedly falls below 60 or when you want fewer fluctuations on battery.
  3. Play a demanding section for several minutes before changing the cap. A short menu scene is not representative of crowded streets, driving or combat.

5. Change one variable at a time

Once the baseline is stable, adjust only one of the following between tests: preset, FSR mode, resolution, ray-tracing state or frame cap. Note the average frame rate and whether frame delivery feels smooth. Changing several controls together makes it impossible to identify the setting responsible for an improvement or a visual regression.

Why the published results differ

Preset and internal resolution

Low and Steam Deck presets reduce the rendering workload compared with medium or high detail. FSR then renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the 1080p output. That is why Windows Central’s Low-preset result was approximately 93.25 FPS while Tom’s Guide reported about 50 FPS with medium-to-high details and FSR scaling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power limit

The GPU cannot sustain the same clocks at 17 W as at 35 W. ASUS recorded 40 FPS at 35 W Turbo with RSR/FSR disabled and 31 FPS at 17 W Performance under otherwise stated default-settings conditions. Those values describe power-mode behavior, not a hard limit on what FSR or a lower preset can achieve.

Software defaults

Windows Central’s Steam Deck result changed from about 45 FPS without HYPR-RX defaults to about 83 FPS after enabling them in its review configuration. HYPR-RX behavior depends on the driver and enabled features, so treat it as a setting to test rather than a guaranteed multiplier.

Frame generation versus upscaling

Upscaling reduces the number of pixels rendered before reconstruction. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames. Windows Central explicitly tested with frame generation off; therefore its figures cannot be used to promise a frame-generation result on your Ally X.

Understanding the image-quality tradeoff

Native 1080p sends every output pixel through the game renderer, which generally gives the cleanest fine text and signage but places the greatest load on the GPU. FSR reduces the internal workload and reconstructs the 1080p image. The result can be substantially faster, but fine details may look softer or show reconstruction artifacts during movement. There is no single correct choice: use the highest-quality FSR mode that maintains the cap you actually want.

Low and Steam Deck presets are not identical to a universal “console mode.” They are practical starting points that reduce demanding options together. If you prefer a sharper scene, raise one option at a time after establishing a stable baseline. If frame pacing worsens, undo the last change rather than compensating by changing several other settings.

Using HYPR-RX and handheld profiles

If your current AMD software exposes HYPR-RX defaults, test them after recording a baseline with the game’s own settings. Keep the same preset, power limit and FSR mode while toggling HYPR-RX so the comparison is meaningful. If latency, image artifacts or inconsistent frame pacing appear, return to the baseline rather than assuming the higher counter value is better.

Xbox’s Default Game Profiles can automate TDP and FPS targets for supported games on battery. The cited Xbox documentation does not establish that Cyberpunk 2077 is one of those supported titles. Check the profile interface on your own handheld; if Cyberpunk is absent, set Performance mode and the cap manually.

Xbox Wire reported more than 1,000 PC games covered by its Handheld Compatibility program in an April 30, 2026 update. That figure is platform context, not a Cyberpunk 2077 performance measurement or proof that a particular profile is available.

Practical checks before changing graphics

  • Confirm whether the charger is connected. Turbo at 35 W is the plugged-in test condition; battery testing should use Performance at 17 W.
  • Check the active output resolution after every major update. A reset to a different resolution changes both sharpness and the workload.
  • Confirm the selected FSR mode in the game’s menu instead of assuming an earlier choice survived an update.
  • Keep frame generation off while establishing a comparable baseline, as Windows Central did.
  • Record the driver, game version, preset and power mode alongside your FPS observation. Without those details, two apparently conflicting results may both be accurate.
  • Allow background downloads, shader compilation and other heavy applications to finish before judging a profile.

Troubleshooting common problems

The game stays near 30 FPS

  • Confirm that the handheld is not in a lower silent or battery-saving mode.
  • Check that FSR is enabled and that the game did not revert to native rendering after an update.
  • Verify that ray tracing and path tracing are disabled.
  • Use the Steam Deck or Low preset before lowering output resolution.
  • Check whether the 17 W battery limit is active. A result near the low 30s is consistent with ASUS’s 31 FPS default-settings battery figure, while a tuned 35 W setup is a different comparison.

The FPS counter is high but the game feels uneven

  • Apply a 40 or 60 FPS cap instead of allowing unrestricted swings.
  • Retest after shader compilation and background downloads finish.
  • Compare the same route or save location; changing areas can change streaming and CPU load.
  • Disable HYPR-RX temporarily to determine whether a driver feature is affecting frame pacing.
  • Watch for sudden power-mode changes when moving between charger and battery. A cap selected for Turbo may be unrealistic after the handheld switches to 17 W.

The image looks too soft

  • Move from a more aggressive FSR mode to Auto or a higher-quality option.
  • Keep the 1080p output while accepting a lower frame cap.
  • Raise the preset only after confirming that the current mode has spare performance.
  • Compare text, distant signs and foliage while moving, not only a paused screenshot; reconstruction quality can change during motion.

Battery life is shorter than expected

  • Use 17 W Performance rather than Turbo while unplugged.
  • Set a 40 FPS cap and retain Low or Steam Deck settings.
  • Reduce screen brightness and close background applications.
  • Do not infer runtime from ASUS’s heavy-AAA test; it specifies the game settings and cap but not a Cyberpunk-specific duration.
  • Remember that an 80 Wh battery does not guarantee a fixed runtime. Display brightness, temperature, software activity and the chosen cap all affect consumption.

A repeatable tuning method

  1. Record the initial power mode, preset, resolution, FSR mode, ray-tracing state and FPS cap.
  2. Use one repeatable save location that includes traversal and combat, rather than relying on a quiet indoor scene.
  3. Play for several minutes and note average performance, visible stutter and image quality.
  4. Change one setting, repeat the same route and compare.
  5. Keep the configuration that meets your chosen cap with acceptable clarity; do not optimize for a counter value alone.
  6. Repeat the process separately for plugged-in Turbo and battery Performance. A setting that is comfortable at 35 W may be unsuitable at 17 W.
  7. After finding a preferred profile, write down the exact cap and FSR mode. This makes it easier to restore the setup after a driver or game update.

Recommended final starting points

Use case Power Preset Resolution and scaling Ray tracing Cap Tradeoff
Plugged-in, responsive play Turbo, 35 W Steam Deck or Low 1080p output, FSR Auto Off 60 FPS if stable Highest responsiveness, greater power use
Plugged-in, consistent delivery Turbo, 35 W Steam Deck 1080p output, FSR Auto Off 40 FPS More consistent target with headroom for heavy scenes
Battery, balanced play Performance, 17 W Low or Steam Deck 1080p output, FSR enabled Off 40 FPS Lower consumption and fewer swings, softer image possible
Battery, image-quality experiment Performance, 17 W Steam Deck 1080p output, higher-quality FSR mode if stable Off Test 40 first, then 60 Cleaner image if sustainable, less performance headroom

These profiles deliberately avoid promising a fixed frame rate. Your installed game version, driver, temperature, background load and chosen FSR mode can move the result away from every published figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the ROG Xbox Ally X run Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 FPS?

It can approach that target under some tuned 35 W configurations, but 60 FPS is not guaranteed. Windows Central measured approximately 83.61 FPS on the Steam Deck preset with FSR 2.1 Auto, HYPR-RX defaults and frame generation off at 35 W. ASUS’s default-settings result was 40 FPS at 35 W with RSR/FSR disabled, showing why the exact configuration matters.

What is the best Cyberpunk preset on the Ally X?

Start with the Steam Deck preset. Use Low if you need more headroom, especially on battery. Keep ray tracing and path tracing disabled while establishing a baseline, then raise individual options only after checking frame pacing.

Should I use FSR or native 1080p?

Use native 1080p if performance is already consistent and you want maximum clarity. Enable FSR scaling when native rendering causes drops or uneven frame times. Windows Central used FSR 2.1 Auto, and Tom’s Guide also reported a tuned FSR-scaled result, but the best mode depends on your game version and preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What FPS cap is best on battery?

Begin at 40 FPS in 17 W Performance mode. Test 60 FPS only if demanding areas remain consistent. A cap can reduce swings and energy demand, but no single cap is ideal for every player.

Does HYPR-RX guarantee a large FPS increase?

No. Windows Central observed its Steam Deck average rise from about 45 FPS to 83 FPS after enabling HYPR-RX defaults in its review setup. That is reviewer-observed behavior; driver versions, enabled features and game updates can produce different results.

Is frame generation included in the published FPS figures?

The Windows Central measurements cited here used frame generation off. FSR upscaling and frame generation are separate features, so those figures should not be used to promise a frame-generation result.

How long will Cyberpunk run on the Ally X battery?

There is no Cyberpunk-specific runtime in the cited ASUS data. ASUS describes a heavy-AAA test at 1080p, Low settings, a 60 FPS cap and 17 W Performance mode, but does not publish a Cyberpunk duration. Actual runtime varies with brightness, temperature, background activity and your cap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Xbox Default Game Profiles configure Cyberpunk automatically?

Only if the game is supported by the profile system. Xbox documentation explains that profiles can automate TDP and FPS targets for supported battery games, but it does not establish Cyberpunk 2077 support. Check the profile interface on your own Ally X and configure the game manually if it is absent.

Why do review FPS numbers differ so much?

The tests use different power limits, presets, resolutions, upscalers and software defaults. For example, ASUS reported 40 FPS at 35 W with default graphics and RSR/FSR off, Windows Central reported approximately 83.61 FPS on Steam Deck with FSR 2.1 Auto and HYPR-RX, and Tom’s Guide reported about 50 FPS with medium-to-high details and FSR scaling. These are reference points, not interchangeable scores.

The Bottom Line

Start with Steam Deck or Low settings, 1080p output, FSR enabled, and ray tracing and path tracing off. Use Turbo at 35 W when plugged in and Performance at 17 W on battery. Try a 60 FPS cap for responsiveness, or 40 FPS when consistency and lower power use matter more. Verify each profile in a demanding route, because published results vary with preset, wattage, software defaults and game version.
