There is no official Valve specification for the RAM, CPU, or player capacity of a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server. For a small, containerized server, the most concrete published starting point is a maintainer’s baseline of 2 CPUs, 2 GiB of RAM, and 60 GB of disk. A separate hosting guide suggests about 2 GB RAM and 65 GB of free disk for a plain match server. Treat both as planning references, not guarantees: plugins, CSTV/GOTV recording, spectators, multiple instances, updates, logs, backups, and other services require headroom that no published source quantifies.
CS2 server requirements at a glance
The figures below separate the playable game client from server-sizing guidance. That distinction matters because Steam’s product page describes what a computer needs to run the game, not what a headless machine needs to host matches.
| Use case | Published figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Playable CS2 client | 8 GB RAM and 85 GB available storage | Valve/Steam minimums for the Windows and SteamOS/Linux client. They are not dedicated-server requirements. |
| Small containerized dedicated server | 2 CPUs, 2 GiB RAM, 60 GB disk | Minimum stated in the joedwards32 CS2 container project README. It is a project-maintainer baseline, not a Valve specification or an independent benchmark. |
| Plain match server | 2 GB RAM and 65 GB free disk | Nonofficial guidance from the DeinServerHost Wiki, reviewed 29 July 2026. The guide advises adding resources for plugins and GOTV and leaving room for updates, logs, plugins, and backups. |
| Plugins, recording, spectators, or several instances | Additional resources required; amount not stated | No reliable public formula has been published that converts player count or features into a precise CPU or RAM number. |
Use the smallest figures only as a starting floor. Before opening the server to the public, observe the machine during a real match and keep capacity for operating-system tasks, updates, logs, backups, and traffic spikes.
Why CS2 client requirements do not size a server
Steam lists the client minimum as Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.04, a four-hardware-thread Intel Core i5-750-or-higher processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 85 GB of available storage. Graphics requirements are also listed because the client renders the game. A dedicated server generally runs without the player-facing renderer, so copying the client minimum to a server can overstate some components while still ignoring server-specific needs such as network exposure, persistent configuration, and multiple processes.

Conversely, using less RAM than the client minimum does not prove that every server will be stable. A server may run the game process, a container runtime, monitoring, log rotation, an operating system, and other services at the same time. Plugins and recording can change memory use and CPU scheduling. Valve has not published a dedicated-server minimum, a supported player-count table, or a RAM-per-player formula.
How much RAM does a CS2 server need?
Use a baseline, not a universal minimum
The clearest small-server reference is 2 GiB of RAM in the joedwards32 container project. The hosting guide’s plain-match figure is also approximately 2 GB. These references describe limited workloads and different authors; neither promises a particular tick rate, player capacity, plugin set, or uptime. They are useful for a first deployment, especially when the host runs only one instance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When to add memory
- Plugins: custom plugins add code and state to the server process. The hosting guide explicitly recommends more resources, but does not state how much.
- CSTV/GOTV: recording or broadcasting creates additional work and storage activity. Plan headroom instead of treating a plain match baseline as sufficient.
- Spectators: observer traffic and administrative tools can increase workload, although no published source establishes a fixed amount per spectator.
- Multiple instances: each instance has its own process and configuration. Do not assume one baseline can be multiplied perfectly; measure the combined host.
- Other services: dashboards, databases, proxies, backup jobs, and monitoring compete for memory with the game process.
How to validate RAM in practice
Start with the published baseline only when the workload is genuinely small. During a full match, watch total memory, swap activity, container memory limits, and the operating system’s out-of-memory events. A host that remains within its limit while players, spectators, plugins, and logging are active has more useful evidence than a nominal specification. If swapping begins or the process is terminated, increase the host’s memory or remove competing services before inviting more players.
What CPU does a CS2 server need?
The only concrete CPU figure available
The container project lists 2 CPUs as its minimum. That wording does not identify a processor model, clock speed, generation, or virtualization type. Valve’s client listing names a four-hardware-thread Intel Core i5-750-or-higher processor, but that is a rendered client requirement and should not be presented as a dedicated-server recommendation.
Why CPU capacity depends on workload
Match simulation, networking, plugins, recording, and additional instances all compete for CPU time. A host with two available virtual CPUs may be adequate for a basic test server and inadequate once several processes run together. No published benchmark supports a specific modern CPU model, a guaranteed player count, or a linear rule such as a fixed number of cores per player.

When comparing hosts, ask whether the advertised vCPUs are dedicated, shared, burstable, or subject to a provider’s CPU limit. For self-hosting, check sustained CPU use during busy rounds rather than relying on idle measurements. A server that regularly reaches its limit can produce delayed commands or unstable performance even when RAM remains available.
Disk, network, and port requirements
Storage planning
The container project’s 60 GB figure and the hosting guide’s 65 GB recommendation leave different amounts of room for the same broad purpose: game files plus operating-system, update, log, plugin, and backup space. The latter guide specifically recommends additional room beyond a plain installation. Storage consumption can grow after updates, repeated recordings, crash dumps, and retained backups, so configure monitoring and a cleanup policy rather than filling the disk.
Connectivity and reachability
A public server needs a stable route from players to the host, a reachable address, and firewall rules that permit the ports used by the server. Home connections may involve carrier-grade NAT, changing public addresses, upload limits, or router restrictions. A virtual or managed host may simplify reachability but still require firewall configuration and an appropriate region for your players.
Example ports from the container project
The joedwards32 project documents mappings for 27015 TCP, 27015 UDP, and optional 27020 UDP for CSTV. These are implementation examples for that project, not a universal CS2 rule. Confirm the current project README and Valve documentation before applying them, then open only the ports you actually use.
Match workload changes the sizing decision
| Workload | Resource effect | Planning approach |
|---|---|---|
| One plain match instance | Closest to the published small-server references | Use the baseline as a trial, then monitor CPU, memory, disk, and network during a real game. |
| Custom plugins | Extra process memory and CPU; impact varies by plugin behavior | Enable plugins one group at a time and observe the host after each change. |
| CSTV/GOTV or recording | Additional processing, network, and persistent storage activity | Reserve headroom and set retention limits for recordings and logs. |
| Spectators and administrators | More network traffic and possible plugin/API activity | Test with the expected observer count; no fixed per-spectator allowance is established. |
| Several CS2 instances | Multiple game processes and separate configuration/log streams | Measure aggregate usage; do not assume a simple multiplication is safe. |
| Game server plus unrelated services | Competing CPU, memory, disk, and network demand | Use separate machines or strict resource limits when reliability matters. |
Choose a hosting model
Listen server for a small LAN
Steam Support distinguishes a listen server from a dedicated server and describes listen servers as suitable for small LAN games, not as public servers. The game session runs alongside the host player’s client, so the host must stay connected and the machine’s client workload competes with hosting. This is convenient for a short local session, but it is a poor fit for an always-on community server or a group spread across the internet.

Self-managed dedicated server
You control the operating system, updates, firewall, backups, ports, and configuration on a home machine or virtual server. This can be economical when you already have suitable hardware and a reliable connection, but you are responsible for patching, troubleshooting, public reachability, and protecting administrative credentials. Container deployment can make repeatable configuration and persistent storage easier, provided you understand the container project’s current requirements.
Managed game-server provider
A managed provider handles some combination of installation, networking, updates, control-panel access, and support. Compare CPU allocation, RAM limits, disk type and quota, backup policy, DDoS protection, server location, player-slot limits, plugin support, renewal price, cancellation terms, and whether you can export your files. A low advertised price is not useful if the plan throttles CPU or charges separately for backups and additional storage.
| Priority | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quick local game with a few people | Listen server | Host must play and remain online; not intended for a public service. |
| Maximum control and existing hardware | Self-managed dedicated host | You handle networking, security, updates, monitoring, and recovery. |
| Less administration and predictable access | Managed provider | Recurring cost, provider limits, and contract terms require careful comparison. |
Step-by-step self-hosting plan
1. Define the workload
Write down the number of instances, expected player and spectator activity, plugin list, recording requirements, backup retention, and whether the server must be available continuously. This prevents buying a plan sized for a plain match and then adding demanding features without measurement.
2. Select a reachable host
For home hosting, verify upload capacity, public addressing, router control, power reliability, and whether your provider blocks inbound traffic. For a VPS, check the region, virtualization type, CPU policy, storage quota, and console access. For a managed service, confirm that CS2, your intended game mode, plugins, and recording features are supported before paying.

The 2.5G high-speed Ethernet eliminates lag for online competitive gaming and large file transmission.
4. Deploy the server software
If you use the joedwards32 container project, follow its current README rather than copying an old compose file. The project demonstrates persistent storage, game mode and map settings, a Steam game-server token, RCON configuration, and port mappings. Pin a known image version where the project supports it, document your environment variables, and keep secrets out of public repositories.
5. Configure ports and credentials
Map the required game ports, beginning with the project’s documented 27015 TCP/UDP mappings and adding 27020 UDP only when CSTV is enabled. Set a strong RCON password, protect the server token, and configure the host firewall to allow only the necessary traffic. Do not expose management interfaces or databases to the public internet.
6. Launch a community dedicated server
Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 release notes dated 29 September 2023 give this reference command:
cs2 -dedicated +map de_dust2
Valve introduces it with the sentence, “To launch a community dedicated server, you can use this reference command line:” Treat the command as a reference, because launch arguments and distribution details can change. Adapt it to the installation method you selected and verify the current release notes when updating.
7. Enable logging
Valve’s release notes show logging examples using +sv_logfile 1 -serverlogging or configuration values sv_logfile 1 and log on. Rotate and retain logs deliberately: uncontrolled logs can consume the disk space that the server needs for updates and backups.

8. Test before publishing the address
- Connect from the same network to confirm the process and configuration.
- Test from an external network to verify public routing and firewall rules.
- Join with several players and exercise the expected game mode, plugins, and spectator workflow.
- Watch CPU, memory, disk, network, and log growth during the test.
- Restart the service and confirm that configuration and persistent data survive.
- Restore a backup or rebuild the container in a test location so recovery is not theoretical.
Monitoring and capacity checks
Record resource use during quiet periods and busy rounds. At minimum, collect:
- CPU: total utilization, per-core saturation, steal time on a VPS, and throttling events.
- Memory: process usage, host free memory, container limits, swap activity, and out-of-memory kills.
- Disk: free space, write latency, update growth, log size, recording retention, and backup usage.
- Network: upload and download throughput, packet loss, latency, firewall drops, and connection failures.
- Service health: restart count, crash logs, failed updates, and whether the server returns after a reboot.
No published benchmark turns these measurements into a guaranteed player capacity. Use them to make a workload-specific decision: add resources when the expected load causes saturation, remove unnecessary services when it does not, and leave enough free capacity for maintenance operations.
Common problems and fixes
The server starts but nobody outside the LAN can join
Check the host’s public address, router forwarding, provider firewall, local firewall, and whether carrier-grade NAT prevents inbound connections. Confirm that the external test uses the same protocol and port mapping configured by the server. A running process alone does not prove internet reachability.
The process is killed or restarts during matches
Inspect memory pressure, container limits, swap activity, and service logs. Remove competing workloads or increase available memory. If recording or plugins were recently enabled, disable them one at a time to identify the change instead of guessing at a player-based formula.
Disk space disappears after updates
Check retained logs, recordings, crash files, old images, backups, and duplicate game data. Set rotation and retention rules, reserve free space for updates, and test that cleanup does not delete the persistent configuration you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance degrades with plugins or spectators
Compare a plain match against the feature-enabled configuration under similar conditions. Review plugin documentation, update incompatible components, and measure CPU, memory, network, and disk separately. The published baseline applies most closely to a simple workload, not an arbitrarily extended one.
RCON or the server token was exposed
Change the credential immediately, remove it from shell history and public configuration, restrict management access by firewall or private network, and review logs for unauthorized activity. Store secrets in the deployment system’s protected variables rather than in a repository.
Maintenance checklist
- Schedule game and operating-system updates during a stated maintenance window.
- Back up configuration, maps, plugin files, and important logs to storage separate from the game disk.
- Keep a tested rollback or rebuild procedure for failed updates.
- Review firewall rules and administrative accounts after every infrastructure change.
- Monitor disk growth so backups and recordings cannot silently consume all free space.
- Re-test external connectivity after changing routers, providers, ports, or public addresses.
- Re-size the host when the workload changes instead of assuming the original baseline still applies.
Bottom line
For a small CS2 dedicated server, begin with the container project’s published floor of 2 CPUs, 2 GiB RAM, and 60 GB disk, or the independent plain-match planning reference of about 2 GB RAM and 65 GB free disk. Neither is an official Valve requirement. The correct host is the one that remains stable under your actual player, plugin, recording, spectator, instance, update, and backup workload. Use a listen server for a small LAN session; choose a self-managed or managed dedicated host when you need public reachability or continuous availability. Measure the running service, protect its network and credentials, and keep capacity and storage headroom rather than treating the client’s 8 GB and 85 GB figures as server specifications.
