Short answer: For Counter-Strike 2 (the current free upgrade to CS:GO), look for a laptop with a recent Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, an RTX 4050-class GPU when a sale brings it below $800, 16GB of dual-channel memory, an SSD, and a 1080p display running at 144Hz or faster. Those specifications are a buying target for competitive play, not an official Valve requirement.

The exact model matters more than the name on the lid. A reported Acer Nitro V deal paired a Core i5-13420H and RTX 4050 with a 165Hz screen for $699.99, but only 8GB of RAM. HP lists a Victus 15 configuration with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, although HP’s listing does not establish a price below $800. Prices, sellers and internal configurations change, so verify the complete SKU before ordering.

CS:GO is now Counter-Strike 2

Valve presents Counter-Strike 2 as a free upgrade to CS:GO, and Steam lists CS2 as the current game. The store page describes it as “A free upgrade to CS:GO” and the largest technical leap in Counter-Strike’s history. You therefore should judge a so-called CS:GO laptop by how well it runs CS2 today, not by older CS:GO-only system advice. Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 page is the authoritative place to recheck the game relationship and requirements.

CS2 is free to play, but free does not mean lightweight. Smoke effects, maps, player counts, server conditions and updates can all affect frame-time consistency. A laptop that merely launches the game may still feel unsuitable for a high-refresh competitive display.

Official minimums versus a sensible competitive target

Steam’s Windows listing specifies the following minimum hardware:

  • Windows 10.
  • A processor with four hardware CPU threads, such as an Intel Core i5 750 or better.
  • 8GB of RAM.
  • A 1GB-or-larger DirectX 11 graphics card with Shader Model 5.0 support.
  • 85GB of available storage.

These figures describe a starting point for compatibility. They do not promise a particular frame rate, low input latency or stable performance on a 144Hz panel. Laptop cooling, power limits, memory configuration and background processes can make two machines with similarly named parts behave differently.

For a new under-$800 esports laptop, the more useful target is a recent Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, an RTX 4050 or a discounted RTX 3050 with 6GB of graphics memory, 16GB of dual-channel RAM, SSD storage and a 1080p screen at 144Hz or higher. This recommendation comes from January 2026 market guidance, not from Valve. Read the full configuration guidance at TechBloat’s January 2026 under-$800 buying guide.

What to prioritize with an $800 ceiling

Part or feature What to seek Why it matters in CS2 What to verify in the listing
Processor Recent Core i5 or Ryzen 5 class chip Helps maintain frame-time consistency when the match is busy and supports the high frame rates a fast panel can display. Exact model number, not just “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5”; also check the laptop’s cooling design.
Graphics RTX 4050 preferred; RTX 3050 6GB can be acceptable at a discount Provides more headroom than integrated graphics and keeps settings flexible at 1080p. Exact GPU, graphics-memory amount, configured power limit and whether the listing is for a laptop GPU.
Memory 16GB, ideally dual-channel Leaves room for Windows, voice chat, a browser and game updates without pushing the system into memory pressure. Whether 16GB is installed as two modules, one module, or soldered memory; check upgrade slots.
Display 1920×1080 at 144Hz or faster A high refresh rate can make motion and aiming feel clearer when the game is rendering enough frames. Refresh rate, response behavior, brightness, color coverage and adaptive-sync support. “Gaming” alone is not a specification.
Storage At least a 512GB SSD; 1TB is more comfortable CS2 needs 85GB of free Windows storage, and the operating system and other games also consume space. Usable capacity, SSD type and whether a second drive can be installed.
Power and cooling A substantial cooling system and a suitable charger Sustained matches can expose thermal or power limits that short marketing tests do not show. Reviews or manufacturer data for fan behavior, GPU wattage and charger size; these are often omitted from retail pages.

Do not choose solely by GPU badge. A lower-power RTX 4050 in a thin chassis can perform differently from a higher-power implementation with better cooling. Conversely, paying for a faster GPU while accepting 8GB of non-upgradable memory may create a less balanced machine.

Two configurations worth checking

Only two named configurations provide enough detail for a meaningful comparison. Neither has a controlled, independent CS2 benchmark for the exact SKU, so the table is a specification and buying-risk comparison rather than an FPS ranking.

Configuration Price evidence CPU GPU Memory Storage Screen Important qualification
Acer Nitro V configuration reported by TechRadar $699.99, reduced from $799.99 in a TechRadar report dated May 9, 2026 Intel Core i5-13420H RTX 4050 Laptop GPU 8GB 512GB SSD 15.6-inch FHD, 165Hz TechRadar stated it had not specifically reviewed this particular model. The price is a dated report, not a live guarantee. Confirm RAM upgradeability and the exact seller/SKU.
HP Victus 15-fa2047nr listed by HP US Not stated as under $800 on HP’s store listing 13th-generation Intel Core i5 RTX 4050 Laptop GPU with 6GB GDDR6 16GB 1TB SSD 15.6-inch FHD; refresh rate not stated in HP’s listing Check the current price, panel refresh rate and exact memory/storage configuration before treating it as a budget choice.

The Acer specification is attractive because the reported sale price leaves room in the budget and includes a 165Hz panel. Its 8GB memory is the clear compromise. The HP configuration is closer to the preferred 16GB/1TB balance, but HP’s listing does not prove that it sells for less than $800. You can inspect the HP configuration at HP’s US gaming-laptop store page.

The original deal report is available at TechRadar’s Acer Nitro V article. Because the article itself says the particular model was not specifically reviewed, do not turn the configuration into a guaranteed frame-rate claim.

How to inspect an exact listing before you buy

1. Record the full model identifier

Retailers often group multiple screen, memory and GPU combinations under one family name. Copy the complete model or product number, not just “Nitro V” or “Victus 15.” Compare that identifier across the manufacturer page, the retailer page and the checkout cart. A photograph can also reveal a different keyboard layout or panel than the text description.

2. Confirm the graphics implementation

Check that the listing says Laptop GPU and states the graphics-memory amount. The RTX 4050 name alone does not reveal the configured wattage, cooling or boost behavior. If wattage is not published, treat performance as uncertain rather than assuming the fastest version.

3. Check whether RAM can be expanded

For an 8GB machine, look for an accessible second slot, the maximum supported capacity and the memory type. A single 8GB module can also limit memory bandwidth compared with two matched modules. Do not buy an upgrade until the service manual or manufacturer specification confirms compatibility; a similarly named laptop may use a different board.

4. Read the panel specification beyond refresh rate

A 165Hz label is useful only if the panel has reasonable response behavior and the GPU can produce enough frames. Look for resolution, brightness and color information, and note whether the panel is described as adaptive-sync compatible. A fast but dim or slow-response display may be less satisfying than a slightly slower panel with better motion behavior.

5. Verify storage and expansion

Steam lists 85GB for the Windows installation of CS2. The operating system, updates and other games require additional space, so a 512GB drive can become cramped quickly. A 1TB SSD is more convenient, while a second M.2 slot can be valuable if the base drive is smaller. Confirm whether the advertised capacity is raw or usable and whether opening the chassis affects warranty terms in your region.

6. Check the return policy and seller

Prices and inventory move quickly. Before paying, confirm the seller, return period, warranty region, keyboard layout, included charger and whether the item is new, refurbished or open-box. Save a screenshot of the exact configuration and price because a product page can change after purchase.

Buying procedure for a strict $800 budget

  1. Set the complete budget. Reserve room for sales tax, shipping and, if necessary, a memory module. A laptop advertised at $799 may exceed the limit at checkout.
  2. Filter for the performance floor. Start with a recent Core i5 or Ryzen 5, dedicated RTX 4050-class graphics, 16GB RAM and a 1080p 144Hz-or-faster display. Relax only one requirement at a time.
  3. Compare complete SKUs. Put CPU, GPU memory, memory layout, SSD size, panel refresh rate and weight in a side-by-side note. Ignore a listing that omits a specification you consider essential until the manufacturer confirms it.
  4. Investigate an 8GB bargain. If an otherwise strong sale uses 8GB, verify that a second slot exists and price the upgrade. Include the upgrade cost in the $800 total.
  5. Check current availability immediately before checkout. The $699.99 Acer figure was reported on May 9, 2026; it may be expired, sold by a different seller or attached to another configuration by the time you shop.
  6. Keep evidence of what you ordered. Save the product number, memory and display details, then inspect Windows and the laptop’s system utility after delivery to ensure they match.

Set up a new laptop for consistent CS2 play

Install updates before judging performance

Complete Windows updates, install the current graphics driver supplied for the laptop, and reboot. Check the manufacturer’s support page for firmware or chipset updates specific to the exact model. Do not compare frame rates while a large update or cloud-sync job is running in the background.

Use wall power for matches

Gaming laptops generally reduce processor and graphics power on battery. Connect the supplied charger, select the system’s performance-oriented power mode when plugged in, and leave the machine on a hard surface with its intake and exhaust unobstructed. Battery play is useful for short sessions, but it is not the right basis for judging sustained competitive performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a sensible first graphics profile

Start at the panel’s native 1920×1080 resolution. Use the game’s frame-time or performance display to observe consistency, then adjust shadows, effects and anti-aliasing according to the result. Competitive players often prefer lower visual settings for clarity and latency, while casual players can raise quality if the frame-time graph remains stable. Do not promise a specific FPS without measurements from the exact laptop, driver and settings.

Measure the delivered experience

Play a repeatable workshop or practice scenario and then a normal online match. Watch for stutter, clock-speed drops, fan surges and unexpected resolution changes. Test with voice chat and the applications you normally use. A laptop that looks fast on an empty map may behave differently in a crowded firefight.

Thermals, noise and portability trade-offs

Under-$800 gaming laptops usually prioritize performance over silence and battery life. Two fans, warm surfaces and audible airflow during a match are normal. What matters is whether the system maintains clocks without severe stutter and whether the keyboard, palm rest and vents remain comfortable for your setup.

Weight and charger size are part of the decision. A machine carried to school or work every day may justify a slightly lower-power configuration, while a laptop that stays on a desk can favor a larger cooling system. The Acer and HP listings do not provide controlled noise, weight or battery measurements for those configurations, so treat those characteristics as listing checks rather than established differences.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying on the game’s minimum requirements

An 8GB laptop with a basic DirectX 11 GPU can satisfy the written minimum and still fail to deliver the smooth high-refresh experience many competitive players want. Use the minimums to reject incompatible hardware, not to select your ideal machine.

Assuming every RTX 4050 laptop is equivalent

Power limits, cooling and memory configurations vary. Ask for the exact product number and look for independent testing of that configuration. If no test exists, describe the machine by its specifications and leave FPS open.

Ignoring single-channel or non-upgradable memory

Two laptops with “8GB RAM” can have different upgrade paths. Confirm the number of modules and available slots before relying on a future upgrade. If the machine cannot reach 16GB, it is a poor fit for a multitasking gaming setup even when the GPU is attractive.

Paying for a high refresh number without checking the panel

Refresh rate is only one part of display quality. Brightness, response behavior and resolution determine whether the screen is comfortable and clear. A 165Hz screen is not automatically better in every other respect than a 144Hz screen.

Calling a dated sale a current price

The Acer price of $699.99 was reported for a specific date and configuration. Retail prices can rise, disappear or switch sellers. Recheck the live page and checkout total before using any deal as the basis for a recommendation.

Which type of buyer should choose which configuration?

Choose the Acer-style deal when the price is still live

An RTX 4050, Core i5-13420H and 165Hz FHD panel at a genuine price below $800 is a strong starting combination for CS2. Accept it only if the 8GB memory can be expanded at a reasonable cost and the exact panel and GPU configuration match the report. If an upgrade pushes the total over budget, the apparent bargain loses much of its value.

Choose the HP-style configuration when capacity and memory matter

The listed Victus configuration includes 16GB and a 1TB SSD, reducing the two most obvious compromises of many entry-level laptops. It becomes a budget recommendation only if the current price, screen refresh rate and warranty meet your limit. Verify those details because HP’s store page does not state an under-$800 price or a refresh rate.

Wait for another sale when neither fits

Do not force a purchase when every available model has 8GB of non-upgradable RAM, a 60Hz panel or an unspecified GPU power limit. Track complete configurations and be ready to buy when an RTX 4050 system with 16GB memory reaches the target price. A short wait is preferable to paying for a machine that requires immediate replacement parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical verdict

The best under-$800 CS2 laptop is not a single permanently available SKU. It is a balanced configuration: recent Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processing, RTX 4050-class graphics, 16GB dual-channel memory, an SSD and a 1080p panel at 144Hz or more. The reported Acer Nitro V sale shows how an RTX 4050 system can enter the budget, but its 8GB RAM requires verification and possibly an upgrade. The HP Victus listing demonstrates the more comfortable 16GB/1TB specification, while its price and refresh rate still need confirmation. Buy the exact configuration, not the family name, and treat every FPS expectation as unverified unless it comes from testing that exact laptop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a laptop with 8GB RAM run Counter-Strike 2?

Yes, 8GB meets Steam’s listed Windows minimum, but 16GB is a safer target for CS2 alongside Windows, voice chat and background applications. Check whether an 8GB model has a free upgrade slot before buying.

Is an RTX 4050 required for CS2?

No. Valve’s minimum specification is much lower. RTX 4050 is a buying target for a new competitive laptop because it leaves more graphics headroom; it is not an official requirement.

Does a 165Hz screen guarantee 165 FPS?

No. Refresh rate describes the panel’s maximum refresh capability. Actual frame rate depends on the exact CPU, GPU power limit, cooling, settings, drivers and match conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 512GB enough for CS2?

It can hold CS2 and Windows, but Steam lists 85GB for the Windows game installation and other software consumes additional space. A 1TB SSD or an available second-drive slot is more convenient.

Should I buy a laptop on battery for competitive matches?

Use the supplied charger for sustained gaming. Many laptops reduce CPU and GPU power on battery, so battery performance is not a reliable indicator of plugged-in match performance.
