For a stable internet match, start with sv_minrate 8000, sv_maxrate 25000, sv_minupdaterate 30, sv_maxupdaterate 100, sys_ticrate 100, and sv_unlag 1 on the server. On the client, begin with rate 25000, cl_updaterate 101, cl_cmdrate 101, ex_interp 0.01, and net_graph 3.
These are starting points, not a guarantee of lower ping, perfect hit registration, or a fixed frame rate. The server, client connection, route quality, CPU load, and game build determine the values that actually work. Adjust one variable at a time while watching the live network graph.

The client values are requests. A server can impose lower limits, so the numbers shown in the client console are not necessarily the values being used on the wire.
What “smooth” means in CS 1.6
Smooth play has several separate parts:
- Server simulation: the server must calculate game frames consistently.
- Snapshot delivery: the server must send enough updates for the client to track movement.
- Command delivery: the client must send movement and action commands regularly.
- Bandwidth headroom: the connection must sustain the requested traffic without queueing packets.
- Rendering and frame pacing: the client must render frames consistently rather than alternating between fast and slow frames.
A high updaterate cannot repair a saturated upload link, and a graphics tweak cannot repair packet loss. Diagnose the layer that is failing before changing unrelated commands.

sv_maxrate: the upper bandwidth limit
sv_maxrate limits the bytes per second the server will send to each client. The baseline value of 25000 leaves room for the client guide’s rate 25000 request. Raising it only helps when both the player’s connection and the route can sustain the additional traffic; it cannot create bandwidth that is not available.
sv_minrate: the lower bandwidth floor
sv_minrate 8000 prevents a client from negotiating an unnecessarily low receive rate. A higher floor can make a well-connected server more consistent, but it also excludes players on slow or unstable links. Set the floor according to the connection quality you intend to support rather than choosing the largest possible number.
sv_maxupdaterate: the snapshot ceiling
sv_maxupdaterate 100 caps the number of world snapshots a client can receive per second. Clients cannot receive more updates than this server-side ceiling. A value of 100 is a practical ceiling used by current CS 1.6 configuration guidance; it is not evidence that every connection will deliver 100 usable snapshots every second.
sv_minupdaterate: the snapshot floor
sv_minupdaterate 30 prevents extremely low snapshot rates. Increasing the floor may make movement look more continuous for capable players, but an aggressive minimum can worsen choke or instability for players whose links cannot sustain it. The conservative floor of 30 supports a wider range of connections.
How the limits interact
The server applies its limits to each client’s requests. A client asking for cl_updaterate 101 on a server capped at 100 will receive no more than the server permits. Likewise, a client asking for a rate below the server’s minimum may be raised to that minimum. Effective values can also change after a map change, plugin reload, configuration reload, or host migration.
Choosing sys_ticrate without destabilizing the server
sys_ticrate sets the maximum number of server calculation frames per second. The txdv.github.io CVar reference, accessed in 2026, lists a default of 100 and a documented range from 0 to 1000. Start at 100; do not treat a value of 500 or 1000 as an automatic smoothness upgrade.
Higher targets increase the amount of work the server may attempt. If the CPU cannot maintain the target, frame timing becomes inconsistent and players may experience irregular updates even though the configured number is larger. Check actual server FPS and CPU utilization during a full match, including firefights, before experimenting with a higher value. If either is strained, return to 100 or improve the host rather than increasing the target again.

Lag compensation
sv_unlag 1 keeps lag compensation enabled. The related compensation controls include sv_maxunlag; the txdv.github.io reference documents these controls but does not establish one universal value that is best for every server. Leave compensation enabled unless you have a specific, tested administrative reason to change it.

rate
rate is the client’s requested bytes-per-second receive rate. The configuration guide uses 25000 as a starting request, but the txdv.github.io CVar reference lists a default of 20000 bytes per second and a range of 1000–20000 for the relevant command reference. That discrepancy reflects differences between guides, game builds, or server implementations. Use the value your client accepts and verify the effective behavior with net_graph; never assume that entering 25000 guarantees 25000 bytes per second.
cl_updaterate
cl_updaterate 101 requests 101 server updates per second. The server’s sv_maxupdaterate remains authoritative, so a server capped at 100 will limit the effective rate. If your connection develops choke, lower the request rather than repeatedly raising it.
cl_cmdrate
cl_cmdrate 101 requests 101 client command packets per second. It affects how frequently movement and action commands are sent, subject to client performance and server behavior. Excessive command traffic on a constrained connection can contribute to congestion.
ex_interp
ex_interp 0.01 is a low-delay starting point in the current configuration guide. Interpolation is not independent of update timing, and the appropriate value depends on the server and the stream of updates you actually receive. Community discussion has included both automatic and manually calculated approaches, so there is no official Valve preset that resolves every case. If a server or configuration automatically adjusts interpolation, evaluate the resulting graph and movement rather than forcing a number for its own sake.
How to apply and verify a server configuration
- Open the instance’s active
server.cfg, not a similarly named backup or template file. - Add the server commands and save the file with plain-text encoding.
- Restart the server, or execute the file from the server console using the command your server setup supports.
- Print each CVar in the server console and record the returned value. This confirms that the file was loaded and that a later plugin or configuration has not overwritten it.
- Join from a test client and compare the client’s requested values with the server’s caps. The client cannot bypass a server-side limit.
- Repeat the check after map changes, plugin updates, or moving the instance to another host.
For self-hosting, monitor the process while several players are connected. For rented or managed CS 1.6 game-server hosting, use the provider’s documented console or file-management method and confirm that it permits the CVars you need; some services restrict server variables.
Graphics and frame-pacing adjustments
If the server and network look healthy but the game still feels uneven, test rendering changes separately from network changes:
gl_vsync 0disables vertical synchronization, which can reduce synchronization latency on some systems but may introduce tearing.gl_dynamic 0reduces dynamic lighting effects.cl_minmodels 1uses simplified player models where supported.- Reduce decals and other effects if they cause frame-time spikes.
- Choose an
fps_maxvalue that the machine can hold consistently instead of chasing a peak number it cannot sustain.
Some servers override restricted client variables. These settings affect local rendering only; they do not fix choke, loss, routing problems, or an overloaded server. Change one option at a time and observe frame pacing with net_graph 3.

- FPS: whether rendering remains stable.
- Ping: round-trip latency to the server; a higher value is not automatically packet loss.
- Choke: updates delayed or discarded because the available rate, buffers, or server delivery cannot keep up.
- Loss: packets that failed to arrive, usually indicating a route, wireless, ISP, host, or physical-link problem rather than a missing graphics command.
Red indicators in the graph are symptoms of connection or synchronization trouble, not proof that one universal preset is required. Keep a short record of the values before and after each change so that you can reverse a change that makes the graph worse.
Fixing choke, loss, and inconsistent play
When choke appears
- Confirm that the server is not already CPU-bound and that its effective update rate is stable.
- Lower the client’s requested
rateor updaterate in small steps until choke disappears or decreases. - Check whether another device or application is consuming the connection’s upload or download capacity.
- If only one server produces choke, compare its caps and host performance with another server before changing every client setting.
When loss appears
- Test a wired connection if possible and pause large downloads, uploads, and background synchronization.
- Compare results on another server or route. Loss that follows the player points toward the local network or ISP; loss limited to one server points toward that route or host.
- Do not respond by blindly increasing
rate,cl_cmdrate, orcl_updaterate; more requested traffic can worsen congestion. - Contact the host or network provider when loss persists after local checks. A CVar cannot repair dropped packets outside the game.
When FPS is low but networking is clean
Use the rendering checklist instead of changing rates. Lower effects, test vertical synchronization, simplify models, and select a sustainable fps_max. If FPS falls only during effects-heavy scenes, the bottleneck is local rendering rather than the server’s snapshot settings.
When settings seem to revert
Check the active configuration file, the order in which files execute, server plugins, map-specific configs, and host migrations. Print values in the server console and reconnect after a map change to identify which component is rewriting them.
Interpreting effective values in a real match
Do not judge a configuration from the console immediately after joining an empty server. First let the client settle, then observe a quiet round and a firefight. A server may accept a requested value while delivering fewer usable updates because of CPU load, route congestion, or a restrictive cap. The useful question is not whether a command was entered successfully, but whether FPS, choke, loss, and movement remain stable under normal load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare like with like when testing. Use the same map, similar player count, and the same connection whenever possible. If one server shows stable values while another shows choke, leave the working client settings alone and investigate the second server’s caps, plugins, or host performance. If every server shows the same symptom, the common factor is more likely the client, local network, or ISP.
Keep a small log with the date, server name, requested values, effective caps, and net-graph readings. This prevents a familiar number such as 101 from becoming a superstition and makes it easier to undo a change that increased congestion.
A repeatable tuning procedure
- Begin with the conservative server block and the client block shown above.
- Print
sv_minrate,sv_maxrate,sv_minupdaterate,sv_maxupdaterate, andsys_ticratein the server console. - Verify server CPU utilization and actual server FPS with several players connected. Keep
sys_ticrate 100if the host is healthy. - Enable
net_graph 3and record FPS, ping, choke, and loss during both calm play and firefights. - If choke rises, reduce the requested
rateor updaterate gradually. Do not raise all network values at once. - If loss rises, test the local link, another route, and another server instead of increasing traffic requests.
- Only after network readings are stable, test
ex_interp, rendering commands, and a sustainablefps_max, changing one item per test.
This order separates server simulation, delivery, and rendering problems. It also gives administrators a defensible rollback point: the last configuration that produced stable readings.
Server authority versus client requests
| Setting | Who controls the limit? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
sv_maxrate |
Server | Whether the client can sustain the permitted bytes per second |
sv_minrate |
Server | Whether the floor excludes slower or unstable connections |
sv_maxupdaterate |
Server | Whether the client’s updaterate request is being capped |
sv_minupdaterate |
Server | Whether the floor creates choke for weak links |
rate |
Client request, server-capped | Net-graph behavior rather than the typed number alone |
cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate |
Client requests within server behavior | Choke, loss, and consistency during busy play |
This distinction explains why copying another player’s config may not reproduce their results. Their server may have different caps, plugins, hardware, or routes, and their connection may have more bandwidth headroom.

Hosting and administration checks
On a self-hosted instance, watch CPU use and server FPS throughout a match rather than only at startup. On managed GoldSrc dedicated server hosting, verify how server.cfg is loaded, whether a control panel rewrites it, and which CVars the provider permits. A host migration or plugin update can silently change effective limits, so repeat the console check after maintenance.

There is no single hosting configuration that guarantees a fixed ping or hit-registration result. The relevant requirements are a host that can maintain the selected server calculation rate, enough network capacity for the intended players, and access to the configuration and console controls needed to verify values.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming 101 is always better: 101 is a request, not a guaranteed effective rate.
- Raising
sys_ticratefirst: a higher target can increase CPU pressure without improving consistency. - Confusing ping with loss: latency and dropped packets require different investigations.
- Using graphics commands to solve network problems: local rendering changes cannot restore missing packets.
- Ignoring the server’s actual values: server caps and plugins determine what the client can receive.
- Changing many variables at once: you lose the ability to identify which change helped or harmed the connection.
What is officially established
Valve’s networking documentation explains the roles of rate and server-side caps but does not publish one CS 1.6 “best settings” preset. ValveSoftware issue #3109, opened June 1, 2021, records community questions about ex_interp, rate, FPS, and sys_ticrate, including conflicting interpretations rather than an endorsed universal recipe. Steam Support directs players toward community-created configuration guidance for technical issues.
The txdv.github.io CVar reference, accessed in 2026, lists rate with a 20000-byte-per-second default and a 1000–20000 range, sv_maxupdaterate with a default of 30, sv_minupdaterate with a default of 10, and sys_ticrate with a default of 100 and a 0–1000 documented range. Defaults can vary with game build, server modification, or hosting environment, so verify the live values instead of relying on a remembered preset.
Practical FAQ
Use these answers as decision rules rather than as replacement presets.
Do I need cl_updaterate 101 and cl_cmdrate 101?
No. They are starting requests from a current CS 1.6 configuration guide. A server capped at 100 will not deliver more than its cap, and a connection that cannot sustain the requested traffic may show choke. Keep the values only when the graph remains stable and the server permits them.
Why does the guide say rate 25000 when a CVar reference shows 20000?
The two figures describe different references or implementations. The txdv.github.io entry lists a 20000 default and a 1000–20000 range, while the current configuration guide recommends 25000. Enter the value your client accepts, check the server’s sv_maxrate, and judge the result from effective behavior rather than assuming either number is universal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is sys_ticrate 1000 better than 100?
Not automatically. The documented range reaches 1000, but higher targets can increase CPU demand and produce less consistent timing when the host cannot keep up. Start at 100, measure actual server FPS and CPU use during a full match, and change it only when testing shows a stable benefit.
What should I do when choke appears after raising rates?
First confirm that the server is not CPU-bound. Then lower the requested rate or updaterate in small steps, check competing traffic on the connection, and compare another server. More traffic is not a cure when the route or buffers are already saturated.
What should I do when net graph shows loss?
Test wired networking, pause downloads and uploads, compare another route or server, and contact the host or ISP if the loss persists. Loss points to dropped packets on the local link, route, ISP, or host; raising client rates or changing graphics settings cannot restore them.

Can gl_vsync 0 or cl_minmodels 1 lower my ping?
No. Those commands affect local rendering and frame pacing. They may reduce frame-time spikes on some systems, but they do not change routing, server snapshots, choke, or loss. Use net_graph 3 to determine whether the problem is FPS or networking.

It is a low-delay starting point, not an official universal value. Interpolation depends on the update stream and server behavior, and community discussion includes automatic and manual approaches. Test it with the graph and observed movement, and avoid forcing it when a server configuration adjusts interpolation.
Why do my settings change after a map change?
Map-specific files, plugins, configuration reloads, or host migrations may rewrite limits. Print the CVars in the server console after joining the new map, verify the active file and execution order, and repeat the check after plugin or host changes.
What should I verify with a managed server host?
Confirm how the provider loads server.cfg, which CVars are permitted, how console access works, and whether plugins or migrations can replace settings. The important test is sustained server FPS and stable net-graph readings with your intended player load, not a provider’s promise of a universal preset.

- Recheck after map, plugin, or host changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best basic CS 1.6 server settings?
Start with sv_minrate 8000, sv_maxrate 25000, sv_minupdaterate 30, sv_maxupdaterate 100, sys_ticrate 100, and sv_unlag 1. Verify the live values and adjust only after checking CPU use and net_graph 3.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why do I still get choke after changing rates?
The connection, buffers, server delivery, or CPU may not sustain the requested traffic. Lower rate or updaterate gradually, check competing traffic, and compare another server instead of raising every value.
Does a higher sys_ticrate guarantee smoother gameplay?
No. Higher targets can increase CPU pressure. Keep 100 unless measurements during a full match show that the host can maintain a higher target consistently.
Can client settings bypass server limits?
No. sv_maxrate, sv_minrate, sv_maxupdaterate, and sv_minupdaterate are server-side limits. Client commands are requests within those limits.
What is the difference between choke and loss?
Choke indicates that updates cannot be delivered at the requested rate; loss indicates packets failed to arrive. Lower requested traffic for choke, but investigate the local link, route, ISP, or host for loss.

No. Commands such as gl_vsync 0, gl_dynamic 0, and cl_minmodels 1 affect rendering only. Use net_graph 3 to separate FPS problems from network problems.
Is ex_interp 0.01 an official Valve requirement?
No. It is a low-delay starting point from a current configuration guide. The appropriate interpolation depends on update timing and server behavior, and no universal Valve preset resolves every case.
The Bottom Line
Use the conservative server block, request rate 25000, cl_updaterate 101, and cl_cmdrate 101 on the client, and keep sys_ticrate 100 until measurements justify a change. Verify effective caps, watch net_graph 3, reduce requests when choke appears, and troubleshoot loss as a network or hosting problem rather than a graphics setting.
