The best credit card for New York City depends on where your money goes: OMNY and commuter rail, restaurants and delivery, Amazon and Whole Foods, or entertainment. No single card leads every category.
For broad NYC transit and dining rewards, the American Express® Green Card is the most complete fit, but its $150 annual fee requires meaningful spending. If you want no annual fee, the Prime Visa and Amazon Visa are notable because Chase explicitly includes local transit and commuting in their rewards categories. For restaurant-heavy spending, the Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card and Chase Freedom Unlimited® are simpler choices.

1. American Express Green Card: best overall for NYC transit and dining
The Green Card is the strongest all-rounder if your spending is split between getting around the city and eating out. It earns 3 Membership Rewards points per $1 on travel and transit, including trains, taxis, rideshare services, parking, tolls and other transit. It also earns 3 points per $1 at restaurants worldwide, including U.S. takeout and delivery.
#1 Best Overall
That combination covers more of a typical New York budget than a card focused only on restaurants. Subway and commuter-rail charges, taxis, Uber or Lyft rides, restaurant checks, delivery orders and takeout can all fit the card’s broad travel, transit or dining categories.
The drawback is the $150 annual fee. At a basic value of one cent per point, $150 in annual spending earns approximately $4.50 in points for every $150 spent in a 3x category. You would need about $5,000 in qualifying annual spending to generate $150 in rewards at that simple redemption value, before considering any other benefits or higher-value point redemptions.
Choose it when you regularly use several transit modes and spend heavily on restaurants. Skip it if your only major NYC expense is an occasional subway ride.
2. Chase Freedom Unlimited: best no-fee card for dining
The Freedom Unlimited is a straightforward choice for New Yorkers who want dining rewards without paying an annual fee. It earns 3% cash back on dining and drugstores, 5% on travel purchased through Chase Travel, and at least 1.5% on other purchases.
Its published terms do not list ordinary NYC subway, bus or other transit purchases as a 3% category. That makes it a dining card rather than a dedicated OMNY card. Use it at restaurants, cafés and similar dining merchants, but do not assume a tap at an OMNY terminal will receive the dining rate.
Chase currently shows a $200 bonus after $500 in purchases during the first three months. The card also shows a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, followed by a variable APR of 18.24%–27.74%. A promotional APR should not be used as a reason to spend beyond your repayment plan.

3. Capital One Savor: best for restaurants, entertainment and groceries
The $0-annual-fee Savor is well suited to a city budget that includes restaurants, bars, bakeries, concerts, movie theaters and qualifying grocery stores. It earns unlimited 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, grocery stores and popular streaming services.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Capital One’s dining definition includes restaurants, cafés, bars, lounges, fast-food chains and bakeries. Its entertainment category includes movie theaters, live-event promoters, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos, dance halls, record stores, pool halls and bowling alleys. That is useful in NYC, where entertainment purchases can be as regular as restaurant spending.
The card has important classification limits:
- Walmart and Target are excluded from the grocery category because they are treated as superstores.
- Food sold inside a larger establishment may not code as dining.
- Some food trucks and food carts may not transmit a dining merchant category.
- Golf courses, collegiate sporting events and some non-industry entertainment codes are excluded from the entertainment category.
- Purchases processed through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, mobile wallets or similar technology may not receive the elevated rate, depending on how the transaction is coded.
Capital One currently shows a $250 bonus after $500 in purchases within the first three months, subject to its eligibility restriction for people who previously received a bonus on the product.
4. Prime Visa: best for Prime members who use transit and Amazon
The Prime Visa is unusually relevant to NYC because its published rewards include local transit and commuting, including rideshare, alongside restaurants. It earns 2% in those categories and 1% elsewhere. With an eligible Prime membership, it earns 5% at Amazon.com, Audible.com, Whole Foods Market and Chase Travel.
This is a practical two-card-role option for someone who orders frequently from Amazon, shops at Whole Foods and regularly pays for rideshare, restaurants or local commuting. It has no annual fee, although the cost of the Prime membership still matters when judging the overall value.

Chase currently shows a $200 Amazon Gift Card instantly on approval for Prime members. The 5% Amazon, Whole Foods and Chase Travel rate depends on eligible Prime membership; the published 2% restaurant and local-transit categories are listed separately.
5. Amazon Visa: best for Amazon shoppers without Prime
The Amazon Visa keeps the same published 2% rewards rate at restaurants and local transit or commuting, including rideshare, but its Amazon, Audible, Whole Foods and Chase Travel rate is 3% rather than the Prime Visa’s 5% rate.
It has no annual fee and currently offers a $50 Amazon Gift Card instantly on approval. For a New Yorker who does not maintain Prime but wants one card for Amazon purchases, restaurant bills and rideshare, it is more logical than applying for a card that requires a paid membership.
Neither the Prime Visa nor Amazon Visa should be treated as a guaranteed 2% card for every possible transportation charge. Rewards depend on how the merchant or transit operator submits the transaction, and issuer category definitions can exclude transactions that look similar to the customer.
6. DoorDash Rewards Mastercard: best for delivery-heavy spending
The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard is aimed at a narrower pattern: frequent DoorDash or Caviar orders and direct restaurant purchases. It earns 4% on DoorDash and Caviar orders, 3% on dining purchased directly from a restaurant, 2% at grocery stores and 1% elsewhere.
The distinction between “through DoorDash” and “directly from a restaurant” matters. A DoorDash order receives the separate 4% rate; paying the restaurant itself receives the 3% dining rate. It is not a general NYC transit card.
Approved applicants receive a free year of DashPass, but DashPass auto-renews at $96 per year unless canceled. Set a calendar reminder before the free period ends if you do not want the charge.

Do not confuse a rewards credit card with a commuter benefit or Fair Fares discount.

Fair Fares NYC switched from MetroCard to OMNY in February 2025 and no longer issues Fair Fares MetroCards. Fair Fares OMNY cards cover the subway, buses, Staten Island Railway, Roosevelt Island Tram and Hudson Rail Link. Express buses are permitted, but the full fare is charged.
Existing Fair Fares customers can switch through ACCESS HRA → “Switch Fair Fares Discount from MetroCard to OMNY.” A remaining Fair Fares MetroCard balance cannot be transferred to a Fair Fares OMNY card. Use the balance before the MetroCard expires or is canceled. See the NYC Fair Fares OMNY instructions.
The NYC Commuter Card
The NYC Commuter Card is a stored-value debit card, not an unlimited transit pass. It can be tapped at OMNY terminals and added to a phone’s digital wallet, but it can only spend the amount funded in the Edenred account.
For 2026, NYC’s Commuter Card page states that payroll deductions up to $340 per month are pre-tax; amounts above $340 are post-tax. The card must be activated before use.

The City lists two options:
- Commuter Card – No Admin Fee: uses a preset $140 monthly payroll deduction.
- Commuter Card – Unrestricted: allows any monthly pre-tax deduction up to $340.
If your employer offers the commuter benefit, the tax savings may be more valuable than the rewards from putting transit on a credit card. Review the NYC Commuter Card details before choosing a rewards strategy.

Which card should you choose?
- Choose the Amex Green if you spend substantially on both NYC transportation and dining and can justify the $150 fee.
- Choose Freedom Unlimited if you want a no-fee dining card and do not need a specifically published transit bonus.
- Choose Capital One Savor if your budget includes restaurants, entertainment, groceries and streaming services.
- Choose Prime Visa if you have eligible Prime membership and want 5% Amazon and Whole Foods rewards plus 2% on local transit and restaurants.
- Choose Amazon Visa if you want those published 2% restaurant and local-transit categories without Prime.
- Choose DoorDash Rewards Mastercard only if DoorDash, Caviar and restaurant spending dominate your card use.
How to avoid losing bonus rewards
- Check the merchant category, not just the business name. A food hall vendor, food cart, stadium concession or restaurant inside another business may code differently from a standalone restaurant.
- Be cautious with wallets and intermediary payment systems. A mobile-wallet or third-party transaction can be processed under a category that does not qualify for the advertised bonus, particularly where the issuer warns about payment technology.
- Separate delivery categories. On the DoorDash card, DoorDash and Caviar orders receive 4%; direct restaurant purchases receive 3%.
- Track annual-fee break-even. A 3x points card is not automatically better than a 3% cash-back card. Compare redemption value, fee, benefits and the spending categories you actually use.
- Pay the statement balance whenever possible. Interest can erase rewards quickly, especially after a 0% introductory period ends.
FAQ
What is the best credit card for NYC subway and transit spending?
The American Express Green Card has the broadest published 3-points-per-$1 travel and transit category, including trains, taxis, rideshare, parking, tolls and other transit. The Prime Visa and Amazon Visa explicitly publish 2% rewards for local transit and commuting, including rideshare, with no annual fee.
Does the NYC Commuter Card replace a credit card?
No. It is a stored-value debit card funded through payroll deductions, not an unlimited pass. For 2026, NYC states that deductions up to $340 per month are pre-tax, subject to the program’s rules.
Can Fair Fares MetroCard money move to OMNY?
No. NYC Fair Fares says balances cannot be transferred from a Fair Fares MetroCard to a Fair Fares OMNY card. Use the remaining balance before the MetroCard expires or is canceled.
Is Capital One Savor good for NYC restaurants?
Yes. It earns unlimited 3% cash back on qualifying dining, including restaurants, cafés, bars, lounges, fast-food chains and bakeries. Some food carts, food trucks, food sellers inside larger businesses and transactions processed through certain payment methods may not receive the dining rate.
Which card is best for DoorDash in New York City?
The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard earns 4% on DoorDash and Caviar orders. It earns 3% when dining is purchased directly from a restaurant. Its free DashPass benefit auto-renews at $96 per year unless canceled.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The American Express Green Card is the best broad NYC fit when transit and dining are both major expenses. Capital One Savor and Chase Freedom Unlimited are better no-fee choices for restaurant-heavy spending. Prime Visa and Amazon Visa stand out for their explicitly published local-transit category, while DoorDash Rewards Mastercard is best reserved for frequent delivery users. Before applying, compare the annual fee, confirm the current terms and check whether an employer commuter benefit can reduce your taxable income more effectively than card rewards.
