No named Pokémon can be verified as the best Dragon counter in Pokémon Winds & Waves yet. The games are planned for a simultaneous worldwide release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, but the announcement does not identify their Pokédex, Dragon encounters, moves, abilities, battle formats, or any type-chart changes. For now, prepare access to reliable Ice, Dragon, and Fairy attacks: those are the three types listed as super-effective against a pure Dragon-type target on the current official chart.

What is currently super effective against Dragon Pokémon?

Under the latest official Pokémon type chart, attacks of these types are super-effective against a pure Dragon-type target:

Attacking type Result against a pure Dragon target How to use that information now
Ice Super effective Keep a dependable Ice attack available, especially if a future team member can use it without sacrificing speed or survivability.
Dragon Super effective Useful for direct damage, but a Dragon user may face a mirror matchup and must survive the opponent’s own Dragon attacks.
Fairy Super effective A strong provisional choice when a Pokémon can use a reliable Fairy attack and avoid the target’s coverage.

The chart applies to a pure Dragon typing. It is a starting framework rather than a confirmed Winds & Waves battle rule. The Pokémon Company notes that its chart is based on the latest game in the series and that type affinity may differ by game. The official Dratini Pokédex information likewise identifies Ice, Dragon, and Fairy as effective attacking types against Dragon.

Why an exact Winds & Waves counter cannot be named yet

The official announcement confirms that Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are new Nintendo Switch 2 role-playing games planned for 2027. It does not publish a regional Pokédex, Dragon-type roster, encounter locations, learnsets, abilities, trainer teams, battle rules, or a revised type chart. Without those details, naming a particular species as the “best” counter would be speculation.

That missing information matters because a counter is more than an attacking type. The final answer could change according to:

  • Whether the target is pure Dragon or has a second type.
  • Which Ice, Dragon, and Fairy moves are obtainable, and when they become available.
  • Whether Winds and Waves use the familiar battle rules or introduce different interactions.
  • The target’s ability, statistics, held item, weather, terrain, or scripted battle effects.
  • Whether the encounter is a one-on-one fight, a double battle, a boss sequence, or another format.
  • Which species and moves are available in each version.

Until those facts are published, the defensible recommendation is to build coverage rather than commit to an unverified species.

How to prepare a provisional Dragon counter

1. Secure at least one super-effective attack

Build a team member that can deliver a strong Ice-, Fairy-, or Dragon-type move. The move’s type is the first requirement; its practical value also depends on accuracy, power, usable stats, and whether the Pokémon can act before the Dragon target.

2. Prefer reliable moves over theoretical coverage

A move that is technically super-effective is not useful if it is inaccurate, unavailable until the end of the story, restricted by a special resource, or poorly matched to the user’s attacking stat. When Winds & Waves publishes its move list, compare reliability and availability alongside type effectiveness.

3. Keep a second answer on the roster

Do not make the entire team dependent on one attacking type. A Dragon may carry coverage that punishes the first counter you try, or a battle may prevent that Pokémon from entering safely. The official battle guidance recommends diverse type and move coverage because type advantages increase damage. In practice, that means carrying at least two ways to pressure a Dragon target rather than relying on one move or one switch-in.

Ice, Dragon, or Fairy: which approach is better?

There is no universal winner before the games’ mechanics and encounters are known. Choose according to the role your team needs.

Approach Strength Risk to check in Winds & Waves Best provisional use
Ice attack Provides super-effective pressure without requiring a Dragon mirror matchup. The user may be slow, fragile, or unable to obtain a strong Ice move early. Use when you can attack first or safely absorb one hit.
Dragon attack Direct damage from a type already confirmed as effective against pure Dragon. Your Pokémon may share the target’s vulnerability to Dragon attacks, making a speed tie or knockout race dangerous. Use with a faster or sturdier attacker and a backup plan.
Fairy attack Offers super-effective pressure while potentially giving your team a different defensive profile. The game may alter type interactions, and the best Fairy moves or users may not be available early. Use when the available Pokémon can learn a dependable Fairy move and match the encounter’s speed and defenses.

These are attacking options, not guarantees that a Pokémon of the same type is safe. A Fairy-type Pokémon, for example, could still have a secondary typing or ability that changes the matchup. Evaluate the move and the whole Pokémon, not the label alone.

Secondary typing can change the answer

The three weaknesses above describe a pure Dragon target. A dual-typed Pokémon combines the interactions of both types, so its final weaknesses, resistances, and immunities can differ from the pure-type chart. A second type can increase the damage from one of these attacks, reduce it, remove it, or add entirely different threats.

When an official Winds & Waves entry reveals a Dragon encounter, check the complete defensive profile before choosing a move. Record:

  • Both listed types, not just the Dragon half.
  • Whether Ice, Dragon, or Fairy receives the expected advantage after both types are applied.
  • Any additional weaknesses that let another team member contribute.
  • Resistances that make a nominally super-effective move a poor practical choice because of the user’s low power or accuracy.

If the target changes form during battle, check each form separately. Do not assume that a weakness shown for one phase remains valid for the next.

Abilities, speed, defenses, and battle format

Abilities and immunities

An ability can modify, reduce, redirect, or nullify damage. A super-effective type on the chart does not override an ability that blocks the move or changes how the attack is calculated. Once abilities are revealed, inspect the target’s ability before selecting your lead and confirm whether your chosen attack is affected.

Speed and priority

Type advantage only helps if the attack can be used. A slower counter may be knocked out first, forced to switch, or prevented from using its move. Compare confirmed speed statistics, priority options, and any field effects when the games provide them. If speed is uncertain, bring a second Pokémon that can survive a hit or use a priority move if one is available.

Physical and special defenses

Two moves with the same advantageous type can perform very differently if one strikes the target’s stronger defensive side or if the user’s relevant attacking stat is weak. Check whether each candidate attacks physically or specially, then match it to the Dragon’s lower confirmed defense. Do not infer this from species typing alone.

Single, double, and scripted battles

A counter that works in a one-on-one battle may be poor in a double battle where spread attacks, partner targeting, or turn order matter. Story bosses can also use fixed moves, weather, terrain, or phases that ordinary wild encounters do not. Wait for the Winds & Waves battle format and encounter details before treating a matchup as settled.

A practical team-building plan before release

  1. Reserve one slot for Ice coverage. Choose a team member that can plausibly learn a reliable Ice attack without undermining your normal story progression.
  2. Reserve one slot for Fairy or Dragon coverage. This gives you a second super-effective route if the first user is countered by speed, ability, or secondary typing.
  3. Check move access as soon as official learnsets appear. Note level-up moves, technical items, tutors, breeding requirements, and version restrictions.
  4. Build a safe switch. Select a Pokémon that can enter after a knockout or resisted hit and survive the Dragon’s known coverage.
  5. Test both physical and special options. Keep whichever side matches the confirmed target defenses and your team’s stronger attacking stats.
  6. Leave room for version differences. Winds and Waves may not share every species, encounter, or move, so verify availability in the specific game you plan to play.

How to compare named counters when official data arrives

When the Pokédex and battle information are published, rank candidates using the same checklist instead of choosing solely by type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison point Question to answer Why it changes the ranking
Type effectiveness Does the move remain super-effective after all secondary typing and form changes? A pure Dragon result may not apply to a dual-typed target.
Ability interaction Can either ability block, redirect, weaken, or otherwise alter the attack? Chart advantage may not translate into damage.
Speed and priority Does the candidate move first, or have a way to act before a knockout? The strongest move is irrelevant if the user cannot execute it.
Defensive bulk Can it survive the target’s known Dragon and coverage moves? A one-hit counter is more useful when it can switch in safely.
Move quality Is the attack accurate, sufficiently powerful, and repeatable? Reliable damage matters over a full battle.
Availability Can you obtain the Pokémon and move before the encounter? A late-game option cannot solve an earlier story battle.
Version access Is it present in Winds, Waves, or both? Version-specific availability can eliminate otherwise ideal candidates.

This framework produces a real “best counter” only after the relevant data exists. Until then, a list of named species would imply certainty the announcement does not support.

What to verify before a Dragon battle

  • Confirm the target’s complete typing and current form.
  • Read its revealed ability and any battle-specific effect.
  • Check whether the encounter changes weather, terrain, speed, or move power.
  • Bring at least one accurate Ice, Fairy, or Dragon attack.
  • Carry a second super-effective option in case the first user is slower, disabled, or knocked out.
  • Match the move’s physical or special category to the target’s weaker defense when those statistics are known.
  • Check item, healing, and switching rules for the battle format.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming every Dragon has the same weaknesses

The Ice, Dragon, and Fairy result is for a pure Dragon target. Secondary typing can change the outcome, so inspect the complete entry first.

Choosing a Pokémon solely because it is Fairy-, Ice-, or Dragon-type

Defensive typing does not guarantee access to a useful attack, sufficient speed, or survival against coverage. Confirm the actual move, stats, ability, and availability.

Treating the current chart as a Winds & Waves guarantee

The official chart itself warns that type affinity may differ by game. Use it for provisional planning, then replace it with the games’ published rules.

Ignoring version and timing

A counter is only practical if it can be obtained in the version and chapter where the Dragon appears. Compare encounter locations and move access once those details are announced.

When this guide can become specific

The provisional advice should be replaced as soon as official Winds & Waves data answers four questions: which Dragon Pokémon appear, what their complete typings and abilities are, which attacks and species are obtainable before each encounter, and whether the games modify the type chart or battle rules. At that point, compare named candidates using effectiveness, secondary typing, abilities, speed, defenses, move reliability, encounter timing, and version availability.

For the information available now, prepare broad Ice, Fairy, and Dragon coverage rather than searching for a confirmed species that has not been announced.
