The best Core Keeper mod depends on what you want to change. For storage, start with Expanded Chest UI or Double Chest Inventory; for farming, compare AutoPlant2 with Auto Replant; for exploration, Scenes+ is the major content expansion; and for combat readability, look at Boss Health Bar, Enemy Health Bars, or Improved Buff List. MiniBalance suits players who want lighter balance and quality-of-life changes.

There is no authoritative universal ranking. Treat each recommendation as a use-case choice, then check its supported game version, client/server scope, dependencies, update date, and multiplayer requirements before installing.

What counts as a “best” Core Keeper mod in 2026?

A mod is “best” only in relation to a specific problem. A storage overhaul can make a large base manageable while undermining the limits that make inventory planning meaningful. An automation mod can remove repetitive work but change the pace of farming. A visual interface mod can improve a solo player’s information without requiring every player on a server to install it, while a gameplay or world-generation mod may need coordinated installation.

Take on the challenge, explore the depths and build your legacy in Core Keeper, coming soon to Nintendo Switch!
  • Supported game version: The listing should identify the Core Keeper version it supports. A mod that worked on an older build may load incorrectly or fail after an update.
  • Scope: Look for a client-side, server-side, or client-and-server designation. Scope determines who must install the mod.
  • Multiplayer behavior: A listing should explain whether a host, dedicated server, or every connected player needs the files.
  • Progression impact: Decide whether the mod preserves the intended survival and crafting limits or substantially changes them.
  • Update recency: Check the last update date and recent comments for signs that the author is maintaining the project.
  • Dependencies: Install any required framework or library listed by the author, and verify that dependency versions match.
  • Save reversibility: Cosmetic and interface changes are usually easier to remove than mods that add scenes, items, recipes, or world data.

The official Core Keeper mod ecosystem is split across two discovery surfaces. mod.io describes itself as the official source for community mods built with the official Mod SDK. Steam Workshop offers a browse-and-subscribe interface for mods and maps. Both surfaces expose useful metadata, but neither creates a permanent ranking of quality.

Where to find Core Keeper mods

mod.io: the official mod catalog

Use mod.io when you want the catalog associated with the official Mod SDK, detailed descriptions, and explicit compatibility information. The 2026 catalog snapshot showed 110 collections and approximately 169,000 total downloads across the Core Keeper mod index. Those figures are time-sensitive platform metadata, not a quality score: downloads can reflect age, visibility, or a mod’s scope rather than whether it fits your world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the full listing rather than relying on its title. Confirm the supported Core Keeper version, whether it is client-side or server-side, dependencies, configuration options, and the author’s installation notes. A high download count does not override a missing update or an incompatible server designation.

Steam Workshop: subscribe-and-restart convenience

Steam Workshop is the quickest route for players who want a built-in browsing workflow. The official installation page says to subscribe to a Workshop item and restart the game. Workshop also provides a separate browse surface for maps and visual or interface mods.

A 2026 browse snapshot contained 249 Workshop collection entries matching the displayed view. That number changes as users publish, update, or remove content. Use the item’s current description and compatibility notes rather than treating the snapshot as a fixed catalog.

Best mods by player goal

Goal Mod or group What the listing says Checks before use Main trade-off
Lighter balance and quality of life MiniBalance “Some balance and QoL in weapons, gear and food.” Confirm the supported game version, scope, dependencies, and which items or recipes are changed. May alter progression in an established world.
More exploration content Scenes+ Adds over 100 new scenes. Check world/save guidance, update date, scope, and whether existing worlds are supported. More content can increase world complexity and make removal less reversible.
Easier storage management Expanded Chest UI Replaces the default chest interface with a more expandable, scrollable UI. Verify client/server requirements and multiplayer consistency. Interface convenience may depend on every player seeing the same UI behavior.
More storage capacity Double Chest Inventory Doubles all chest inventory space, including modded chests. Check whether the change applies to your chest mods and whether it affects existing inventories. Strongly reduces storage pressure and changes inventory balance.
Farming automation AutoPlant2 Listed as server-side. Install and configure it on the server or host as the listing requires. Automation affects everyone sharing that world.
Farming automation Auto Replant Replants harvested crops using a seed from inventory and exposes a configurable golden-crop chance. Confirm who needs the mod and review the golden-crop setting before enabling it. Can remove repeated planting work and alter rare-crop expectations.
Combat information Boss Health Bar; Enemy Health Bars Workshop visual/UI results focused on health readability. Check current Workshop compatibility and whether the UI is client-only or shared. More on-screen information can increase clutter.
Buff information Improved Buff List Workshop visual/UI result focused on presenting buffs more clearly. Check supported version, display behavior, and multiplayer scope. Readability gains depend on your preferred HUD density.

Detailed picks and who should use them

MiniBalance for restrained changes

MiniBalance is the shortlist choice for players who want adjustments to weapons, gear, and food without committing to a large content pack. Its mod.io description characterizes it as “Some balance and QoL in weapons, gear and food,” which signals a mixed package rather than a single interface fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install it at the start of a new world when possible. In an established world, compare the description against your current progression: changes to damage, equipment effectiveness, food values, or recipes can make existing milestones easier or harder. Record the original mod version and keep a backup of the world before enabling it. If friends join, tell them that the mod changes gameplay rules rather than merely changing the HUD.

Scenes+ for exploration-focused worlds

Scenes+ is the content-expansion pick. Its mod.io listing says it adds over 100 new scenes, making it substantially broader than a small interface tweak. That scale is attractive for a fresh exploration playthrough or a group that has already seen much of the base world.

Because scene and world content can be written into a save, treat this as less reversible than a UI mod. Check whether the current listing gives instructions for existing worlds, map generation, or removal. For a dedicated server, install it only after confirming the server designation and making the mod set visible to every player who connects. Keep a separate backup before the first launch with the mod enabled.

Expanded Chest UI for searchable, scrollable storage

Expanded Chest UI replaces the default chest interface with an expandable, scrollable presentation. It addresses the problem of navigating many containers without increasing the underlying capacity of each chest.

This is the better fit when your frustration is the interface itself: too many rows, awkward scrolling, or difficulty locating items. Confirm whether the listing marks it as client-only or requires server installation. In multiplayer, test a chest with another player before reorganizing an entire base. If one client renders the interface differently, agree on a common configuration or remove the mod before moving critical items.

Double Chest Inventory for maximum capacity

Double Chest Inventory takes a more direct approach by doubling all chest inventory space, including modded chests. Choose it when container limits, rather than navigation, are the bottleneck.

This is a meaningful balance change. Doubling capacity reduces the number of chests needed, lowers the cost of base expansion, and can affect how much material a player carries between trips. It is best suited to a relaxed or convenience-focused world. If you are preserving a progression challenge, Expanded Chest UI is the less intrusive first test because it changes presentation rather than capacity.

AutoPlant2 and Auto Replant for farming work

AutoPlant2 is listed as server-side, so treat it as a world rule controlled by the host or dedicated server. Confirm the installation location and server support before asking clients to subscribe. A server-side automation mod can affect every farm in the world even when individual players do not install a separate client package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto Replant targets a narrower task: after harvesting, it replants crops by consuming a seed from the player’s inventory. Its listing also exposes a configurable golden-crop chance. Review that setting before enabling the mod; a non-default chance can change the expected value of farming and rare crops. Make sure the player performing the harvest has the required seed available, and verify whether the listing requires the host, server, or all players to install it.

Boss Health Bar, Enemy Health Bars, and Improved Buff List for information

These mods appear in Steam Workshop’s visual and UI results. Boss Health Bar and Enemy Health Bars address combat readability by making enemy health easier to track. Improved Buff List focuses on presenting active effects more clearly.

Use these when you lose information during crowded fights or when effect icons are difficult to parse. They are generally a lower-impact starting point than balance or world-generation mods, but do not assume they are universally client-only. Read the current Workshop scope and multiplayer notes, then test the HUD at your usual resolution. If the added bars obscure the arena or create visual noise, disable the least useful display rather than stacking every information mod.

Core Keeper - Compatible for PS4 - UK PAL
  • UK PSN account may be required for any online features
  1. Version: Record the supported Core Keeper version shown on each listing. Prefer the entry that explicitly covers your current build.
  2. Scope: Determine whether the mod is client-side, server-side, or both. A server-only automation mod is not interchangeable with a client HUD change.
  3. Multiplayer requirement: Note exactly who must install it: one host, a dedicated server, every client, or a combination.
  4. Progression effect: Classify the change as presentation-only, convenience, automation, balance, or new world content.
  5. Update recency: Compare last-update dates and recent author notes. An older but compatible release may still be preferable to an unmaintained project with a larger download count.
  6. Dependencies: Install only the libraries named by the author and verify their versions. Do not assume that a dependency used by an old guide is still required.
  7. Save safety: Ask whether removing the mod can leave items, scenes, recipes, or data that the unmodded game cannot interpret. Back up before testing any mod that changes content or inventory.

Installing Core Keeper mods through Steam Workshop

The official installation guidance uses a simple subscribe-and-restart workflow:

  1. Open the Core Keeper Workshop browsing surface in Steam.
  2. Open the mod or map listing and read its version, scope, dependency, and multiplayer notes.
  3. Select Subscribe. Steam downloads the item to your Workshop content.
  4. Close and restart Core Keeper. The official guide specifically requires a restart after subscribing.
  5. Load a test world or a backup first. Confirm that the mod appears and that its described behavior is present before continuing in your primary save.
  6. For multiplayer, have the host or server administrator publish the exact mod list and required versions. Each player should follow the listing’s installation requirement rather than assuming that subscribing alone is enough.

Unsubscribe only after checking the author’s removal guidance. For a UI-only mod, removal is usually straightforward; for a world, item, or inventory mod, remove it from a copied save first.

Installing a mod.io ZIP manually

The official installation page instructs manual installers to extract downloaded mod.io ZIP files into CoreKeeper_Data\StreamingAssets\ModFolderName. The final folder name should match the mod’s instructions; do not nest the actual mod one extra level inside an archive folder unless the listing explicitly says to do so.

  1. Download the ZIP from the mod.io listing and read the author’s version and dependency notes.
  2. Close Core Keeper before changing files.
  3. Open the game’s installation directory and locate CoreKeeper_Data\StreamingAssets.
  4. Extract the ZIP into that directory, using the mod’s stated folder name.
  5. Check that the mod files are directly inside the expected mod folder rather than still compressed or buried in a second folder.
  6. Restart the game and test in a copied world.
  7. Document the folder name and version so you can remove or update the mod cleanly later.

Manual installation is useful when a listing does not provide the Workshop workflow or when a server administrator needs a controlled file set. It also creates more maintenance work: you must replace outdated files, remove old versions, and keep the server and client files aligned when the listing requires both.

Multiplayer and dedicated-server rules

Client-only visual or interface mods

A client-only HUD or interface mod may require files only on the player’s machine, allowing other players to connect without installing it. That is not a universal rule. Verify the listing’s scope before distributing a client-only assumption, especially for health bars, buff displays, and chest interfaces.

Server-side automation and gameplay changes

AutoPlant2 is explicitly listed as server-side. For this class of mod, the host or dedicated server is the authority. Make the server’s mod set explicit, install the exact supported version, and tell players whether they need a matching client component.

Shared content and world changes

Scenes+, inventory changes, balance changes, and other content mods can affect the shared save. Coordinate installation before players join, keep a backup, and avoid changing the set mid-session. If the author does not state whether an existing world is safe, test on a copy rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical dedicated-server checklist

  • List every mod name, version, scope, and dependency in the server’s documentation.
  • Prioritize entries that explicitly support server use.
  • Install server files first, then verify whether clients also need the same mod.
  • Start a test session and connect with one client before announcing the server to the whole group.
  • Back up the world before adding or removing content, inventory, balance, or scene mods.
  • When a game update arrives, recheck every listing before restarting the production server.

Maintenance, updates, and the beta status

The Core Keeping Modding Guide states that the modding tools and Steam Workshop integration are currently in beta. That status explains why installation behavior, metadata, and compatibility can change. Treat every mod as versioned software rather than a one-time download.

Thunderstore’s current notice says Core Keeper now uses mod.io for official mod support. Older guides built around BepInEx or a Thunderstore workflow should therefore be treated as legacy references until the author confirms that they still work with your current game build. Do not install an old framework merely because a search result ranks it highly.

After a Core Keeper update, perform this maintenance pass:

  1. Check the game version and each mod’s supported-version field.
  2. Read the latest author note or changelog for breaking changes.
  3. Update dependencies before launching a world that depends on them.
  4. Copy the save and test the updated mod set separately.
  5. Only then update the dedicated server or your primary multiplayer world.

Common failure symptoms and safe fixes

The mod does not appear

Confirm that a Workshop subscription finished downloading, restart the game, or verify that a manual ZIP was extracted into CoreKeeper_Data\StreamingAssets\ModFolderName rather than left compressed. Check the listing’s supported version and required dependencies before trying another installation method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players cannot join or see different behavior

Compare the host or server’s mod list with every client’s list. A scope mismatch is more likely than a simple subscription problem: a server-side mod may be missing on the host, while a client-and-server mod may be absent from one player. Use the listing’s exact requirement and test with one client after correcting it.

A save behaves differently after removal

Stop and restore the backup made before installation. Content, scene, inventory, and balance mods can write changes that a plain uninstall does not reverse. Do not continue saving over the only copy while diagnosing the problem.

A new game update breaks a previously working mod

Check the author’s supported-version field and update notes. If no compatible release exists, disable the mod on a copied save and wait for a confirmed update rather than mixing old files with a new game build.

Three sensible mod profiles

Low-impact interface profile

Start with one of the Workshop information mods—Boss Health Bar, Enemy Health Bars, or Improved Buff List—and add Expanded Chest UI only if storage navigation is your problem. This profile changes readability more than progression. Keep the number of HUD changes small so you can identify which display helps and which creates clutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convenience-focused farming profile

Choose AutoPlant2 when the server owner wants a shared automation rule, or Auto Replant when the priority is reducing the manual replanting step. Review the golden-crop setting in Auto Replant and document it for everyone. Do not add Double Chest Inventory automatically; storage capacity and farming automation solve different problems and together can remove much of the intended resource-management pressure.

New-content profile

Use Scenes+ for a fresh or backed-up world after confirming its current version and world guidance. Add MiniBalance only if you also want its weapon, gear, and food adjustments. Because both can affect progression or world data, install them before a new campaign or test them on a copy of an existing save.

What the available numbers do—and do not—tell you

The 2026 snapshots provide useful scale: mod.io showed 110 collections, Steam’s displayed browse view showed 249 Workshop collection entries, Scenes+ advertised over 100 new scenes, and the mod.io Core Keeper catalog showed 169,000 total downloads. None of these figures proves that one mod is safer, better maintained, or more suitable for your group. They are timestamps of platform activity, not independent reviews.

No authoritative survey, review panel, or named expert ranking establishes one universal best Core Keeper mod. A goal-based shortlist is therefore more honest: select the smallest change that solves your problem, verify compatibility, and expand only after the first mod works in a backup or test world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

For most players, begin with a single, reversible quality-of-life or interface mod. Choose Expanded Chest UI for storage navigation, MiniBalance for modest balance and QoL changes, Auto Replant or server-side AutoPlant2 for farming, and Scenes+ only when you specifically want a larger exploration campaign. Add combat and buff displays one at a time. Use mod.io for official Mod SDK listings, Steam Workshop for the subscribe-and-restart workflow, and always check version, scope, dependencies, update date, and multiplayer requirements before you commit a shared save.
