The best PC coolant is not necessarily the one with the lowest advertised temperature. In a custom loop, radiator size, fan speed, pump setting, block design, case airflow, and room temperature usually matter far more than small differences between reputable premixed fluids.
For that reason, this list ranks five options by documented compatibility, formulation, material restrictions, and maintenance risk—not by an unverified claim that one runs several degrees cooler than another. Corsair’s current Hydro X compatibility table lists the first two as Preferred and the remaining three as Compatible. The table was updated on February 17, 2026, so it is a useful current reference even though this guide targets 2025 buying decisions.
Best PC coolants at a glance
| Coolant | Form | Documented Hydro X status | Best suited to | Main caution |

| CORSAIR XL5 Performance Coolant | Premixed | Preferred | Corsair Hydro X loops | Do not assume universal compatibility outside Hydro X |
| CORSAIR XL8 Performance Coolant | Premixed, 1 L | Preferred | Hydro X users wanting a current Corsair option and color choices | No verified thermal advantage over XL5 |
| Koolance LIQ-702 Clear | Premixed, 700 mL | Compatible | Clear loops where the component materials are suitable | Not recommended for polycarbonate plastics |
| Aquacomputer Double Protect Ultra | Premixed | Compatible | Users selecting an Aquacomputer coolant for a compatible loop | No universal material or service-interval guarantee |

Best overall choice for a Corsair Hydro X loop. XL5 is a premixed coolant that Corsair classifies as Preferred for Hydro X components. That makes it the least complicated recommendation for a build using Corsair’s pump/reservoir, water blocks, radiators, and fittings.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from a stunning range of vibrant colors to complete your custom cooling system and enhance your build
- Long lasting pre-mixed performance coolant is ready to go right out of the bottle, with no additional additives or inhibitors required
- Protects copper, brass, and nickel with advanced corrosion
- Protects copper, brass, and nickel with advanced anti-corrosion and anti-bacterial inhibitors
There is no dilution ratio to calculate in the available documentation, and Corsair does not publish a verified thermal-conductivity figure, controlled temperature comparison, or universal replacement interval for XL5. Therefore, it should not be promoted as intrinsically cooler than the other fluids here.
XL5’s “Preferred” label is also not a universal compatibility certificate. If the loop contains a reservoir or fitting from another manufacturer, check that manufacturer’s material restrictions before filling it.
2. CORSAIR XL8 Performance Coolant
Best current Corsair alternative, particularly for users who want a colored premix. Corsair lists Hydro X Series XL8 as Preferred for Hydro X components. Corsair’s U.S. product pages identify it as a 1 L premixed coolant, with listed variants including Clear, Red, and Blue.

XL8 is convenient because it is ready to use and available in several color options. However, the available official documentation does not establish that XL8 outperforms XL5, Koolance LIQ-702, EK Cryofuel, or Mayhems X1. Avoid claims that it is simply a rebranded XL5; that has not been verified by the retrieved manufacturer material.
Use the exact product and color listed by the manufacturer. Do not infer compatibility for another Corsair fluid merely because it carries the Hydro X name.
3. Koolance LIQ-702 Clear
Best documented choice for a clear loop when polycarbonate is absent. Koolance LIQ-702 is a premixed clear coolant, and Corsair lists LIQ-702 as Compatible with Hydro X components. Koolance’s published specifications are unusually useful when planning a loop:
Rank #2
- High quality concentrated pigments for intense, vivid and saturated colors
- Thermal efficient and non-toxic formula
- Low electrical conductivity
- Compatible with Acrylic, PeTG, POM Acetal, rubber (NBR, ePDM, and Norprene) materials
- eco-friendly (90% biodegradable in 10 days)
| Specification | LIQ-702 value |
|---|---|
| Color | Clear |
| Electrical conductivity | 2,500 µS/cm |
| Freezing point | −15 °C / 5 °F |
| Specific gravity at 20 °C | 1.03 |
| Viscosity at 20 °C | Approximately 2.3 cP |
| Bottle volume | 700 mL / 23.67 U.S. fl oz |
The important limitation is easy to miss: Koolance says LIQ-702 is not recommended for polycarbonate plastics or other PC-based plastics. A coolant can therefore be compatible with Corsair Hydro X hardware while still being unsuitable for a loop containing a polycarbonate reservoir, pump top, or fitting.

Do not describe it as non-conductive or electrically safe during a leak. Turn off the system, disconnect power, dry affected components, and investigate the leak before attempting to restart the PC.
4. Aquacomputer Double Protect Ultra
A sensible documented-compatible option for an Aquacomputer-oriented build. Corsair lists Double Protect Ultra as compatible with Hydro X components. That makes it a candidate for a mixed-brand loop, provided the other manufacturers’ material guidance also permits it.
The available official compatibility material does not establish a thermal-conductivity number, temperature advantage, maintenance interval, or universal compatibility with every tubing, seal, reservoir, and block material. Its position in this list reflects documented compatibility—not a laboratory-proven temperature lead.
Before filling a mixed loop, identify every wetted component. The coolant maker’s approval of one brand’s hardware does not automatically override the restrictions printed by another manufacturer.
5. Mayhems X1
A compatible premix for builders who specifically want Mayhems X1. Corsair lists Mayhems X1 as compatible with Hydro X components. That is enough to make X1 a reasonable option when the exact product is available and the rest of the loop has been checked for material compatibility.
Rank #3
- High quality concentrated pigments for intense, vivid and saturated colors
- Thermal efficient and non-toxic formula
- Low electrical conductivity
- Compatible with Acrylic, PeTG, POM Acetal, rubber (NBR, ePDM, and Norprene) materials
- eco-friendly (90% biodegradable in 10 days)
Do not generalize this approval to all Mayhems products. Corsair’s table distinguishes between individual fluids: it lists Mayhems Pastel as compatible, while Mayhems SFX Aurora and Mayhems XTR are listed as not compatible. Brand-level assumptions are unsafe here.
The retrieved documentation does not verify a lower temperature, a universal service interval, or compatibility with every loop material. Treat X1 as a product-specific choice, not a blanket endorsement of the Mayhems range.
How to choose the right coolant
- List every component that contacts the fluid. Include the CPU and GPU blocks, radiator, pump housing, reservoir, fittings, tubing, and any quick-disconnect hardware.
- Check the exact coolant name. “Compatible with Mayhems” or “compatible with EK” is too vague. Compatibility can change between clear, pastel, opaque, particle, and effect formulations.
- Prefer a premix unless you have a specific reason to mix concentrate. Premixed coolant removes dilution errors and avoids accidentally using the wrong water quality or additive ratio.
- Choose clear fluid when reliability and inspection matter most. Clear coolant makes debris, discoloration, and clouding easier to spot. Opaque and effect fluids may have additional formulation and maintenance risks.
- Do not mix brands or formulations during a refill. Individual products being compatible does not prove that a mixture of them is compatible.
- Inspect for leaks before powering the PC. Use the motherboard’s 24-pin jumper or the pump manufacturer’s recommended external-power procedure. Keep the PSU disconnected from the motherboard and graphics card while leak-testing, and follow the component manuals.
Coolants and formulations to avoid in a Hydro X loop
Corsair’s current table marks the following products as not compatible with Hydro X:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Alphacool Eiswasser, Eiswasser Pastel, and Cape Kelvin Catcher CKC
- Aquatuning AT-Protect
- EK Cryofuel Solid and Mystic Fog
- Jingway Galaxy
- Mayhems SFX Aurora and XTR
- Phobya ZuperZero Xtreme
- Primochill Opaque, Liquid Utopia, and VUE
- Swiftech HydrX
- Thermaltake C1000 Opaque and Coolant 1000
- XSPC EC6 Opaque
- UFO Technologies Cryo-Chillz
This list illustrates why “opaque,” “pastel,” or “premium” is not enough information to judge a coolant. Formulation compatibility is product-specific. Corsair says fluids not explicitly listed on its page should be treated as incompatible with Hydro X products.
Is distilled water the best coolant for a PC?
Not as a complete long-term solution. EK’s installation documentation explicitly says: “Do not use pure distilled water as a cooling liquid!” EK recommends EK-CryoFuel coolants for its products and states that its installation and cooling-performance testing use EK-brand thermal-interface and cooling products.
Freshly distilled water may have low conductivity, but that does not make a filled PC loop electrically safe. Metals, tubing, flux, dust, additives, and other contamination can change its conductivity. Pure water also does not, by itself, provide the corrosion and biological protection expected from a purpose-made coolant.
Rank #4
- Designed as the ultimate OVERCLOCKERS fluid. With no fancy glycols or special chemical compounds, just PURE PERFORMANCE.
- Ok for all plastics, rubbers, and miscellaneous gasket materials.
- Special ingredients to prevent build up and corrosion. Clean, low viscosity.
- Affordable and efficient solution for the most extreme performance purist.
- Formulated for high flow pumps and is not prone to mechanical sheering. Specially formulated with excellent lubrication properties to increase pump life.
If a manufacturer specifically permits distilled water, follow that manufacturer’s instructions for corrosion and biological protection. Otherwise, use a compatible premixed coolant rather than treating water alone as a universal upgrade.

Changing between reputable premixed coolants is rarely the first performance upgrade to make. For lower temperatures, check the parts that dominate heat transfer:
- Increase radiator surface area before chasing coolant specifications.
- Set a sensible fan curve and verify that fans are oriented correctly.
- Check pump operation, flow restrictions, and air trapped in the radiator or pump.
- Remount the CPU or GPU block if contact pressure or thermal paste application is questionable.
- Compare coolant temperature, component temperature, ambient temperature, fan speed, pump speed, and workload—not just a single CPU temperature reading.
No retrieved official source establishes that any coolant in this list runs 3–5 °C cooler than the others under identical conditions. Such a claim requires controlled testing with the same hardware, radiator, fans, flow rate, ambient temperature, and load.
How to replace coolant safely
- Shut down the PC and disconnect AC power.
- Move the case to a position where a drain fitting or low point can be accessed without spilling onto electronics.
- Open the reservoir cap only after the pump is off and the system is cool.
- Drain the old coolant into a suitable container. Do not run the pump dry.
- If changing formulation or brand, flush according to the coolant and component manufacturers’ instructions. There is no universal flush command or one replacement interval that applies to every loop.
- Inspect tubing, blocks, the reservoir, and fittings for clouding, particles, biological growth, corrosion, or staining.
- Fill with one compatible coolant. Do not combine the remaining old fluid with the new bottle.
- Leak-test with the PC electronics powered off, then check the reservoir level again after air has left the loop.
Bottom line: which coolant should you buy?
For a Corsair Hydro X loop, start with XL5 or XL8 because Corsair marks both as Preferred. Choose XL8 if its listed color and 1 L format suit the build; choose XL5 when you want the straightforward Hydro X recommendation.
For a clear mixed-brand loop, Koolance LIQ-702 Clear is worth considering only after confirming that no wetted component is made from polycarbonate or another restricted PC-based plastic. Aquacomputer Double Protect Ultra and Mayhems X1 are also documented-compatible choices, but their compatibility should be checked at the exact product level.
None of these should be selected on the assumption that it will automatically deliver a dramatic temperature reduction. The safest choice is the compatible premix that matches every material in the loop and is easy for you to inspect and replace.

FAQ
Which PC coolant is best overall?
For a Corsair Hydro X loop, CORSAIR XL5 Performance Coolant is the simplest overall recommendation because Corsair classifies it as Preferred. XL8 is also Preferred. This is a compatibility recommendation, not proof that XL5 runs cooler than every alternative.
Can I mix XL5, XL8, EK Cryofuel, Koolance LIQ-702, and Mayhems X1?
Do not assume they can be mixed. Compatibility of each product on its own does not verify compatibility of a mixture. Drain and flush the loop according to the relevant manufacturer guidance when changing brands or formulations.
Is Koolance LIQ-702 safe for every reservoir?
No. Koolance says LIQ-702 is not recommended for polycarbonate plastics or other PC-based plastics. Check the material of the reservoir, pump top, fittings, and other wetted parts before using it.
Is PC coolant electrically non-conductive?
Do not treat coolant as electrically safe during a leak. Koolance specifies LIQ-702 at 2,500 µS/cm conductivity, and even low-conductivity water can become more conductive after contamination. Keep liquid away from powered electronics.
How often should I replace PC coolant?
There is no single manufacturer-verified interval that applies to all five products and all loops. Follow the coolant and component manufacturers’ instructions, and replace or investigate the fluid if it becomes cloudy, develops particles, changes unexpectedly, or shows signs of contamination.
Is distilled water better than premixed coolant?
Not as a universal long-term solution. EK explicitly says not to use pure distilled water as a cooling liquid and recommends EK-CryoFuel for its products. Distilled water alone does not automatically provide corrosion and biological protection.
The Bottom Line
Best practical pick: use CORSAIR XL5 or XL8 in a Hydro X loop, because both are currently marked Preferred by Corsair. Choose Koolance LIQ-702 only after checking for polycarbonate, and treat Aquacomputer Double Protect Ultra and Mayhems X1 as product-specific compatible alternatives. There is no verified evidence here that any one of the five provides a universal multi-degree temperature advantage.
