For the closest match to the original game, use Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 Controller. Its three-pronged layout and rear Z button reproduce the ergonomics Ocarina of Time was designed around. If you prefer Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, start with the mapping shown in the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics app, then move the three C-button actions to inputs your right thumb can reach without losing camera or movement control.
Open the game’s Suspend Menu with Minus, choose View/Change Controls, and use that screen to inspect or customize the game/controller combination. Save the layout, then test movement, Z targeting, shielding, item use, C-up/Navi, and every ocarina note before relying on it in a dungeon.
Which controller is best for Ocarina of Time on Switch 2?
The official Nintendo 64 Controller is the most straightforward recommendation when authenticity and muscle memory matter. Nintendo describes it as designed to look and operate like the original Nintendo 64 controller, and the original Ocarina of Time manual recommends the classic hand position, including placing the left index finger on the rear Z button. That arrangement keeps the analog stick, A, B, the three C buttons, and Z in the positions the game’s interface expects.
Modern controllers are still perfectly usable. Joy-Con 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller can run the game, and both support Nintendo’s remapping tools. Their layouts are more conventional than the N64 pad, so comfort depends on how easily your right thumb can reach three separate C-button actions while your left thumb remains on movement and your Z or shield input stays immediately available.

Quick recommendation by player type
- Want the original feel: choose the official Nintendo 64 Controller.
- Already own Joy-Con 2: keep movement on the left stick and customize the C actions in the game’s View/Change Controls screen.
- Prefer a conventional modern pad: use the Switch 2 Pro Controller, but verify every label after remapping rather than assuming a preset matches the N64 layout.
- Want an N64-style third-party option: the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is a possible alternative; verify current United States compatibility, stock, price, and retailer terms before buying. TechRadar has reported testing it wirelessly on Switch 2 with Ocarina of Time.
Why Ocarina of Time needs a deliberate control layout
Many games can tolerate a slightly awkward button arrangement because their actions are concentrated on a few face buttons. Ocarina of Time is different. The three C buttons select items, call up context-sensitive actions, and play the ocarina. They are used repeatedly in exploration, combat, menus, and puzzles. The game also expects quick access to Z targeting and shielding, while C-up can call Navi and display a first-person view.
On an N64 controller, the C buttons sit together under the right thumb. On a modern pad, those functions may be spread across right-stick directions, face buttons, or shoulder inputs. The goal is not to copy a particular unlabeled preset; it is to preserve the relationships that make the original game readable:
- Movement should remain on the left stick.
- The three C actions should be distinct, memorable, and reachable without taking your thumb far from camera control.
- C-up/Navi needs an input you can press immediately when the game expects it.
- Z targeting and shielding should stay on the labels Nintendo shows for Z and the relevant shoulder trigger in the control screen.
- Ocarina notes should be playable without changing hand position or hunting through a menu.
These are ergonomic recommendations, not a replacement for the game’s displayed assignments. Nintendo’s View/Change Controls screen is the authority for the exact mapping on your controller and software version.

Use the in-game controls screen whenever you connect a different controller or change a button arrangement. Nintendo 64 titles can show the original-controller assignments and let you customize controls for a specific game and controller combination.
- Start Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics app on Switch 2.
- Press Minus to open the Suspend Menu.
- Select View/Change Controls.
- Press Y to view how the original N64 buttons map to the controller currently connected, or choose Change Controls to edit the game/controller combination.
- Assign and save your preferred layout.
- Test the saved configuration in a safe area before entering a dungeon or beginning a difficult fight.
The labels shown here matter more than the physical shape of your controller. A button that feels like “Z” on one pad may be labeled differently on another, and a right-stick direction may be presented as a C-button action. Read the displayed name for each function before saving.

Recommended layouts for each controller
Official Nintendo 64 Controller
Use the displayed original mapping unless you have a specific accessibility reason to change it. The controller’s design already puts the three C buttons under the right thumb and the rear Z button under the left index finger, matching the hand position described in the original manual.
This is the best choice for players who remember the N64 version, want the least adaptation, or frequently play sections that require rapid item changes and ocarina notes. Its main trade-off is that it is specialized hardware rather than a general-purpose modern pad. If you are buying one specifically for Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics, confirm current United States availability and terms at the time of purchase; the supplied specifications do not establish a current price or stock level.

Joy-Con 2
Joy-Con 2 works best when you treat the right-side controls as a compact substitute for the C cluster. Keep Link’s movement on the left stick. Put the three C actions on three separate, easy-to-reach inputs—often distinct right-stick directions or face/shoulder inputs, depending on the way you hold the controller.
Make C-up/Navi the direction or button you can identify instantly. Keep Z targeting and shield functions on the labels Nintendo presents for Z and the relevant shoulder trigger. Because Joy-Con 2 can be used in different physical arrangements, check the screen while holding the controller exactly as you play; a mapping that works with the Joy-Cons separated may feel awkward when they are joined.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
The Pro Controller gives you a conventional two-stick grip, so movement and camera control are familiar. Start from Nintendo’s displayed mapping, then decide whether the C actions belong on right-stick directions, face buttons, or shoulder inputs. The best choice depends on your thumb reach and whether you prefer to keep the right stick available for camera adjustments.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

A useful starting principle is to place the three C actions on adjacent, memorable inputs while reserving one immediately reachable input for C-up/Navi. Do not sacrifice Z targeting or shielding to make the C cluster easier; those actions need to remain available during combat. After saving, verify the arrangement with the actual labels shown in View/Change Controls.

The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is an N64-style third-party possibility. TechRadar has reported testing it wirelessly on Switch 2 while playing Ocarina of Time. That report does not establish your current local price, stock, wireless performance in every setup, or retailer policy, so check those details before purchase. Once connected, use the same in-game View/Change Controls process and confirm every function rather than assuming the third-party labels match Nintendo’s controller.

A practical mapping recipe for modern controllers
If you do not know where to begin, use this sequence rather than changing several functions at once.
- Load Nintendo’s displayed mapping. In View/Change Controls, inspect the original N64 assignments for the controller you are holding.
- Lock in movement first. Leave movement on the left stick so walking, swimming, and climbing retain a consistent feel.
- Place the three C actions. Choose three separate right-side inputs that you can reach without releasing movement. Distinct right-stick directions are a natural starting point; face or shoulder inputs may be better if moving the stick interferes with camera control.
- Choose a C-up/Navi input. Use the direction or button you can press without looking down. You will use it for Navi and the game’s C-up behavior.
- Preserve Z and shield access. Keep lock-on and shielding on the Z-related and shoulder labels Nintendo shows. These functions should not require a hand reposition during combat.
- Check item use. Assignments must let you select and use items quickly, because the C buttons are not merely camera controls.
- Check ocarina notes. Play a complete short phrase using the saved arrangement. If one note requires an awkward stretch, move that C action before you continue.
- Save, then test under pressure. Try the layout in a low-risk area, including movement, camera adjustment, targeting, shielding, item selection, C-up/Navi, and ocarina input.
Testing checklist before a dungeon
A layout can feel fine in a menu and fail during combat. Run this short sequence in an area where a mistake has no serious cost:
- Walk in all directions while changing the camera.
- Activate Z targeting and release it repeatedly.
- Raise the shield while moving and while targeted.
- Use each assigned C action once, then use them while moving.
- Call Navi with C-up and confirm that you can find the input without visual attention.
- Select several items and use them without losing your position.
- Play the ocarina’s required notes in succession.
- Pause with Minus, reopen View/Change Controls, and confirm that the saved labels still match your intended functions.
If any test requires you to look at the controller, move that function to a more distinctive input. Ocarina of Time rewards consistent timing, so familiarity is more valuable than a theoretically perfect layout that you keep forgetting.

System-level button mapping on Switch 2
Nintendo’s system-level button mapping supports Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. These mappings are saved on the Switch 2 console, not on the controller itself, and can be reset from Quick Settings.
System mapping is useful when a physical button is difficult to press or when you need a broader accessibility change across games. For Ocarina of Time, however, make the game-specific arrangement in View/Change Controls first. A system-wide swap can affect other games and can make the labels in the Nintendo 64 app harder to interpret. After changing a system mapping, reopen the game’s control screen and verify the resulting assignments.

“The C buttons feel wrong on my Pro Controller.”
Reopen Suspend Menu > View/Change Controls and move the three C actions to inputs your right thumb can reach without leaving the camera or movement controls. Test one change at a time so you know which arrangement helped.
“I cannot find the original N64 layout.”
Start Ocarina of Time, press Minus, and select View/Change Controls. Press Y to display how the original N64 buttons map to the controller currently connected. This view is more reliable than guessing from the shape or printed labels on a modern pad.

“My system-wide mapping changed unexpectedly.”
Remember that console-level mappings are stored on Switch 2. Review or reset them in Quick Settings, then check the game-specific mapping again. Resetting the console mapping does not replace the need to verify Ocarina of Time’s own assignments.
“A third-party N64 pad connects, but the buttons do not match.”
Use the game’s View/Change Controls screen to identify each input and customize the game/controller combination. Third-party hardware may use different labels or button behavior, so confirm movement, Z, shield, C actions, and ocarina notes before playing a critical section.
How to choose between authenticity and flexibility
Choose the Nintendo 64 Controller when muscle memory is the priority
The official pad minimizes translation between the original manual’s instructions and your hands. The rear Z position, C-button cluster, and three-pronged grip are the reasons it remains the clearest choice for an authentic Ocarina of Time session.
Choose a modern controller when comfort or availability matters more
Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller can be better if you already use them, prefer a conventional grip, or need system-level remapping. Expect to spend a few minutes tuning C-button reach and then test the result. The game supports customization, so you are not locked to the first arrangement you see.
Choose third-party hardware only after checking current terms
An N64-style alternative can provide a familiar shape without being Nintendo’s official controller. The available reporting confirms a wireless Switch 2 test for the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller, but current United States price, stock, compatibility details, and retailer terms are not established here. Treat those as purchase checks, not assumptions.
Final setup recommendation
For most players, connect the official Nintendo 64 Controller and retain Nintendo’s original mapping. For Joy-Con 2 or the Switch 2 Pro Controller, open View/Change Controls, keep movement on the left stick, place the three C actions on distinct right-side inputs, reserve an immediately reachable input for C-up/Navi, and keep Z targeting and shielding where Nintendo identifies them. Save the layout and complete the low-risk test checklist before starting a dungeon. That process gives you the original game’s priorities—fast item selection, dependable targeting, and comfortable ocarina notes—without relying on an unlabeled preset.
