The best starting setup is a conventional Nintendo DS mapping: controller D-pad to the DS D-pad, four face buttons to A/B/X/Y, shoulder buttons to L/R, and dedicated buttons to Start and Select. Keep touchscreen input available because many DS games require stylus actions. After confirming the game works, hide the virtual controls or lower their opacity if they cover the display. There is no universal best layout: the right arrangement depends on the emulator, controller and game.

What “best controller settings” means on Android

A physical gamepad can make directional movement and repeated button presses more comfortable, but it does not reproduce every Nintendo DS input. The DS has two screens, a touch-sensitive lower screen, a microphone input and a clamshell lid state. A controller handles the D-pad and buttons well; touch-dependent actions still need Android touch input or an emulator’s virtual-cursor controls.

Use these priorities when configuring any emulator:

  • Correct input: every DS button should trigger exactly one intended emulator input.
  • Comfort: put the buttons you press most often under your natural thumb and index-finger positions.
  • Touch access: retain a practical way to tap, drag or draw on the lower screen.
  • Visibility: remove or fade virtual controls only after you know you can recover touch input when needed.
  • Repeatability: save a mapping or core configuration so the arrangement can be restored after an update.

Documentation for melonDS-Android and DraStic describes mapping features, but it does not establish one objectively superior arrangement across Android devices, controllers and games. Treat the layout below as a reliable starting point rather than a laboratory-tested universal standard.

Recommended Nintendo DS mapping

Begin with the standard targets below. The physical button names differ between controllers, so select the buttons that feel most natural rather than copying a particular controller’s lettering.

DS input Recommended physical control Why this is a useful starting point
D-pad: Up, Down, Left, Right Controller D-pad Preserves the directional shape used by most DS games.
A Primary face button Usually the easiest face button to reach with the right thumb.
B Lower or secondary face button Convenient for cancel, jump or secondary actions.
X Upper face button Keeps the two additional DS buttons distinct from A and B.
Y Left face button Provides a consistent fourth face-button position.
L Left shoulder button Matches the DS’s left shoulder position.
R Right shoulder button Matches the DS’s right shoulder position.
Start Dedicated menu or center button Prevents accidental presses during gameplay.
Select Dedicated secondary menu button Keeps system-style functions separate from face buttons.

Some games use only a subset of these controls, while others assign unusual functions to X, Y, Start or Select. Verify the result in the game itself, including its pause, inventory and map screens.

Prepare Android and the controller

Choose a connection

An Android-compatible Bluetooth or USB game controller is optional; touchscreen controls can be used instead. The melonDS information and settings material describes both USB and Bluetooth controller connections. Before buying or troubleshooting a controller, confirm that Android recognizes it and that the emulator supports the device’s input events. No particular controller model, price, latency advantage or compatibility guarantee is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm Android sees button presses

  1. Pair the controller through Android Bluetooth settings, or connect it with a compatible USB adapter or cable.
  2. Open the emulator only after Android reports the controller as connected.
  3. In the emulator’s input or controller screen, press each face, shoulder and directional control once.
  4. Note whether a button produces one event, multiple events or no event. A duplicate event usually means two bindings were assigned to the same action.

Start with one profile

Map the basic DS controls before changing screen layouts, vibration or advanced functions. Launch a game that uses ordinary movement and menus, test every mapped control, then test a touch action. This isolates a binding problem from a game-specific input requirement.

Configure melonDS-Android

The melonDS-Android project’s Input documentation describes a Key mapping function that maps controller keys to emulator inputs. Its wiki pages for Input and Settings were last edited November 14, 2021, so the wording or location can differ in a newer build.

Map the controller

  1. Open Settings > Input.
  2. Open Key mapping.
  3. Press the physical control you want to use, then assign it to the matching DS input: D-pad directions, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start or Select.
  4. Repeat until every control required by your game is assigned.
  5. Return to the game and test movement, a face-button action, both shoulders and the pause or menu command.

If a label in your build is different, look for the equivalent Input or Key mapping screen rather than assuming the documented 2021 wording is unchanged.

Select or edit the software input layout

melonDS-Android also exposes software input layouts. In Settings > Input, choose an existing layout or create and edit one. A layout determines how on-screen controls are arranged when touch input is shown; it is separate from the physical controller’s key bindings.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Reduce on-screen clutter

When the physical controller works, the documentation says Show soft input can be disabled. If you still need occasional touch access, leave soft input enabled and lower Soft input opacity instead. The same settings area documents touch vibration and its strength, allowing you to turn that feedback off or reduce it if it is distracting. Do not hide the soft input until you have confirmed that your games do not require frequent touchscreen interaction.

Configure DraStic

DraStic’s settings guide places external-controller configuration under Options > External Controller. It documents a mapping dialog for buttons and the D-pad and allows up to three saved mappings, which is useful when one controller is shared by several players or when you want separate arrangements for different games.

Create and save a mapping

  1. Open Options > External Controller.
  2. Choose a mapping slot or create a new mapping.
  3. Use the mapping dialog to assign the D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select.
  4. Save the mapping, then select it as the active external-controller profile.
  5. Test the profile in a game, including a menu screen where Start or Select has a visible function.

The three-profile limit is a documented DraStic feature; it should not be assumed to apply to other emulators.

MOGA-specific automatic assignment

DraStic’s FAQ states that MOGA controllers were automatically assigned beginning with version 2.2.0.0a and that the mapping view is available at Options > External Controller > Show MOGA Button Mapping. This is a controller-family- and version-specific note, not a rule for every Bluetooth gamepad. If automatic assignment does not match your controller, use the normal mapping dialog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer a universal Start or X behavior

The FAQ uses a Pokémon menu example in which Start has no default in-game action and X opens the menu. That describes the cited game behavior, not a universal Nintendo DS mapping convention. If a game’s own control guide assigns a different function, follow the game’s assignment.

Configure RetroArch with the melonDS DS core

RetroArch uses a different configuration model from the standalone Android applications. The melonDS DS core documentation identifies Nintendo DS – Joypad as the user device type. Configure the core through RetroArch’s controls interface, not through melonDS-Android’s Settings screen.

Assign standard DS controls

  1. Start a game with the melonDS DS core loaded.
  2. Open RetroArch’s quick menu and enter the core or controls configuration area.
  3. Keep the device type set to Nintendo DS – Joypad.
  4. Bind the D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select to the physical controls chosen in the mapping table.
  5. Save the control configuration if you want the bindings to persist.

Map DS-specific functions when needed

The core’s documented input table includes more than ordinary buttons. It exposes Microphone, Next Screen Layout, Move Virtual Cursor, Close Lid and Touch Virtual Cursor. Assign these only when a game or your screen arrangement benefits from them:

Keep touchscreen play practical

A gamepad does not inherently replace stylus input. Games may require tapping a menu item, dragging an object, drawing a shape, pressing a virtual piano key or blowing into the microphone. Keep one of these paths available:

  • Leave Android touch input visible but reduce its opacity.
  • Use the emulator’s touch overlay only when needed and hide it for button-focused play.
  • In RetroArch’s melonDS DS core, bind and use the virtual cursor and touch-virtual-cursor functions.
  • Use direct screen touch for precise actions, then return to the physical controller for movement and buttons.

Test a touch-dependent section before committing to a fully hidden overlay. A layout that looks clean on the title screen can become unusable when a game asks for a precise lower-screen gesture.

Choose a screen layout that suits the game

Two-screen presentation is as important as button mapping. A large combined view may make both screens readable, while a stacked or emphasis layout may make the active screen easier to see. The available choices depend on the emulator. RetroArch’s core specifically documents a Next Screen Layout function; melonDS-Android and DraStic expose their own software-input and display controls, so do not expect identical labels or behavior.

Use per-game choices

Keep a layout that shows both screens for games that constantly alternate between them. Prefer an arrangement that enlarges the lower screen when touch accuracy matters. In RetroArch, save a per-game core-option override when one title needs a different arrangement. This avoids changing the layout globally and then forgetting why another game looks wrong.

Check readability before hiding controls

Virtual buttons can obscure a small display, but removing them may also remove the quickest path to touch interaction. Reduce opacity first, play through a touch-heavy section, and hide them only when the remaining input method is reliable.

Compare the three Android setups

Setup Where mapping is configured Documented profile or layout features Touch or special-input path Version caveat
melonDS-Android Settings > Input > Key mapping Choose, create or edit software input layouts; Show soft input can be disabled; Soft input opacity and touch-vibration settings are available. Android touch input and software controls. Input and Settings wiki pages last edited November 14, 2021; labels may differ in current builds.
DraStic Options > External Controller Mapping dialog supports buttons and D-pad; up to three mappings can be saved. Use the emulator’s touch functions; the cited FAQ separately documents MOGA mapping. MOGA automatic assignment is stated for version 2.2.0.0a and that controller family.
RetroArch with melonDS DS core RetroArch controls and core configuration Device type is Nintendo DS – Joypad; per-game core-option overrides are recommended where appropriate. Virtual cursor, touch virtual cursor, microphone, lid and next-screen-layout functions are documented. Core/frontend menus are distinct from standalone melonDS-Android menus; documentation is living and was accessed October 13, 2026.

Use five comparison questions when deciding which arrangement fits you: Which emulator or core is actually running? Does Android recognize the controller over Bluetooth or USB? How easy is it to bind and save mappings? Can you still touch the lower screen or invoke a cursor? Can you change screen layout conveniently for the games you play?

Troubleshoot common mapping problems

A button does nothing

  • Return to the emulator’s mapping screen and confirm that Android is sending an event for that physical control.
  • Delete duplicate or stale bindings, then assign the button again.
  • Check that the game is using the intended profile or core, not a different emulator configuration.
  • Test the same button in a menu and during gameplay; a game may simply assign no action to it in a particular screen.

Two DS actions happen together

Two emulator inputs may share one physical binding. Inspect every assignment and remove duplicates. Rebuild the profile from the D-pad and face-button table if you cannot identify the conflict.

The overlay covers the game

In melonDS-Android, disable Show soft input or reduce Soft input opacity. In another emulator, look for its equivalent software-input visibility or opacity control. Keep touch available until you have tested all touch-required actions.

The controller connects but the game still expects touch

This is usually an input-coverage issue rather than a failed button map. Re-enable touch controls, use direct screen touch, or configure RetroArch’s virtual cursor and touch-virtual-cursor functions.

A menu behaves differently from the mapping guide

Do not assume Start, Select, X or another button has a universal in-game meaning. Check the title’s own controls and test the active profile. The DraStic FAQ’s Pokémon example demonstrates why a game-specific behavior should not be generalized.

A documented menu is missing

Documentation can lag app releases. The melonDS-Android wiki pages cited here were last edited in 2021; compare the installed build’s current Input or External Controller wording and update the emulator before assuming the function was removed.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Connect an Android-compatible Bluetooth or USB controller, or decide to use touchscreen input.
  2. Open the correct emulator’s controller settings.
  3. Map D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select.
  4. Save the mapping where the emulator supports saved profiles.
  5. Launch a game and test movement, every face button, both shoulders and the menu controls.
  6. Perform at least one lower-screen touch action.
  7. Choose a readable two-screen layout; in RetroArch, consider a per-game core-option override.
  8. Hide or fade virtual controls only after touch recovery is confirmed.
  9. Record which profile and layout work for each controller so a later change is easy to reverse.

Bottom line

For most Android DS sessions, map the physical D-pad and standard buttons first, keep touch input available, then reduce overlay clutter. melonDS-Android is configured from Settings > Input and offers software-input visibility and opacity controls; DraStic provides External Controller mapping with up to three saved mappings; RetroArch’s melonDS DS core adds Nintendo DS-specific cursor, microphone, lid and screen-layout functions. Because menu names and capabilities vary by build, controller and game, the best setting is the one that you verify in the exact title you intend to play.
