There is no universal numeric controller preset that makes melee combat more precise in every game. Start with the game’s defaults, then change look sensitivity, stick response, deadzone and button placement one variable at a time. Keep each adjustment only if it solves a specific problem—such as overshooting a close target, turning too slowly, stick drift or an awkward melee input.

The right setting depends on the game’s control system, your controller, the condition of its sticks and the way you fight. The process below gives you a repeatable method instead of a copied number that may feel wrong in another title.

What actually affects melee precision

Melee encounters demand two kinds of control at once: you must keep your view or character pointed at a nearby opponent, and you must activate the attack without losing movement control. Four controller settings have the greatest effect on that balance.

Look sensitivity

Sensitivity determines how much the game turns your view or character for a given amount of right-stick movement. Lower sensitivity gives your thumb more travel for a small correction. That can make it easier to stop on a target rather than pass it. Higher sensitivity reaches a target faster and can help when an opponent moves across your screen, but a small thumb movement also produces a larger turn.

The official Modern Warfare III controller guide notes that players prefer different sensitivities: some favor lower values for fine control, while others choose higher values for reaction speed. Treat that as a choice between correction accuracy and turn speed, not as a ranking of one value over another.

Response curve

A response curve changes how physical stick tilt is translated into the game’s input. Two sticks moved the same distance can produce different in-game speeds under different curves. A curve that keeps the first part of travel gentle gives you more control for tiny corrections; a curve that reaches high output quickly makes rapid turns easier.

PlayStation’s DualSense Edge documentation describes six available curves. It identifies Precise as a curve that registers minimum input when the stick is first tilted, while Digital registers nearly maximum input from a slight tilt. Those descriptions are useful for understanding the extremes, but they do not establish that either curve improves melee performance in every game. See the DualSense Edge profile documentation for the current curve controls on PC.

Deadzone

Deadzone is the amount of stick movement the game ignores before it registers input. PlayStation defines it as “the range that you can tilt the stick before it’s recognized as an input” in its DualSense Edge support guide. A smaller deadzone lets movement begin sooner, which can make a stable stick feel more immediate. If the stick does not return perfectly to center, however, a very small deadzone can expose drift as unwanted camera or character movement.

Button layout and assignments

A melee button is precise only if you can press it without an unintended thumb movement or without releasing the stick that controls your view. Games may offer named presets, while some controllers also allow custom assignments. The Modern Warfare III guide documents multiple presets and remapping, and DualSense Edge profiles support custom button assignments. A layout that works in one game may conflict with an in-game remap or use a different action on another platform.

Start from a known baseline

Before changing anything, create a baseline that you can restore. This prevents a series of small experiments from turning into an unknown combination that is difficult to diagnose.

  1. Open the game’s controller settings and select its default layout and default look sensitivity.
  2. Record the settings in a note or take screenshots. Include separate horizontal and vertical sensitivity values if the game exposes them, plus any response-curve and deadzone controls.
  3. Enter the game’s practice range, training area or a repeatable combat encounter. Use the same field of view, camera perspective and controller each time you test.
  4. Perform the same short drill: face a nearby target, make a small left or right correction, turn to a second target, move while turning, and activate melee.
  5. Write down the symptom you want to fix. “I overshoot at arm’s length” is actionable; “it feels bad” is not.

Keeping the baseline matters because the cited guidance recommends starting from defaults and making small, targeted changes. PlayStation Blog’s article on Marathon quotes the Bungie development team: “There is no single perfect sensitivity setting for everyone.” Its Marathon controller recommendations are an example of that approach, not a universal preset.

Tune look sensitivity for close corrections

Change sensitivity before changing several other controls at once. Make a small adjustment, repeat the same drill and decide whether the original symptom improved. If it did not, restore the previous value before testing another direction.

When you repeatedly overshoot

If your view passes a nearby opponent whenever you make a short correction, lower look sensitivity slightly. Keep the current response curve while testing so you know the result came from sensitivity. Stop lowering it when you can track the target but still turn quickly enough to face a threat entering from the side.

When turning feels too slow

If you can place the crosshair accurately but cannot rotate to a nearby target in time, raise sensitivity in small increments. Test both a stationary correction and a quick turn; a setting that improves one but makes the other uncontrollable is not a complete fix. If the game separates horizontal and vertical sensitivity, adjust only the axis that causes the problem rather than changing both automatically.

When the problem changes with distance

Close targets expose overshoot, while a target crossing the edge of the screen exposes a lack of turn speed. Test both situations. Do not copy a sensitivity number from another game: each title can use a different scale, field of view, acceleration model and melee animation behavior.

Choose a response curve by the movement you need

Response curves are best compared by how they behave at the beginning and end of stick travel. The table describes the documented examples and the practical decision they represent; it is not a performance ranking.

Curve example Documented behavior Useful question for melee tuning
Precise Registers minimum input when the stick is tilted, according to DualSense Edge documentation. Do tiny corrections become easier to stop on the target without making a full turn unreasonably slow?
Digital Registers nearly maximum input from a slight tilt, according to DualSense Edge documentation. Does immediate high output help you turn quickly, or does it make close-range corrections jump past the target?

The DualSense Edge documentation lists six curves, but the two descriptions above are the relevant documented extremes for this comparison. Other curve names and behavior can vary by game or firmware. If your game has its own curve selector, read its current descriptions and test them in the same drill rather than assuming identical behavior.

Right stick and left stick do different jobs

The right stick normally controls view direction, so its curve determines how precisely you can line up an attack. The left stick controls movement, where a fast response can help you strafe or reverse during a close fight. A curve that feels good for movement can be too abrupt for view control. Evaluate each stick independently when the game or controller allows it.

A documented game-specific example

The Marathon article presents one DualSense Edge configuration from the Bungie development team: Precise on the right stick and Quick on the left. That recommendation belongs to Marathon’s own aim curves and sensitivity system. It demonstrates the logic of pairing a controlled view curve with a faster movement curve; it is not evidence that the same pair is best for another game or for melee combat generally.

Set the deadzone only as high as necessary

Deadzone tuning is a trade-off between early response and unwanted movement. Lowering it can make a healthy stick respond sooner. Lowering it past the point your hardware can hold at rest produces drift, which is especially distracting when you are trying to keep a melee target centered.

  1. With the controller untouched on a flat surface, watch the camera or character for movement.
  2. Lower the look-stick deadzone by one available step.
  3. Leave the stick untouched again, then repeat short corrections and a full turn.
  4. If the view moves by itself, the character walks without input or a menu selection moves, raise the deadzone to the last stable setting.
  5. Recheck after the controller has been used for a while. A value that is stable briefly may reveal drift during a longer session.

Bungie’s guidance, relayed in the Marathon article, recommends lowering deadzones carefully when the controller is stable. It does not provide a universal minimum. The correct value is therefore the lowest setting that remains still at rest on your controller, not the smallest number shown by the game.

Separate look and movement deadzones when possible

A drifting right stick moves the camera; a drifting left stick moves your character. If separate controls exist, diagnose each stick independently. Do not raise both deadzones because only one stick is unstable, since that sacrifices responsiveness on the healthy stick.

Do not use deadzone to hide a failing stick

A large deadzone can mask mild drift, but it also delays intentional movement and can make a close correction feel disconnected. If drift continues even at a setting that makes aiming noticeably sluggish, clean or service the controller according to its manufacturer’s instructions instead of treating deadzone as a permanent repair.

Map melee so the action does not break your aim

Button mapping should solve a reachability or movement problem, not serve as a substitute for sensitivity tuning. First identify what happens during the missed input:

  • If your thumb leaves the right stick to press melee, choose a layout that places the action where you can reach it while maintaining view control.
  • If pressing melee also makes you crouch, jump or perform another action, select a preset with a clearer separation or assign a different button.
  • If the action is reliable but your movement stops, look for a layout that keeps your left thumb on the movement stick.
  • If you use a controller-level assignment, verify that the game’s own remapping does not create a duplicate or conflicting command.

Use an in-game preset first when one exists, because the game knows which actions are available and displays its own labels. Controller-level profiles are useful when you want a reusable assignment across games, but they add another layer to troubleshoot. Keep a written record of the original mapping so you can restore it after switching titles.

Use game and controller profiles correctly

Some settings live inside the game; others live in the controller. A game can override or ignore a controller feature, and a controller profile can remain active when you launch a different title.

In-game settings

Open the game’s controller or input menu and change sensitivity, response curve, deadzone and layout there when those controls are available. Save the profile if the game offers a per-character or per-game option. Confirm the change in the same practice area where you recorded your baseline.

DualSense Edge profiles

Official PlayStation documentation shows that DualSense Edge profiles can adjust stick curves, deadzones and button assignments on PS5, with corresponding profile and setting controls on PC. Use the current instructions for your platform at PlayStation’s PS5 support page or its PC support page. The controller is optional: standard controllers can use the game’s own sensitivity, curve and deadzone controls when the title provides them, and the hardware does not guarantee greater precision.

A repeatable practice drill

Use a short, repeatable test rather than relying on a single exciting match. The objective is to isolate the control you changed.

  1. Centering: Start facing a stationary target. Make three small corrections from slightly left, right and below the target. Count an overshoot only when the correction carries past the target and requires a second correction.
  2. Tracking: Follow a moving target or a predictable path while walking. Note whether your view lags behind, jitters around the target or repeatedly crosses it.
  3. Turning: Begin facing away from a nearby target, rotate to it and stop. This reveals whether higher sensitivity or a faster curve helps you turn without sacrificing the final correction.
  4. Movement retention: Strafe while keeping the target centered, then press melee. Check whether the layout lets you keep movement and view control through the input.
  5. Rest test: Release both sticks for several seconds. Any camera or character motion is evidence to consider before lowering a deadzone further.

Change one variable between runs. If you lower sensitivity and change the curve at the same time, you cannot tell which change helped. Keep the setting only when it improves the named symptom without creating a new one in another part of the drill.

Diagnose common symptoms

Symptom First adjustment What to watch for
Small corrections pass the target Lower look sensitivity slightly or test a gentler response curve. Do not reduce turn speed so far that a side attack becomes difficult to face.
Turning to a nearby target is too slow Raise sensitivity in small increments or test a faster curve. Recheck stopping accuracy after every increase.
Camera moves while the stick is released Raise the look-stick deadzone to the lowest stable value. If drift persists at a sluggish setting, inspect the controller rather than continuing to raise the deadzone.
Melee press causes loss of movement or view control Try an in-game layout preset or remap the action. Confirm the new assignment does not conflict with a controller-level profile.
Settings feel different after changing games Restore that game’s baseline and tune it separately. Numeric scales and curves are not portable guarantees between titles.
A new curve feels faster but less controllable Return to the previous curve and compare sensitivity independently. Judge the first part of stick travel and your ability to stop on a target.

What the official examples do—and do not—prove

The available official material describes controls and gives examples; it does not report a controlled test showing that a particular setting improves melee accuracy, win rate or reaction time. The Modern Warfare III guide says, “Every player likes their controller a little different,” while the Marathon article attributes its recommendations to the Bungie development team and says there is no single perfect sensitivity. Those statements support an individualized tuning process, not a claim that one preset is objectively superior.

Neither source establishes how aim assist interacts with melee in unspecified games. Aim-assist strength, activation range, target selection and whether it affects a melee action are game-specific. Check the current settings screen or official guide for the exact title before assuming that changing aim assist will improve close-range attacks.

Accessibility and comfort considerations

Precision is not only a numerical problem. A layout that requires a painful reach or sustained thumb pressure will become less reliable over a long session. If a game offers alternate presets, choose the one that lets you keep your primary movement and view sticks engaged while reaching melee. If you use a controller profile with custom assignments, keep the same physical action in a consistent position across games where possible.

Make changes that reduce repeated strain rather than chasing the fastest possible turn. A slightly slower setting that you can control comfortably for an entire session is more useful than an aggressive setting that causes fatigue and inconsistent corrections. These are practical ergonomics considerations; the cited game guides do not assign a universal accessibility layout.

A decision framework for your final setup

  1. Identify the failure: overshoot, slow turn, drift, accidental melee or loss of movement.
  2. Change the matching control: sensitivity for speed, curve for how speed builds, deadzone for unintended input, mapping for reachability.
  3. Keep the change small: preserve the baseline and alter one variable.
  4. Repeat the same drill: test correction, tracking, turning, movement and rest.
  5. Check the trade-off: an improvement is valid only if it does not create a larger problem in another test.
  6. Save and document: record the final values and the game or controller profile they belong to.

For a game with no advanced controls, the practical solution may be limited to default layout, modest sensitivity changes and the lowest drift-free deadzone. For a game with curves and profiles, use those options to separate precise view control from fast movement, then verify the result in that game’s own combat environment.
