Start with an Xbox-compatible XInput controller. For fixed-camera games, choose Original or tank controls when you want the classic feel; choose Alternate or Analog movement when camera-relative directions are causing mistakes. Keyboard and mouse are perfectly workable when the PC version provides complete remapping. Because older ports use different defaults and support different devices, verify the individual game’s manual before settling on a layout.
The short answer: use XInput first, then choose the movement style
Classic survival-horror controls are not one problem. There are two separate decisions: which input device the game will recognize reliably, and how movement should behave when the camera changes. An Xbox-compatible XInput gamepad is the safest starting point for the documented Windows Steam examples. Capcom’s Resident Evil HD Remaster FAQ explicitly supports XInput devices such as Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads, and the game’s Steam listing recommends a genuine Xbox 360-compatible controller or a comparable XInput pad.
After the controller is detected, select the scheme that matches the camera design. Original controls preserve traditional tank behavior: pressing forward moves the character forward relative to the character, while left and right turn the character. Alternate controls allow fluid movement in any direction. If a title offers a separate Analog option, it normally makes the stick’s direction control movement directly rather than asking you to think in turn-and-forward commands. Neither style is universally better. Tank controls are intentional in fixed-camera horror; alternate or analog movement is usually easier when a camera cut makes directions confusing.

Keyboard play remains a sound choice if every important action can be rebound. There is no universal classic-horror keyboard layout: the correct arrangement is the one that keeps movement, confirm, cancel, attack, aim, interact and inventory within comfortable reach for that particular port.

Controller or keyboard: which is better for your game?
| Situation | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed cameras and deliberate exploration | XInput controller with Original/tank controls | The left stick or D-pad makes small turns and controlled forward movement easier to repeat. |
| Camera cuts make directions confusing | Controller with Alternate or Analog movement | Movement follows the direction you press instead of requiring you to reinterpret the character’s facing. |
| Precise menu navigation or no gamepad detection | Keyboard and mouse | A complete remapping menu can make keyboard play reliable even when controller support is inconsistent. |
| Aiming feels slow in a game with sensitivity controls | Either device; adjust the game’s own sliders gradually | Dead Space, for example, exposes separate stick and trigger sensitivity controls. |
| Using a non-XInput pad | Try the game’s supported configuration or Steam Controller Configurator | Support differs by port; Resident Evil 2 documentation notes that DualShock 4 use may require Steam Controller Configurator support. |
Controller choice also affects feedback. A pad gives you analog travel for movement and a familiar button layout, but it cannot compensate for an awkward control scheme. A keyboard gives every key a binary, repeatable press and can be excellent for tank controls, provided the game lets you move the essential actions to nearby keys. The most important test is not whether the device is fashionable; it is whether you can perform a full loop of movement, turning, combat, interaction and menu navigation without reaching across the keyboard or fighting the camera.
What tank, Original, Alternate and Analog actually change
Original or tank controls
Tank controls bind movement to the character’s orientation. Forward advances, back retreats, and the horizontal directions rotate the character. A camera change does not change what “forward” means to the character. That consistency is why the style works so well with fixed cameras: once you learn the character’s facing, you can keep moving even when the game cuts to another angle.
The cost is that a press that looks like “left on the screen” may turn the character rather than make the character strafe left. In a narrow corridor, that is usually predictable. In a room where the camera changes behind you, it can feel slow until the controls become familiar. Use short, deliberate taps rather than holding a direction through a camera transition.
Alternate controls
Resident Evil HD Remaster describes Alternate as allowing fluid movement in any direction. This reduces the need to separate “turn” from “walk forward,” especially when an enemy approaches from the side or the camera changes. It also changes the intended feel: movement becomes easier to understand immediately, but some of the deliberate tension of the original scheme is reduced.
Analog movement
The Silent Hill 2 PC manual recommends changing Walk/Run Control to Analog when an analog stick is available. Analog movement is useful when you want the distance you push the stick to influence how gently or quickly the character moves. The exact behavior and label vary by port, so treat the manual’s wording as the authority for that title rather than assuming every game uses the same option.

Why there is no universal winner
These schemes solve different problems. Original/tank controls preserve the relationship between the character and the fixed camera. Alternate or analog controls prioritize immediate directional understanding. If your goal is historical authenticity, begin with Original. If your goal is fewer accidental turns, begin with Alternate or Analog. You can switch after a short test area; the best setting is the one that lets you concentrate on exploration rather than translating inputs.
How to set up an XInput controller on Steam
- Connect the pad before launching the game. Use a wired connection for the first test if possible. A wired connection removes wireless pairing and battery variables while you establish the layout.
- Confirm that Windows and Steam see the device. If the game has a controller option, open it before loading a save and look for a gamepad prompt or button display. Do not assume that a light on the controller means the game has accepted it.
- Start with the game’s own preset. Choose Original, Alternate, Default or another named preset before making individual changes. A known preset gives you a baseline to restore later.
- Test every essential action in a safe area. Check walking, running, turning, attack, aim, interact, inventory, pause, confirm and cancel. A controller can appear to work while one trigger or menu action is unassigned.
- Choose the movement scheme. Use Original/tank for the classic fixed-camera relationship. Change to Alternate or Analog if you repeatedly press the wrong direction after a camera cut.
- Change one setting at a time. Write down the original value or use the game’s reset command before experimenting. This prevents a new sensitivity value from being confused with a remapped action.
- Save and retest after loading a game. Some older ports apply changes only after returning to gameplay or restarting. Verify the result in both exploration and combat.
The safest controller standard in the documented examples is XInput. Capcom’s Resident Evil HD Remaster FAQ names Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads as examples of supported XInput devices, while the Steam listing recommends a comparable XInput-based pad. That does not mean every modern controller will behave identically; it means XInput is the least ambiguous starting point for these Windows ports.
How to build a keyboard layout that works
Keyboard controls are viable when the port exposes full remapping. Capcom states that Resident Evil HD Remaster supports full mouse and keyboard control, not merely a few fixed keyboard shortcuts. Use that capability to create a layout around the game’s action categories rather than copying a modern first-person-shooter scheme.
- Open the game’s control options before loading a difficult section. Look for Controls, Keyboard, Key Config or Custom. Older manuals may call the screen Key Configuration rather than Settings.
- Map movement first. Keep forward, back, turn-left and turn-right distinct for tank controls. If the game supports alternate movement, test whether the same keys produce screen-relative movement or character-relative movement.
- Place the action keys beside movement. Put interact, confirm and the primary attack within easy reach of the movement cluster. Place cancel, reload or secondary action where you can reach them without releasing movement.
- Separate combat from inventory functions. Aim, fire, examine, map and inventory should not share a key unless the game requires context-sensitive behavior. Clear conflicts as soon as the menu reports them.
- Test camera transitions. Walk through a doorway or trigger a camera change, then verify what each direction does. This is where a theoretically comfortable layout can become confusing.
- Use RESET or the default preset if the result is worse. The Silent Hill 2 PC manual includes a RESET option for returning to defaults. Restore the baseline and alter one binding at a time.
Mouse support is not automatically the same as modern free-look. A port can support a mouse for menus or aiming while retaining fixed camera behavior. Treat the options the game actually exposes as the limit of what the mouse can do.
Game-specific guidance from the documented PC versions
Resident Evil HD Remaster
Resident Evil HD Remaster is the clearest example of why the controller-versus-keyboard question has two answers. Capcom’s FAQ says the game supports full mouse/keyboard control and XInput devices, including Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads. Its two documented movement schemes are Original, which works like traditional tank controls, and Alternate, which permits fluid movement in any direction.

Choose Original when you want the fixed-camera timing and deliberate turns associated with classic Resident Evil. Choose Alternate when the camera is making you press a direction that feels opposite to the screen. Test both in a low-risk room rather than changing during a combat encounter. If you play on keyboard, remap every action the game exposes instead of assuming the default arrangement is optimal.
Silent Hill 2 on PC
The Silent Hill 2 PC manual lists both keyboard and gamepad bindings and provides a RESET option for defaults. It specifically recommends changing Walk/Run Control to Analog when an analog stick is available. That recommendation makes an XInput pad a sensible first test, but the manual remains the authority for the exact labels and bindings in your edition.
If you prefer keyboard, use the manual’s binding list as a checklist. Confirm that walk, run, action, attack, aim, inventory and menu commands all have reachable keys. After remapping, test the walk/run behavior separately: a layout can register every key while still making the character move in an unintuitive mode.
Dead Space on PC
EA’s PC controls page documents Default, DS1, DS2 and Custom presets. It also provides separate stick and trigger sensitivity sliders with a 0–100 range; the documented default sensitivity is 0. This is a useful example of why sensitivity should be tuned per game rather than copied from another title.
Begin at the game’s default, then raise only the slider associated with the problem. If turning is sluggish but firing feels normal, adjust stick sensitivity rather than trigger sensitivity. Increase in small steps, test a full turn and a controlled aim movement, and stop as soon as the input is responsive without overshooting. The 0–100 range is a control scale, not a promise that 50 is a universal midpoint or that a higher value is always better.

Resident Evil 2 and non-XInput pads
Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 FAQ documents keyboard/mouse and XInput support. It also notes that DualShock 4 use may require Steam Controller Configurator support. If the game does not react to a non-XInput pad, do not immediately rebuild every in-game binding. First determine whether Steam is translating the controller into an input format the game understands; only then change the game’s own controls.
Recommended settings matrix
| Player need | Controller setting | Keyboard setting | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preserve the original fixed-camera feel | Original/tank; use the left stick or D-pad deliberately | Keep forward, back and turn keys distinct and close to the action key | A camera cut should not make you lose track of the character’s facing. |
| Reduce directional confusion | Alternate or Analog, if offered | Remap movement and action to comfortable adjacent keys | Press each direction after a camera change and confirm the result is predictable. |
| Aim or turn feels sluggish | Raise stick sensitivity in small steps; Dead Space exposes separate stick and trigger sliders | Adjust only the game’s available look or aim bindings | Test a controlled turn and a precise aim movement after each change. |
| Controller is not detected | Prefer XInput; use Steam Controller Configurator only when the game or pad needs it | Confirm keyboard focus and rebind from the game’s options | Check whether prompts change to gamepad inputs and whether every button responds. |
| Need to restore a known baseline | Use the game’s default preset | Use RESET or defaults, then change one binding at a time | Retest in gameplay, menus and after restarting if the port requires it. |
A disciplined way to tune sensitivity
Sensitivity is a per-game comfort setting, not a hardware specification. Start with the documented default. In Dead Space, the EA controls page identifies 0 as the default and provides a 0–100 range for stick and trigger sensitivity. Move one slider by a small amount, perform the same turn or aim action, and compare it with the previous value.
- Too slow: You reach the end of the stick travel before the character or camera turns far enough. Raise the relevant stick or look setting slightly.
- Too fast: Small movements jump past the target or make narrow corridors difficult. Lower the relevant setting rather than changing unrelated bindings.
- Only firing feels wrong: Adjust trigger sensitivity if the game separates it from stick sensitivity.
- Movement is wrong but aiming is fine: Check the movement scheme first. Switching from Original to Alternate or Analog can solve a directional problem that sensitivity cannot.
Do not use a sensitivity change to compensate for a misunderstood tank-control rule. In Original mode, pressing left may rotate the character by design; increasing sensitivity will not turn that input into screen-relative strafing.
Troubleshooting branches
The game shows keyboard prompts even though the controller is connected
- Close the game and reconnect the controller before launching it again.
- Confirm that the pad is an XInput device or can present itself as XInput.
- Open the game’s control menu and select its gamepad or controller preset if one is available.
- If you are using a non-XInput controller, check whether Steam Controller Configurator support is required, as noted in Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 guidance.
- Return to gameplay and test several buttons, not just the menu confirm button.
The character moves in the opposite direction after every camera cut
This is usually a control-scheme mismatch, not a broken controller. Test Alternate or Analog movement if the game offers it. If you want to retain Original/tank controls, stop briefly after each camera transition and re-establish the character’s facing before moving. On keyboard, keep turn-left and turn-right separate from forward and back so you can correct orientation deliberately.

Use the game’s RESET or default preset, then change one action at a time. The Silent Hill 2 PC manual documents RESET; other ports may call the same function Default or Restore Defaults. After each change, test gameplay and menus. Do not rely only on the configuration screen’s conflict warning, because a command can remain technically assigned while becoming difficult to reach during combat.

The controller works in menus but not in gameplay
Check whether the game uses different bindings for exploration, combat and menus. Test movement, attack, aim and interact separately. If one category is missing, reload the game’s default preset before attempting a custom layout. A controller that works only for menu navigation is not fully configured.
Accessibility and comfort decisions
Classic games often demand repeated turning, stopping and re-centering after camera changes. Choose the least tiring scheme that still gives you the desired feel. Analog movement can reduce repeated binary taps when the manual recommends it; Original/tank controls can reduce accidental diagonal movement when you want exact orientation. Keyboard players should keep high-frequency actions close to movement and avoid layouts that require simultaneous presses your hands cannot sustain comfortably.
Make changes in a safe save or test room, not immediately before a boss or a scarce-resource encounter. Keep a written note or screenshot of a working layout. If an update or controller profile changes the prompts, you can restore the known arrangement without guessing.

- Is the controller recognized as XInput? If not, confirm whether Steam translation is needed.
- Does the game offer Original, Alternate or Analog movement?
- Are you trying to preserve the fixed-camera challenge or remove directional confusion?
- Can the keyboard version remap every action you need?
- Does the game provide separate sensitivity controls, and what are its documented defaults?
- Have you tested movement after a camera cut, combat input, interaction and menu navigation?
- Can you restore the default or RESET configuration if an experiment fails?
- Have you checked the title’s own manual rather than assuming another port uses the same labels?
The most reliable workflow is therefore simple: establish XInput or a fully remappable keyboard, choose Original for authenticity or Alternate/Analog for easier directional reading, then tune only the setting that is actually causing trouble. Classic survival-horror controls become much less mysterious once device compatibility and movement style are treated as separate decisions.
