The best split-screen setup starts with one compatible controller per player, a display calibrated for the console’s actual HDR or SDR output, and a graphics mode chosen for the kind of race you want. In Gran Turismo 7 (GT7), use Prioritize Frame Rate on PS5 when smooth motion and responsive steering matter most; use Prioritize Ray Tracing/Resolution when visual effects and image detail matter more. Let each driver choose a familiar steering and pedal layout rather than forcing one supposedly universal scheme.

GT7 is the clearest officially documented example, not proof that every split-screen racer exposes the same options. The exact menu names, player limits and graphics controls vary by game and console.

Quick answer: the settings that matter most

  • Match the game and platform first. GT7 supports up to four local players on PS5 and up to two on PS4. Every player needs a separate controller.
  • Calibrate the actual display. Sit facing the center of the screen and complete GT7’s Display Settings Assistant. Select HDR or SDR to match the console and television or monitor, then follow the exposure and saturation prompts.
  • Choose the PS5 graphics priority deliberately. Frame-rate priority favors the highest possible frame rate and may simplify or disable some effects. Ray-tracing/resolution priority favors image detail. Enabling 120 Hz output while using frame-rate priority lowers resolution.
  • Start with familiar controls. Left-stick steering with separate accelerate and brake triggers is a practical starting point, but GT7 also supports directional buttons and motion steering, plus three pedal-input arrangements.
  • Test every driver before the race. Player 1 selects the race settings, eligible rental or favorited cars, course and layout, then starts the event. Each player should still adjust their own controls in Options > Controllers.

These recommendations come from Polyphony Digital’s official GT7 documentation and are best treated as a model for setting up other games, not as universal rules.

Check player count, console limits and controllers

Split-screen settings cannot compensate for a missing input device or a platform limit. Confirm those constraints before changing graphics or controls.

GT7 platform Maximum local split-screen players Controller requirement
PS5 Up to four One compatible controller for each player
PS4 Up to two One compatible controller for each player

The GT7 Online Manual states, “Each player must have their own controller to enjoy this feature.” The game’s product information advertises local four-player split-screen, while the manual provides the more precise console breakdown above. If an additional driver has no pad, the relevant purchase category is an extra controller compatible with that console; the documentation does not identify a required model, brand, price or retailer.

Before you launch the race

  1. Identify the game, console and number of local drivers.
  2. Pair and test one compatible controller for every participant. Check that each pad can navigate menus and register steering, throttle and brake input.
  3. Decide who will be Player 1. In GT7, Player 1 applies the race settings, chooses from eligible rental or favorited garage cars, selects the course and layout, and starts the race.
  4. Keep the display’s remote or buttons available. HDR/SDR selection and image calibration depend on the connected screen and console output.
  5. If you need another pad, buy only a controller confirmed as compatible with the console generation you are using. A controller purchase solves the missing-input problem, but it cannot increase GT7’s local-player cap.

Calibrate the display instead of copying someone else’s values

Brightness numbers from another room, television or video are unreliable because HDR capability, console output and panel behavior differ. GT7 provides a Display Settings Assistant so the image can be adjusted for the screen being used.

GT7 Display Settings Assistant procedure

  1. Place the player who is calibrating directly in front of the center of the display. This is the viewing position the assistant expects.
  2. Set the console’s HDR or SDR output to match the connected television or monitor. Do not select HDR merely because the game offers it if the display path is SDR.
  3. Run the assistant and follow its exposure and saturation prompts. Adjust until the on-screen reference areas are visible as instructed.
  4. If you are using SDR, complete the assistant’s bright-section and dark-section corrections as well. Those extra checks are part of the SDR setup flow.
  5. Have the other drivers sit in their normal split-screen positions and confirm that text, track edges and car outlines remain easy to see. If the screen is shared vertically or horizontally, make sure no player is judging the image from an unusually close angle.
  6. Repeat the process after moving the console to a substantially different display or changing the console’s HDR output. Treat calibration as a property of the current console-and-screen combination, not a permanent value that transfers between rooms.

The assistant should be repeated when you move the console to a materially different display or change the console’s HDR output. It is more reliable than copying a friend’s brightness or contrast settings, because it uses the current console-and-display combination.

HDR versus SDR: what the choice means

HDR and SDR are output paths, not racing assists. GT7 follows the console setting and the display’s capability, then presents calibration prompts for that path. Choose the mode your equipment actually supports and calibrate it in place. The available documentation does not establish a universal preferred display size, viewing distance or brightness value, so avoid treating any fixed number as a best practice.

A common mistake is to troubleshoot a washed-out picture by changing game controls or graphics priority. First verify the console output and display capability, then rerun the assistant. Conversely, a dark image is not evidence that frame-rate mode is faulty; it is more likely a mismatch in output selection or incomplete calibration.

Choose the PS5 graphics priority for the race you are running

On PS5, GT7 offers a choice between a frame-rate focus and a ray-tracing/resolution focus. The right choice depends on whether your group values immediate steering response and smooth motion or richer visual effects and image detail.

PS5 option What it emphasizes Trade-off documented by the manual Use it when
Prioritize Frame Rate The highest possible frame rate and smoother motion Some effects can be disabled or simplified; with 120 Hz output enabled, resolution is lower Drivers care most about responsive steering, fluid motion and judging fast corners
Prioritize Ray Tracing/Resolution Visual detail and ray-tracing effects Response-sensitive race sections disable ray tracing as described in the manual, so the visual mode does not mean ray tracing is active in every moment Your group prefers image detail and effects over the smoothest possible presentation

How to make the choice in a group

  1. Start with Prioritize Frame Rate for a competitive or technically demanding race. Smooth motion can make steering corrections easier to read.
  2. Run a short practice lap. If the group would rather see richer reflections and higher image detail, switch to Prioritize Ray Tracing/Resolution and compare the same section of track.
  3. If the display and console are configured for 120 Hz, tell players that frame-rate priority lowers resolution. You cannot promise maximum resolution and the highest frame rate simultaneously under this documented trade-off.
  4. Keep the mode that suits the players, not the mode that sounds most advanced. Preferences can legitimately differ between a casual cruise and a close race.

GT7’s manual also notes that ray tracing is disabled in response-sensitive race sections. That behavior is why “ray tracing priority” should be read as a visual preference, not a guarantee that every racing moment uses ray-traced effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not present the two choices as a universal quality ranking. Frame-rate priority is not automatically better for every television, and resolution priority is not automatically better for every player. The meaningful comparison is how the group perceives steering response, motion clarity and image detail during the actual split-screen race.

Set steering and pedals for each player

GT7 does not prescribe one best controller layout. It gives drivers several input methods, so comfort and familiarity are sensible comparison criteria.

Control Available GT7 schemes Practical starting point
Steering Left stick; directional buttons; motion sensor Left stick for gradual analog steering; choose buttons or motion only when the driver already prefers them
Accelerator and brake R2/L2; ×/□ buttons; right stick R2/L2 for separate trigger control and a familiar analog-feeling layout

Why analog controls are a useful default

Left-stick steering and separate R2/L2 pedals give a new player a straightforward way to make small steering and throttle changes. This is editorial guidance, not a setting identified by Polyphony Digital as universally superior. A driver who is faster or more comfortable with directional buttons, motion steering, face buttons or the right stick should use that method instead.

Directional buttons can be a sensible choice for someone accustomed to digital steering, while motion steering may suit a driver who naturally wants to turn the controller. The important comparison is predictable input, not the prestige of a particular scheme. Have each participant try a few corners and a braking zone rather than deciding from the menu label alone.

Change controls in the correct menu

  1. Open GT7’s Options menu.
  2. Choose Controllers.
  3. Select the steering method: left stick, directional buttons or motion sensor.
  4. Select the pedal arrangement: R2/L2, ×/□ or right stick.
  5. Have the driver test steering, acceleration and braking before entering the split-screen event. Repeat the process for each controller rather than assuming all players want identical mappings.

Do not confuse a player’s preferred mapping with a game-wide “best” setting. The official manual lists the available schemes but does not name a single winner.

A complete GT7 split-screen setup sequence

Use this order so hardware, image and controls are settled before the race lobby is configured.

  1. Confirm the platform and headcount. On GT7, plan for no more than four players on PS5 or two on PS4.
  2. Connect every controller. Pair one compatible controller per player and verify menu navigation and inputs.
  3. Position the group. Ask the person calibrating to face the display center, then place everyone in their normal viewing positions.
  4. Run Display Settings Assistant. Match HDR or SDR to the console and display, then complete exposure and saturation calibration. In SDR, perform the bright- and dark-section corrections.
  5. Choose PS5 graphics priority. Select frame rate for a responsiveness-first race or ray tracing/resolution for an image-detail-first session. Account for the lower-resolution result when 120 Hz output is enabled with frame-rate priority.
  6. Configure each controller. In Options > Controllers, let each player select steering and pedal inputs and test them.
  7. Open the split-screen race screen. Player 1 applies the race settings, chooses from eligible rental or favorited garage cars, selects the course and layout, and starts the race.
  8. Run a short check lap. Confirm that every driver can see their portion of the display, steer predictably and brake without accidental input before committing to a longer event.

This order also prevents a subtle organizational problem: changing the display mode or connecting a controller after everyone has chosen a car can interrupt the lobby flow. Set the shared hardware first, then let Player 1 configure the event.

Diagnose common setup problems

There are more drivers than the console allows

Check the platform before troubleshooting. GT7’s documented local limit is four on PS5 and two on PS4. A fifth controller cannot raise the PS5 limit, and a third local driver cannot be added to the PS4 split-screen mode described by the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A player cannot join

Verify that the controller is compatible with the console, paired, powered and recognized in the system interface. GT7 requires one controller for each player. If the pad works in the console menus but not in the race, return to the split-screen race screen and assign it again before starting. If you are considering a purchase, compatibility with the exact console is the requirement established here; no particular model is mandated.

The image looks washed out or too dark

Check whether the console is outputting HDR or SDR and whether the display supports that path. Re-run Display Settings Assistant while facing the screen center. Follow the exposure and saturation prompts; for SDR, redo both the bright- and dark-section corrections. Do not import another display’s values.

Motion feels less smooth than expected

On PS5, compare Prioritize Frame Rate with Prioritize Ray Tracing/Resolution. Frame-rate priority is the documented choice for the highest possible frame rate, although it can simplify effects. If 120 Hz output is enabled, remember that this option lowers resolution. If the group values visual detail more, the ray-tracing/resolution option may be preferable.

A driver dislikes the controls

Open Options > Controllers and change that player’s steering or pedal scheme. GT7 supports three steering methods and three pedal arrangements, so there is no reason to make every participant use the same mapping. The available documentation does not verify separate assist settings for Player 2, so do not assume solo-play options are independently configurable in split-screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players disagree about the “best” mode

Use a short, identical practice section in both PS5 graphics modes and let the group compare what it can actually see and feel. A shared decision based on the race’s purpose is more useful than treating either option as objectively superior. Remember that ray tracing is disabled in response-sensitive race sections even when the visual-priority option is selected.

What can and cannot be generalized to other racing games

The strongest primary documentation for this topic is GT7’s manual. Other split-screen racers may have different player caps, controller requirements, calibration menus, HDR behavior or performance modes. Treat the GT7 sequence as a checklist of questions rather than a universal settings prescription.

  • Look up the game’s local-player limit for the exact console edition.
  • Confirm whether every local player needs a separate controller and whether wireless or older-generation pads are supported.
  • Find the game’s display calibration tool and use it with the actual console-and-screen combination.
  • Check whether performance, quality, ray-tracing or 120 Hz modes alter resolution or effects.
  • Record the available steering and pedal mappings, then let each driver test their own layout.
  • Verify which race settings Player 1 controls and which options, if any, can be changed separately by other players.

Without primary documentation for a particular title, claims about a universal “best” setting, identical Player 2 controls or cross-game latency benefits would go beyond what is established here. The same caution applies to display size, viewing-distance formulas and numerical controller-latency promises: none is established by the GT7 documentation used for this guide.

Should I use HDR or SDR for GT7?

Use the output path supported by the connected display and selected on the console. Run the Display Settings Assistant while facing the screen center; in SDR, complete both the bright- and dark-section corrections.

Is Prioritize Frame Rate better than Prioritize Ray Tracing/Resolution?

Neither is universally best. Frame-rate priority favors the highest possible frame rate and smoother response, while ray-tracing/resolution priority favors visual detail. With 120 Hz output enabled, frame-rate priority produces lower resolution, and ray tracing is disabled in response-sensitive race sections.

What controller layout should beginners use?

Left-stick steering with R2/L2 accelerator and brake is a practical starting point because it provides gradual steering and separate pedal controls. GT7 also supports directional-button or motion steering and ×/□ or right-stick pedals, so each driver should use the arrangement that feels predictable.

Can Player 2 use different controls from Player 1?

The manual lists multiple steering and pedal schemes that can be changed in Options > Controllers, so players should test their own layouts. The documentation does not establish that every solo-play assist or setting can be configured independently for Player 2 in split-screen.

What should I buy if one local player has no controller?

Buy an additional controller confirmed as compatible with the exact console. The documented requirement is one controller per player; the available information does not establish a required model, price, retailer or controller-latency specification.

The Bottom Line

For a dependable GT7 split-screen session, stay within the console’s player limit, connect one compatible controller per driver, calibrate HDR or SDR on the actual display, and let each person choose a comfortable control scheme. On PS5, start with Prioritize Frame Rate for responsive racing, but compare the ray-tracing/resolution option when visual detail matters more and remember the 120 Hz lower-resolution trade-off. Use these steps as a GT7-specific example, then verify the limits and menus of any other racing game.
