There is no officially verified “best” controller setup for every Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds player. The dependable starting point is to turn on only the assist that solves your specific problem, then disable assists one at a time as you gain confidence. SEGA identifies three assists—Steering Assist, Auto Accelerate, and Auto Trick—and says they make control easier. The game’s Standard and Team Sonic Racing layouts also serve different muscle memories, so comfort and consistency matter more than copying another player’s button map.

Use the setup guide below as a decision framework rather than a claim about the fastest possible configuration. Official guidance recommends Time Trial ghost lines, a suitable class, and adjustable rival strength for practice, but it does not establish that any particular assist combination produces the quickest lap.

A practical starting setup

Begin with the fewest changes that address the difficulty you are actually experiencing. If you are running wide, hitting barriers, or repeatedly leaving the track, enable Steering Assist first. If holding the accelerator for an entire race is tiring or causes missed inputs, try Auto Accelerate. If aerial trick timing is the part you cannot execute reliably, add Auto Trick. After several races, switch off one assist and compare how the car feels before changing anything else.

This sequence is an editorial starting point based on SEGA’s statement that the three assists simplify control. It is not a measured fastest setup, and the available official material does not publish performance percentages or a universal competitive configuration. A setting that reduces workload for one player can remove a type of direct control another player prefers.

What each assist does

Steering Assist

SEGA lists Steering Assist as an option for making difficult driving easier. The official support guidance names the setting but does not provide a universal technical description of exactly how strongly it intervenes in every situation. Read the current in-game description for your version before deciding how it behaves on barriers, corners, jumps, or unusual surfaces.

For a new player, Steering Assist is the logical first test because steering errors can cascade: a missed corner can cost speed, trigger a collision, and leave you badly positioned for the next section. Turn it on, drive the same course several times, and watch whether your path becomes more consistent. If you feel unable to make deliberate line changes, reduce assistance by testing it off in Time Trial rather than assuming a stronger or weaker hidden level exists.

Auto Accelerate

The official manual describes Auto Accelerate as removing the need to continuously provide acceleration input. That makes it useful when repeated throttle presses are uncomfortable, when you are learning several other controls at once, or when an accessibility need makes sustained input difficult.

Auto Accelerate does not answer steering, drifting, item use, or trick decisions for you. Keep those controls in your normal layout and evaluate whether the reduced workload lets you make cleaner corner entries. If you prefer to feather acceleration manually for a particular maneuver, compare both modes on the same section of track; the manual description establishes the reduced input requirement, not a guaranteed speed advantage.

Auto Trick

SEGA identifies Auto Trick as an assist that makes aerial trick control easier. The French online manual adds an important qualification: assisted tricks happen automatically, while manual tricks remain possible, and manual execution may produce more tricks. Treat that statement as a description of the assisted behavior, not as a promise that manual tricks always improve a race result.

Use Auto Trick when missed aerial inputs are costing you consistency. Once you can complete a course reliably, test it off on a track with frequent jumps. Compare successful landings, missed opportunities, and how comfortable the timing feels. Keep it on if reliability and reduced cognitive load matter more to you; switch it off if you want to choose each trick yourself.

Choose a setup by your goal

If you are new to the game

Start a few races with Steering Assist on. Add Auto Accelerate if maintaining throttle is distracting and Auto Trick if aerial inputs are the immediate obstacle. Do not change all three settings after every mistake: run enough laps to identify a pattern, then alter one setting. Once you can finish without frequent recoveries, turn off the assist that seems least necessary and repeat the same course.

If you want fewer repeated inputs

Try Auto Accelerate first. It directly addresses continuous acceleration input, while Steering Assist and Auto Trick address separate tasks. Leave those other assists unchanged until you know whether steering or aerial control also needs help. This keeps the result understandable and avoids attributing an improvement to the wrong setting.

If your priority is manual control

Disable assists one at a time, beginning with the one that least affects your current mistakes. Use Time Trial rather than a high-pressure race so you can observe corner entry, drift timing, jump inputs, and recovery. The official sources do not establish an objectively faster all-assists-off configuration, so judge success by control and repeatability as well as lap time.

If you already use Team Sonic Racing controls

The manual documents both Standard Controls and Team Sonic Racing Controls. If you have muscle memory from that control style and your platform offers the preset, try it in a low-stakes race. The existence of the layout is documented; no official source claims that it improves results. Keep the arrangement that lets you steer, accelerate, drift, and perform other actions without hesitation.

Controller layouts and button caveats

The online manual separates Standard and Team Sonic Racing layouts and provides different diagrams for land, flight, and water. Both layouts use the left stick for steering or directional input. In the PlayStation-style Team Sonic Racing diagram, acceleration is assigned to R1 or R2 and drifting to L1 or L2 while on land; in water, the shoulder input is used for Charge Jump.

Those labels should not be treated as a universal cross-platform map. The English manual’s button illustrations are platform-dependent, and the accessible manual identifies specifications from a closed-network-test period. Open your game’s own control screen and verify the current glyphs for your controller before relying on any printed or online diagram. A button name that is accurate for a PlayStation-style pad may not match an Xbox or Nintendo layout.

PlayStation-specific options

Sony’s PlayStation listing confirms that the PS5 version supports DualSense vibration. The same listing describes alternate presets or some remapping, basic stick-sensitivity and inversion options, and individual assists. These are claims about the PlayStation page, not a complete feature matrix for PC, Xbox, and Nintendo systems. Do not assume that every option appears with the same label or range elsewhere.

You do not need to purchase a particular controller to use the assists. On PS5, use the pad you already have, check the game’s control menu, and adjust sensitivity or inversion only if your own steering feels too slow, too twitchy, or directionally unfamiliar. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether an improvement came from sensitivity, inversion, a layout preset, or an assist.

  1. From the main menu, select Help & Options.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Controls.
  4. Select the available layout or assist you want to test, then confirm the change and return to a race or practice session.

The same support article says button size and opacity can be changed and that buttons can be dragged. Its instructions appear to concern a touch-based layout, so apply those details only where your version actually presents touch controls. Do not assume that a touch-layout instruction describes physical-controller remapping on every platform.

A practice routine that isolates settings

SEGA’s official tips recommend Time Trial ghost lines, choosing a class that suits you, and changing rival strength. Combine those suggestions with a controlled test so your settings decision is based on repeatable driving rather than one unusually good or bad race.

  1. Choose one course and class. Keep the class constant while testing. Changing vehicle class and assists together makes the comparison unclear.
  2. Start with your proposed setup. Drive several laps and note where errors occur: steering, sustained acceleration, or aerial tricks.
  3. Use ghost lines as visual references. In Time Trial, follow another player’s line to study braking points, corner entry, and when the vehicle leaves the racing line. A ghost line is a practice aid, not proof that its settings are superior.
  4. Adjust rival strength separately. If normal races are overwhelming, lower rival strength while learning. If you are winning comfortably, raise it to add pressure after your control is stable.
  5. Change one assist. Turn off or enable only one setting, then repeat the same course and class. Record consistency as well as your best lap.
  6. Keep the configuration that serves your goal. A slightly slower but repeatable setup can be more useful for learning than a faster lap produced by an accidental shortcut or unusually clean run.

How to transition from assisted to manual driving

Phase 1: Stabilize the basics

Keep the assist that addresses your largest source of crashes. Concentrate on steering inputs, corner approach, and recovering after contact. If acceleration is automatic, use the available attention to learn the course rather than repeatedly checking whether you are still holding the throttle.

Phase 2: Remove one source of help

When you can complete the course reliably, disable one assist and repeat the same practice. Do not simultaneously change layout, stick sensitivity, class, and rival strength. If performance drops sharply, restore the previous setting, identify the specific input that failed, and try again after focused practice.

Phase 3: Test manual tricks

If Auto Trick was enabled, choose a course with regular aerial sections and practice manual timing in Time Trial. The French manual says manual execution may yield more tricks, but it does not quantify the difference. Keep manual tricks only if you can land them consistently without sacrificing the rest of the lap.

Phase 4: Tune for real races

After each assist change feels comfortable in Time Trial, test it against rivals at a strength that challenges you without hiding the cause of mistakes. A setting that works on an empty practice lap may feel different when traffic, items, and pressure are added.

Common problems and fixes

“I still run wide with Steering Assist on.”

Steering Assist is intended to make control easier, not to replace course knowledge or guarantee every corner. Check the current in-game description, verify that you are using the intended layout, and practice the same turn in Time Trial. If the issue is a twitchy or unfamiliar stick, inspect platform-specific sensitivity options before adding another assist.

“Auto Accelerate feels strange.”

Because Auto Accelerate removes continuous acceleration input, your attention shifts to steering, drifting, and other actions. Run a short comparison on the same course with the setting on and off. Keep the mode that lets you make deliberate decisions; there is no official claim that either mode is universally faster.

“Auto Trick did not give me the trick I expected.”

Assisted tricks are automatic according to the French manual, while manual tricks remain possible. Confirm that you are airborne and that the current version’s control screen matches the input you are attempting. If you want to select tricks yourself, disable Auto Trick and practice the sequence in Time Trial.

“The online button diagram does not match my controller.”

Use the in-game controls screen as the final authority. The manual distinguishes layouts and platform-dependent button glyphs, and it reflects specifications identified with a closed-network-test context. Verify land, flight, and water actions separately rather than assuming one diagram applies everywhere.

“I cannot find touch-layout options.”

SEGA’s support article describes button size, opacity, and dragging in what appears to be a touch-based layout. Those controls may not appear for a physical gamepad or on every platform. Look for the options presented by your version instead of applying the touch instructions literally.

What “best” means for your controller setup

For a beginner, “best” usually means finishing with fewer errors and a manageable number of inputs. That points to Steering Assist, with Auto Accelerate or Auto Trick added only when those tasks are the specific problem. For an experienced player, “best” may mean deciding every steering correction, throttle change, and aerial trick manually; that points to disabling assists individually and validating the result in Time Trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most defensible approach is therefore adaptive: select the layout your hands already understand, enable the smallest assist that removes a real obstacle, and reassess after deliberate practice. Official SEGA guidance supports the assists and the practice tools, but it does not name a single winning configuration. Your course, class, controller, platform, and comfort level determine the final choice.
