For most people, buy the standard 1 TB PS5. Sony’s US direct-store price is $649, it is the lower-cost PlayStation option, and PlayStation’s official GTA VI message says the game will play best on PS5. Choose the $899 2 TB PS5 Pro if you have a premium 4K display, want more built-in storage, and value the PS5 Pro Enhanced presentation enough to pay $250 more. Choose Xbox Series X if your friends, existing games, discs, or Xbox services are already there; Rockstar confirms GTA VI for Xbox Series X|S as well.

Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a scheduled release date of November 19, 2026. No manufacturer has published GTA VI-specific resolution or frame-rate modes, so advertised capabilities such as “up to 120 FPS” must not be treated as a performance promise for this game.

What is confirmed about GTA 6

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists only current-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, with November 19, 2026 shown as the launch date. There is no PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, or Nintendo platform listed in that announcement. Treat the date as the currently announced schedule; Rockstar can change launch timing, features, bundles, or platform policies.

Rockstar’s support information says the physical version contains a download code. A boxed copy therefore does not necessarily mean the whole game is on a readable disc: whichever console you buy, plan for an internet download and enough free storage.

PlayStation Blog wrote on June 24, 2026: “Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” The PlayStation Store labels GTA VI “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” That label confirms a Pro enhancement designation, not a published frame-rate, resolution, or graphics-mode specification.

Quick recommendation by buyer type

If you are… Buy Why
Starting from scratch and wanting the safest value Standard PS5 1 TB It is the least expensive full-featured PlayStation route at Sony’s listed $649 US price and is the platform Sony says will play GTA VI best.
Using a large 4K display and caring about image quality PS5 Pro 2 TB The 2 TB SSD and 16.7-teraflop RDNA-based GPU give it the strongest published PlayStation hardware specification, while GTA VI carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.
Already owning Xbox games, accessories, or playing with Xbox friends Xbox Series X GTA VI is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, and staying in your existing ecosystem may be worth more than a platform switch.
Buying physical games or UHD Blu-ray movies Disc-equipped model you can verify locally Check the exact SKU. The Xbox Series X disc model includes a UHD Blu-ray drive; digital editions require downloads and do not provide the same disc use.

Prices and storage: what the current listings show

The following are US list prices found in 2026 direct-store listings. Retail prices, bundles, stock, taxes, and regional equivalents can change, so verify the listing for your country before paying.

Console or listing Storage US list price found Important qualification
PS5 Pro 2 TB SSD $899 Sony Interactive Entertainment direct-store listing, 2026.
PS5 1 TB $649 Sony Interactive Entertainment direct-store listing, 2026.
PS5 Digital Edition 825 GB $599 Sony Interactive Entertainment direct-store listing, 2026; verify the exact digital configuration and any drive option in your region.
Xbox Series X 2 TB $799.99 Xbox US listing, 2026; confirm whether the 2 TB configuration and disc drive are included in the regional SKU you are viewing.
Xbox Series X Digital Edition 1 TB $749.99 Xbox US listing, 2026; digital configuration, so check disc requirements before purchase.

The $250 difference between the $649 PS5 and $899 PS5 Pro is a hardware and storage premium, not a GTA VI admission fee. Both are confirmed GTA VI platforms. The $599 PS5 Digital Edition saves $50 against the 1 TB PS5 listing but has 825 GB and a digital-first purchase model, which can matter if you collect discs or expect a very large install.

Xbox pricing is harder to compare directly because Microsoft’s US listings show more than one Series X storage configuration. The table records the published figures rather than assuming that a particular 1 TB disc SKU is available everywhere. Confirm the model number, storage capacity, drive, warranty, and included controller on the checkout page.

Hardware differences that matter for GTA 6

PS5 Pro

Sony’s current PS5 Pro specification manual lists an 8-core Zen 2 CPU, a 16.7 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU, and a 2 TB SSD. Those are published component specifications, not a GTA VI benchmark. They explain why the Pro is aimed at buyers who want additional graphics headroom and storage, but they do not establish a particular mode such as 4K at 60 frames per second.

GTA VI’s PlayStation Store entry is marked PS5 Pro Enhanced. Until Rockstar explains the enhancement, do not assume which combination of resolution scaling, ray tracing, draw distance, texture quality, or frame rate it will use. The useful conclusion is narrower: the Pro has an officially recognized enhancement path, while the ordinary PS5 remains an officially supported console.

Standard PS5

The standard PS5 is the mainstream PlayStation choice in this decision. Sony lists the 1 TB model at $649 in the US direct store, and PlayStation’s GTA VI marketing specifically says the game will play best on PS5. The available evidence does not provide a separate GTA VI performance table for the standard model, so avoid buying it on the assumption of a named graphics mode that has not been announced.

Xbox Series X

Microsoft’s official Series X specification page lists a 12 TFLOPS RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, a 1 TB SSD for the listed configuration, a True 4K target, and support for up to 120 FPS. The disc model includes a UHD Blu-ray drive. “True 4K” and “up to 120 FPS” describe platform capability and marketing targets; they are not GTA VI guarantees. Rockstar has confirmed the game on Xbox Series X|S but has not published its Xbox resolution or frame-rate modes.

On paper, the Pro and Series X use different published GPU figures and architectures, so teraflops alone cannot predict which version will look or run better. Game-engine tuning, image reconstruction, CPU limits, storage streaming, display settings, and Rockstar’s final patches all matter.

Will GTA 6 run better on Xbox Series X or PS5?

There is no responsible frame-rate winner to declare yet. Rockstar has confirmed both platforms, while PlayStation has made the specific statement that GTA VI will play best on PS5. That statement is an official positioning claim, not a numerical test result. It does not tell us whether a particular Xbox mode, resolution, or patch will match or differ from a PlayStation mode.

Do not treat the Xbox page’s “up to 120 FPS” wording as evidence that GTA VI will run at 120 frames per second. Likewise, do not interpret the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge as proof of 4K/60 or 4K/120. Wait for Rockstar’s final technical details, launch reviews, and updates before making a performance claim.

Is PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6?

The Pro is worth considering when its specific advantages fit your setup, not simply because the game is important.

Buy the Pro when these conditions apply

  • You use a high-quality 4K television or monitor where improved image detail, stability, or advanced effects are visible from your normal seating distance.
  • You want 2 TB built in and would otherwise need to manage installs or buy additional storage sooner.
  • You are comfortable paying $899, which is $250 above Sony’s listed 1 TB PS5 price.
  • You expect to play other titles that receive PS5 Pro enhancements, not only GTA VI.
  • You prefer the PlayStation ecosystem and want the highest published PlayStation specification available for this release.

Stay with the standard PS5 when these conditions apply

  • Your display is ordinary 4K/60Hz or 1080p, so incremental image improvements may be difficult to see.
  • You would rather put $250 toward games, a larger display, headphones, or an eventual storage upgrade.
  • You mainly want a confirmed GTA VI console and do not need extra capacity on day one.
  • You are unwilling to buy on assumptions about a performance mode that Rockstar has not published.

The standard PS5 is not a compatibility compromise. It is one of the two PlayStation 5 options officially supported for GTA VI, and the platform-level PlayStation statement applies to PS5 rather than restricting the game to the Pro.

When Xbox Series X is the better GTA 6 purchase

Xbox can be the correct choice even if the PS5 recommendation fits a first-time buyer. Your existing library, friends list, accessories, account history, and subscription usage can outweigh small or unknown differences in a future game patch.

Choose Xbox if your ecosystem is already there

  • Your friends will play on Xbox and you value the same platform for multiplayer communication and shared purchases.
  • You already own Xbox games or accessories and want to avoid rebuilding a library.
  • You prefer Xbox system software, cloud saves, or the subscription ecosystem you already use.
  • You want UHD Blu-ray playback and buy boxed games or movies; verify that the exact Series X SKU you purchase has the drive.
  • You prefer the Xbox controller and interface enough that those everyday factors matter more than an unconfirmed GTA VI performance difference.

Rockstar’s platform listing explicitly includes Xbox Series X|S, so Series X owners are not relying on backward compatibility or an unofficial workaround. The unresolved issue is the final technical profile, not whether the game is planned for the console.

Display requirements and refresh-rate decisions

A premium console is most useful when the display can show its benefits. Before paying for a Pro or choosing Series X for a high-refresh setup, check your television or monitor’s inputs, resolution, refresh rate, HDR behavior, and whether its 120 Hz mode works at the resolution you intend to use.

  • 4K/120Hz display: gives a console room to use high-refresh output if a game offers it, but it does not force GTA VI to render at 120 FPS.
  • 4K/60Hz display: is a common fit for the standard PS5 and remains suitable for GTA VI; the game’s final mode will determine the actual output.
  • 1080p display: still works with these consoles, but spending $899 for image improvements you cannot display is difficult to justify.

Use the display’s native capabilities as a buying filter, not as a prediction of GTA VI performance. Rockstar’s eventual settings may include trade-offs between image quality and frame rate, and those details are not published yet.

Storage, discs, and installing GTA 6

The game’s final install size has not been announced in the supplied official information. Do not reserve a specific number of gigabytes or assume that a boxed copy eliminates downloading. Rockstar’s support page says the physical version contains a download code, so internet access and free storage remain part of the setup.

WD_BLACK 2TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

The PS5 Pro’s listed 2 TB is twice the capacity of the 1 TB Xbox Series X specification and larger than the 825 GB PS5 Digital Edition listing. More capacity is convenient if you keep several large games installed, but it is not proof that GTA VI itself will require a particular amount of space.

If you buy a digital edition, plan to obtain games through downloads and confirm the local drive policy before ordering. If you buy discs, verify that the console SKU has the required drive; storage capacity and disc capability are separate decisions.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Confirm the platform you actually need. Choose PS5, PS5 Pro, or Xbox Series X according to your friends, existing library, account, and controller preferences before comparing headline specifications.
  2. Set a total budget. Start with the console list price, then leave room for the game, a display or headset if needed, and storage expansion if your chosen model is small.
  3. Check the exact regional SKU. Record storage capacity, disc drive, included controller, warranty, and whether the price is a one-time list price, bundle, or promotion.
  4. Match the console to your display. A 4K/120Hz screen can make premium hardware more attractive; a 1080p screen weakens the case for paying extra for image quality.
  5. Decide physical versus digital ownership. Rockstar says the physical GTA VI version uses a download code, so either route still requires installation. Make sure the console supports how you buy other games and movies.
  6. Plan storage without guessing GTA VI’s size. Compare the listed 825 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities, but wait for Rockstar’s final install requirement before buying an expansion specifically for this game.
  7. Recheck launch information. Before release, verify Rockstar’s date, supported platforms, performance modes, enhancement labels, stock, and current prices because all can change.

Common mistakes to avoid

Buying the Pro solely for a promised frame rate

No official GTA VI frame-rate mode is published. The PS5 Pro Enhanced label supports the expectation of optimization, not a guaranteed 60 or 120 FPS result.

Assuming teraflops settle the comparison

PS5 Pro’s 16.7 TFLOPS and Series X’s 12 TFLOPS are measured within different hardware designs. They cannot, by themselves, establish image quality or frame rate in a specific game.

Confusing platform capability with game output

Xbox’s “True 4K” and “up to 120 FPS” statements describe what the hardware can target. GTA VI may use a different resolution, reconstruction method, or frame-rate mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the drive and download requirement

A physical GTA VI release containing a download code still needs an internet download. Confirm the console’s disc configuration and available storage before assuming a boxed purchase solves either issue.

Using an old price as a guarantee

The listed $899, $649, $599, $799.99, and $749.99 figures are current US listings found for 2026, not permanent worldwide prices. Taxes, bundles, stock, and regional pricing can change.

Bottom-line decision

Buy the standard 1 TB PS5 for the best balance of confirmed support, price, and PlayStation positioning. Move up to the 2 TB PS5 Pro when you have a display and budget that justify its $250 premium and you want the PS5 Pro Enhanced version of GTA VI. Buy Xbox Series X when the Xbox ecosystem, physical-media support, or your existing library is the deciding factor. Every option still requires checking the final release details because Rockstar has not announced GTA VI-specific performance modes.
