Xbox Series X is the best default choice for a buyer who puts Bethesda games first. Bethesda’s current catalog repeatedly lists Xbox Series X|S for releases such as Starfield, DOOM and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and Xbox ownership makes Game Pass the most important subscription advantage. That recommendation is about access and value, not a claim that every Bethesda or Activision Blizzard game is exclusive.
Choose PlayStation 5 instead if your friends, existing purchases or preferred console ecosystem are on PlayStation, or if your main target is current Call of Duty. Activision’s official Black Ops 7 listing includes PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 as well as Xbox and PC, so Call of Duty alone does not require Xbox.
Quick answer: which console should you buy?
- Best Bethesda-first purchase: Xbox Series X, especially if you expect to use a subscription library rather than buy every game separately.
- Best PlayStation-first purchase: PlayStation 5, when your friends, existing digital library or preferred controller and system features matter more than Xbox-first catalog access.
- Best for Call of Duty alone: Either current Xbox or PlayStation hardware. Black Ops 7 is officially listed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.
- Best mixed-library strategy: Compare the exact games you will play, the console generation they support, your subscription plans and the accounts where you already own downloadable content.
There is no single winner for every buyer because Bethesda and Activision Blizzard publish across multiple platforms. The useful distinction is whether you want Xbox-first access and Game Pass value, or whether PlayStation continuity is worth more to you.
What Bethesda’s current catalog indicates
Xbox Series X|S is the recurring platform listing
Bethesda’s official catalog repeatedly identifies Xbox Series X|S for current releases. The examples that matter most to a new-console buyer include Starfield, DOOM and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. That repeated listing is the strongest evidence for making Xbox Series X the default recommendation when Bethesda is your primary interest.

“Listed for Xbox Series X|S” is a catalog statement, not a promise that every future Bethesda title will be exclusive to Xbox or that every older game has identical support on every console. Publishers can change platforms, editions and service availability. Check the store page for the exact game and edition before you buy hardware for it.
PlayStation 5 appears for several Bethesda games
Bethesda’s catalog also lists PlayStation 5 for several games. Therefore, a PlayStation buyer is not automatically shut out of Bethesda’s current software. The relevant question is which titles you personally care about, not whether Bethesda as a whole is “on” one console.
Make a short list of must-play games and classify each one as Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, both, or an older-generation release. Do this before comparing bundles. A console that supports nine games you might play is less useful than one that supports the two games you will play every week.

Why Xbox Series X is the default Bethesda recommendation
First-party ownership changes the value calculation
Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda makes Xbox the most straightforward place to follow the publisher’s Xbox-listed releases. Ownership alone does not establish exclusivity for every title, but it does make Xbox the platform to examine first when a Bethesda game is announced with Xbox Series X|S support.
For a buyer who wants a single console for Bethesda releases, an Xbox Series X avoids having to guess whether a listed title will be available on another platform. You still need to verify each game’s final platform list, because catalog pages and release plans can change.
Game Pass is the major value differentiator
Xbox’s subscription library is the central reason the Series X recommendation can be better value than a rival console for a Bethesda-heavy player. If a game you want is included in the tier available in your region, the cost of access may be lower than buying that game separately. The calculation only works when the specific edition and tier you need are included and when you will actually play enough games to justify the recurring fee.
Subscription catalogs are not permanent ownership. A game can leave a catalog, a tier can change, and benefits can differ by country. Treat Game Pass as an access plan rather than a replacement for buying every game you want to keep indefinitely.

Who benefits most from Series X
- Players whose priority list contains several Xbox-listed Bethesda releases.
- Households that want one subscription to cover a changing rotation of games.
- People starting a new digital library and therefore carrying little platform-specific history.
- Players whose friends already use Xbox services and can join them there without rebuilding a social group.
If none of those conditions applies, the subscription advantage may not offset the inconvenience of moving away from your current platform.
When PlayStation 5 is the better purchase
Your existing library and friends network have real value
Digital purchases, saved progress, downloadable expansions, achievements or trophies, and a regular multiplayer group can be more important than a platform-level catalog advantage. Before switching, list the games you would have to repurchase and the friends you would need to coordinate with. A nominally cheaper console can become the more expensive choice after replacing software and accessories.
Call of Duty does not force an Xbox purchase
Activision’s official support page for Black Ops 7 says: “Available now on Xbox (Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One), PlayStation (PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4), PC via Xbox on PC, Battle.net, and Steam.” This makes PlayStation 5 a legitimate choice for a Call of Duty-focused buyer. Confirm the edition and generation you intend to buy, because feature parity and release support can differ between current- and previous-generation versions.
PlayStation continuity can outweigh subscription savings
Choose PlayStation 5 when your household already uses PlayStation accounts, your preferred multiplayer group is there, or you value continuing an existing library more than accessing an Xbox subscription catalog. This is an ecosystem decision rather than a statement that PlayStation has broader Bethesda access.

Black Ops 7 has broad platform coverage
The official platform list for Black Ops 7 includes Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. That list means the game itself should not determine an Xbox-versus-PlayStation purchase. Decide instead on the controller and friends ecosystem you will use, the generation of console you want, and where your other games are owned.
Because Activision can publish different editions and services over time, verify the current store listing when you purchase. Do not assume that a cross-platform launch guarantees identical technical features, upgrade rights or downloadable-content transfers between generations.
Diablo IV introduced an important Game Pass milestone
Xbox announced that “the first Activision Blizzard game on Xbox Game Pass will be Diablo IV, beginning March 28.” That announcement was published in 2024. It is a useful historical milestone for understanding why Game Pass matters to an Xbox buyer, but it is not a guarantee that every Activision Blizzard release will enter the service or remain there permanently.

How to decide whether Game Pass is worth it
Count games, not headlines
- Write down the Bethesda and Activision Blizzard games you expect to play during the next year.
- Mark which are included in the current Game Pass tier available to you, and which require a separate purchase.
- Remove games you would not realistically start. A catalog has no value if it only creates a larger backlog.
- Compare the current recurring subscription total with the purchase prices of the games you would otherwise buy. Use the price shown for your region and edition on the day you decide.
- Check whether multiplayer access, cloud features or other benefits in the selected tier matter to your household.
This method avoids treating “many games” as automatic savings. If you play one or two releases for a long period, buying them may be simpler. If you sample many games, a subscription can provide more flexibility.
Understand the access trade-off
A subscription grants access while the game and tier remain eligible and while your account is active. Buying a game separately can preserve access after a subscription ends, subject to the platform’s licensing terms. Decide whether you value variety now or permanent access to a smaller personal library.
Verify region, date and edition
Game availability, subscription tiers, prices and bundles change. Check the current store page before paying, especially when a title has standard, deluxe or expansion editions. The March 28 date attached to the Diablo IV announcement is a 2024 milestone, not a current price or availability promise.

Storage, controllers and other ownership costs
Storage is a planning issue, not just a specification
Large modern games can consume substantial space, but the available evidence does not establish a current storage figure for either console or for a particular game installation. Compare the exact console model, included drive, expansion options and current prices in the retailer listing you intend to use. Leave room for updates if you plan to keep several large titles installed.
Controller and accessory compatibility
Keep your existing accessories only when the manufacturer explicitly lists compatibility with the new console and game. Verify extra-controller requirements for local multiplayer, headset connections and charging equipment before checkout. Accessory prices and bundle contents are time- and region-sensitive, so they should be checked alongside the console rather than assumed from an older package.

Disc versus digital purchases
Choose the console edition that matches how you buy games. If you own discs or expect to buy used physical copies, confirm that the model you select includes the necessary drive. If your library is entirely digital, confirm that your existing purchases are tied to the account you will use and that the desired game edition is sold for the new console.

Backward compatibility is title-specific. Before replacing an older console, make a spreadsheet with four columns: game, account owner, physical or digital format, and target-console listing. Check each entry in the publisher or platform store. Record whether an upgrade is included, paid, or unavailable, and whether saved progress or downloadable content transfers.

Do not trade in the old console until you have signed into the new one, downloaded a representative sample of your library and confirmed that your saves and add-ons appear. Keep two-factor authentication and recovery details available; losing account access is a bigger obstacle than choosing between two capable consoles.
A practical buying process
Step 1: Define the must-play list
Separate “must play at launch,” “will play eventually” and “might try through a subscription.” Include Bethesda titles, Call of Duty, Diablo and any non-Bethesda games that keep your friends group on a platform. This prevents a single brand from dominating a decision that is really about your whole library.
Step 2: Check every platform and generation
Use the current official listing for each game. Record Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC separately; a game supporting an older console does not prove that every feature is identical on the current model.
Step 3: Price the complete setup
Add the console, required subscription, extra controller, headset, storage expansion and the first games you will buy. Use one region and one date for all prices. Do not compare a discounted bundle on one side with a full-price standalone console on the other.
Step 4: Apply the ecosystem test
Ask where your friends play, where your existing purchases live and which account contains your saved progress. Give those answers more weight than an uncertain future release. A platform switch is worthwhile only when the new access or value clearly compensates for migration costs.
Best Value
Step 5: Recheck live availability
Immediately before ordering, confirm console stock, bundle contents, the Game Pass tier and the current listing for each must-play title. Publishers can change catalogs and services after an article or announcement is published.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: assuming Bethesda means Xbox exclusivity
Fix: Treat Xbox Series X|S listings as strong access evidence, then verify whether the individual game also appears for PlayStation 5. Do not generalize from one release to the entire catalog.
Mistake: buying Xbox only for Call of Duty
Fix: The official Black Ops 7 listing includes both current Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Choose based on your friends, library and subscription plan instead.
