For a compact travel camera with the greatest reach, start with the Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 (called TZ99 in some markets). If you want a one-inch-type sensor and a built-in viewfinder in a pocketable zoom, consider the Sony RX100 VII. The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III is a conditional pick for its bright lens and tilting screen, but its value depends on finding one at a sensible local price.

There is no single best compact camera for every trip: the right choice depends on whether you need distant-subject zoom, better flexibility in dim light, a viewfinder, or video features. These are three distinct options, not an exhaustive or laboratory-tested ranking.

Which compact travel camera fits your trip?

Camera Best suited to Main trade-off
Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 / TZ99 Travelers who want broad zoom reach in a small camera Its small sensor is less favorable in low light, and it has no viewfinder.
Sony RX100 VII Travelers seeking a pocketable zoom with a one-inch-type sensor and built-in electronic viewfinder Its 24–200mm-equivalent zoom reaches less far than the Panasonic’s.
Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III Travelers who want a bright standard zoom, a tilting screen, and stills-and-video flexibility Availability and price can make it poor value; check your local market before buying.

The comparison is based on manufacturer specifications and cited camera guides, not a hands-on test. Prices and stock can vary by country and retailer.

What matters most in a compact travel camera?

Zoom reach versus lens brightness

A long zoom makes it easier to frame distant landmarks, wildlife, or details without changing lenses. A shorter zoom with a brighter maximum aperture can be more useful indoors or in the evening, when light is limited. Consider the kinds of scenes you actually expect to photograph instead of choosing by zoom ratio alone.

Sensor size and aperture work together

A larger sensor can help, but sensor size alone does not guarantee better photos. Lens brightness, focal length, and the shooting conditions matter too. The ZS99/TZ99 prioritizes a very broad range in a small body; the Sony and Canon offer one-inch-type sensors with shorter zoom ranges. The Canon’s lens is especially bright at the wide end, at f/1.8.

Viewfinder and screen

A built-in viewfinder can make framing easier in bright sunlight. The Sony RX100 VII has an electronic viewfinder, while the Panasonic ZS99/TZ99 does not. The Panasonic has a tilting touch display, and the Canon G7 X Mark III has a 3-inch tilt-type monitor, according to Canon’s U.S. specifications.

Three compact travel camera options

Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 / TZ99: choose it for reach

TechRadar identifies the camera as the ZS99 in North America and TZ99 in other markets. Its guide describes it as a 2025 model with a 30x optical zoom covering a 24–702mm-equivalent range, a 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch Live MOS sensor, an f/3.3–6.4 lens, a tilting touch display, and 4K video at 30fps. The guide also notes USB-C charging and the absence of a viewfinder. See TechRadar’s travel-camera guide.

Kodak PIXPRO FZ45 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 4X Optical Zoom, AA, Black
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
  • Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
  • LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use

Choose it when photographing distant subjects matters more than low-light flexibility. Its long reach comes with a small-sensor compromise, and shooting through the screen may be less convenient in bright sun. Confirm whether your market sells it as the ZS99 or TZ99 and check local stock.

Sony RX100 VII: choose it for a viewfinder and shorter zoom

The RX100 VII pairs a one-inch-type sensor with a 24–200mm-equivalent zoom and a built-in electronic viewfinder, according to compact-camera coverage. Sony’s product page provides its official specifications, including 4K recording details. Check Sony’s RX100 VII specifications; for the compact-camera comparison framing, see iTechGuides’ compact-camera guide.

Kodak PIXPRO C1 13MP Compact Digital Camera, 26mm Fixed Lens, Brown
  • 13MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor and a bright f/2.0 wide angle lens
  • 26mm Fixed Focus Lens: Wide angle framing for selfies, group shots, and travel scenes, with no zooming or focusing to adjust, just point and shoot
  • Flip Screen: 2.8in LCD screen tilts 180 degrees for selfies, vlogs, and group shots
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or content creation
  • Rechargeable Battery: Built-in lithium-ion battery with USB-C charging for on-the-go use

It is a possible fit if you want more reach than a standard compact zoom while retaining a viewfinder and a one-inch-type sensor. It does not reach as far as the Panasonic. The cited sources do not establish a current street price or stock position, so verify both locally.

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III: choose it if the price is right

Canon’s U.S. specifications list a 20.1-megapixel, one-inch stacked CMOS sensor; a 4.2x optical zoom with a 24–100mm-equivalent range; optical image stabilization; a 3-inch tilt-type monitor; and a maximum aperture of f/1.8 at wide angle and f/2.8 at telephoto. See Canon U.S.A.’s G7 X Mark III specifications.

This is the most natural of these three options for someone who wants a bright standard zoom and a tilting screen for casual stills and video, rather than long-distance reach. However, a September 29, 2026 RTINGS update moved it from its mid-range pick to an alternative because it had become difficult to find at reasonable prices. TechRadar also flags value concerns tied to popularity. Treat those as time-sensitive market assessments, not a guarantee about every retailer or region: RTINGS’ compact travel camera guide and TechRadar’s point-and-shoot guide.

How to make the choice

  1. Write down your most common subjects. For distant details and varied landscapes, prioritize the Panasonic’s 30x zoom. For street scenes, people, or indoor settings, consider the shorter zoom and brighter lens on the Canon, or the Sony’s one-inch-type sensor and viewfinder.
  2. Decide whether a viewfinder is essential. If you often shoot in direct sun, the Sony is the only one of these three with a built-in EVF. If a screen is enough, compare the tilt-screen designs on the Panasonic and Canon.
  3. Set a realistic local budget before settling on a model. Check the exact model name, availability, and current price in your country. This is particularly important for the Canon because its reasonable-price availability was already a concern in the September 29, 2026 RTINGS update.
  4. Check the video requirements you actually need. The Panasonic guide lists 4K at 30fps, and Sony publishes 4K recording specifications. If video is your priority, compare stabilization, audio inputs, recording limits, and handling in the exact regional version; the cited sources do not provide a complete three-way comparison on those details.

When a compact travel zoom is not the right type

If your main goal is creator-oriented or stabilized video rather than travel stills and optical zoom, a different kind of compact camera may fit better. Point-and-shoot guides treat video-focused models separately from long-zoom travel cameras; decide which matters most before narrowing your shortlist. TechRadar’s point-and-shoot coverage discusses that broader category.
