The 2024 iPad mini with A17 Pro is the strongest premium compact tablet for readers who want a sharp, bright screen, a small footprint, and the iPad app ecosystem. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 (8.7-inch Wi‑Fi) is the more flexible Android choice when removable storage for downloaded books and video matters more than display detail.
Those recommendations come from published specifications and a current buying-guide ranking, not hands-on testing. Prices, stock, cellular options, memory, and bundled accessories vary by country and retailer, so verify the exact local SKU before ordering.
At a glance: the two compact tablets that fit this brief
Both models are small enough to carry with a book or in a compact bag, but they target different priorities. The table uses manufacturer specifications for the listed configurations; it is not a side-by-side laboratory test.

Apple’s technical specifications are available at Apple’s iPad mini specifications page. Samsung’s figures refer to its Ireland-market product page for the Wi‑Fi model at Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A9 listing. TechRadar’s current buying guide names the iPad mini its best compact tablet and supplies the comparative buying context at TechRadar’s tablet guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What counts as a compact tablet for this use?
For reading and streaming, “compact” usually means a screen around eight to nine inches rather than a phone-sized display or a 10- to 13-inch productivity tablet. That size gives an ebook page, web article, or video enough room to be comfortable while keeping the device substantially easier to carry than a full-size slate.
Diagonal size alone does not determine comfort. A reader should also check:
- Resolution and pixel density: finer text edges reduce the visibly jagged appearance of small type.
- Brightness and reflections: higher brightness and an antireflective surface help in bright rooms, although neither replaces good lighting.
- Aspect ratio and app layout: the same ebook or streaming app can show different margins and controls on different screens.
- Weight and accessories: a case, stand, or keyboard adds to the carry weight that matters in daily use.
- Storage strategy: downloaded video and large offline libraries can fill a small tablet quickly.
Decide first whether the tablet will be mostly an e-reader, a video screen, a general web device, or a mixture. That decision determines whether display quality, expandable storage, operating-system compatibility, or the lowest purchase price deserves the most weight.

Why its display suits books and articles
The iPad mini’s specification set is unusually strong for a small tablet. Its 8.3-inch panel has a 2266 × 1488 resolution, 326 pixels per inch, a stated 500-nit brightness rating, an antireflective coating, and True Tone. Together, those features make it the better choice on paper for fine ebook type, dense web pages, comics, and magazines. The figures are Apple’s published specifications rather than an independent brightness or readability test.
True Tone changes the display’s color temperature to match surrounding light. Some readers like the warmer appearance for long sessions; others prefer to disable it when color accuracy matters. The antireflective treatment can reduce distracting reflections, but a lamp positioned behind you can still wash out any glossy tablet.
Portability and hardware headroom
Apple lists the Wi‑Fi model at 293 grams. That is lighter than the cited Galaxy Tab A9 configuration, although the practical difference depends on the case and any grip or stand attached. The A17 Pro chip also gives the mini a clear specification advantage for demanding iPadOS apps, multitasking, image work, and games. A chip name is not a promise that every app will run faster in every situation; it indicates the hardware platform, not a published independent benchmark for this comparison.

Storage and accessories
Apple offers 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB capacities. There is no microSD slot listed in the buying-guide comparison, so the capacity selected at purchase is the capacity you should plan around. If you keep many downloaded films, large games, or an extensive photo library, choosing more internal storage is the only built-in expansion path.
The mini supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB‑C), according to Apple’s specifications. A Pencil can be useful for handwritten notes, marking up articles, or annotating PDFs, but it is an optional accessory and not necessary for reading or streaming. A case should be matched to the 2024 iPad mini generation and its camera and button cutouts.
Trade-offs to accept
- The purchase price is positioned at a premium compared with budget Android tablets; current prices and promotions were not established here.
- There is no removable-storage option, so heavy offline users need to choose their capacity carefully.
- TechRadar identifies battery life as an area that could be better. Its guide may list an “up to” figure, but that is not an independently measured result and should not be treated as a guaranteed runtime.
- iPadOS is the right fit only if the apps and services you use are available and comfortable on Apple’s platform. An Android phone does not prevent you from using an iPad, but account syncing and file transfer may differ from an all-Android setup.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A9: the compact Android route
What the cited configuration provides
Samsung’s Ireland-market page describes the Wi‑Fi Galaxy Tab A9 as an 8.7-inch tablet weighing 332 grams, with a 1340 × 800 TFT display and a refresh rate of up to 60 Hz. The examined SKU has 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory. Samsung says other configurations vary by country or region, so those numbers must not be assumed for every A9 listing.
The lower resolution is the central trade-off. Text and interface elements will not have the same pixel density as on the iPad mini, and fine type may look less crisp at comparable sizes. Video can still be enjoyable, particularly from a normal viewing distance, but the panel is not equivalent to the mini’s sharper display. These are published specifications, not a subjective viewing test.
microSD makes offline media easier to manage
Samsung supports microSD cards up to 1 TB, with the card sold separately. This is the A9’s most important practical advantage for downloaded books, films, music, maps, or travel documents. Before buying a card, confirm that your local A9 variant has the same slot and capacity limit; the cited page is specifically for Ireland.

Expandable storage does not automatically move every app or every protected download to the card. Streaming services can impose their own download rules, and some applications keep essential files in internal storage. Treat the card as a large media and document space rather than a guarantee that internal storage will never fill.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not confuse the A9 with the A9+
Samsung lists the Galaxy Tab A9+ as an 11-inch model with a 90 Hz display. It is not the same compact 8.7-inch tablet. Check the model name, screen size, storage, memory, and model number in the retailer’s specification block before paying, especially when search results place the A9 and A9+ beside each other.
Who should choose it
The A9 makes sense for someone already comfortable with Android, who wants familiar Google-based apps and a microSD slot, and who accepts a lower-resolution TFT panel. It can be a sensible travel or family media tablet when the content is stored locally and the buyer values low-cost storage expansion more than maximum text sharpness. Local price, carrier status, memory, and availability still need verification.
Reading quality: look beyond the diagonal measurement
The iPad mini is smaller by diagonal measurement yet has the higher resolution and pixel density. That illustrates why “larger screen” and “better reading screen” are not synonyms. A compact tablet with a lower-resolution panel may show the same words or video, but small fonts can require a larger size or more zooming.
Use this process when comparing a listing:
- Open the manufacturer’s specification page and record the exact resolution, panel type, brightness rating, and any antireflective treatment.
- Check whether the retailer is selling the same generation and screen size named by the manufacturer.
- Consider the content: novels with adjustable type are more forgiving than fixed-layout PDFs, scanned magazines, spreadsheets, or web pages designed for wide screens.
- Decide whether you read outdoors, under strong overhead lights, or mostly in a dim room. Brightness and reflections matter differently in each setting.
- Plan the case and stand. A cover that lets the tablet sit at a stable angle can improve comfort more than a small difference in diagonal size.
For long sessions, use the operating system’s text-size, display-scaling, and dark-mode controls. Those settings can improve comfort, but they cannot create detail that the panel does not physically provide.
Streaming and downloaded video
Both tablets are intended to run mainstream streaming apps through their respective operating systems, but app availability, subscription requirements, and download limits are controlled by each service. Confirm that your preferred services support the operating system and region before buying, especially if a particular service is essential.
For online viewing, Wi‑Fi quality and the tablet’s speakers may matter more than storage. For travel, storage becomes decisive:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- On the iPad mini, select 256 GB or 512 GB if your library includes many large video downloads, because no microSD expansion is listed.
- On the Galaxy Tab A9, a compatible microSD card can hold additional media, but the card is a separate purchase and protected apps may still reserve internal space.
- Download content while connected to a reliable network, check the service’s expiry rules, and test playback before leaving home.
A screen’s resolution does not guarantee a particular streaming resolution. The service, subscription tier, network conditions, app, and downloaded file determine what you actually watch.

Everyday use: apps, accounts, and carrying habits
Operating-system preference is a practical buying criterion, not a technicality. TechRadar recommends considering how the tablet’s OS fits your phone ecosystem and the apps you already use. List the essentials—ebook stores, library apps, password managers, cloud storage, note tools, banking, messaging, and streaming—and check each platform’s current app listing.
An iPad mini is the natural extension of an Apple-centered setup, particularly if you already use iPad-specific accessories or apps. The Galaxy Tab A9 is the more straightforward companion for an Android-centered workflow and removable media. Either tablet can browse the web and play video, but file sharing, notifications, accessory pairing, and purchase histories may feel smoother when devices use the same ecosystem.
For daily carry, include the case, screen protector, charger, and any stand in your decision. The bare-device weights in the table are useful for comparison, but they are not the weight you will hold in real use. A tablet that stays in a bag may justify a protective case; one carried in one hand for an hour may benefit from a lighter cover and a secure grip.
How to choose the right model
Choose the iPad mini when these priorities dominate
- You want the sharpest reading display among the two documented options.
- You prefer iPadOS or need an iPad app or accessory.
- You value the A17 Pro platform for demanding apps and expect to keep the tablet for several years.
- You are comfortable selecting enough internal storage at checkout because a microSD card is not listed.
- You want Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB‑C) support for notes and markup.
Choose the Galaxy Tab A9 when these priorities dominate
- You want Android and its familiar app and account environment.
- You expect to download a large amount of media and want a microSD path.
- You can accept the cited model’s 1340 × 800 TFT display for ebooks, browsing, and video.
- You are buying in a market where the local A9 configuration, price, and stock have been verified.
Pause before buying either one
- Your main requirement is a large split-screen workspace; an eight- to nine-inch tablet may feel constrained.
- You need cellular connectivity but have only checked Wi‑Fi listings.
- You require a particular streaming app, ebook store, or accessibility feature that you have not checked on the selected operating system.
- You are comparing a sale price from a different generation or region.
Buying checklist: verify the exact tablet, not just the product family
- Record the model number. Copy it from the manufacturer or retailer listing and compare it with the box and checkout page.
- Confirm the screen size. Make sure an A9 listing is not the 11-inch A9+ and that an iPad mini listing is the 2024 A17 Pro generation you intend to buy.
- Check storage and memory. For the mini, select 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB deliberately. For the A9, verify the local 64 GB/4 GB or another regional configuration.
- Check connectivity. Determine whether the listing is Wi‑Fi-only or cellular and whether it includes the bands and SIM or eSIM arrangement you need.
- Verify expansion. For the A9, confirm the microSD slot and the supported capacity on the local Samsung page. For the mini, plan as if the selected internal capacity is final.
- Price the accessories. Add a correctly sized case, charger if needed, screen protector, and—if choosing the A9—a compatible microSD card.
- Check returns and warranty. Terms differ by country and seller, and they matter if the delivered configuration does not match the listing.
Retail promotions and stock change quickly. Use the manufacturer page to identify the product, then compare the exact local configuration and total checkout cost rather than relying on an old deal headline.

Set up a compact tablet for reading and travel
- Update before downloading. Connect to Wi‑Fi, install available system and app updates, and restart if requested.
- Sign in to the correct ecosystem. Use the Apple Account or Android/Google account that owns your books, apps, and subscriptions.
- Adjust reading comfort. Set text size, display scaling, brightness, color temperature, and dark mode to the lighting where you will read. On the mini, test True Tone rather than assuming one setting suits everyone.
- Organize offline content. Download only what you need for the trip, note each service’s expiry policy, and leave free internal space for updates.
- Prepare storage. If using the A9, insert and format the microSD card according to Samsung’s instructions, then set compatible apps to save media there. Keep essential app data in internal storage.
- Secure the device. Enable a passcode or biometric unlock, device-finding features, and automatic backups before carrying it outside.
- Test the complete setup. Open an ebook, a downloaded video, headphones or speakers, and your key apps with Wi‑Fi disabled. This catches login and download problems while you can still fix them.
What about an inexpensive Fire HD 8?
Smaller-screen media tablets from Amazon and other lower-cost Android manufacturers can be a budget path, but the current Fire HD 8 generation was not validated for this comparison. Treat it as a possibility only after checking the exact model year, display and performance specifications, installed app ecosystem, streaming-service support, region, price, and update policy. It should not be ranked alongside the iPad mini and Galaxy Tab A9 on the evidence presented here.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by screen size alone
An 8.7-inch diagonal does not make the A9’s display more detailed than the iPad mini’s smaller panel. Compare resolution, pixel density, brightness, and surface treatment with the content you actually read.
Assuming every regional SKU is identical
Samsung explicitly says A9 configurations vary by country or region. Memory, storage, connectivity, color, and bundled items can change. Apple storage and connectivity options also need to be checked at the local checkout page.
Forgetting offline storage limits
Protected downloads may not move freely to removable storage, while the iPad mini has no listed microSD slot. Estimate your library before choosing capacity.
Confusing a buying-guide claim with a test result
TechRadar’s “best compact tablet” designation is an editorial ranking. The weight, resolution, brightness, and storage figures are manufacturer specifications. Neither source is a side-by-side endurance, readability, or performance test for this article.
Adding the wrong case or card
Cases are generation-specific, and microSD cards must match the A9’s supported format and capacity. Verify the tablet model number before ordering accessories.
Bottom line for different readers
Choose the 2024 iPad mini if your first priorities are crisp text, a polished small-screen iPad experience, Apple app and accessory compatibility, and the A17 Pro platform. Select internal storage carefully because expansion is not listed.
Choose the Galaxy Tab A9 if Android familiarity and inexpensive, removable storage for downloaded books and video matter more than maximum display sharpness. Confirm the local model, since the documented specifications are for Samsung’s Ireland-market Wi‑Fi SKU.
