For the smallest, lightest mainstream reader, choose the 2024 Amazon Kindle. Its 157.8 × 108.6 × 8.0 mm body weighs 158 g, has a 6-inch 300 ppi display and 16 GB of storage, and Amazon explicitly positions it for hand-held and back-pocket carrying.
Choose the Kobo Clara BW instead if waterproofing and Kobo’s reading ecosystem matter more than saving 16 g. The 174 g Clara BW also uses a 6-inch screen. Kobo Clara Colour keeps the same weight and screen size but adds color for covers, illustrations and comics. PocketBook Verse Pro is a worthwhile international alternative, although its specifications and availability should be checked for your region.
Compact e-reader shortlist
A 6-inch screen is the practical compact baseline: large enough for normal novels while keeping the device short and narrow enough for many coat, jacket and larger trouser pockets. The table separates published specifications from subjective comfort judgments. No independent laboratory test establishes a universally best grip, so one-handed suitability depends on hand size, case choice, reading position and tolerance for touch controls.

What makes an e-reader genuinely pocketable?
Screen size is only the starting point
All four candidates use a 6-inch reading area. That size keeps line lengths familiar for novels without the footprint of a 7-inch reader. A 7-inch model such as the Kindle Paperwhite provides more text per page, but the larger body gives up some pocketability and is less convenient to balance in one hand.
#1 Best Overall
- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Measure the body, not just the screen
Overall height, width and thickness determine whether a reader disappears into a pocket. The 2024 Kindle is the shortest and lightest option in this group at 157.8 × 108.6 × 8.0 mm and 158 g. The Verse Pro is 7.6 mm thick but weighs 182 g, showing why thickness alone does not predict comfort. The Clara Colour is 9.2 mm thick and 174 g. Kobo does not state Clara BW’s dimensions in the supplied product facts, so do not assume its external size is identical to the color model.
Account for a case and your grip
Published weights normally describe the reader itself. A protective cover adds thickness and mass, and a folio that folds behind the device can change the balance in one hand. If you intend to carry the reader in a trouser pocket, check the combined dimensions of the reader and chosen cover rather than relying on the bare-device figure. A textured rear surface or a case with a raised edge can also reduce the force needed to hold a smooth device, but the ideal texture is personal.
Amazon Kindle (2024): the smallest mainstream choice
Why it wins on portability
The 2024 entry-level Kindle weighs 158 g and measures 157.8 × 108.6 × 8.0 mm. That makes it the lightest researched mainstream option here. Amazon’s own press description says the reader is small enough to fit in a hand or a back pocket. For a reader who carries a device every day, the 16 g saving over the 174 g Kobo models is noticeable when the reader is held for long periods, even though comfort still depends on hand position and case weight.

The 6-inch, 300 ppi display is a monochrome E Ink panel suited to text. The 16 GB capacity leaves room for a large personal library; the useful amount of free space is lower after system software, and books with large images or audiobooks consume more storage than plain text. Amazon claims up to six weeks of battery life under its stated usage conditions. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed interval: reading frequency, front-light level, wireless use and other settings change the result.
Where it fits best
Choose this Kindle when minimum mass, a small body and direct access to the Kindle Store are your priorities. It is also the straightforward pick for someone already using Kindle purchases and synchronization. The current Kindle range is touchscreen-focused, so a buyer who specifically wants physical page-turn controls should investigate other models rather than expecting buttons on this entry-level device.

Trade-offs to check before buying
- Waterproofing is not established in the supplied Kindle specifications; do not treat it as a poolside or bath-time reader without confirming the exact product listing.
- Touch navigation requires a deliberate tap or swipe. Readers who frequently change pages while wearing gloves, holding a handle or using a single fingertip may prefer hardware controls on a different model.
- Amazon’s battery figure is conditional and should be compared only with other manufacturers’ figures on the same basis.
Kobo Clara BW: the balanced waterproof option
What sets it apart
The Clara BW combines a 6-inch glare-free E Ink Carta 1300 HD display with waterproof protection, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C. At 174 g, it is 16 g heavier than the 2024 Kindle but remains firmly in the compact class. For many readers, that modest weight increase is a reasonable exchange for water resistance and Kobo’s ecosystem.
Who should choose it
Clara BW is the strongest fit for text-first readers who read near water, travel often or prefer Kobo’s storefront and library-borrowing options. Its monochrome screen keeps the visual treatment simple for novels and long-form articles. Kobo’s glare-free E Ink specification addresses reflections from room lights and windows, although front-light comfort still varies with brightness and ambient lighting.
Controls and hand comfort
Selected Kobo readers offer physical page-turn buttons, but button availability is model-specific; confirm the exact Clara BW listing rather than assuming every Kobo reader has them. With a touchscreen model, a case that creates a small rear grip can make repeated swipes easier. Because no independent comfort test establishes a universal grip winner, readers with small hands should try the bare device or buy from a retailer with a practical return policy.
Kobo Clara Colour: compact reading with color
What the color screen changes
Clara Colour uses a 6-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 display in a 112 × 160 × 9.2 mm, 174 g body. Color is useful for illustrated books, graphic novels, comics, maps, diagrams and seeing book covers in a library view. It is not automatically an upgrade for a reader whose library is almost entirely black-and-white novels: the color capability adds value only when you regularly view color content.
Portability
The body weighs the same as Clara BW, so it remains a one-handed, pocket-oriented design. At 9.2 mm, it is thicker than the 2024 Kindle’s 8.0 mm body. That difference can matter in a tight pocket, especially after adding a cover. Compare the complete carried package, not just the screen technology.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.

- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
When monochrome is the better decision
Choose a monochrome reader if your priority is the simplest text-focused experience and you do not need color illustrations. Clara Colour makes sense when color is central to what you read; otherwise the lighter Kindle or the waterproof Clara BW may fit the brief more directly.

PocketBook Verse Pro: an international waterproof alternative
A secondary specification reference lists the Verse Pro at 108 × 156 × 7.6 mm and 182 g, with a 6-inch display, IPX8 waterproofing, SMARTlight, Bluetooth and audio support. Those figures make it slightly heavier than both Kobo models despite its slim listed thickness. SMARTlight is relevant to readers who want a warmer front-light setting at night, while Bluetooth and audio support broaden its use beyond silent page reading.
Treat the Verse Pro as an international option rather than a universally available recommendation. The cited specifications are not from a manufacturer page, and storefronts, languages, warranty coverage, library integration and exact model names vary by country. Verify the regional product page, IPX8 claim, storage, charging port and return terms before ordering.
One-handed ergonomics: how to judge comfort without a lab score
Weight and leverage
Lower weight reduces the downward pull on your fingers, but balance matters as much as the number on a scale. Hold the reader at its normal reading angle for several minutes, then repeat with the case attached. A device that feels effortless for a short checkout demonstration can become tiring when held at the bottom edge for a full chapter.
Rear grip and edge shape
A lightly textured back or a cover with a hand strap can stop small movements that lead to a tighter grip. Avoid a case that makes the narrow device so thick that your fingers cannot wrap around it securely. Check that the cover does not obscure the USB-C port or make it difficult to wake the reader.
Rank #4
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
Touch gestures and page-turn controls
Touchscreen readers allow page turns with taps or swipes, but the required finger movement can be awkward when the other hand is occupied. Some Kobo models elsewhere in the range provide physical page-turn buttons; the current Kindle range is touchscreen-focused. If buttons are essential, verify their presence on the exact model and regional edition before purchase.
Left- and right-handed use
Test both orientations. A reader that places the comfortable tap zone or a button on one side may feel natural in one hand and require a stretch in the other. Many readers rotate the device or use a case grip to compensate, but no single layout suits every hand size.
Display, light and reading conditions
Monochrome versus color E Ink
Monochrome E Ink is the natural match for novels and other text-heavy books. The Kindle’s published 300 ppi specification gives it a high-density text display. Clara BW uses E Ink Carta 1300 HD, while Clara Colour uses E Ink Kaleido 3 for color content. A color display is most defensible when the books themselves contain meaningful illustrations or comics; it is not a reason by itself to accept a larger or heavier device.
Glare and front-light settings
Clara BW is explicitly described as glare-free. Verse Pro’s SMARTlight is designed for adjustable lighting, including warmer evening illumination. The supplied Kindle facts establish its display resolution but do not provide a warm-light specification. Keep the front light as low as comfortably readable in a dark room, and remember that a bright room may require a different setting than a bedroom.
Water resistance, ports and everyday durability
Waterproof protection is a stated Clara BW feature, and Verse Pro’s secondary specification lists an IPX8 rating. Those claims are useful for accidental splashes and wet environments, but they do not remove the need to follow the manufacturer’s depth, duration and fresh-water conditions. Do not infer waterproofing for the 2024 Kindle from its USB-C port or compact design; confirm an explicit rating before exposing it to water. For any model, close port covers if the design uses them, dry the reader before charging and check the regional warranty language.
Best Value
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Ecosystem, files and library use
Storefront choice
The 2024 Kindle is the clearest choice for readers invested in the Kindle Store. Clara BW and Clara Colour are Kobo devices, so Kobo’s storefront and associated reading services are the relevant ecosystem. Verse Pro belongs to PocketBook’s ecosystem. Storefront catalogs, borrowing support, prices and supported services depend on country, so verify that the books and library systems you use are available in your region.
File flexibility
Ecosystem convenience and file-format flexibility are separate decisions. Before buying, list the formats already in your library, whether you need to transfer files from a computer, and whether you expect to read library loans, comics or PDFs. The supplied specifications do not establish a complete format matrix for these models, so consult the exact regional support pages for a definitive answer instead of assuming that every e-reader handles every file identically.
Storage for text, comics and audio
The Kindle’s 16 GB capacity is stated. Storage figures for Clara BW, Clara Colour and Verse Pro are not established in the supplied product facts. Plain novels use little space compared with image-heavy comics, manga or audiobooks. If those are central to your use, verify usable capacity and whether audio playback is supported on the exact model; Verse Pro is the only candidate here with audio support explicitly listed.

Battery expectations
Amazon’s “up to six weeks” claim for the 2024 Kindle applies under Amazon’s stated usage conditions. It is not a promise that every reader will charge only once every six weeks. Wireless syncing, a brighter light, frequent store browsing, audio and intensive reading shorten runtime. Comparable battery figures for the Kobo and PocketBook models are not stated in the supplied specifications, so do not rank them by an invented number. For travel, carry a USB-C cable and charge before leaving rather than planning around the maximum claim.
Which compact reader should you buy?
Pick the 2024 Kindle when…
- Every gram and millimeter matters.
- You want the smallest and lightest mainstream option in this group.
- You already buy books through the Kindle Store.
- A monochrome 6-inch, 300 ppi display meets your needs.
Pick Kobo Clara BW when…
- You want a waterproof 6-inch reader.
- You prefer Kobo’s storefront or library ecosystem.
- You read mostly novels and want a glare-free monochrome display.
- Adding 16 g compared with the Kindle is acceptable for the extra protection.
Pick Kobo Clara Colour when…
- Color covers, illustrations, comics or diagrams are a regular part of reading.
- You want a 6-inch, 174 g device rather than a larger color reader.
- You accept a 9.2 mm body and do not need monochrome-only simplicity.
Pick PocketBook Verse Pro when…
- You are buying in a market where the model and warranty are officially available.
- IPX8 protection, SMARTlight, Bluetooth or audio support are priorities.
- You have verified the regional specifications because the cited figures come from a secondary source.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Measure your usual pocket. Compare its opening and depth with the reader’s bare dimensions, then add the thickness of the case.
- Set a carried-weight limit. Use 158 g for the Kindle, 174 g for either Clara model and 182 g for Verse Pro as the device-only reference points.
- Choose the ecosystem first. Confirm that your preferred store, library service and existing books work in the regional edition.
- Decide whether color is essential. If not, a monochrome model avoids paying for a feature you will rarely use.
- Confirm water protection in writing. Look for the exact model’s published rating; never infer it from a charging port or another model in the same family.
- Check controls. Verify whether the exact reader has only touch navigation or includes physical page-turn buttons.
- Check storage and audio needs. Confirm usable capacity if you read comics, manga or audiobooks, and verify Bluetooth or audio support where required.
- Test the grip. Hold the reader one-handed with the intended case for several minutes, trying both left and right hands and both portrait orientations.
- Review regional terms. Product names, availability, prices, storefront catalogs and warranty coverage change by country and over time.
Bottom line
The 2024 Amazon Kindle is the clear portability winner: 158 g, an 8.0 mm body and a compact 6-inch screen make it the easiest recommendation for pocket carry and one-handed reading. Kobo Clara BW is the better all-round alternative when waterproofing and Kobo’s ecosystem justify 16 g more. Clara Colour is the specialist choice for color content, while PocketBook Verse Pro belongs on an international shortlist only after its regional specification and availability are confirmed.
