For an inexpensive new pocket camera under $500, the Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 is a sensible starting point: it combines a small body with 5x optical zoom and rechargeable power. It is best suited to straightforward daylight snapshots, not demanding low-light photography. If you need a rugged camera, more zoom, or video-first controls, the right choice changes—and some alternatives are harder to verify as available under budget.

What can you realistically get for under $500?

A $500 budget can cover a basic new pocket compact, some rugged models, and select cameras aimed at travel zoom or video. It does not guarantee premium compact-camera image quality. The most important trade-off is often between a small sensor and convenience on one hand, and image quality in challenging light on the other.

Decide first whether “compact” means a camera that fits in a pocket. A DSLR, mirrorless camera, or bridge camera may also fall below $500, but it is a different size and handling proposition. RTINGS’ 2026 under-$500 camera comparison covers those broader categories as well as compact options.

Which compact camera fits your priorities?

Priority Candidate What to weigh
Low-cost everyday snapshots Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 Small-body convenience and 5x optical zoom versus small-sensor limits and digital stabilization.
Rough trips or water-adjacent use Kodak PIXPRO WPZ2 or a Pentax WG model Exact model’s operating limits, controls, sealing, warranty, and variant.
More optical reach Kodak PIXPRO AZ425/AZ528 or Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A Zoom range, stabilization, handling at long zoom, and whether the larger body still suits your idea of compact.
Video or vlogging Canon PowerShot V10 Video framing and audio workflow versus flexibility for still photos.
Screen-free shooting Camp Snap CS-PRO Whether its deliberately simple shooting workflow suits you.
Stronger image quality on a strict budget Used or discontinued compact, or a different camera type Condition, battery health, warranty, sensor size, lens, and total kit cost.

These candidates and use cases appear in the cited 2026 comparisons; the categories are a way to narrow the choice, not a claim that every model is currently available below $500.

  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
  • Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
  • Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life

Why the Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 is a practical low-cost pick

Camera Lookout’s 2026 compact-camera guide lists the FZ55 with a 16.35MP 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, 28–140mm-equivalent 5x optical zoom, digital image stabilization, Full HD 1080/30p video, a fixed 2.7-inch LCD, and a rechargeable battery. Camera Times’ 2026 guide gives a U.S. price snapshot of $139.99; Camera Lookout reports a typical range of about $140–160. Both are publisher-reported snapshots dated September 19, 2026, not guarantees of today’s price or stock.

The 5x optical zoom gives you real lens reach in a pocketable camera, while rechargeable power avoids reliance on disposable batteries. The small 1/2.3-inch sensor and digital stabilization are meaningful compromises: expect weaker results in dim scenes and less help against camera shake than optical stabilization can provide. It is also not the strongest fit for fast action or buyers seeking image quality comparable to a larger-sensor camera.

When to choose a different kind of compact

For rugged trips: verify the exact WPZ2 or WG model

The cited guides place the Kodak PIXPRO WPZ2 below $200 and list a 4x optical zoom lens covering 27–108mm equivalent. They describe it as a rugged or water-oriented candidate, but do not establish an exact waterproof depth, duration, or care limit. Before relying on any rugged compact underwater, check the manufacturer’s manual for the precise regional model and follow its operating and maintenance limits; “water-oriented” does not mean unrestricted immersion.

For more reach: compare zoom and handling

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A is listed by Camera Lookout’s beginner compact-camera guide with a 20.2MP 1/2.3-inch sensor, 12x optical zoom spanning 25–300mm equivalent, optical stabilization, and Full HD video. That guide reports a U.S. price snapshot of $379 dated September 19, 2026. Check the exact variant, seller, and current offer before treating it as an under-$500 option. Longer zoom can help frame distant subjects, but does not by itself make a camera better in dim light.

Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 5X Optical Zoom, Blue
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors

The Kodak PIXPRO AZ425 and AZ528 are also candidates if reach matters, but they are not necessarily pocket cameras. Compare their exact zoom range and stabilization, and make sure their size and handling fit your travel plans before choosing on zoom alone.

For video-first use: consider the PowerShot V10

The Canon PowerShot V10 appears in the 2026 compact-camera guides as a video or vlogging-oriented option. Choose this direction if video framing and audio workflow matter more than still-photo flexibility. The cited information does not establish a current U.S. price or a specific under-$500 listing, so confirm the complete offer before buying.

Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 5X Optical Zoom, Red
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging

For a screen-free workflow: consider the Camp Snap CS-PRO

The Camp Snap CS-PRO is another listed candidate, designed around deliberately simple, screen-free shooting. That may appeal if you want fewer on-camera review controls, but it is a poor fit if you depend on composing and checking each image on a display. Confirm current price and availability before treating it as a budget pick.

What about Panasonic’s compact zooms?

RTINGS’ 2026 comparison names the Panasonic LUMIX ZS80 as a compact point-and-shoot option, while noting it is discontinued and may be harder to find. A used or remaining-stock example could suit someone willing to check condition, battery health, warranty, and total cost; its inclusion in a guide does not establish a current new price below $500.

Digital Camera World’s cheap-camera guide discusses the Panasonic Lumix ZS99 as a compact alternative to the Canon SX740 HS, noting touchscreen and RAW shooting as differentiators. It does not establish that U.S. buyers can currently purchase the ZS99 for under $500, so treat it as a feature comparison rather than a confirmed budget pick. Regional model names and availability can differ.

How to check a camera before buying

  1. Confirm the size category. Check dimensions and decide whether you need a true pocket camera or can carry a larger bridge-style body.
  2. Match the lens to your subjects. Optical zoom extends framing without relying on digital enlargement; compare the equivalent focal-length range and consider whether you need wide-angle views or distant-subject reach.
  3. Check stabilization and video separately. Note whether stabilization is optical or digital, and verify the video resolution and frame rate if moving footage matters.
  4. Review durability claims at the model level. For water or rough conditions, read the manual for the exact variant and its operating limits rather than relying on a general rugged label.
  5. Verify the actual offer. Check the exact model suffix, seller, new or used condition, warranty, return terms, stock, and final price. For discontinued models, include battery condition and any needed accessories in the total.

Prices and stock can change quickly. The dated figures above are guide-reported U.S. snapshots, not live quotes; Canon’s U.S. PowerShot catalog is useful for checking the manufacturer’s current product lineup, but a catalog alone does not confirm a particular seller’s price or stock.
