Marshall Emberton II is the strongest match if you want a genuinely compact, stereo Bluetooth speaker with an amplifier-inspired look and one physical control knob. Tivoli Audio PAL BT is the better fit if your idea of retro includes a tuning dial, FM radio and analog-style operation; it is a mono radio-speaker hybrid rather than a like-for-like stereo alternative.
Both models can be operated without relying on a phone app. Their important differences are control layout, stereo versus mono output, wired and radio connections, environmental protection, size, weight and battery claims. The specifications below come from manufacturer product pages; no independent listening test or laboratory battery comparison was established, so this is a feature-and-use-case guide rather than a sound-quality ranking.

Choose Emberton II for stereo music and tougher outdoor use
Emberton II is the straightforward choice when “retro” means the visual language of a classic guitar amplifier but you still want a modern portable speaker. Its stereo design is the closer fit for music played from a phone, tablet or computer, while the IP67 rating gives it a clearly stated dust-and-water protection level. The single top control combines the everyday actions most people need, and a separate pairing button keeps Bluetooth setup independent from playback controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It is also the less complicated option if you do not need a physical radio tuner, an auxiliary cable or a headphone jack. Bluetooth is the only listed audio connection, so all sources must be wireless.
Choose PAL BT for radio, knobs and an analog ritual
PAL BT is aimed at a different kind of retro experience. Its dedicated source and tuning controls let you switch between Bluetooth and FM radio and adjust a station without opening an app. The auxiliary input accepts a wired source, and the headphone output is useful when you want private listening. Those connections make it more flexible as a small tabletop radio than Emberton II.
The trade-off is fundamental: PAL BT is mono. It should be selected because you value radio reception, tactile controls and the cabinet design, not because you expect the same stereo presentation as a conventional two-channel portable speaker.

Emberton II control layout
The top panel has two key controls: a multidirectional knob and a Bluetooth pairing button. Marshall says the knob can turn the speaker on or off, play or pause content, skip tracks and adjust volume. That means the common actions stay on the speaker itself rather than being hidden behind a touchscreen or app. The separate pairing button is used when connecting a new device.
The Marshall Bluetooth app is optional. The manufacturer says Emberton II works without it, so app installation is not a prerequisite for basic listening. If you prefer a minimal setup, charge the speaker, pair once and use the top controls thereafter.
PAL BT control layout
PAL BT uses three analog-style controls on the cabinet: one knob for power and source selection, one for volume and a larger dial for tuning. Bluetooth pairing is handled by a button on the back. This arrangement makes the selected source and station visible through the position of a physical control instead of a phone display.
Because the controls are separate, changing volume does not require moving a tuning dial, and selecting FM is a deliberate source change rather than an app menu choice. The same layout also means you need to learn which rear button starts Bluetooth pairing, especially if the speaker is placed close to a wall.

Portability, durability and placement
Emberton II: smaller footprint with a defined ingress rating
At 0.7 kg, Emberton II is light enough for a bag while retaining a solid, amplifier-like enclosure. Its IP67 rating is the only clearly codified protection claim in this comparison: the first digit addresses dust protection and the second addresses water resistance under the rating’s test conditions. An IP code is not a promise that every part of a speaker is indestructible, so keep ports closed as directed by the manual and avoid treating the rating as permission for deliberate submersion.
The manufacturer describes the textured silicone sleeve as recalling the vinyl covering used on classic amplifiers. That gives the speaker a retro appearance without requiring a large cabinet or exposed woodwork.
PAL BT: weather-resistant cabinet, but no stated IP code
Tivoli describes PAL BT as weather resistant, yet the reviewed product information does not show an IP rating. You therefore cannot translate that wording into a specific dust or water protection level. Use it in sheltered outdoor locations and keep the charging and audio connections protected from rain unless the manual for your exact revision says otherwise.
PAL BT weighs more than Emberton II and has a deeper radio-style body. That can make it feel planted on a kitchen counter or patio table, while Emberton II is easier to slip into a smaller bag. Neither size alone tells you how loud or clear a speaker will sound; cabinet volume, driver design and room placement also matter.

Connections and source flexibility
Wireless listening
Emberton II specifies Bluetooth 5.1. Pair a phone or computer with the speaker’s Bluetooth button, then use the control knob for playback and volume. Since no wired input is listed, a device without Bluetooth needs an external Bluetooth transmitter or a different speaker.
PAL BT also supports Bluetooth, but the reviewed pages do not state a Bluetooth version. Its rear pairing button performs the hardware step, while the front controls remain available for source and volume changes after pairing.
Radio and wired listening on PAL BT
FM reception is the feature that most clearly separates PAL BT from Emberton II. The tuning dial is intended for direct station selection, so it can serve as a standalone radio even when no phone is connected. The auxiliary input supports a wired player, and the headphone output provides a private-listening path that neither of the documented Emberton II connections provides.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
These additions make PAL BT a better bedside, kitchen or workshop radio-speaker. They also add more controls and more cables to manage. If your listening is almost entirely streamed music, those extras may not justify choosing the mono model.

Battery claims and charging
What Emberton II’s figures mean
Marshall claims more than 30 hours of playback for Emberton II and says a 20-minute charge can provide four hours of playback. These are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. Actual runtime varies with volume, source, temperature, battery age and other operating conditions, so use the figures to understand the intended endurance class rather than as a guaranteed runtime.
Why PAL BT needs model verification
Tivoli’s official PAL BT information is internally inconsistent. The introductory section of one detailed page says 14-plus hours, the technical specification lists 10 hours, and another official PAL BT page states a minimum of 16 hours. The discrepancy may reflect different generations, regional versions or page maintenance. Do not select a charger or plan a trip around one number until the model identifier and manual for your unit are confirmed.
Charging PAL BT safely
Tivoli’s FAQ says to use a USB-C Power Delivery-compatible charger delivering at least 2.5 W and no more than 20 W, and identifies 20 W at 9 V as the fastest charging arrangement. Confirm those limits against the manual for the exact PAL BT revision before buying a replacement charger. A charger that physically fits is not automatically electrically appropriate.
Buying decision framework
- Decide whether stereo is essential. If you want left-right separation for music, Emberton II is the documented stereo option. PAL BT is mono by design.
- List the sources you actually use. Choose PAL BT if FM, an auxiliary cable or headphones are important. Choose Emberton II if Bluetooth streaming covers your needs.
- Choose your control style. Emberton II concentrates functions in one multidirectional knob. PAL BT gives each task its own analog-style control and adds a tuning dial.
- Match protection to placement. Emberton II has an IP67 rating. PAL BT is described as weather resistant without a published IP code in the reviewed material; plan for more shelter.
- Check the exact revision and price. Emberton II’s cited US price was $159.99 when the page was accessed, not a guaranteed current price. PAL BT pricing was not stated here, and its battery pages conflict, so verify both price and model before ordering.
Setup instructions
Set up Emberton II without the app
- Charge the speaker using the supplied charging equipment and close any port cover before moving it outdoors.
- Turn the speaker on with the multidirectional control knob.
- Press the Bluetooth pairing button, then open Bluetooth settings on your phone or computer and select Emberton II.
- Start playback on the source device. Use the knob for play/pause, track changes and volume instead of reaching for the phone.
- Install the Marshall app only if you want its optional features; basic operation does not require it.
Set up PAL BT for Bluetooth
- Confirm the model revision and charging requirements in the manual before connecting a USB-C PD charger.
- Use the power/source knob to turn the speaker on and select Bluetooth.
- Press the pairing button on the rear panel, then choose PAL BT in your phone or computer’s Bluetooth menu.
- Adjust listening level with the volume knob. Return to the source knob when you want FM or another input.
Use PAL BT as an FM radio
- Turn the power/source knob to the FM position.
- Rotate the tuning dial until the desired station is received.
- Set the listening level with the separate volume knob; do not use the tuning control for volume changes.
- If reception is weak, move the speaker away from large metal objects and try a different position before assuming the radio is defective.
Common pitfalls
- Expecting PAL BT to behave like a stereo speaker: its mono output is a design characteristic, not a pairing fault.
- Treating “weather resistant” as an IP rating: no IP code was shown for PAL BT in the reviewed text, so its protection cannot be compared numerically with IP67.
- Quoting one PAL BT battery number: official pages list 10 hours, 14-plus hours and a minimum of 16 hours. Verify the revision and manual.
- Assuming Emberton II accepts a cable: no wired audio connection is listed. Use Bluetooth or select a model with an auxiliary input.
- Buying a generic high-power charger for PAL BT: Tivoli’s stated range is at least 2.5 W and no more than 20 W, with 20 W/9 V identified as fastest; confirm your revision first.
- Confusing control convenience with sound-quality proof: physical knobs improve operation, but the available specifications do not establish an independent winner for sound.
Details that matter in daily use
How the size difference affects carrying
The published figures put Emberton II at 160 × 68 × 76 mm and 0.7 kg, compared with PAL BT at 6 × 3.6 × 4.5 inches and 2 lb. Emberton II is therefore the slimmer, lighter object for a backpack, desk shelf or short move between rooms. PAL BT’s larger, deeper cabinet and extra half-pound of published weight are less convenient for constant carrying but can be welcome on a fixed kitchen, bedside or patio surface.
Neither product should be chosen solely from dimensions. Placement affects how easily you can reach the controls: Emberton II’s controls are on top, while PAL BT’s Bluetooth pairing button is on the rear. Leave enough clearance around PAL BT to reach that button when pairing a new device.
When physical controls are more useful than an app
Both designs keep basic operation on the cabinet. Emberton II puts power, play/pause, track skipping and volume on one multidirectional knob. PAL BT separates power/source, volume and tuning into dedicated controls. The choice is about the number of actions you want to perform without looking at a screen: one consolidated control on Marshall, or a more traditional control surface on Tivoli.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The Marshall app is optional, so buyers who avoid companion software can still use the speaker. PAL BT’s FM and auxiliary functions are inherently available from the hardware controls, which is useful when the speaker is used as a radio rather than as a phone accessory.
Understanding the value question
The only dated price observed for this comparison is $159.99 on Marshall’s US product page. That figure can change with promotions, region and stock, so check the current listing before treating it as a budget limit. A current PAL BT price was not established here. Compare the price you see with the features you will actually use: stereo Bluetooth and IP67 protection on Emberton II, or FM, auxiliary, headphone and analog controls on PAL BT.
Do not pay extra for a feature you will never use, but do not substitute a cheaper stereo speaker if the tuning dial and FM receiver are the reason you are shopping for PAL BT. These products solve different problems even though both have retro styling and Bluetooth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which is better for common scenarios?
- Streaming playlists outdoors: Emberton II has the documented stereo output, Bluetooth 5.1 and IP67 rating. Keep the charging port closed and follow the manual’s care instructions.
- Listening to FM news in the kitchen: PAL BT is the natural fit because it has a tuning dial and does not require a phone connection for radio.
- Connecting an older wired player: PAL BT has the listed auxiliary input. Emberton II has no wired audio connection listed.
- Private listening: PAL BT’s headphone output is the only documented headphone connection in this comparison.
- Minimal controls: Emberton II’s single multidirectional knob covers the main playback actions, whereas PAL BT offers more dedicated knobs to learn.
- Buying for uncertain outdoor weather: Emberton II has a stated IP67 code. PAL BT’s weather-resistant description lacks an IP code in the reviewed information, so choose a sheltered location unless the exact manual says otherwise.
Common questions
Before ordering, verify the exact model name, regional listing and included charging equipment. PAL BT pages show different battery figures, and the cited Emberton II price is only a snapshot.
Bottom line
For most people seeking a compact retro-looking Bluetooth speaker, Emberton II is the cleaner match: stereo output, a single comprehensive physical control, Bluetooth 5.1, a stated IP67 rating and a long manufacturer-claimed runtime. Select PAL BT when the point of buying retro is the experience of operating a small radio—separate knobs, a tuning dial, FM reception, auxiliary input and headphone output—and accept that it is mono and that its published battery figures require model-specific verification.
