The best new Commander cards from The Hobbit MTG set depend on the deck you want to build: Thranduil is an Elf graveyard toolbox, Thorin powers up Dwarves, Smaug the Impenetrable turns noncombat damage into Treasures, Beorn rewards Bear combat, and The Great Goblin pays off counters and creature deaths. These are commander build-arounds, not a universal ranking of the best cards for every deck’s 99.
What “best” means for Commander
For this list, “best” means a new legend with a distinctive Commander engine and a clear deck-building plan. It does not mean highest win rate: no win-rate or matchup statistics are established here. A third-party ranking published by TCG Spikes on August 25, 2026, used a saved EDHREC deck-adoption snapshot to order new eligible HOB and HOC commanders; it is a popularity signal, not an official Wizards ranking or a measure of how well each card performs in the 99. That snapshot reported 6,062 decks for Thranduil, 4,340 for Thorin, 4,248 for Smaug the Impenetrable, 3,721 for Beorn, and 3,719 for The Great Goblin. Color identity and mana value matter when comparing commanders, as do the support they need and how exposed their engines are to removal. Verify a card’s current text, color identity, mana value, and legality in the official card image gallery before building; the recommendations below focus on the reported play patterns rather than implying that adoption alone proves a card belongs in every deck.
Five standout Hobbit commanders
Thranduil, the Elvenking: an Elf graveyard toolbox
Thranduil can use the activated abilities of Elf cards in its controller’s graveyard. When another legendary Elf enters under your control, Thranduil draws two cards, then discards one. The combination rewards a deck with both useful Elf abilities to access from the graveyard and enough legendary Elves to trigger the draw-and-discard effect.

- What can go wrong: Graveyard exile removes the ability toolbox. Thranduil does not waive the borrowed ability’s activation cost or restrictions.
Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk: Dwarf tokens, Treasures, and combat power
Whenever Thorin or another Dwarf enters under your control, you create a Treasure token. Other Dwarves you control get +1/+0 for each artifact token you control. Dwarf tokens therefore help build the board and can contribute to both the Treasure engine and the power bonus.
- Best fit: A Dwarf-focused deck that can make several Dwarves and artifact tokens.
- What it provides: Treasure for mana and a scalable attack bonus for other Dwarves.
- What can go wrong: Spending Treasures develops mana but lowers the power bonus. The boost adds no toughness, does not apply to Thorin, and does not protect a wide board from sweepers.
Smaug the Impenetrable: turn self-inflicted damage into Treasures
Smaug the Impenetrable is reported to have flying, indestructible, and haste, and to create that many Treasures whenever noncombat damage is dealt to it. Its engine invites effects that can deal damage to your own commander, converting a defensive resource or a deliberate setup into mana. Its reported seven-mana starting cost makes ramp important.

- Best fit: A deck that can produce noncombat damage to Smaug and wants to turn that damage into mana.
- What it provides: Treasure generation from damage dealt to the commander.
- What can go wrong: Indestructible does not stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or toughness reduction. Prevented damage does not produce the damage-based Treasure trigger.
Beorn the Fierce: Bears and combat-based card draw
Beorn gives other Bears +2/+2. At the beginning of combat on your turn, you put a trample counter on a creature, and that creature becomes a Bear in addition to its other types. If you control three or more Bears, you draw two cards. Turning a creature into a Bear can help reach the threshold, but the draw still requires at least three Bears when the ability resolves.

- Best fit: A Bear tribal deck with enough creatures to maintain the threshold.
- What it provides: A substantial boost for other Bears, trample access, and a recurring draw opportunity.
- What can go wrong: The card draw depends on keeping three Bears through resolution; opponents can disrupt the board before that check.
The Great Goblin: counter-triggered damage and temporary card access
When one or more counters are put on a Goblin, Orc, or Army you control, The Great Goblin deals 2 damage to a target opponent. When another such creature dies, you exile the top card of your library and may play it through the end of your next turn. The reported rules explanation says placing several counters at once still produces one trigger, not a separate trigger for each counter.

- Best fit: A Goblin, Orc, or Army strategy that can place counters and expects creatures to die.
- What it provides: A targeted damage trigger and short-lived access to an extra card.
- What can go wrong: The damage trigger targets one opponent, and the exiled card’s play window expires at the end of your next turn.
How to choose between the five

Choose by the pieces you already want to play. Thranduil and The Great Goblin need particular creature types and trigger opportunities; Thorin needs Dwarves and a decision about whether to keep Treasures for power or spend them for mana. Smaug asks for ways to deal noncombat damage to itself, while Beorn asks for a board that can preserve its Bear count. None of the five is an automatic upgrade for an unrelated deck simply because it appeared near the top of an adoption ranking.
Other commanders worth considering
The same dated snapshot also highlighted Smaug the Magnificent, Gandalf, Party Guest, Bard, King of Dale, Smaug, Wicked Worm, and Radagast of Rhosgobel. Their reported engines include a Treasure-hoard attack payoff, a window for a legendary Wizard to enable a free spell, token and draw replacement effects, Treasure-funded card draw, and discounted flash creatures. Each is a possible build-around, but those different setup demands make them alternatives to evaluate against a deck’s plan, not interchangeable additions to the five above. TCG Spikes’ ranking

Set codes, Commander legality, and new mechanics
Wizards identifies the main set as HOB and its Eternal-legal component as HOC. Wizards’ release notes say HOB cards are permitted in Commander, and new HOC cards are permitted in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage; previously printed HOC cards are legal in any format where a card with the same name is permitted. Can a booster pack get you a specific commander?
No. A Play Booster contains randomized HOB cards and does not guarantee any named card. If you want one of these commanders, an individual single is the direct route; a booster is for opening randomized cards or drafting, not reliably finding a specific legend. Wizards lists Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, Gift Bundles, Draft Night, and Scene Boxes as products, but its listed MSRPs are historical official list prices rather than current retailer prices or secondary-market values.
