RimWorld is the closest match if diplomacy is your priority. It combines a settlement-management loop with explicit faction relations, trade, quests and peace talks. For a more medieval presentation, Manor Lords is the strongest historical alternative, while Songs of Syx is better for low-fantasy statecraft at city-state and empire scale. Dwarf Fortress goes deepest on simulation, and Going Medieval remains the best fit for building a three-dimensional fortified settlement.
What Going Medieval does—and what its diplomacy leaves open
Going Medieval starts with three travelers rebuilding society after a plague in a Dark Age world reclaimed by wilderness. Its official Steam description centers on constructing and managing a castle settlement, shaping three-dimensional terrain, assigning settlers with individual skills and needs, researching and crafting medieval equipment, surviving raids, and using a moddable sandbox. That is a strong foundation for players who want to design a defensible settlement and watch a small group become a walled city.
Diplomacy is not presented as a headline system in that description. The game’s pressure comes primarily from settlement planning, production, survival and raids rather than from a clearly defined network of negotiating factions. The alternatives below are therefore not identical substitutes. They add more visible political interaction, or they create a world in which civilizations and relationships generate diplomatic consequences around your settlement.

The right choice depends on what you mean by “better diplomacy.” You may want named factions and peace negotiations, a large political map with vassals and nobles, a historically medieval atmosphere, or simply a deeper simulation of how societies collide. 1. RimWorld: the best overall diplomacy match
RimWorld is the safest recommendation when the question is specifically “Which colony sim has the best diplomacy?” Its official description calls it “A sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller” and explicitly includes diplomacy, interpersonal relationships, art, medicine, trade and other social systems. Unlike a settlement game where outside groups mainly arrive as attackers, RimWorld makes relations part of the normal colony loop.
What you can do with other factions
Passing ships and caravans create opportunities to trade instead of treating every visitor as a threat. Faction quests give your colony reasons to intervene in events beyond its walls. Peace talks let you pursue a negotiated outcome, while attacks on other factions make relations an active strategic choice rather than a background statistic. Prisoners can be recruited, turning a hostile encounter into a way to grow your population, and travel across a generated planet lets your decisions reach locations outside the home settlement.
These systems produce diplomacy that is concrete and actionable. You are not merely watching a political map change; you are deciding whether to accept a quest, open trade, attempt peace, recruit a prisoner or launch an expedition. The colony’s social problems and individual relationships also matter, so diplomatic events feed back into the people doing the work.

Where it differs from Going Medieval
The trade-off is setting. RimWorld is science fiction, not a medieval world, so its technology, factions and travel operate in a different imaginative space. It also focuses on an AI-driven colony story rather than on the specific visual language of a stone castle built into three-dimensional terrain. If your priority is emergent relationships and faction interaction, that difference is usually worthwhile. If you want medieval architecture and a post-plague settlement, it is a thematic departure.
Choose RimWorld if…
- You want diplomacy to be an explicit system with recognizable actions.
- You enjoy trade, quests, peace talks and faction decisions as much as construction.
- You want a colony whose relationships and personal stories shape strategic choices.
- You can accept science fiction in exchange for stronger diplomatic interaction.
2. Songs of Syx: the best low-fantasy empire politics
Songs of Syx is the strongest choice when Going Medieval feels too small. Its official description presents a low-fantasy city builder that grows from an insignificant village into a city-state and then an empire. The same page describes allies and vassals, kingdoms, traders, migrations and raiders, while warning that nobles can join your enemies. That combination makes politics inseparable from population growth and military power.
Why its diplomacy feels larger
In a small fortified colony, a single raid can define the year. In Songs of Syx, the strategic frame expands to relationships between states. Alliances and vassal arrangements give you tools besides direct conquest. Traders and migrating populations connect the economy and demographics to the wider political world. Raiders apply pressure from outside, while nobles create an internal political risk: powerful figures may defect or strengthen an enemy if your realm becomes unstable.

The scale is also unusual. The developer describes real-time battles simulating tens of thousands of citizens and soldiers. That does not make every diplomatic decision automatically better, but it changes what diplomacy is for. You are managing the consequences of state formation, mass armies and competing kingdoms rather than only keeping a handful of settlers alive.

Songs of Syx remains in Early Access on its cited page. The developer says it is playable for hundreds of hours while also noting that key features and polish are incomplete. Treat that as part of the purchase decision: the game already supports a substantial city-to-empire experience, but systems and presentation may continue to change.
It is also low fantasy rather than historical medieval simulation. Choose it for political scale and armies, not for a strictly authentic reconstruction of medieval life. The move from village to empire can be much broader than the compact, hands-on castle-building experience that defines Going Medieval.
Choose Songs of Syx if…
- You want allies, vassals and kingdoms to matter across a large political map.
- You are interested in city-state or empire management rather than only one settlement.
- You want mass battles and populations measured on a far larger scale.
- You are comfortable with Early Access and unfinished or changing features.
3. Dwarf Fortress: the deepest simulation
Dwarf Fortress is the recommendation for readers who value a living world more than a conventional diplomacy interface. Bay 12 Games describes it as a game to “Prepare for the deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that has ever been created.” Its official page highlights generated civilizations, personalities, creatures and cultures, along with a managed dwarf colony in that world.
Diplomacy as world context
The cited page does not foreground a diplomacy menu comparable to RimWorld’s peace talks or faction actions. Instead, diplomacy is best understood as part of a much wider simulation. Civilizations have histories and cultures; individuals have personalities; creatures and events can create chains of consequences that are not scripted around a simple relationship meter. Your fortress exists inside that context, and the world’s generated history can matter even when you are not issuing a formal diplomatic command.
This makes Dwarf Fortress a poor fit if you want a clear list of diplomatic actions and an easy-to-read political dashboard. It is an excellent fit if you want the surrounding world to feel causally rich, with social systems capable of producing stories that no designer wrote in advance. Failures, accidents and conflicts can become the memorable content of a fortress rather than problems to be neatly solved.

Scale, complexity and learning curve
The simulation is the attraction and the barrier. A conventional colony builder usually teaches you a repeating loop of gathering, building, staffing and defending. Dwarf Fortress asks you to understand a generated world, its populations and its many interacting systems. That complexity can produce more surprising outcomes than a focused castle builder, but it also demands more patience before you can predict why an event happened.
Choose it when “deepest simulation” is a more important phrase than “most accessible diplomacy.” It is a world-simulation choice with a fortress at its center, not a direct medieval replacement for Going Medieval’s three-dimensional construction tools.
Choose Dwarf Fortress if…
- You want generated civilizations, cultures, personalities and histories to shape play.
- You prefer emergent social consequences to a compact diplomacy screen.
- You are willing to accept a steep learning curve and unpredictable failures.
- You want the world around your settlement to be as important as the settlement itself.
4. Manor Lords: the best historical medieval atmosphere
Manor Lords is the closest thematic alternative when historical medieval presentation matters more than colony-personality storytelling. Slavic Magic describes it as a strategy game that lets you experience the life of a medieval lord. Its cited description focuses on growing a village into a city, managing production chains, using resources efficiently, laying out settlements according to trade routes and fighting battles. Steam also tags the game with Diplomacy.
Recommended Free Tools
What the diplomatic label does—and does not establish
The Diplomacy tag signals that political interaction is part of the game’s intended identity, but the cited official description emphasizes city building, trade and warfare more than negotiated relations. That makes Manor Lords a qualified recommendation for a diplomacy-first reader. It may satisfy you if diplomacy means managing neighboring interests while expanding a medieval domain; it is less certain as a replacement for a game built around explicit peace talks, faction quests and relationship actions.
Why it feels medieval
Manor Lords places the settlement itself at the center of the experience. Production chains connect resources to buildings and inhabitants, while trade-route-informed layouts make geography and logistics visible in the town plan. Expansion through conquest gives the settlement a strategic purpose beyond self-sufficiency. Those elements support the fantasy of ruling land and organizing a medieval economy, even when diplomatic negotiation is not the most prominent system in the cited description.
Early Access expectations
Manor Lords is labeled Early Access on its cited page. Expect the game’s systems and polish to remain under development, and recheck its current status before buying because availability and feature scope can change. The Early Access label matters especially for a comparison centered on diplomacy: a tagged or planned system may not yet have the breadth or consistency you expect from a finished grand-strategy game.

- You want a historical medieval setting rather than science fiction or low fantasy.
- You care most about settlement authenticity, production chains and regional expansion.
- You prefer conquest and logistics to character-driven colony drama.
- You accept Early Access and do not require diplomacy to be the dominant mechanic.
Explicit diplomacy versus emergent politics
The four alternatives sit on a spectrum rather than sharing one diplomacy model.
| Diplomacy model | What it means in play | Best match |
|---|---|---|
| Action-based diplomacy | You can pursue trade, quests, peace talks, recruitment and attacks through recognizable systems. | RimWorld |
| State-level politics | Alliances, vassals, kingdoms, migrations and noble loyalties shape a growing realm. | Songs of Syx |
| World-simulation context | Generated civilizations, cultures, personalities and histories create social consequences without diplomacy being the headline interface. | Dwarf Fortress |
| Strategic medieval relations | Diplomacy exists alongside settlement growth, trade and conquest, but the cited description stresses those other systems. | Manor Lords |
This distinction prevents a common mismatch. A player asking for “more diplomacy” may actually want one of three things: a button-driven negotiation system, a political map with multiple states, or a believable world that produces social consequences. RimWorld answers the first request, Songs of Syx the second, and Dwarf Fortress the third. Manor Lords is the setting-led option when the medieval atmosphere is non-negotiable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the games compare on the decisions that matter
Diplomacy depth
RimWorld leads because its official feature list names diplomacy and gives it several concrete forms. Songs of Syx follows with broader state politics involving allies, vassals and kingdoms. Dwarf Fortress offers the richest simulation context but not a clearly foregrounded diplomacy menu in the cited description. Manor Lords includes a Diplomacy tag, yet its official presentation gives more space to settlement systems and battles.
Setting
Going Medieval and Manor Lords are the medieval choices, but they are not interchangeable: Going Medieval uses a post-plague Dark Age premise and three-dimensional fortified construction, while Manor Lords presents the life of a medieval lord through settlement economics and warfare. Songs of Syx is low fantasy. RimWorld is science fiction. Dwarf Fortress builds a fantasy world through generation rather than aiming for a historical reconstruction.
Scale
Going Medieval is about turning a tiny group into a walled settlement. RimWorld keeps the colony central but allows travel across a generated planet. Dwarf Fortress places one fortress in a living world. Songs of Syx makes the largest jump, moving from village to city-state and empire, with battles simulating tens of thousands of citizens and soldiers. Manor Lords occupies the middle ground of village-to-city growth and territorial conquest.

RimWorld balances many systems with an AI storyteller and a readable colony loop. Dwarf Fortress is the most demanding because its generated world, cultures and personalities are central to play. Going Medieval remains the most direct choice for players who want to spend their attention on spatial construction and settlement defense.

Combat
Going Medieval uses raids as pressure on the settlement. RimWorld combines raids with faction decisions and travel. Songs of Syx makes warfare a state-scale concern. Dwarf Fortress can turn emergent events and failures into conflicts that reshape a fortress. Manor Lords puts conquest and medieval battles near the center of its pitch. If you want diplomacy without frequent military escalation, RimWorld offers the clearest mix of peaceful and hostile interactions.
A practical decision guide
- Choose RimWorld if your first requirement is explicit diplomacy and your second is colony storytelling. Its science-fiction setting is the main compromise.
- Choose Songs of Syx if you want the politics of kingdoms, vassals and nobles at city-state or empire scale. Its low-fantasy setting and Early Access status are the main compromises.
- Choose Dwarf Fortress if you want the most intricate simulation and can learn through unpredictable outcomes. Do not choose it expecting a simple diplomacy dashboard.
- Choose Manor Lords if historical medieval atmosphere, production chains and conquest matter more than character-level relationships. Treat the Early Access label and the less diplomacy-focused official description as important qualifications.
- Stay with Going Medieval if three-dimensional castle construction, settler needs, medieval research and crafting, raids and modding are the features you do not want to give up. Add another game only when a more explicit political system is worth changing the setting or scale.
What to expect when switching from Going Medieval
From three-dimensional building to political choices
Going Medieval trains you to think spatially: terrain, walls, rooms, production and defense. RimWorld and Dwarf Fortress shift more attention toward people, events and relationships. Songs of Syx shifts it toward populations, armies and the stability of a realm. Manor Lords keeps the medieval visual language but asks you to think in terms of production chains, trade routes and territorial expansion.
From raids to relationships
In Going Medieval, raids are a central external pressure. In RimWorld, an arriving faction can also be a trading partner, quest giver or subject of peace talks. In Songs of Syx, a neighbor may be an ally, vassal, kingdom or source of political danger through noble defection. Dwarf Fortress may not present the same actions as buttons; its generated societies and histories create context that can surface through events. Manor Lords combines relations with trade and conquest, but the cited description does not establish diplomacy as its dominant loop.
From one settlement to a wider world
Going Medieval’s fantasy is the transformation of a few survivors into a walled city. The alternatives broaden the frame in different ways: RimWorld lets colonists travel across a generated planet, Songs of Syx extends the settlement into an empire, Dwarf Fortress embeds a fortress in a generated world, and Manor Lords connects a growing town to regional resources and battles.
Early Access and changing feature sets
Two recommendations require a specific caution. Songs of Syx and Manor Lords are labeled Early Access on their cited pages. The developer of Songs of Syx says it can be played for hundreds of hours while key features and polish remain incomplete. Manor Lords’ Early Access label likewise means its systems and presentation can change. Check the current store-page status and feature notes before purchase rather than treating this comparison as a permanent statement about either game.
Prices, review counts, bundles and discounts are deliberately not used here because they change frequently and do not determine which diplomacy model fits you. The durable distinctions are the systems: explicit faction actions in RimWorld, empire politics in Songs of Syx, generated social depth in Dwarf Fortress, historical settlement strategy in Manor Lords, and three-dimensional fortified construction in Going Medieval.
Final recommendation
Start with RimWorld if “better diplomacy” is the decisive phrase. It is the only option in this group whose cited official description directly foregrounds diplomacy alongside trade, quests, peace talks and faction conflict. Pick Songs of Syx for the biggest political scale, Dwarf Fortress for the deepest world simulation, and Manor Lords for the most convincing historical medieval atmosphere. Keep Going Medieval as your baseline when the pleasure comes from carving a defensible 3D settlement out of a dangerous post-plague landscape.
