Best overall for most groups: Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition combines a modern interface, conventional economy, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Choose StarCraft II if your group wants to try a dedicated co-op mode at little or no upfront cost, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for authored historical campaigns, Northgard for slower territory and resource planning, or Halo Wars 2 if everyone is already invested in Halo.
Quick comparison
These games do not offer identical kinds of cooperation. Some provide authored missions designed for two players; others are primarily shared skirmishes against computer opponents or team matches. The table shows what is established for each recommendation and flags details that vary by platform, edition or current service availability.
| Game | Best fit | Co-op form | Pace and micro | Economy and systems | Cross-platform status | Entry cost | Persistent co-op progression |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| StarCraft II | Groups testing co-op at low cost | Dedicated Co-op mode plus other multiplayer options | Fast; high unit-control demand | Streamlined economy, timing and army control | Not stated in the cited material | Large parts of single-player and multiplayer are free, according to Blizzard | Not stated |
| Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition | Historical campaigns and classic base building | Co-Op Campaign mode with historical scenarios and battles | Moderate; less frantic than StarCraft II | Detailed classic economy and technology progression | Not stated in the cited material | Not stated; edition and platform pricing change | Not stated |
| Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition | Modern all-round play and mixed-platform groups | Online co-op, co-op missions and AI or team modes | Moderate, with room for learning | Conventional food, wood, gold and stone economy | Steam identifies cross-platform multiplayer | Not stated; check the current store or subscription catalog | Not stated |
| Northgard | Slower, systems-focused planning | Cooperative or team skirmish play | Deliberate; seasonal preparation matters | Territory expansion, resources, weather and clan systems | Not stated in the cited material | Not stated; varies by platform | Not stated |
| Halo Wars 2 | Console-friendly groups and Halo fans | Online co-op strategy modes listed by Microsoft | Accessible real-time controls, with battles built around Halo units | Not stated in the cited material | Verify current platform support before a session | Check current store and subscription requirements | Not stated |
“Not stated” does not mean a feature is absent; it means the available product information does not establish it reliably enough to promise. Prices, bundles, expansions, subscription inclusion and platform support can change, so check the current listing for the edition every friend will use.

Why it suits a new group
Blizzard describes StarCraft II as offering “social and collaborative Co-op.” Large portions of its single-player and multiplayer content are free to play, making it the simplest way for a group to test whether everyone enjoys real-time strategy before buying several copies.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is tempo. Compared with the Age of Empires games, StarCraft II generally asks players to make decisions faster and control individual units more precisely. A new player can be overwhelmed if experienced friends issue every command for them, so agree on a simple division of responsibility: one person can focus on expanding the base and economy while the other handles scouting and the first defensive response.
What cooperation feels like
The dedicated Co-op mode is built around two players working through missions with commander-specific armies and objectives. You are not merely sharing a map; you must coordinate attack timing, defensive coverage and which player answers special threats. Other multiplayer modes can support team play, but they should not be described as a full cooperative story campaign.
Best first session
- Install the same current game client and make sure every player can sign in before the scheduled session.
- Start with the dedicated Co-op mode rather than a competitive ladder match.
- Choose complementary commanders or roles, then decide who will watch each side of the map.
- Use the first mission to practise worker production, supply management and rally points instead of chasing an optimal build order.
- After one successful mission, try a second difficulty only if both players understood why the first plan worked.
Pick StarCraft II when free access and a purpose-built co-op mode matter more than a relaxed pace or historical setting.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition: the historical-campaign choice
Why it suits campaign players
World’s Edge documents co-op campaigns and historical battles in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. You reach them through the multiplayer lobby’s Co-Op Campaign mode. This is the strongest choice when your group wants authored scenarios with historical framing rather than an endlessly repeatable competitive ladder.
The game’s classic structure gives each player a substantial economy to manage: gather resources, advance through ages, establish production buildings and keep an army supplied. That creates natural teamwork. One player can stabilize the home economy while the other protects a forward position, but both must understand the shared scenario objective. A player who builds a large army without enough farms, wood or gold can leave the entire team unable to replace losses.
Campaign versus ordinary team play
Use the lobby’s Co-Op Campaign option when you want the authored historical experience. A regular team skirmish against AI is a different activity: it gives you a map and victory condition, but not necessarily the narrative events or bespoke objectives of a campaign mission. Tell new players which mode you are launching so nobody expects a story scenario from a standard skirmish.

How to introduce newcomers
- Give each player a clear starting job, such as early farms and houses, scouting, or walling a vulnerable approach.
- Agree on one shared attack window instead of sending small armies piecemeal.
- Keep a reserve of the key resource needed to replace your main units; campaign objectives often punish an all-in attack that cannot be rebuilt.
- Pause between missions to explain the objective text and map landmarks, not just the unit counters.
Choose this edition when the group values historical scenarios and classic base-building more than the newest interface or broad cross-platform assurances.

Why it is the safest general recommendation
The Steam listing identifies Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition as an RTS with online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. World’s Edge has also announced two-player co-op Crucible missions with difficulty scaled for co-op. Together, those details make it the most balanced recommendation for a mixed group that wants a contemporary interface, a familiar economy and the best-documented chance of playing across PC platforms.
The game follows a conventional resource-and-age structure, so players coming from other base-building strategy games can understand the basic loop quickly: collect resources, choose technologies, build production, scout the opponent and coordinate an attack. It still has enough faction variation and map pressure to reward planning, but it is less of a pure reflex test than StarCraft II.
What to verify before inviting everyone
- Confirm that every friend owns or can access the same edition or an eligible subscription version.
- Check the current cross-platform rules for the platforms being mixed; “cross-platform multiplayer” is a product-level description, while specific updates or account requirements can change.
- Install the same game update and agree whether you are launching Crucible co-op, an AI skirmish or a competitive team match.
- Check whether any desired civilization, mission or expansion requires additional content.
Using Crucible missions as a learning path
Crucible missions are described as supporting solo and two-player co-op, with difficulty scaled for co-op. Start with the two-player setting and assign one player to economy and reinforcement production while the other scouts and handles the first engagement. Once both players can explain the mission objective and resource bottleneck, increase the challenge rather than adding unnecessary build-order complexity.
Select Age of Empires IV when your friends use different PC platforms or when you want one game that can cover guided co-op missions, AI practice and ordinary team matches.

Northgard: the slower, systems-focused option
Why its pace is different
Northgard is a Viking-themed RTS built around territory expansion, resource management, seasonal weather preparation and skirmish play. Its pressure comes from maintaining a viable settlement through changing seasons and claiming useful territory, not from issuing the highest number of commands every second.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That makes it a good fit for friends who enjoy discussing a plan, watching an economy develop and deciding which territory is safe to claim next. Winter preparation is a shared concern: an expansion that looks profitable in summer can become a food or defensive liability when the season changes. The group has to coordinate who develops which zone and when to stop expanding.
How to play cooperatively
- Before the match, decide whether one player will prioritize food and civilian stability while the other pursues military territory.
- Share information about nearby resources and hostile zones; a player who expands without telling the team can create a defensive gap.
- Prepare for the next season before spending all resources on a new zone or army.
- Set a common victory plan, because territory, economy and military objectives can pull the group in different directions.
Choose Northgard when your group prefers deliberate decisions and economic systems over constant high-speed battles. It is less suitable for friends who specifically want a cinematic, mission-by-mission co-op campaign.
Halo Wars 2: a console-friendly alternative
When it makes sense
Microsoft’s current PC strategy catalog lists Halo Wars 2 among its online co-op strategy games. It is therefore a sensible alternative for a group already invested in the Halo setting or for players who prefer a strategy game designed with console controls in mind.
The available product information does not establish a universal current player limit, cross-platform arrangement, price, subscription inclusion or expansion requirement. Verify those details for your exact platform before scheduling a session. A game appearing in a catalog does not guarantee that every console, PC storefront or subscription tier can join the same lobby.
Pre-session checklist
- Confirm the supported platforms and whether your friends need the same account service.
- Check active online-service and subscription requirements for each console.
- Install the same update and test that every player can reach the multiplayer menu.
- Decide whether you want co-op missions, AI battles or team-versus-team play; those modes provide different experiences.
Pick Halo Wars 2 for its setting and controller-friendly approach, not because the available information proves it is the broadest cross-platform option.
Which game is best for your group?
If some friends are completely new to RTS games
Start with Age of Empires IV if everyone can use a supported platform, because its modern interface and conventional economy provide a gentle bridge into the genre. If cost is the main concern, try StarCraft II first: its free portions let the group discover whether they enjoy cooperative base building and unit control before purchasing anything.

If you want a real campaign rather than a skirmish
Choose Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for documented co-op campaigns and historical battles. Choose Age of Empires IV if you prefer newer presentation and the Crucible mission format. Do not assume that a game’s team-versus-AI mode is equivalent to a cooperative story campaign.
If everyone plays on different PC platforms
Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition has the clearest evidence of cross-platform multiplayer in the available listings. Confirm the current implementation before buying, because platform policies and account requirements can change. The cited information does not establish cross-platform support for the other recommendations.
If your group dislikes frantic micro-management
Try Northgard first. Its territory, resource and seasonal systems reward planning conversations and preparation. Age of Empires II is another good fit if your friends want a measured pace with deeper classic economy management. Avoid making StarCraft II the first choice for a group that specifically dislikes fast unit control.
If setting matters more than system depth
Choose Halo Wars 2 for a Halo-centered session, or Age of Empires II for historical scenarios. The setting can be the difference between friends learning a game together and abandoning it after one session.

Confirm access before the scheduled time
- Write down each player’s platform, storefront and edition.
- Check whether the game is included in a subscription or requires an individual purchase; the available information does not provide current prices for most titles.
- Install updates and launch the multiplayer menu at least once.
- Verify voice chat or use a separate voice service so coordination does not depend on discovering settings during the match.
Use a two-stage learning plan
Play one low-pressure match to learn the interface, resource names and victory condition. Then restart with a specific team plan. This is more useful than forcing beginners to copy an advanced build order before they know why the order works.
Assign responsibilities without creating a “driver” and a passenger
Good co-op divides decisions rather than giving one player control of everything. Rotate jobs between matches: scouting, economy, defense, technology and the main army. Call out major actions—expanding, attacking, retreating or spending a key resource—so the partner can adjust instead of discovering the change too late.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose difficulty for learning, not pride
Begin below the group’s theoretical skill level. A failed mission caused by an unfamiliar interface teaches less than a successful mission in which both players understand the economy and objective. Increase difficulty after the team can identify its own failure point.
Common co-op problems and practical fixes
“We expected a campaign, but only found skirmishes”
Check the mode name. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition exposes its authored content through the multiplayer lobby’s Co-Op Campaign mode. In other games, online co-op may mean missions, AI skirmishes or competitive team play rather than a complete shared story.
“One experienced player is doing everything”
Set a role boundary for the next match. For example, the newer player owns the first expansion and defensive structures while the experienced player scouts and explains threats. Avoid issuing every command for someone else; explain the decision and let that player execute it.
“The match feels too fast”
Move from StarCraft II to Northgard or Age of Empires II, lower the difficulty, and agree on a slower opening. Faster games become more manageable when the team uses a short list of priorities instead of reacting to every event.
“Friends cannot join the same lobby”
Check platform support, edition ownership, account linking, game version and subscription status in that order. For Age of Empires IV, verify the current cross-platform rules rather than relying on an old guide. For Halo Wars 2, verify the exact console or PC service requirements immediately before purchase.
“We lose after a successful first attack”
Review the economy that supports the army. Co-op teams often spend every resource on the initial push and forget worker production, housing, farms or replacement units. After the next battle, assign one player to watch reinforcement production while the other controls the frontline.
Final recommendation by priority
- Lowest-risk trial: StarCraft II, because Blizzard makes large portions of the game free and provides a dedicated collaborative Co-op mode.
- Best historical co-op: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, through its multiplayer Co-Op Campaign mode.
- Best general-purpose modern pick: Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition, especially for groups that need documented cross-platform multiplayer and two-player co-op missions.
- Best deliberate systems game: Northgard, for territory, resources and seasonal planning.
- Best Halo-oriented console alternative: Halo Wars 2, after checking current platform and subscription requirements.
For a group that has no strong preference, start with Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition if everyone can join the same supported ecosystem. If buying several copies is the barrier, test StarCraft II first. The right choice is the one whose co-op mode, pace and platform rules match how your friends actually want to play.
