Escape Simulator is the closest follow-up to Escape Academy because it keeps the focus on interactive escape rooms. If your favorite part was explaining clues to a separated partner, choose We Were Here, We Were Here Too, or We Were Here Forever. For different kinds of cooperative problem-solving, Portal 2 offers a dedicated two-player physics campaign, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes turns communication into timed bomb-defusal rounds, and It Takes Two broadens the formula into a constantly changing story adventure.
There is no single best choice for every pair. The right game depends on whether you want room exploration, asymmetric clues, spatial physics, rapid verbal instructions, or a larger story with puzzles mixed into other gameplay.

Platform catalogs, cross-play support, and regional editions can change. Check the current store page for both players’ devices before buying, especially when mixing console generations or using a newer platform such as Switch 2.
Choose by the kind of cooperation you want
Choose rooms and objects: Escape Simulator
Escape Simulator recreates the basic rhythm of an escape room: inspect a space, pick up or manipulate objects, connect clues, and open the next path. Pine Studio describes it as a first-person puzzler that works solo or in online co-op, with an editor for creating rooms. That makes it the most direct choice when what you want after Escape Academy is more room-based puzzle solving rather than a different genre.

Choose separated information: We Were Here
The We Were Here games deliberately prevent both players from seeing the same information. One person may have a symbol, map, mechanism, or instruction while the other has the matching context. You must describe what you see accurately, ask useful questions, and decide together what to do. This is a better fit than a shared-room game if the conversation itself is the part you enjoy most.
Choose spatial and physics problems: Portal 2
Portal 2’s cooperative campaign is not an escape-room collection. It is a sequence of test chambers built around portals, movement, timing, and coordinated physical actions. The dedicated campaign gives two players a clear progression and a puzzle language that rewards planning and experimentation.
Choose timed verbal pressure: Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Keep Talking changes the scale of a puzzle session. One player can see the bomb, while the other players use a defusal manual they cannot see on the screen. The challenge is to identify modules and communicate instructions quickly enough to avoid a mistake. It works especially well when you want repeatable rounds rather than one continuous adventure.
Choose a broad two-player adventure: It Takes Two
It Takes Two is built exclusively for two players, but it is not a dedicated puzzle-room game. Each level changes the characters’ abilities and the type of play, combining story scenes with platforming, puzzles, and other activities. Choose it when you want a longer, varied co-op journey and are happy for puzzles to share space with other mechanics.
Escape Simulator: the closest match to Escape Academy
Escape Simulator is the strongest recommendation for a pair that wants to keep opening doors, searching rooms, and combining clues. Its built-in rooms are designed for online co-op, and Pine Studio’s Steam listing recommends up to three players for those rooms. That gives a pair room to divide searching without changing the central escape-room structure.

The game also has an unusually large supply of additional content. The same listing says its community collection exceeds 4,000 rooms and that community rooms have been tested with up to ten players. Treat both figures as a snapshot from the 2026 listing: the collection and its compatibility can change as creators add or update rooms.

What to expect
Do not expect an identical copy of Escape Academy. Escape Simulator is a collection of rooms and community creations rather than one fixed school-themed campaign. Room quality, scale, and intended player count can vary, so check the description of an individual community room before starting it with a larger group.

We Were Here, We Were Here Too, and We Were Here Forever
The three We Were Here recommendations share a core idea: two people are separated and must solve asymmetrical puzzles through communication, teamwork, and observation. They are best played with reliable voice communication. A player who prefers silently examining the same room as a partner may find the format frustrating; a player who enjoys translating partial information will usually find it compelling.
We Were Here
In the first game, the two roles are the Librarian and the Explorer, and each player occupies a different part of an abandoned castle. You guide one another with descriptions over voice communication and a walkie-talkie. Because neither player has the complete picture, success depends on precise language rather than simply finding an item first.
The official page lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, with cross-platform play supported. Confirm the current cross-platform rules for your specific edition before starting, since store and platform policies can change.

We Were Here Too
We Were Here Too is another online first-person cooperative puzzle adventure for two. It keeps the separated-partner structure: players observe different clues, communicate what they see, and work out how the information fits together. It should be viewed as another entry in the same style, not as a completely different kind of game.

We Were Here Forever
We Were Here Forever is described by its developer as the fourth game in the series. It keeps the two-player asymmetrical puzzle format but adds a stronger emphasis on exploration and story around Rockbury and Castle Rock. That makes it the appropriate pick for a pair looking for a longer, more narrative-led version of the same communication challenge.
The official page lists PC, PlayStation, and Xbox and says cross-platform gameplay is supported. The series’ central requirement remains the same: both players need to describe visual information clearly and listen carefully enough to turn two incomplete viewpoints into one solution.
Portal 2: a complete two-player puzzle campaign
Portal 2 is the best alternative when you want puzzles that are systematic, spatial, and physics-driven rather than based mainly on searching a room. Its cooperative mode is a separate campaign with its own story, test chambers, and two new characters. The Steam listing identifies both online co-op and shared/split-screen co-op.

Each chamber asks you to coordinate movement, portal placement, timing, and environmental interactions. One player can often see a possible route while the other controls the action that makes it possible, so discussing a plan before moving is useful. Unlike Escape Simulator, the game is not a catalog of escape rooms; its appeal is the deliberate progression of a designed puzzle campaign.
Pick Portal 2 if
- You want a dedicated two-player campaign rather than a series of independent rooms.
- Your pair enjoys testing a hypothesis, observing the result, and revising the plan.
- You need a choice that can support either online play or local shared/split-screen play on the Steam listing.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: communication in short rounds
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes makes communication the entire interface between players. One person sees the bomb and its modules. The other players use the defusal manual, but cannot see the bomb itself. They must ask for the right details, interpret the answers, and give instructions quickly.
The official page describes local co-op, party, and puzzle play and lists PC, mobile, console, and VR versions. Remote groups can use a voice-chat service, and one copy of the game is enough for the team. The manual can be viewed online or printed for free, so a second purchased copy of the manual is not necessary.
Why it differs from an escape-room campaign
A bomb round is self-contained and replayable. The pressure comes from time, ambiguity, and the cost of giving an incorrect instruction, not from exploring a continuous environment. It is therefore a strong choice for a group that wants several intense sessions in one evening, but a weaker match for someone specifically seeking a story-led sequence of rooms.

- Assign one person as the defuser and give the other player or players the manual.
- Make sure everyone can hear one another clearly before starting.
- Have the defuser describe the visible module, including its labels, colors, symbols, or layout.
- Have the manual reader identify the relevant rule and state one instruction at a time.
- Repeat the description-and-confirmation cycle for each module instead of guessing.
With more than two people, the manual side can divide modules among readers, but the defuser still has to communicate what is visible. That makes the game suitable for a small local party as well as a two-person session.

It Takes Two: the broadest, loosest match
It Takes Two should be recommended honestly: it is a two-player story adventure, not an escape-room substitute. EA describes it as built purely for two players, with couch co-op or online play through Friend’s Pass. Its defining feature is variety: character abilities and gameplay change with each new level.
That variety makes it a good choice when your pair wants a shared journey with puzzles mixed into platforming and other activities. It is less suitable if both players want every minute to involve examining clues, unlocking containers, or solving a self-contained room.
EA’s listed platforms include PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. On October 8, 2026, EA highlighted Switch 2 availability; regional release details and current platform support should be checked for the edition you intend to use.

How to choose in five steps
- Decide whether you want rooms or a campaign. Choose Escape Simulator for a collection of escape rooms, Portal 2 for a dedicated puzzle campaign, or It Takes Two for a broader story adventure.
- Decide whether both players should see the same space. Escape Simulator and Portal 2 generally center on shared environments, while the We Were Here games intentionally split the information between players.
- Decide how much time pressure you want. Keep Talking is built around timed bomb-defusal rounds. The other choices are better when you want to pause, discuss, and experiment at your own pace.
- Check the player count. The We Were Here games and Portal 2’s cooperative campaign are designed for two. It Takes Two is exclusively for two. Escape Simulator’s built-in rooms recommend up to three, while community rooms may support larger groups. Keep Talking supports two or more in local party play.
- Check the exact platform combination. Confirm the current edition, cross-play support, and online or couch mode for both players before purchasing. The official We Were Here pages list cross-platform support; Portal 2’s Steam listing includes online and shared/split-screen modes; It Takes Two supports couch or online play through Friend’s Pass.
Replay value and additional content
Escape Simulator has the clearest long-term expansion path because its editor and community rooms add content beyond the built-in rooms. The more-than-4,000-room figure from Pine Studio’s 2026 Steam listing is not a permanent catalog guarantee, so use it as an indication of scale rather than a promise that every room remains available or equally polished.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes supports procedurally generated bombs and Steam Workshop content, giving repeated sessions a different combination of modules and instructions. That makes it naturally replayable even though each individual round is short.
The We Were Here games provide replay value through the challenge of communication and through the distinct roles each player occupies. Portal 2 offers a fixed cooperative campaign, while It Takes Two is designed around progressing through its changing story and mechanics rather than endlessly repeating one puzzle format.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every recommendation an escape-room game. Only Escape Simulator is a close structural match. Portal 2 is a test-chamber campaign, Keep Talking is a timed party puzzle, and It Takes Two is a wider adventure.
- Assuming cross-play from the title alone. Verify the current platform combination and edition, even where an official page lists cross-platform play.
- Choosing We Were Here without a voice plan. Its puzzles depend on exchanging observations, so text-only coordination may not provide the intended experience.
- Buying a physical manual for Keep Talking. The manual is available to view online or print for free, and remote groups can use a voice-chat service.
- Assuming a community room has the same player limit as a built-in room. Escape Simulator’s room descriptions can differ; check the individual room before inviting a large group.
- Expecting It Takes Two to be a pure puzzle game. Its changing abilities and gameplay are the point, but they also make it a looser follow-up to Escape Academy.

For the most direct continuation after Escape Academy, start with Escape Simulator. If the memorable part was talking through incomplete clues with a partner, start with We Were Here. The remaining games are better selected by the experience you want next: spatial problem-solving in Portal 2, timed verbal precision in Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, or a varied two-player adventure in It Takes Two.
